Nier Replicant Ver. 1.22474487139 - The Final Preview

Check out our hands-on final preview after about 16 hours with Nier Replicant Ver. 1.22474487139, the remaster of 2010's Nier Replicant, a Japan-only version of Nier that features a younger protagonist, but largely the same classic story from renown game developer, Yoko Taro.

This preview covers an overview of Nier Replicant, while also specifically diving into combat, the Aerie, and the Junk Heap, which are the three parts of the preview build that we are allowed to talk about.

The IGN preview doesn't seem to tell shit beyond that it's a remake of an alternative version of a PS3 game.

The "before you buy video" from gaming Bolt covers a lot more ground.

Here are the bullet points according to their Video:
  • Remake/Remaster of the Japanese PS3 version of Nier that featured a younger protagonist.
  • Takes place thousands of years before Automata. Zero knowledge is required.
  • Visual Upgrade... Duh!...
  • Combat closer to Automata, but simultaneously slower paced to be also close to the original.
  • Many areas have been expanded to have more exploration.
  • There will be more story content, both expanded from the original and brand new!
  • It will be fully voiced for all characters!
  • The voice over have been redone with the same cast, with the exception of the legendary Alan Rickman who was... unavailable.
  • There might be DLC...
  • And the PC requirements... I don't care about those. This is a console game.
I played the original on PS3, but I couldn't continue beyond the first ending. The graphics were bad, the combat dated, there was to much text to read (those who played it know what I mean). I've heard that Taros original plan was to have the older guy as the protagonist, but ScEnix had none of it, saying that older guys don't sell games in Japan, thus only the Japanese PS3 had the Replicant version, while all the rest where the Gestalt versions.

Actually its the opposite, the only reason they made older Nier is to appeal to western audience.

After the shitty Automata performance i will wait and see how good the PC port is.

Brother Nier was always canon. Dad Nier was made specifically for the Western market back when they still thought Westerners only liked protags that looked like Conan the Barbarian. This is no longer a delusion that Japan labors under, so the canon version of Nier is the one that will be released as the remaster.

The previews all sound really positive, can't wait to have my heart torn out and stamped on again!

I do wonder though if Yoko is going to take the opportunity to soften things up a little bit in terms of the harsh emotionality of the story. He's mentioned that the impact of the second route was a lot more abrasive than what was intended and in so doing created a different impression to what he was going for.

The requirements for a PC port of a japanese game don't mean the game will be locked at that fps if you have that HW, it most likely means the game can run at 60fps in gameplay. I wish to be pleasantly surprised.

For someone who has only played Automata (and loved it), is this something that I should definitely play?

It will be interesting for people who started with Automata finding out who Devola and Popola are, who Emil is, and also there's a couple of places in Automata which are references to places originally seen in Replicant.

SPOILERS FOR REPLICANT FOLLOW

In many ways though, people who started with Automata are lucky since they wouldn't actually know that humanity was extinct, something which is made certain by your actions in Replicant. The twist in Automata where you find out humanity is already gone loses it's value as a surprise if you played Automata after Replicant and knew it was 8,000 years after the events of Replicant.

Oh, I forgot. It was four years ago ... "Nier Replicant v1.22 has been mastered! (Long ago)", so with the approval of DLC (how free this time!), It's finally a paragraph. Please look forward to the announcement of the contents of the DLC and the release date. We are accepting reservations! !! Please buy it!

My preorder has sat in my digital library for a couple days now :)

I actually cancelled the special edition because I wanted to afford more games. It does look awesome. I watched the sample music trailer and that brought back a lot of memories.

I'm just getting NieR. I can't even keep up with what I'm buying lately because there's so much stuff. Didn't fully finish Mario 3D World or even start Bravely Default II. 70 hours into Monster Hunter Rise. NieR next week. Got like 4 indie games on sale the other day ... :lollipop_anguish:
