The strength of the first Last of Us is not the story in and of it's self. It's actually pretty B tier post apocalyptic rehash stuff thematically. It's the quality of the acting and the overall execution of that story that make it amazing. In particular the way they paired the gameplay and story so exceptionally well.

RE TLOU2, I could care less about the story arch, shit you could even tell me the whole thing, wouldn't make a difference. If they have a message/agenda to get across with their game, it will be the quality with which they tell that story that will determine whether it's good or not. The closer they can get us to believing we are stepping into the shoes of real people experiencing those issues/situations the better. And if it ends up pandering or preachy then not so much.

I have 100% faith in that teams ability to produce well acted mature content for adult audiences.

I wouldn’t say it is faith in humanity, but rather it sounds way more cartoony compared to what the first game and side DLC.

The first game was very dark. And it seemed believable that the enemies they faced wouldn’t care if she was a child. They would kill and steal their stuff. Even eat them lol. Because everyone’s motivation was survival. People going into gun fights with baseball bats because that’s all they had and you had little ammo.

Who knows, maybe it is told incredibly well and isn’t head scratching.

It could also be the source of the rumor, someone just watching that and taking a leap from there but it's not too far fetched. But I don't want them to be a main topic of every post apocalyptic story... At least for one let the post apocalypse focus on itself and not "human is a real monster cliche".
Maybe Walking Dead was too extreme example as I find "trash people" or "zombie people" extremely unlikely for anyone to agree to live ad behave in such a group.
As for crazy religious people... We have enough of real life crazies like that and it would probably be a case but it's just a tired topic
