UFC 207 Rondo Rousey vs Amanda Nunes |OT| No Love & NO MORE QUESTIONS

The ruleset is biased towards strikers. Five minute rounds is not enough for a grappling intensive strategy and stand ups are a thing. Gloves also make it difficult to lock on submissions. The dominant metagame in MMA that will optimize your chances of winning is to engage in a standup battle unless you have a significant advantage in the grappling department (Demian Maia).
You mean the ruleset that bans strikes to the back of the head and neck? Soccer kicks, stomps, and knees to the head of a downed fighter? By making the sport safer you automatically slant it towards grappling since you can do more grappling techniques without killing or maiming your opponent. Even when it's not removing striking tools from the toolbox there are rules like not being allowed to grab the cage that are in favor of grapplers. I think it all balances out and in the end if you match people up skill for skill, striking emerges because skill stalemates don't mitigate the opportunity to output damage.

I think my stance with the Holm fight was Ronda would win if she got it on the ground but no chance if kept standing. For what I can only imagine was some absurd ego driven reason it was kept standing until Ronda went into panic mode and failed to take Holly down. After all the talk maybe it should've been expected that they'd actually be dumb enough to try to box a multi-time world champion striker.

Her womanhood and heart is being tested now. Shit was funny at first but now I really want to see her find a competent trainer (maybe Mayweather ha! Justjokes) but seriously she needs to find her heart and come back strong. Maybe even 6 months from now. She doesn't need to wait. She needs to find a trainer asap and get back at it.

Ronda is going to turn 30 next month and it'd probably take just as long to undo the damage of Ed's training has done over the years and "fix" it if it even can be and I highly doubt she'd ever move away from being surrounded by yes men like Edmond and all the hanger-ons at this point, especially after not doing so after her own mother came out trashing Edmond before the execution by Holm that proved her right yet Ronda stayed loyal to him which is insane, Ronda is done.

Soccer kicks yes, but knees to a downed fighter strongly favours grapplers actually. It makes takedowns much more worthwhile. It also turns side control and the North-South position into much more dangerous positions. Georges St. Pierre actually fought in a promotion called the UCC before he was in the UFC that allowed knees to a grounded opponent. He was an absolute monster in that ruleset. The guys who were most known for knees to the head in Pride were actually wrestlers. Mark Coleman won the 2000 Grand Prix with them. Kevin Randleman made a career out of them as well.

Punches to the back of the head goes both ways. It makes singles and double legs more dangerous if you do them incorrectly but it also makes the back mount immensely more dangerous. The old Gracie strategy back in the Vale Tudo days was to take the back and then just elbow the shit out of the back of the skull until their opponents got knocked out or exposed their necks for a choke.

As good as strikers' TDD has gotten these days any strikes to the head of a downed opponent are more likely to favor them, since successful TD% is dropping every year. Comparing what worked for Royce, Severn, or Coleman to what works now is apples and oranges. A grappler is more likely to fail a takedown attempt than they are to land one in the modern UFC. They are the ones that benefit the most from that range of strikes being banned.

That's not the same thing. That's just being polite about her opponent and admitting her opponents strengths. In fact I think that's a very nice humble Rhonda.
She literally explained exactly what happened in the fight yet still couldn't stop her. It's the same damn thing.

I'm still slightly bemused that the next UFC PPV is headlined by Holly Holm. While it is for a new champion of a new woman's division to be crowned it's still puzzling given that she was last seen on a FOX card loosing IIRC.

PM Bish for deets.

It's Dana's way of sticking it to Cyborg. basically creating a new division that a month ago Dana said wasn't possible and purposely handing Holm a scrub to make her not only the only champ for that division, but the UFC's first woman's champ to have won titles in 2 weight classes.

It does seem like he's sticking it to Cyborg.

Germaine's no scrub though. Her and Holly should be an interesting standup fight.

I heard Cyborg failed a piss test and will be suspended.

Its over. The problem is she damaged her entire Aura, and has lost millions in movie deals etc........ I don't know what she does next.

She should have joined a big MMA team and not stay with a slimy and delusional boxing coach. The damage done to her image are irreparable. The magic was her being on a hot run and smashing everybody in her way. It worked obviously until she faced women that can really punch.

Its a completely standard american hyperbolic success story of being put on that pedestal of greatness and one day Conor will get his. It will be icecold...

The moment McGregor faces Khabib. Dana is trying with everything in his power to avoid making that matchup. Khabib will make an example of McGregor if that bout actually is ever booked.

Conor would KO Khabib in the first round.

There is no way that you seriously believe that... If you've ever seen him fight you know he'll destroy McGregor. Khabib has destroyed everyone in his path. 24-0 in his career 8-0 in the UFC. Nobody wants to fight him including McGregor.

Conor made the adjustment with Diaz. He's smart enough to know when he has to reevaluate what he does if what he's doing isn't effective. Ronda got wrecked by Holm and doubled-down on her stand-up. She just doesn't have the awareness Conor does. Even after Conor lost to Diaz he didn't flee the ring and avoid the press like Diaz did. The two are just wired so differently.

Did you see Khabib get wrecked by Michael Johnson when they were standing? Khabib looked like a fish out of water.

If McGregor connects like that.. its over.

Lol. People said the same thing about Aldo. Conor doubters crack me up.

Wrecked?? Michael Johnson did nothing to Khabib except absorb the abuse Khabib gave him for 3 rounds. He toyed with him the entire fight to make an example of him. Look what he did to Dos Anjos as well. 2 very dominating performances which is exactly how it would play out if Conor faced him.

Cyborg was flagged for failing her latest USADA test, right after this announcement was made. so that may have something to do with Cyborg not getting the shot

Johnson was miles better than Khabib standing up. Better takedown defense wins him the fight. Conor creates space much better than MJ and is very hard to get down. This would be a very tough matchup for both guys but Conor has much more to lose.

Even before the test Dana made it blatantly clear that there would not be a featherweight womans division because "There just isn't enough woman fighters to create a new division" It's just funny how it's all playing out. Once the hearing from the drug test happens a lot will come to light as to why she got popped for a diuretic.

Khabib got popped with a right hand really good by Johnson. Standup is his weakness. A fight with Conor is a classic grappler vs striker matchup. Anything can happen.

Because it's what sells fights. He hasn't defended his title period and has repeatedly ducked fighters.

You said he was coddled, implying Dana is pulling strings so he doesn't lose. Rematching a dude who humiliated him makes no sense by that logic, people did not expect him to win.

He was dominating the first Diaz fight until he got caught. There was no harm taking that rematch. He begged for it and with Conor making the UFC the money they made for him fighting someone who barely cracks the top 5 let alone top 10 at welterweight they werent going to turn him down. Its like how Dana bent over backwards for GSP and Jon Jones not too long ago. Difference is those two fighters cleaned out their divisions

Got caught? Lmao. Even Conor would say that's wrong.

Even with less than 2 weeks notice, I disagree. Diaz didn't have a camp, so he was finding his rhythm there. Conor probably had the first round, but he wasn't "dominating". And by the second round Conor was gassed and Nate was in his head. Just because Diaz bleeds 24/7 doesn't mean he was being dominated.

The second fight, however, Conor ran the show.

He got fast tracked to a titleshot and avoided most of the top fighters in each division to get it.

Holloway, Poirier, Mendes and Aldo is a world class run at featherweight. Jumping straight against RDA was a insanely brave thing to do and when that fell through going for the champ-champ title against Alvarez was still impressive

Conor was not dominating Nate in their first fight. He was throwing heat in every single strike but missing most of it. He was spending so much energy darting in, missing and then getting hit on the way out. Even on the second fight, there were multiple sketchy moments when his gas tank failed and Nate was able to push up the pace.

Khabib looked BAD on the feet. He has always looked bad on the feet. Khabib is my favorite fighter right now, but ever since he came to the UFC its been clear his approach to getting withing wrestling range has been to trust his chin. Even against Trujillo or Healey. His posture/stance has never looked comfortable for striking, he has no head movement and he has no defensive layers.

Conor on the other hand is all about layers of defense. You saw him against Eddie, the reason he was able to counter wrestle so effectively wasn't because McGregor has world class TDD. It was all about control of space. Conor would use footwork and striking to avoid wrestling. He was able to make Eddie engage him on his terms.

He got outclassed completely. And then came back and won. So coddled.
Point is Dana never wanted this fight to happen. But Conor was "coddled" by being able to call the shots for all his fights with 4 UFC bouts on his resume to get a title shot. So yeah he was coddled by not facing the top grapplers to avoid exposing an obvious weakness. And by also having him bypass most in the top 5 for a title shot

All very solid points. Mendes exposed a big flaw in McGregors takedown defense as well. Its a shame he took the fight on short notice and wasn't in fight shape to take full advantage.

Biggest advantage due to the rules for strikers is the gloves. Without them (and the taping underneath them) a striker can't do more then a couple hard shots per match before their hands would break. If you were mostly limited to slaps, elbows and kicks the stand up would be quite different. There really is nothing in the rules to balance the game back enough from the glove advantage. They don't even try. For example just having a long sleeved rash guard and leggings would bring the grappling back quite a bit due to increased friction. Now the fighters just get sweaty after the first round and you have the gloves in the way to make it even worse.

edit: As the strikes get better and better I expect the amount of wrestlers/grapplers to go down over the years. Personally I'm hoping that nogi BJJ with Eddie Bravo Invitational rules gets bigger as it is a lot of fun to watch.

Thats how the UFC wants it. Makes fights more exciting for the casual fan. Imagine if they allowed grapplers to still wear a Gi.. No striker would ever be champ in any of the divisions. But for the casual fan it makes for boring viewing

But at what point does it turn into muay thai? It is basically MMA without the ground work (think kickboxing with longer clinch with more stuff allowed like throws and trips)

Edit: Also from my casual friends point of view I watched UFC 207 with the highlight of the whole night was this

Grappling can be exciting too.

I totally agree. It's a fine line to tread to keep things exciting for the casual fanbase. Us diehards really don't like it but most of us will watch it anyways. I think that's what makes the other organizations out there so appealing to watch at times as well.

UFC is fucked up in general for better or for worse. Like, who the fuck is Cody Garbrandt? Five UFC fights against journeymen and he gets a title shot?

I mean, the match-ups are good. Women's went Ronda, Holm, Tate, Nunes like bam-bam-bam. Conor getting thrown into all sorts of random shit. Part of what makes the UFC exciting is that there is clearly no structure or logic in how fights get made, and yet, we're not seeing any stagnation in the divisions. The Middleweight division with the belt flipping around like crazy, too.

I really do hope they sort out the rankings and get a better system so titles feel more "earned," and champions seem more "deserving," but while Conor is very loud about his matchmaking, I don't think how he gets shots is out of wack with how the UFC operates.

They threw CM Punk to a young and dangerous, they gave Brock a title shot after a small sampling of win/lose fights, UFC don't care.

The only thing the UFC doesn't like is people who get injured.

Especially now that the just got bought for 4 billion dollars. You can be sure a huge chunk of that money came from a loan and that shit has to be paid.

I mean fucking Disney paid 4 billion for Lucasfilm. No way in hell UFC is as good as an investment.

Also only super star UFC has left is Conor. So now Conor can ask for pretty much whatever he wants.

Sure, but is what they're doing the best thing for their organization? They just sold their entire brand for the price of two basketball teams. It's still a young league. I'd argue that going with USADA has hurt their earnings short-term, but they needed to do it for the long-term health of the org. They need to fix the match-making somehow, because it's very confusing for everyone.

Nothing will ever beat that Disney deal, Lucas said himself he priced it because he thought Disney would be the best possible "steward" for the IP. He just wanted to give it to someone who wouldn't bungle it.
