God of War Sequel and Gran Turismo 7 are Cross Generation Titles

Games take time to make. With how long games take to make and the insatiable appetite for new games... it was bound to happen. Some of these studios maybe have 1.5 years developing under PS5/Series X specs, max! Most of the games we're going to see started development on last gen.

I'm confident most of these cross-gen games are going to look really damn good. The Medium, RE8, Demon's, Returnal, HFW... they all look damn good.

Edit: You know you're still buying GOW, HFW, and HALO Infinite! Shit I bet even the next Gears will be cross-gen and I bet it's going to look great.

Imagine trusting a word that comes out of these Sony employees mouths. At least MS were honest about it and took the heat early. Sonys turn to catch some heat.

Also, where is VRR?
But if Sony said they they are going cross gen at first they’d still be lying considering most of their first party ps5 line up out and almost out is ps5 only? Wouldn’t that be more dishonest to ps4 users?

I fully realize I'm posting on a video game forum and am out of touch probably, but I can't think of a single person who WANTS to play these cutting edge games on a PS4 anyway. I've intentionally put off playing cross gen games until I get my PS5 (or just buy them on the Series X). The PS4 is a completely obsolete system, so it seems weird to support it 3 years past the expiration date when the majority of the big new games are exclusive to the PS5 anyway. What were the miles Morales numbers? That was a launch game and as cross gen as it gets, and I bet the PS5 sales smoked it. It's going to get even worse a year in.

I don't like when Microsoft does it either, but gamepass and their PC side of things at least has some logic to it.

But ps5 has Astro bots, returnal, demons souls, and ratchet that are all next gen only and that’s just about half way into year one. I think this argument is kind of moot. PlayStation obviously invested a ton into making games that take full advantage of the ps5 hardware. If gran turismo has been in development for years and the ps5 version looks good enough who cares. The argument against Phil’s take is that his carries too much weight. The only next gen only exclusive title on the Xbox is the medium, a timed third party exclusive. That’s a bit of an issue.

We also already knew horizon and god of war would be cross gen, gt7 is only a bit of a surprise because every one here knows damn well that trailer looked next gen as fuck.
Flight Sim is next Gen only.... that's all I got lol

This is disappointing to hear.

Would like to hear how they intend to go about doing this.. And understand how much it would hold the PS5 version back.

Is it going to something similar to XSS and XSX. Where they strip out all the next gen and complicated bits and reduce resolution down to something that works? Or has been built from ground up on PS4? Cant imagine it's the latter.

Either way don't see how PS5 owners can get the best possible experience out of this, but need to hear more.

The games will kick ass regardless tho tbf.

Where's the "Xbox Series S is going to hamstring the generation" crowd at now? If you thought Xbox Series S is weak, imagine having your games be cross-gen with an OG PS4 :messenger_tears_of_joy:
You're 100% right in that Series S won't hold it back until year 3 or so. :messenger_sunglasses:

Also, it's weird and kind of ironic that someone would be laughing at games having to run on OG PS4, in the context of a MS was right post.

Damn, and that's following the rumors Ragnarok was PS5-only and GT7 also being PS5-only (tho there was that Spanish listing last year for GT7 mentioning PS4).

TBH this isn't a big deal; I think in light of stuff like Horizon: Forbidden West, it should be more than clear last-gen (at this stage of current-gen so far) isn't the limiting factor of what games can do in terms of fidelity, that's down to the developer, their talent and available resources. Sony's teams seem more capable than most in this respect, so it's not really an issue for me.

Plus going by Miles Morales cross-gen isn't stopping the lionshare of sales being on the current-gen systems. While it does mean in terms of certain game design mechanics, FW and GT7 might not be "next-gen", that's really just an assumption and to be perfectly honest there's not much in game mechanics themselves the new systems can do the previous ones can't outside of maybe some SSD features (not every game's gonna need that tho) and seamless cloud integration. Other things like physics and AI logic can be scaled generally well, even if some effort is required.

If I were told Forbidden West was using PS5 as the lead platform, I'd believe it. The only thing WRT this cross-gen stuff I'm still miffed on is the gaming media never issuing apologies for trying to slaughter Microsoft for openly stating commitment for cross-gen back in early-mid 2020; a lot of sensationalism was drummed up in those articles that was never needed (though the somewhat lukewarm presentation of Halo Infinite didn't do much to quell those concerns).

EDIT: Also this might be a reach but I think so many of Sony's 1P for this and next year being cross-gen could help explain why they've been so consistent with 1P releases since launch. Not excusing Microsoft for their lack of consistency in 1P releases for their new systems, but it might be a factor there.
To me, this story is less about the disappointing revelation that GOW is not only cross-gen, but delayed, and more about Sony's credibility. They knew both these things to be true, and gave more than just implications that they weren't.

It's really a triple-whammy, in my mind. But the worst part is Sony has lost a ton of credibility with me. I think it's fair to say their attitude towards consumers is disrespectful.

People saying "We believe in generations" can't read, can they?

"We have always said that we believe in generations. We believe that when you go to all the trouble of creating a next-gen console, that it should include features and benefits that the previous generation does not include. And that, in our view, people should make games that can make the most of those features.

"We do believe in generations, and whether it's the DualSense controller, whether it's the 3D audio, whether it's the multiple ways that the SSD can be used... we are thinking that it is time to give the PlayStation community something new, something different, that can really only be enjoyed on PS5."

It's about features.

I would have been happy for them to have just leave the PS4 behind the day that the PS5 launched but the reason these games and Miles Morales release on both consoles is simply because it's as close to free money as they can get. I suppose with the PS4 being the second best selling home console so far, fourth best selling if you include handhelds too, it's just a natural side effect of being so bloody succesful on a global scale every time you release a home console.
Let's be honest, it's pretty safe to assume even today with how popular they are on a global scale this generation that PS6 games will be in much the same position with PS5 versions of those games also releasing for a year or two.
It is what it is, I tend not to get emotional about games and stuff.

Isn't this technology issue? If you design game around fast data streaming(ssd, new I/O) streaming the level/assets in on a fly is not something ps4/x1 can manage. Previous gen's were design around hdd, everything stored in ram and long loading screens to fill ram

I made the right decision cancelling my ps5 pre order. I’ll wait for ps5 slim/pro and maybe by then we will have ps5 games.
I mean, even without a PS5 it's not like I'm looking forward to play next GoW and Horizon on PS4 at all.

makes no sense constraining them this way and no doubt the GoW delay is to ensure the downgrade, but then... chip shortages, scalpers, pandemics, pansex... may well be the end of western civilization...

I'd like to see that quote saying "all future games will be ps5 only" but I don't think it exists.
We believe in generations. But go ahead try to spin it.
Also what's with these cross-gen announcements hidden in blog posts? Cmon Sony, you're better than this.
They aren’t. Remember that Spiderman is a DLC mess up? Cross-play before that and many other examples. Communication and messaging is all over the place. It is the worst that I have seen for a company of this size.

Sounds like excuses to me

Just remember, Sony will tell you whatever it takes to sell you a console.
Na they don't need to say anything because they released Astrobot, Demon's Souls, Returnal and in a few days Ratchet and Clank. I don't need Phil whispering in my ears about waiting and things to come.

The funny thing is only Halo and Forza Horizon 5 look to be cross gen for Xbox.

Avowed, Everwild, Forza Motorsport 8, Perfect Dark, Fable, Hellblade 2 are all next gen only and even Starfield if rumoured to be next gen only.
How far are those games out tho??

Not even surprised, he refused to commit to either way on whether it was going to be PS5 only or not. I knew then that this was going to happen. That's the way Jim works. He knew back when he did that interview that this was the case for God of War.

But...they did. They said a lot. And it wasn't true.

Yep yep.

Not happy about it.

Makes no sense. No one is buying Miles Morales on PS4 because they are all waiting to get it on PS5. You think there will be a lot of users in frikkin mid-late 2022 who buy Ragnarok for PS4? And they are preventing showing an absolute masterclass in visuals and showcase for PS5 that would bring new PS4 and other platform players over to PS5. And by then there shouldn't be supply issues. All this for maybe like a million sales on PS4.

Very stupid but Horizon impressed me enough where I still think this will look good. Just not quite as good as it could have been.

I wonder how deep during development they were forced to switch to cross-gen because of the shortages. GT7 will probably be fine since GTS ran and looked great even on base PS4's, but God of War might be affected if they were planning to make it a benchmark for the PS5.

" Haven, Firewalk, but also teams we’ve worked with over years, like Kojima Productions, From Software.

To me, in many ways, there really is no difference. They’re all PlayStation Studios"

Somebody tell this man that unless you own the studio, those arent playstation studios. Until their paychecks say "Sony" at the top left, they are independent developers.
