Honest question, because I don't know: Is an Estimated Retail Price tag an indication for potential price changes because it's that uncommon in the US?

In Germany we've got the same called UVP - and Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft and other publishers put that behind their prices pretty often.
Just checked the German XBox shop and saw that Xbox One X bundles also got that tag right now.

In Germany this tag is a chance that retailers will offer a special price for the launch of a product, for example offering a new 69,99€ UVP game for 64,99€.
But as far as I know that tag never was an indicator for retailers/companies cutting down their prizes last minute.

I guess, it's possible to change price right up to before the pre-orders starts. I just don't see it happening though. I was also a bit curious, that MS wanted to pushish retailers that broke the street date. We know the prices, but not a single retailer has put the prices up anywhere yet.

Yes because Microsoft went first and were not going to be under cut by Sony again after last generation. They put ERP out there for flexibility depending on what Sony does. People love to call Phil a liar but he said they would not be out of position or power after 2013. You don't say that unless you have the green light of the CEO.

You know i am right.
No your not, besides the hardcore gamer that buys both consoles most other people will buy the system they already are invested in . No ones switching just to save $50 , thats just stupid.
Sony have sold twice as many consoles than MS this gen for a reason, they appeal to a broader range of people.
You are extremely delusional if you think shaving $50 from a XsX is going to make much of a impact.
Saying that I don’t believe this BS rumor for a second.

But Sony didn't undercut them?
PS5/XSX = Same price
PS5DE/XSS = MS has the lower price

I see no reason why they'd have to lower their prices.
The stronger console for the same price, the digital edition for 100$ less.

Out of position?
What position? A distant last place?

With millions of preorders already made and consoles already paid? Good luck with that and the pissed off retailers.
No there are no millions or pre orders. Sony isn't launching with that many systems. The number is far less. However sony wouldn't match price when people have already put money down. They have no need.

No but shaving 50 off the S makes it less than the ps4 and becomes an alternative to those late generation shopper's. You get a new generation system for less money and can still play 250 previous generation games on gamepass huge value to that demographic.

Nobody cares about Xbox worldwide.

Even if the Xbox was cheaper, people would still want the PS5, because that's where the games they love are.
A lot of the games they love (almost every single one, in fact) are on both consoles (and on pc).

For many gamers price is a factor. Unless they're already heavily invested in the ecosystem.

But yes, the general momentum today is that nobody cares about xbox outside of the US.

Its ridiculous that anyone would think that a price reduction would be "desperate" in any way, especially if this was the price they planned from day one and just lured Sony into a higher price.

What's ridiculous is thinking that mega billion companies are like just some dude behind a computer waiting to troll another dude for a price war. Like there is no logistics to setting price and release dates, or that they don't have to answer to shareholders and how price adjustments can affect their stocks for a certain amount of time.

Tht rumor is true.
Microsoft wants to win this gen.

They will give the console for dirt cheap since they want you to buy gamepass.

Sony doesnt even try anymore.

Thy think thy can do what ever and make people wait in line and stay up all night to preorder ps5.

Well not this time around. Thy think they are safe but with xss at 250 hell even 200 and xsx at 400 yes you watch 400 thy dont stand a chance

Tht was typo. Of course xbox is better than playstation. Tht is a fact

Then why does everybody buys Sony consoles instead ? Something doesn't match.

The flagship of your console is Craig. It looks like a PS3 game and it's been delayed. It has a grand total of zero launch exclusive.

How are they supposed to sell consoles with that situation?

Yes I won't be surprised if that happens. I was very surprised to see the XSS at $299. It's a $249 machine max (particularly with PS5 being at $399). If they don't do it now, they'll do it eventually during 2021.

But I don't think they are going to do it now because I expect they'll sell everything during the launch period.

Gamepass baby. All you need is gamepass and all third party titles watchdogs etc at highest setting.

No, they're not. Sony 1st party has a lot of the best games (god of war was game of the year, Naughty Dog games...) and can't be played on other consoles or even PC (at least for years, right now only HZD had a port and it was years later)

Personally I think the series s needs to be 150 less than the DE to make sense and have a chance to be a big seller. Plus getting it well under the msrp of the ps4 would be big.

Called a 50 quid reduction on the S the moment Sony revealed their prices. I believe there may be some truth in these rumours. They didn't put ERP on those released prices for nothing you know!

And contrary to some of the comments in here, it would not be a sign of weakness or being scared. It's an aggressive push to get more market share, because once people have their hardware, it's all profit for them on the games.

Again, how could anybody (apart from scared Sony fans) spin this as a bad thing? The consumer would be the winner.

Gamepass isn’t free and casuals more or likely don’t care or even know about it , doubt that even goes into consideration .
Whats stopping SONY from cutting $50 for the PS4 ? Exactly nothing.

Hellblade 2 blows all of them out of the water.

I know, but out the hundreds of games, exclusives are a tiny fraction. And many gamers just don't care, as long as they can play the usual Madden, Assassin's Creed, CoD and such.

That's why I wrote "almost" and talked about being already invested. Calm down, no one is bashing your precious little box (ehm, humongous box).

Do you have to put an ERP tag on your prices in the US in order to be allowed to lower them before the official preorder start?

While I loved the first part and can't wait for the sequel, you know it was basically God of War with less gameplay (at least much more linear) and we haven't seen any gameplay for part 2 to say it'll go another direction.

EDIT: Sorry, double post.
