I am going to save this comment just in case.It sounds like a load of garbage to me. I seriously doubt ND would go that far into extreme SJW territory.

This reads like EA's contrived Dante's Inferno "protest".
>drum up controversy for game on 4chan
>game gets discussed and fanboys rally to defend/attack it, boosting those search-engine rankings
>game releases and now a ton of people want to see if the controversy was true leading to more searches and purchases
>???

It doesn't concern me at all, I just find the entitlement of what content other people should create ironic. And yeah, I wouldn't either if I was in your shoes.
Not in all cases, no. But in some cases? Sure. And I specifically mentioned the chatter and curiosity that gets drummed up for a game, not the sales alone. You really think in today's economic climate people will be willing to shell out 60 bucks just to check if a months-old rumour is true, as opposed to watching a one-minute review on YouTube?
Hardly. There's a difference between someone complaining and someone screeching about dogma. If someone feels the game shouldn't include "a story of revenge against a homophobic christian cult" because it seems lame or they feel it doesn't play off the franchise's greatest strengths, so be it. I might not agree with their opinion, but that isn't comparable to those who whine about lack of representation.Nobody criticising the plot in the political terms they're criticising will ever be able to say a word to the people who complain about lack of rerpesentation of minories in video games. Not a word.
They are doing the exact same thing.
it's a bit ironic that people complain so much about people that are just creating content based on their perspective of the world, it's in essence none of your business, don't buy the game if it's a problem for you. Don't complain about about liberals creating art and why they don't create art that confirms your view of the world (why should they?). Just go and create you're own great video games, films that submit to your view of the world. It's a bit like complaining "how can french people speak French and not English".
It's a Jewish liberal creating The Last of US 2, why the f**** would he create a game of what you deem right and he clearly doesn't. Don't get angry just because his content is better than yours.
Ok, check this out:Usually plots in this vein are designed to preach to you and I do play games for the story. I won't buy the game if the title could be "the fantabulous lesbian adventures of Ellie in the apocalypse against evil white man...oh there are zombies too".
We are pointing out the hypocrisy and double standards.
You can make a game about evil white christians, but you can't make a game about evil brown muslims because it would be labelled as racist and islamophobic by the same type of people who are doing the evil white christians game.
Also, in a world in which muslims are killing gays everyday it's kind of ironic to go against christians on this.
The rumoured main villain

The analogue to that would be people who complain about "a story of revenge against a homophobic christian cult" because they believe christianity shouldn't be shown in a negative light ( …)
Don't misunderstand: I don't think Naughty Dog is intentionally leaking a rumor about Last of Us II (a la Dante's Inferno) to drum up controversy, only that these rumors are so silly that it reads like a botched attempt to do so.If you mean inconsequential chatter that dies out after a week or two, sure. It seems such an elaborate roadmap, for something so innocuous. The game has been delayed indefinitely. The timing of the leak is bizarre, if indeed it's part of that plan.
Uhhh I don't see what you are referring to. A significant portion of the complaints aren't about "how dare they portray the group I'm affiliated with under a negative light". The complaints are about how this plot element -- if true, which I doubt -- seems shoehorned into a game that is decidedly post-morality, as is the case with any good apocalyptic adventure. And there are complaints that the devs could've gone with a different religion instead of christianity because that is overplayed.A significant portion of the complaints around here is a variation on the theme of "how dare they portray the group I'm affiliated with under a negative light?". That's exactly the mistake the other side makes. They mistake fiction for real-life. If having a fictional religious character be the bad guy were an indictment of the real-world religious group, so would having an Asian guy be the bad guy be an indictment on real-life Asians or having an assexual girl be the baddie an indictment on assexual people. This is precisely the reason you have the other side up in arms over controversies such as that of KCD.,
One is the carbon copy of the other.
As for claims that the plot makes no sense in the context of a zombie apocalypse, on the contrary. It's because the event is so traumatic, that Ellie is allegedly willing to risk her life to take revenge. It is precisely because their beliefs are the most important thing in their lives to this sect are willing to risk their lives to act them out irrationally.
No, I think you're interpreting it that way. After reading through the thread, I have not found a single complaint that christianity shouldn't be portrayed in a negative light. The closest would be people complaining that the devs are targeting christianity because it's an "easy target" instead of going after muslims, which would be more realistic and more controversial. There are countless details missing in the leak that potentially could bring coherence , interest an nuance to the plot. This knee-jerk rejection in absolute terms is politically-motivated.
That's precisely what a significant portion of he negative reactions here amount to. Precisely.
The OG TLOU game was SJW material, so that wouldnt be a change... How deep they go this time around the vengeful aspect of SJWnes is the question. It's no longer edgy to single out christian cults for their bigotry when you refuse to acknowledge that other groups of mainly religious people are just as bad or worse... On account that they are inherently oppressed, all of them. The movement is more about control and complete compliance than an actual set of values. You can't take a beloved property and then shove it with woke ideology and expect the fans to be happy about it, even worse to turn around and call them bigots and whatnot
Ok, check this out:
so what you're saying is - you hate it now and you're not going to play it, because you found out it's a lesbian murdering Christian anti-gay bigots in revenge for her girlfriend. Really???
Youre talking about the industry as a whole, I'm talking about this game and its setting, and if leak is true, the setting and story makes sense
So 'you keep mentioning USA' statement is because it's based in.........wait you've guessed it, the USA
Why u brough up eu to me is weird, since that's got nothing to do with where this game takes place
Cool story, bro. Still completely irrelevant because we're talking about TLOU2 set in the US and not "the industry as a whole". But please, keep trying to hammer that round peg into that square hole.

I don't have a strong opinion on either one of those. Like I said, it reads as typical online marketing boredom where people get spun around by fake (or real?) leaks and then argue about it, ultimately putting more spotlight on the game in question. The element of people getting mad because "they're just like those SJWs" is missing. And I see that comparison brought up quite rapidly in discussions nowadays. Any complaining is quickly countered with "y-you're just like the SJWs you claim to hate". Kinda like the worn-out argument of "[politician] supporters are doing exactly what they claim to hate. You hypocrites".
It's non-conversation. The last thing the internet needs more of is sideline referees trying to say "y'know, everyone in this thread is acting just like their opponents heh heh suckers" with an aloof grin on their face. When it applies, go for it. I don't think it applies in this case, not in the least.

Claiming that christianity shouldn't be portrayed in a negative light is silly but I don't see that taking place in this thread. I think you're injecting your own interpretations into other people's reactions.

This is something that activists in Hollywood have been attempting to do with very little success.
Something that creators kind of forget about is that there is a degree of responsibility to the fanbase when creating something given that these kind of properties wouldn't exist without the fans.
Seems like the truth is in there, somewhere. Too bad I saw the thread title, wish I could've experienced it first-hand when it came out.
Assertions without proof -- with a side-helping of "well of course you wouldn't see it" -- are hardly worth my time. Feel free to reply when you're more comfortable backing your claims up. For someone making such statements so deliberately, you seem awfully skittish to point to one single example of someone claiming that christianity shouldn't be cast in a negative light, thinly-veiled or overt or otherwise. All I know is 1 ) the leak is at least compatible with official promo material released so far and 2) is compatible with the scenario of a zombie apocalypse.
If I had to bet I'd say they'll be going with a generic religious sect, not explicitly associated with any real-life denomination. They can get the message across without risking alienating a decent chunk of their audience.
Oh, but they are. Some are thinly disguised, others are quite overt. I could spell it out in the most explicit terms, but I would be getting into sensitive territory. Just go though the thread with an impartial mind. You won't be able o miss them.
Why would groups which place their religious convictions at the top and centre of their lives suddenly change their worldview and modus operandi? Especially if they saw the zombie apocalypse as further evidence that their convictions were true and as an opportunity to act them out?
It makes perfect sense.
I strongly disagree that dystopia entails post-morality.
This is where the complaints betray the real motivation behind the uproar. If the issue were internal logic and consistency, surely there would be an almost universal acknowledgment that this religious affiliation in particular makes more sense and would be more probable in an American setting than some other religious affiliation that happens to be dominant in some other part of the globe.
I completely agree with you that the typical accusation is often used with no grounds and just as a way to dismiss the complaints. And I have often raised my voice against that tactic. But that's not what's a happening here. Here we have the exact same thought process, just with different content.
In the same way that automatically appealing to symmetry seems to be a dismissive tactic, the claim that the symmetry never ever occurs can also be a dismissive tactic. I am not making the claim lightly. I am being very deliberate. It's the exact same thing.
I'm terribly sorry, but given your own position, I might be forgiven for not expecting otherwise. This is all I'm going to say on the matter.
This would require me to go into sensitive matters and I won't.
But, more realistic, you say? In the US?
We'll never agree on this.
Are you saying you won't whine when someone makes a game dismissing progressive agendas and trans/lesbians all while praising christianity? This is exactly the entitlement I mean. There are not Activists in Hollywood, there are People creating stories they want to create. If I write a book it's my book, there's no real responsibility to the reader or the fanbase. It's not your game, you didn't create it, you didn't spend hours planing it, writing it, coding it. It's not peoples responsibility to work blood, sweat and tears to create something that conforms to your opinion and pleases you. Paint your own Painting. It's their creation and you can like and celebrate it or not.
This is not about being conservative, but this notion that female, lesbian, gay, jewish, whatever creatives better create content that conforms to your world view is just absurd. why would anyone.
Ok, check this out:

We're all buddies here. The behavior you're describing isn't ban-worthy even if it's annoying or hypocritical, nor is calling it out ban-worthy.And you can't fathom why that would be?
Really?
Feel free to PM me if you are really interested in being provided evidence, without me having to risk reply-bans and warnings.
Best wishes.
Are you saying you won't whine when someone makes a game dismissing progressive agendas and trans/lesbians all while praising christianity?
Why you feel comfortable calling me out on positions I never held while being too afraid to call out the people who (supposedly) made them in this thread is beyond me. It reeks of internet forum sideline referee nonsense.
No, I won't talk about it in PMs. If you can't back up your claims in the light, then don't make them in the first place.
We are pointing out the hypocrisy and double standards.

This is a stupid comparison, and a highly disingenuous framing of what is actually going on. If I thought you were joking that would be one thing, but I don't think you are. Because some people are definitely deranged enough to believe this type of bullshit. How inaccurate. In a time of of a virus crisis, certain Christians don't want to kill JUST the LGBT community.
They want to kill as many people indiscriminately as they possibly can!!!
But to be fair, Naughty Dog wrote this story well before the Coronavirus hit, so they now have time to update the story.
Ellie: Joel, we have to get out of here, there's people going to church nearby!
Joel: Why Ellie, they're not bothering us.
Ellie: Because one of the deacons was bit shortly before the service and now everyone got bit!
Joel: The fuck?! Why wouldn't they cancel the service if they knew someone might be infected?!
Ellie: They said it was "infringing on their religious freedom" and "they're an essential business", whatever that bullshit means.
Joel: Well, fuck this noise, let's get out of here before they infect us!
Bioware’s been a sinking ship for the last decade, since the doctors left. When you’re at the top of your game with strong leadership you have no need for the likes of Anita’s consulting services.
Like its ever been about 'inequality' or 'helping the poor'. Who do you think you're fooling? If a game like that ever comes, I don't think it will be the alt right coding it either.I'll probably be first in line to play that trainwreck of a game The point is that most stories since the beginning of time are about peoples struggle for freedom, acceptance and self-expression (it's right there in the Bible) not about how you can make people that don't concern you feel miserable about themselves and keep them small.
I actually wish some alt righters would band together and code such a game, because fantasizing about it in theory and actually playing a game with the main story being about how trans/gay people need to be treated unequally, poor people with health issues need to be left to die and women's place is in the kitchen is quit a different story. Nothing about this is even remotely christian. Sure that will be fun.
If the Last of Us 2 has this story, it's obviously not about loving, reasonable christians. It's about those fundamentalist Christians, that are abusing and misusing it's teaching to make people feel miserable, it's about those us churches that supported throwing your kid out on the street and stop talking to them if they're gay and those groups that financially helped and push Uganda to ratify the death penalty for homosexuals.
Surely it's not about Eli slicing evil Red Cross workers....
That’s basically how I feel too. Every group she and Joel have ran across so far has been hostile, even in the quarantine zones. And then you have the infected. The first game showed a roving group of ex-military that would kill random people they came across to steal any supplies they may have collected. Then there was David's group, of course, filled with cannibals who may have been raping the women they came across.
These things are easy enough to believe in the game's setting. I just find it really hard to believe in a religious group that travels the dangerous lands, risking infection, all just to root out gays. That just feels like it wouldn't happen. We'll see, though.
She already tried.Anita's consulting services. I love this. She should start this as her next money-scamming scheme.
Anita's Consulting Service - We guarantee to kill the sales of your next game
I wonder what people would say if the homophobic cult was Islamic instead of christian.
I can see the main villain being homophobic and being a personal hate or vendetta of sort.
But a homophobic cult? Like, really?
Didnt realise muslims killing gay people in America was at such a high level
Wonder what Amy Hennig’s up to lately.
Fugly girl with a giant nose shaped like the prototype PS3 controller is the object of everyone's obsession? Lol get the fuck out of here.
I hate that this sounds entirely plausible. This is Cuckmann's game after all.
Probably not posted thereI wonder whats the reaction of people there
They havent talk about this?
Your whataboutism is completely irrelevant. You can jump through as many hoops as you want but in the end the game is set in the US and that's what this thread is about. Go to the politics section is you want to go on about Muslims but this game never talks about that and it isn't relevant to the game's setting. It's time to stop this pathetic whataboutism. When the industry as a whole uses the same tired trope, hence the reason the majority in this thread have rolled their collective eyes at this possible storyline, you dont get to decide that the game can only be discussed in a bubble. Thats you trying to set the terms of the conversation in a way that places your favorite thing as beyond criticism.
When your first reaction is to label someone racist simply because they have acknowledged observable facts and patterns, its pretty clear that you dont live in the real world and dont want to acknowledge that Christians arent the only ones who behave this way.
What business do you have discussing social and political issues and the games that feature them and labeling others as racist or alt right when you refuse to accept the facts that go against your preferred narrative?
It'd be like calling the mainstream media scare scaremongers because they referred to a repeat murderer, as a serial killer. Thats not scare mongering, that a fact proven in a court of law.
I assume they're referring to all of the religious people that have gone and broken confinement to go to church along with the religious leaders that have told people to do so. France is pretty much in the Covid shit it's in because of a church gathering. In the US churches are still telling people to go despite bans, and you have the Televangelists telling people that they can cure the virus, if only you keep supporting them. Throw in some good old fashioned minority blaming, like I linked before and you're good to go.This is a stupid comparison, and a highly disingenuous framing of what is actually going on. If I thought you were joking that would be one thing, but I don't think you are. Because some people are definitely deranged enough to believe this type of bullshit.
...You guys are pretty poorly placed to say anything about Anita seeing as this whole thread is full of people telling a dev what they can & can't put in a game. This is high cancel culture at work.Anita's consulting services. I love this. She should start this as her next money-scamming scheme.

Ever hear of the Pulse night club shooting? 49 dead just for being gay. And considering how small their numbers are, it's probably disproportionate to the average from other groups.
Good. I wasn’t interested in the first place after seeing those few early trailers, famous kiss was near breaking point (meaning I would get it when it’s 20$). But now I can’t wait to see reactions to this Druckmann’s shit show.
As someone has said, this is not 2014 and this year is really really bad time to push stuff like this down someone’s throat. During the crises, people don’t really care about this kind of stuff, it’s just gonna drive them off. If it was normal time, I could see Druckmann thinking this was gonna break some barriers in gaming, draw huge media attention etc but now....man....I’m starting to think supply chains weren’t the only reason they delayed this game.
