RIP John McCarthy.

I have a sneaking suspicion it was suicide. From videos I've seen of him he strikes me as a major perfectionist. He looks like the kinda guy who could have unrealistic expectations about himself, his looks and his career.

...that's a fairly big leap to make from some videos you've seen of him.

Malthouse to the Blues, 3 year contract!

http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/147375/default.aspx

Malthouse, 59, said he felt "a great sense of honour to be given the opportunity to coach this great football club".

He said his first meeting with Carlton over the coaching position was last Monday.

The Blues have lost four assistant coaches since Ratten's sacking, but Malthouse said he had no role in those departures.

He said he wanted to coach with a different coaching 'structure' to that of Ratten.

THE AFL is confident a packed stadium will host the first home and away game on foreign soil.

St Kilda and the Sydney Swans will contest the first game played for premiership points to be held outside of Australia next season when they play at Westpac Stadium in Wellington, New Zealand on Anzac Day.

AFL chief operating officer Gillon McLachlan said the 34,000-capacity stadium could be packed out for the historic match, and said the league had hopes that one day a standalone New Zealand team would be a part of the AFL.

"I'm going to put it out there, we'll sell that game out. It will be an incredible event broadcast live back into Australia celebrating shared cultures and values with a great product where sports-mad New Zealanders with Australians who like to travel will be having a great day," McLachlan said.

"Where that goes, I don't know. Whether it's a team in 10 years, I'd love to think it was."

The game will take place immediately following the traditional Collingwood versus Essendon match at the MCG so it can be broadcast live in Australia.

The Saints have been negotiating with the AFL and the Wellington City Council for months to arrange the match.

The initial agreement is that St Kilda will host five games at Westpac Stadium over the next three years, with two to come in 2014 and another two in 2015.

Really cool idea, hope it goes well. I think Fiji should be another target, too, and would love to see one or both of them with teams at some point in the future.

Tough to pick a clear winner this week. You'd think any of the sides are good enough to win their respective game.

I tipped

Fremantle
West Coast

I reckon the Adelaide Freo match will be a cracker. I think Freo are in a great position at the moment, but Adelaide are notoriously tough at home.

very entertaining footy despite the scoreline

Some brilliant footskills by the dockers

Umpires are gifting both sides goals though

Didn't start at the usual quarter to 8ish time, and I almost forgot it was on. See the scoreline, and Fremantle looked to have blitzed the first quarter again. Only 3 goals in it. Adelaide just missing a few opportunities.

edit: Make that two.

FREMANTLE 5.7 8.9 12.11 14.12 (96)
GEELONG 0.1 3.5 6.9 11.14 (80)

ADEL 1.3 4.7
FRE 4.1 7.2

Not bad.

Sydney
Hawthorn

I got 0/2 last weekend so I'm hoping for some slightly improved tips this weekend.

I actually hope that Crows lose. Nothing against the team, it's just the supporters will be unbearable in Adelaide for the next few years.

Swans have missed some very gettable shots, yet still lead comfortably halfway through the second quarter.

Pies look flat.

Steve Johnson was just on Fox Footy. I don't think he has a career in football commentary in his future haha

Good quarter by Adelaide but Hawthorn look really dangerous. Good spread and plenty of scoring opportunities.

I think if hawthorn keep going with the yips and adelaide are efficient in counter-attacks, it will be a crows-swans game next week.

Umpires cheering on hawks already. Interfering free kicks from 100m away. Free kicks to franklin for high contact that was in retaliation.

Selective vision, disgusting unprofessional umpiring.

Lucky it hasnt translated into an advantage yet, but it will do.

edit: yup, theyve got a blind spot for high tackles in adelaides forward line

hard work for crows to beat the hawks when they have their 19th man aka umpires trying to bail them out of the game... we, the 19th men will cheer the crows to victory!!!
