RTX 4080 review thread

This could have been such a great product. The low temps, low noise, low power consumption, and performance are impressive. But the price totally kills the product. And who is going to buy an AIB 4080 for the same price as a FE 4090? Sigh. I hope the 7900 series cards can beat this in rasterized performance.

Time to retire the old 1080ti…

Don't be fooled by these out-of-stock announcements, though. We have no idea how many GPUs there were in the store.

This graphics card is in a very odd place in Europe. Who the hell has 1700€ to spend on a GPU without going all the way to 2000€ for the 4090?

Well, can't speak for every countries in Europe but where I'm at, the 4090 is minimum 2300€ and generally goes for 2500-2800€.
To make things even better, the 3080's and 3090's aren't dropping in price by much, still cost between 1000 and 1400 for them.

It's ridiculous, no choice but wait and see what happen in the next 6 months. I never owned an AMD card before but it might be time to finally jump ship.

Pretty much what I expected, which is why I went with a 4090 and have no regrets. The extra performance is worth the extra cost.
I bought it because it was the first one out. But I agree, when things are already stupidly expensive I’m not holding back at the highend segment, if I would try to save money I would go way lower and build the whole PC that way.

The 7900xtx will be the way better card and value. The 4080 will have a tiny RT advantage maybe

I don't know about tiny but the xtx should have good enough RT performance for most people.

AMD claims ~1.5x over the 6950XT so in theory xtx shouldn't have a problem with the 4080 and it will be ~$200 cheaper.

Same where i am and ever worse. 1500euros for rtx 3080 but i usually order from Germany and Amd GPUs are not that overpriced. You can get a 6800 for 550-560. I wasnt planning to upgrade from my 5600xt but a 400euros 6700xt it is tempting

WHAT A FUCKING JOKE !!!!!!!!!!!!!

4080fe here in Poland is 1550usd=7000pln(suggested lowest msrp but not possible since nvidia does not sell their fe lol) compared to 730usd=3300pln nvidia asked for 3080fe. That is more than double the fucking price !!!
Granted, I was the only Polish person who managed to grab 3080fe for it's msrp price. The nvidia PL store stock lasted for 1 minute and it was the first and last time nvidia fucking sold FE cards here..... what a joke.

... So that's double the price for 30-50% fps increase... we get 0.5:1 performance ratio lol.
Seriously. This is 50% worse deal than 3080 was.

Insane, but I feel they're successfully re-writing the rules when it comes to GPU pricing.
We are now cheering for AMD 999.99€ card. Give it another round and we'll be cheering at whoever price their cards at "only" 1200€. Also, 999.9€ msrp will put it at 1200€-1300€ here in EU.

Where's that gonna put the mid range cards this gen? 700-800€ msrp for a 4060 (ti) level card. Brilliant!

yep. That's how they get us... and I feel everyone is doing that recently. Everything is so damn expensive.
Same with TVs.
48" lg c1 was 5500pln last year, lg c2 48" is 7000pln this year. Both launch prices... WTF

The sad part is that nvidia knows people are going to buy this anyway.
Most people don’t want amd to humble nvidia so that they can buy amd’s new great product, they want amd to force nvidia to lower their prices so that they can continue to buy nvidia products.

Just a reminder to everyone that this is 100% intentional to move all the 30xx stock.
The prices are ridiculous though. AMD with their 4080 competitor at $1K isn't much better either.
There are a lot of people that can buy these cards that just won't do it on principle. Like no, the High > Very high setting transition is not worth nearly doubling the price of the GPU. Most of the time the difference is negligeable. Competitive games that you need high FPS for are usually not very GPU intensive.
Maybe there is a market for 4K high FPS gaming, and that's what these cards are for, also raytracing (which I'm convinced is mostly a gimmick for now, until games go raytracing exclusive).
The sad thing is that if demand is high enough this will give AMD and Nvidia to keep these prices long term and increase the cost of the entire budget/value lines as well.

when you start an RPG, do you also use cheat codes to max out all your stats "because you can"?
I do sometimes for cash or something easy. I'm a parent who has less time these days. Tactics Ogre is the last game that came to mind. Cash and maybe a 5 xp boost until I found out about the cap. The Deck helps a lot.

Going by AMDs recently shared numbers, 4080 should easily beat the 7900 XTX in demanding RT games like Dying Light 2 and CyberPunk 2077.

The weak RT performance is probably the reason AMD priced those cards the way they did.

Even the 4070/4070 Ti might be better at RT than the 7900 XT/XTX.

Anyone wondering if these cards will sell out?

People were almost as upset with the 4090 pricing before release, then went out in droves to buy them up.

I just can't imagine seeing these things in stock (not sold out) online tomorrow.

Let’s wait and see.I think even if the 4080 would be better in RT the RT of the 7900s should be more than enough for great RT experiences and performances

I'm one of the shrinking crowd of people who are still able to afford PC gaming. But all Nvidia gets from me is a big fat "f*uck you" and not a penny. 1. the pricing strategy is based on cheapest upselling marketing (trainee level). 2. nvidia is trying to push the players for RTX towards their poor streaming offer. 3. I already had the f*ck you? I'm looking forward to my RX 7900 XTX. This pricing reflects the ray tracing in Jensen's ass.

Great great value?

The matter of fact is that, AMD is trying to sell you a 6800XT sequel at $999 range. They bumped the price but changed the name. It's not even a tight competition like RDNA 2 vs Ampere last gen with the $999 6900XT vs $1,499 3090, where they were trading tight blows with the 3090 pulling ahead at 4k. Now it looks like the 4090 is simply untouchable in performances.

Not so sure about about 7900XTX eating the 4080 for breakfast. Its matching and even exceeding AMD's own Red dead redemption 2 numbers. It will trade blows in rasterization depending on titles (of course some favoring Nvidia, some favoring AMD, we all know the games by now), with mostly the 7900XTX pulling ahead. (let's not even go in RT though..) Again, it looks like a déjà vu with 3080 vs 6800XT. Let's wait December 3rd i guess, there's a reason why AMD is wanting a match against the 4080 and not the 4090. 7900XT was basically going against the now gone 4080 12GB. They somehow managed to find a better name to not get the fury of tech youtubers.

And mid range is gonna be crap this gen, big time. Not impressed so far except for the absurd 4090 monster.
1- I think it’s safe to start forgetting about low price video cards or consoles from now on. You can thank Taiwan and inflation around the world where Sony increased the price for a console 2 years in.
2- Aside from ray tracing, if Amd charts are not BS, the 6900xtx is close to the 4090 for 600$ cheaper. From the look of it, it’s way more closer to the 4090 that it’s to 4080

Demanding RT games need all the performance they can get. If they end up 20-30% behind the RTX 4080 it's not a good look. More demanding RT games are coming out every year.

When I upgrade my GPU it will be based on RT performance since my current card can run everything I want in raster well enough already...

I gotta admit I made a mistake from some months ago when I said I don't think the 4080 (pre reveal when the buzz was still on the $699 RTX 3080) would be more than $999.
I was dead wrong and this weaksauce $1200 is indeed shamefully called a 4080.

We all know why they are doing it and it is everything but offering a good product in itself. It is a distraction to make the old 30 stock and 4090 look better.
Absolutely no interest from me in that card. In europe it is 1469€ lol. I can buy like 1469 Baguettes for that and still have some money left for coke.

Shameful stuff from Nvidia. According to techpowerup, 4080 is only 42% better in performance than the 3080 while the 3080 was on average 63% better than the 2080.

For $500 more than the 3080 and 2080 launched at. Absolutely disgusting. It's priced like a 2080Ti and a 3080 Ti. The only problem is that the 3080Ti was 83% more powerful than the 2080. So double the performance upgrade Nvidia is offering with the 4080.

4080 is basically a 4070 Ti that should be being sold for $600 max. Hope it flops. Shameful.

People would probably be happier with the same price as a 3080 at launch. Even 799 would have been more acceptable price wise but the 1199 is high.
With inflation, TSMC 4N increased production costs and 60% increase in RAM, plus loads of 30-series stock remaining; anyone expecting the launch 3080 price was out of their mind.

$1200 is still too much though...

I'll be stunned if they don't slash the price of this thing going into the new year provided AMD's new cards perform in line with what they've told us to expect.

It's going to be forever before they get down to the 4060 and 4060ti tier, isn't it. And those will probably also come with a 50%-70% markup, because fuck you give us money.

Tiny market for products like that in a recession. AMD will also take their time in releasing their lower end cards, there's no rush.

I like the fact that it has the same cooler as the 4090: it means that it runs very cool and very quiet. However, nvidia could absolutely charge less if they wanted to. They’ve gotten too greedy, as seen by the 12gb “3080”.

According to the theory that says anyone with $1k will just spend 60% more for a 4090, these 4080's should sit on shelves. Somehow I don't think it's gong to work out that way.

I might actually go AMD this time. Never seriously considered it but these prices are absolutely disgusting. And at a tough time economically for people ... it's infuriating actually.

Well...bye bye PC gaming quite possibly for ever

This 4080 is expensive but it is going to beat modern games to a pulp. Kinda overkill. Right now, you can get pretty good stuff for $200-$500. If pc gaming means having a "flagship" gpu then yeah it might be too expensive. There's no rule that says a pc has to wipe the floor with consoles.

Most recent relevant releases don't have RT and are gorgeous.

Besides Metro Exodus all RT implementations are bad. Reflections on puddles, metals and windows that your eye can't catch on movement.

Fuck fade RT give me raster that's what matters.

Sane Nvidia game plan: Some time after Radeon 7000 series release, drop 4080 price, release 4080 Ti based on AD102.
Insane: Wait for Ampere to sell out and do nothing.

Which timeline do you think we're in, GAF?
