HDTVTEST: Sorry, but Horizon Forbidden West's Gorgeous Visuals are TAINTED by Distracting Picture Quality Bugs

I'm sorry to hear GG having difficulty with the PS5 version's image quality vs. performance. It seems to have many gamers here a little frustrated with not getting the excellent detailed world without unacceptable cuts in image quality or framerate. If they can't fix the issues, many of us might have to wait for the PC version unfortunately.

Or you could simply try it out on PS5. Because not everybody seems to experience these issues.

Although I won't expect you to do it as its quite clear what your intention is posting this paragraph here.

But it's weird all the same, if you have a look at Guerrilla's tweet you'll see a lot of people saying that the hot fix has done nothing for them. Since I haven't had the opportunity to try the game myself and I've only watched some videos on YouTube I could not tell, to be honest. 🤷‍♂️

Anyway I hope Guerrilla will fixed soon, whatever it is.
I don't think the shimmering issue is what people are thinking in this forum because of that thread. What's being described in the vid with it going darker in motion isn't what I would typically call shimmering. I think shimmering and what has been fixed is the plants flashing in and out of view or flashing black because the texture is showing then not showing.

But we know Performance mode is blurry because reviewers said so.
DF even said their preferred mode was Resolution.
There shouldn't even be a performance mode in this game in my opinion. It just ruins all their hard work making a very detailed game, but then people go and ruin that by switching to a low-res shimmery experience. You literally lose so much of the fine details by doing that.

I tried out performance mode for a few minutes and it was like playing the PS4 game again. I didn't buy a PS5 to play PS4-looking games.

Look I get that you prefer 30fps. But, the fact is, most people prefer to play at 60 frames. You can check out any polls that people ran here about the matter, the option for 60fps/high frames ALWAYS got most votes. The solution is not to eliminate 60fps mode, but to make it better.

I dunno about that. MOST people will play at whatever the default is. Also, around here at least, it seems like MOST people prefer the 30fps mode on HFW since it looks so much better than performance mode.

Performance mode seems like an afterthought. Like they designed the game around a very detailed 4K picture, but then they're like... well, some people won't buy it if there's no 60fps mode, so here you go. Drop the resolution down to something ridiculously blurry and call it a day. It's almost like no optimization was done for 60fps.

I still think there should've only been one mode. Playing on performance is like watching a movie in full-screen instead of wide screen. You're not really getting the experience that they intended. You're losing out on lots of detail

^check any of the recent polls here. There is a clear preference for 60fps. Sure some people will stick to whatever the default is and won't even know there are options, but people in the know (like posters here) who knows the pros and cons of both modes, prefer 60fps according to the polls. HFW is a case where the game has some issues in the performance mode. But I don't see a single reason to can the mode. What everyone wants is it to be better. Use native 1440p instead of CBR. Have a better anti aliasing solution to eliminate shimmering (many games already have far better AA at similar resolutions). Just saying to drop performance mode is incredibly short sighted.

Literally every tech reviewer is saying this.

Why is this game such a shimmery mess in fps mode?

Lost Legacy looks fine in 1440P but Horizon jeez looks like complete ass.
Because 1440p is 3.7 million pixels and 1800cb is 2.8 million pixels. It is right in the middle of 1080p 2.1 million pixels and 1440p. The game might also have some other DRS techniques going on bringing it all the way down to 1080p. Or its the checkerboard artifacts on the foliage causing extra shimmering. Native 1296p which is around 2.7 million pixels might actually be better in this scenario.

Neogaf isnt a good measure of things. You would be better off posting what developers have seen considering they track all that stuff now. (without permission I might add)

This thread is pathetic, every pool on gaf 60fps wins by landslide and suddenly 30fps is ok? Outside of 2 or 3 people I've never seen green rats saying they'd prefer 30fps, it's a Sony fanboy thing

Also, just started my ignore list after 2 years here
😂 What the fuck has this got to do with sony fanboys and green rats? There is a 30fps and 60fps mode in this game. You can choose what you want and some people prefer 30fps with better visuals. What's the problem with that? what's it got to do with fanboys?

I mean "green rats" always talk about FS2020 visuals and that's 30fps with no choice. Suddenly 30fps was 'ok' there too?

What the fuck are you even talking about? Get your fucking head out of your ass and stop trying to make this about console wars.

Anyone who has played the game including DF and HDTVTech has pointed out just how awful 60 fps looks in this game. This has nothing to do with 30 fps vs 60 fps. It is about how poor the game looks in 60 fps and how stuttery the game looks in 30 fps. It looks off in BOTH modes.

How in the fuck does some watch that video and make it about console wars is beyond me. I swear to god, some of you people need to be in a mental asylum.

I SWEAR TO GOD ON MY LIFE

There is something wrong with the 30fps on my tv.

I dont know what it is. I have the xbr900h.

I can not play horizon at 30fps on it on my PS5. It has this stutter or something to it. Everyone is saying "30fps is fine in horizon. Youre just blind"

Its legit pissing me off, because on PS4 and my old tv, I used to play 30fps just fine. And I want to play at 30fps because horizon just looks so much better, but I cant. And I fucked around with my settings, but it always has this stutter that I just cant get rid of.......

Well, if those obsessive wankers say it then I guess you HAVE to think it too.
Nah, I dont have to think it. I just have to SEE it. You just choose not to believe your own eyes or listen to expert analysis and just live in your own bizarre alternate reality where things that look bad in real life look great in your reality. It's called delusion.

1800 CBR is just embarrassingly low resolution for 60fps on a cross gen game, I'm sure they could do better than that. Either take it to 2160 CBR or straight 1440p, it can't be any worse.
id rather have the 1440p option but dumb ass sony hasnt given us that yet

Try disabling motion blur and set camera sensitivity to minimum on both horizontal and vertical axis. It made the game playable for me in 30 fps. I had the same issues.

120hz TV? FS has a similar issue it has some wierd stutter on 120hz TVs I think because it doubles or triples the actual framerate. Have you also tried this

PS5's home screen, head to 'Settings', which can be found in the top right-hand corner. Select 'Screen and Video' and go to 'Video Output'. You can then select whether to enable or disable 120Hz output under 'Enable 120Hz Output'.

Disable it if it's enabled and see if it's smoother.

The default HDR is def not ideal, saw the following HDR settings for using HGIG and gaming on an LG C1 or CX OLED and they do make the game look so much better. Try this:
  • Brightness: - 2
  • Shadows: 0 (default)
  • Highlights: - 8
So much more resolved detail in the clouds.

I'll try these both out and report what I find.

The x900h is a 120 fps tv that actually supports 4k 120 hz output. The first Sony tv. This is very interesting. I had no idea the tv would do that. All I know is that my LG CX's 4k 120 hz mode lowers the frametime by almost 30% at the same refresh rate so I always play at 120 hz.

I will give this a shot, but right now, outside of when its snowing or raining, 30 fps feels much much smoother than it did before i disabled motion blur and camera sensitivity. I think Vincent is on to something here with the camera movement causing brightness fluctuations. It is far more noticeable on OLEDS than LEDs like the Sony x900h. I have that tv too. I will see if its better on that tv.

Saw this on era. Just insane how much detail is lost when going from 30 fps to the 60 fps performance mode. And this doesnt even show the shimmering that plagues all foliage scenes in gameplay.

Zoom in on Aloy's face but even the armored dude near the camera has all of its details blurred out. There is no way this is 1800p cb. Feels like 1080p at best.

I have the PS5 hooked up to that TV and did not have any stuttering issues. I was actually quite impressed at how smooth the 30 was compared to other 30fps games.

Strange how it varies, however.

lol Just having a bad morning. Woke up to 10 LOL reactions to my post which was trying to HELP people suffering from stuttering in the 30 fps mode. It worked for me. It worked for my friends. Figured id share it here. I will never understand why people take offense to others going out of their way to help them. Then you have others trying to make this a 30 fps vs 60 fps issue when 90% of the video is about how the 30 fps option in the game isnt good enough either. It's like people dont even read or watch the OP anymore, and just go off on their soapbox.

Yeah, but at 60fps lol. I should try those and see. But I would need to download them again which will take time.
