Jim Ryan: All future cross-gen titles, including God of War and GT7, will be $10 upgrades from PS4 to PS5

If this was "built from the ground up for PS5", that would surely mean the PS4 version - coming later - required extra work, and thus should be the more expensive one.

I wonder how many concerned people actually have PS5s and are actually planning on getting Forbidden West day before the sale you know is coming.

Hell, beyond a couple graphical upgrades if that 10 bucks irks you so just play the PS4 enhanced version on PS5......the PS4 version is going to be enhanced right?
Right?

P.S Ive already come to terms with the current gen games costing me 70 bucks if I day one them.
There is no SP game coming soon that im going to day one so as long as I can stomach a month or 2 of FOMO its all good.
Okay cept maybe SIFU....and Elden Ring....and Dying Light 2.

P.P.S Might actually just wait for the PC version anyway.

Why doesn't the PS5 version that costs $10 more come with the PS4 version? That's stupid.
Because why would you play the PS4 version on a PS5? The most logical thing to do is the usual £10 to upgrade from your PS4 copy to PS5 but everyone was moaning about that so 😏.

Can I make a suggestion to those unhappy with the upgrade path?

Buy the PS4 version (better yet, buy it used after a week or whatever). Beat the game. Sell the PS4 version for almost what you paid for it.
Then, when you actually get a PS5 and want to replay the game, buy it again when it's cheaper.

I really don't understand why people don't just do this. There is no PS4 digital. You're just paying to have a thing sat in a library losing value by the day. Am I missing something?

I wasn’t aware there was a PS5 version. It was only supposed to be a patch.
The timing of this non-news is amazing. This isn't about Horizon Zero Dawn the game already out and getting a free PS5 patch. This is about the unreleased Horizon Forbidden West which will release with a PS4 and PS5 version separately. Essentially buy the PS5 version like every other PS5 game released so far.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
Gotta value those UK Sales charts with a max of 8k copies sold.

That will tell shitty nintendo and MS.

Im looking forward to HFW it looks incredible but yeah Sony again not being clear at any point about their message or practices or downright lying.

Oh yeah, I forgot about how stupid Nintendo fans are for buying remasters of old games.

It's just like buying a patch for a game that's not that old.

Oh wait.

If you prefer digital and only have a PS4 your only option is $80.

And it's just a hassle to have to buy a disc, play it, sell it, re-buy on a sale, etc, when you could just... buy it... and then play it as a PS5 edition for free (lol) or for just a $10 extra fee. Not an option. Need to buy the PS5 disc standalone. It's just inconvenient

Horizon: Forbidden west is coming out a year and a half after the ps5 launch. Why would there be a free upgrade?

If I buy NBA 2K22 for PS4, they are not giving me the PS5 version for free. I have to buy the game again, or get the Deluxe Edition

The same happened for NBA 2K21 last year...

You buy the game for one platform. Choose one and stick to it or buy the deluxe edition

No, this isn't just a "next-gen tax" like we've seen in GoT.
If you have a PS4, and want to get both versions to play in the PS5 in the future, you need to get the Digital Deluxe Edition. That's $80. And there's no upgrade path from the standard versions.

Sony will continue to do this because their fans will defend anything they do. After they tried to paint the terrible GOT upgrade path as a positive I realized with a company who has as many loyal fans as sony, its a losing battle to even try to jump into the short term by pointing out bad business practices. They think because they make good games it gives them a pass to have shitty practices.

Every brand has people like this unfortunately. I suspect some , privately , gain from it also in terms of access to games, subscriptions and so on. Not saying you are wrong of course , it’s a widespread problem in the sense that they are supposed to work to get our money however I think that’s been forgotten and then liberties get taken.

"Additionally, we know that the PS4 community will transition to PS5 at different times, and we’re happy to announce PS4 versions of some of our exclusives. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Sackboy A Big Adventure, and Horizon Forbidden West will also launch on PS4. While these three games were designed to take advantage of PS5 and its unique next-gen features like the ultra-high-speed SSD and DualSense controller, PS4 owners will also be able to enjoy these experiences when they launch. The PS4 digital versions of launch games include a free upgrade on both PS5 consoles, while the PS4 disc versions of these games include a free upgrade on the PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-Ray disc drive."

That looks clear to me, the upgrade should be free.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

What about people (like me) who have my big TV set up in the living room with my PS5, and my old PS4 Pro in the den? My gaming time is usually pretty limited, and I never know which TV will be free. I'd like to play the game on both systems (passing back and forth from day to day) but it sounds like I can't do that without buying the ultraspecialuberedition of the game for $80. And even then, it's not understood how exactly those cloud saves are going to work between the two systems since every PlayStation game seems to be different.

Meanwhile I bought Hades on Xbox, and I can play it on my Series X, One X, PC, and even my phone - and everything syncs automatically. I can boot the game up on any system and I'm exactly right where I left off the last time I played. It just works. I didn't have to pay extra for any of this, hell I didn't even need to buy the game since it was on Game Pass. And it's not just this one game that does that', it's built into the architecture of their ecosystem.

Sony can get fucked with these paid upgrades. I've only bought one PS5 game so far (Demon's Souls) and I'm seriously considering dumping both of my Sony consoles over this kind of shit.

The price difference is stupid enough, but they should at least offer a seperate upgrade path instead of 'forcing' you to buy the most expensive edition. Lots will buy the PS4 version because they simply cannot find a PS5.

It's very sad that Sony are moving away from the way they handled their business last generation, and are returning to the bad habits of the past. You'd have thought they would have learned a valuable lesson, but it appears not. As someone else has said - vote with your wallet. I'll be picking this game up now second hand.

You can play it on the PS5 though, right? You're just playing the PS4 version on that console and you pay the ten bucks extra for the bells and whistles. Not saying it's a good practice, but it feels disingenuous to say you "can't" just pay for the PS4 version and play it on a PS5. Unless I've missed something big.

That's a weird flex. Nintendo tier disrespect toward your loyal fans.
The difference is, their might eventually be a free upgrade.

Nintendo will charge full price forever. This does suck though. Not sure why Sony is taking this approach. Even if the upgrade is $10, is there no upgrade path at all?

There's really no defence for not allowing a consumer to buy both versions for $70 at once. Makes absolutely zero sense.

Mother-of-pearl, this is some infuriating stuff.

This is pretty bad in my opinion, and the kind of BS that is stopping me getting a PS5 anytime soon, especially compared to how MS do their Smart Delivery

I agree. I don't have a PS5 yet, and as much as I'd like to get one someday, this is certainly a reason to reconsider,

The whole thing is stupid, just pick a price and include all platforms like Microsoft does, be it $60 or $70. This just annoys people.

It's as simple as that.

The funny thing is that Sony has done this numerous times before for their digital downloads, in the form of cross-buy. They just need to implement full cross-buy here for all editions of the game, and extend that to physical disc copies as well.

Sony could greatly simplify this for both retailers and consumers by designing disc packaging that highlights "PS4/PS5" compatibility, maybe with a distinct banner. Microsoft has already done this for games that are compatible with Xbox One and Xbox Series X. Just take a cue from them.

Also, if they're concerned about a PS4-compatible Blu-ray disc not having enough capacity to store higher-quality PS5 assets, then include a second non-bootable data disc that contains just the PS5 assets. The second disc would only be used during the installation process, while the first (PS4-compatible) disc would be used as the "key" to boot the game.

This is disgusting from Sony and there's no excuse for it aside from greed. They're making Xbox look real good and that has to be bad for business.

I don't understand why console gamers go out of their way to buy $3,000 OLED TV's that are prone to image burn and unnecessary $400-$600 high speed NVMe gen4 drives while you could have spent that money on a perfectly good gaming PC with a 1440p monitor.

Windows 11 won't have this problem. My next hardware upgrade won't give me this problem either.

Remember when this was clowned on as a poor man's attempt at the "how to share games with friends on PS4" video
Still is.

Yes the Xbox way of doing things is simpler and easier but ...

The outrage over having PS4 and PS5 versions of games is just dumb. Buy the one you want/need. The pissing and moaning makes no sense.

Gotcha gamers!

You wont see Sony telling gamers to check out an old blog post before PS5 launched.

If they told gamers PS4 gamers will have to pay $10 upgrading to PS5 editions, gamers would fight back asap.

But charge $10 later on, and hope gamers didn't notice that blog post.
They did the same with the crossgen crap.

Sure, but then why should I bother even owning a PS5 at that point? In your scenario, I'd be better suited with 2 PS4s. Sony isn't making me feel great about owning a PS5.

Also, it's not a $10 upgrade. It's either you buy the $80 version to get both games to begin with, or if you want to play the PS5 version later you have to buy it outright for $70. If you only buy the PS4 version of the game for $60, your only "upgrade" costs another $70. This shit is literally insane.

Nah fuck that. Sony's policies are dog shit compared to Xbox. The more people are made aware of this the better. Sony policies should be clowned because they're awful.

and it was glorious. PSASBR on Vita and PS3. Sly Thieves in Time on Vita and PS3. Perfect for gameplay on the go and then playing couch co-op like in PSASBR

Yes, I did this with Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. I bought the physical disc for PS3, and it included the rights to download a digital copy of the game to PS Vita. I really thought that was a great thing for them to offer!

Sony also sold a physical PS Vita version for about $10 less, that did not include cross-buy with PS3. On the surface, this might look similar to what they are doing today. However, there are some key differences

  • PS Vita and PS3 used very different types of physical media. (This is why cross-buy was only offered for the PS3 version, and gave a digital download for Vita.)
  • Competitors were not offering similar cross-buy features at that time, whereas Microsoft has been promoting their own cross-buy for the last few years.

As it is now, PS4 and PS5 use very similar media, so that's not an excuse anymore.

With Microsoft pushing cross-buy and extending it to physical releases, it should inspire Sony to do the same thing. Otherwise, it causes consumers to believe that Sony is either very greedy and/or technologically inferior by comparison.

You have missed the bit where you can't upgrade for 10 bucks.
