Also, purely in terms of acting (_not_ looks or actual lines - which I realize is hard to separate from acting), how do you rank Padme/Leia/Jyn/Rey?

I actually thought Felicity Jones did a fine job. Her character was not amazing, but I think she did ok with what she had. Rey is a more interesting character, but Daisy Ridley is actually pretty bad. I actually thought Carrie Fisher did a good job in the OT.

Not sure if I want to think about Padme at all.

I can legit see Leia being killed of in EP 8/9 so Kylo can fully embrace the dark side. We already have 2 strong female characters anyway. Rey and Phasma.

Yeah Starkiller's weakness just seemed to be inherent to it's design of containing the energy of a star.

Plus the good guys only killed it because Han invented some magical new, never-before-seen, theoretically suicidal maneuver. It's hard to develop countermeasures against attack vectors that don't even exist yet.

They set up the character development for a trilogy, it's weak with the idea of it being standalone.

It's Star Wars.

Tarkin might not have worked but it was more impressive than any CG effect in TFA.

Point.

Eh? Rey was cool but super perfect. She's still more fun than Jyn but at this point, comparing the two movies, I'm way more attached to Jyn. Poe was perfection so yeah. Finn was your typical defector character, Cassien as a Rebel but a shitty person was infinitely more interesting to me. Plus K2 is legit the best character out of the last two films.

Yes, the Droid was the best side character introduced in a long time in the franchise.

This is the first film that has shown the Rebel alliance as something other than paragons of virtue, and the first film to show any kind of collateral damage for their conflicts with the empire. It makes the SW universe actually feel like a place, rather than just a series of CGI backdrops.

Padme is gutter trash so let's get that out of the way.
Jyn was good I think, not perfect but I liked her.
Rey has this weird thing where her actual actions and emotions are great but her delivery isn't super strong
Leia is kinda the opposite.

can we make a trump-esque Sheev twitter account?

Sheev and Trump aren't anything alike though. Trump's an idiot who appealed to idiots. Sheev is a devious and manipulative high class politician.

If they were similar, Palpatine wouldn't have had to conceal his plan. He'd have just said HEY GUYS I HATE ALIENS and the Senate would've made him emperor!

Carrie is way better than all of them

Was getting caught part of your plan?
Emperor Sheev Palpatine

Tell the rebel scum we don't want the Death Star plans they stole back - they can keep it! #MTGGA
Rebels complaining about building another Death Star but they're the ones who blew up the first one anyway. Sad! #crookedmothma

Well, it makes sense tho. Since he did have death sentences all of the galaxy, it kind of makes sense he actually was on other planets you know. Some if you are really nit picking.

Why was this something we needed to see? I mean it makes sense that Red/Gold leaders were part of the space battle, it makes sense Mon Mothma is there, it makes sense that Bail Organa is there, it makes sense that Tarkin is there, and even if I thought it was a little unnecessary, it makes sense that Leia was included.

There is no reason that these two guys show up here, bumping into two incredibly important Star Wars characters, only to meet two more incredibly important Star Wars characters a week later. And both groups' missions are focused around the Death Star plans. It's shit like this, like Chewie knowing Yoda or like Anakin building C-3PO that makes the galaxy feel small.

I should've waited until I saw the movie before I bought a Disney Store Phasma.

The BB-8 Disney Store one is awesome, though.

Hot take I think Leia will die and cause Kylo to reconsider assholism.
I don't think he gives a shit about either of his parents considering he just killed his own father.

But yeah I don't see him staying evil. Which is why we need another true Darth Vader esque figure, especially after what Edwards delivered in Rogue One.

She is going to convince him to return to Matt.

He presumably already fully embraced it at the end of VII. Doing that again would be really stretching it. It's also a way to justify making him stronger than Vader eventually; Vader still had some good in him, Kylo can do more now that he has none left. No point in delaying that to IX.

Considering he never really spoke about her in TFA, I wonder if his hatred is reserved for Han.

But if he hated Han, then killing him should've been easy. His dad reaching out to him is what was causing him to be "tempted by the light". It's the opposite from the norm - he views his love for his father as his weakness.

You know what the Rogue One score needs more of?

Xylophones.

He both loved and hated Han at the same time.

This is one of the few times where you can say they were trying to directly rip off ANH
It was the most on the nose definitely
I would assume that the weakness was in the inner design of the core and therefore not easy to engineer out? It would have also possibly delayed the project further.
At least he wasn't responsible for the vent. They probably thought that having a shield and the fleet next to the Death Star would be sufficient.
Thinking about it, considering it needed the force in the end it wasn't actually that much of a weakness in the first place.
All they really needed to do was have a backup thingy or in general to split the load among multiple smaller thingies.
I mean the Starkiller weakness is way less obvious or exposed. They actually need to get passed the shield, disable the shield so a squadron can get in, open a hole in the building, then blow it up from the inside. It's quite a bit more involved then shooting some boogers down a chimney.
While starkiller base was shielded the garrison's reaction was much slower and worse guarded.

Yep. Han tried to save him and he knew it. If Leia shows the same kind of affection or effort maybe he'll try to straighten up.

Going to wait for a re-watch at home, but i think Rogue One is now my favorite in the series with Episode 4/5 both a close second. Got choked up for K2 and Yen's death scene's which surprised me as that doesn't normally happen. The whole Scarif sequence had me super enthralled all around as well.

The movie had some issues early on (weird pacing stuff jumping from planet to planet) but damn if it didn't deliver when everyone knew the outcome before it started.

Did Crooked Mothma help disgusting (check out sex hologram & past) Jyn Erso become a rebel spy so she could use her in the Scarif raid? #MTGGA

Just realized the woman who played Mon Mothma in this movie also played her in the deleted scenes in Revenge of the Sith. That gives a cool bit of continuity, even if they did delete all rebellion scenes.
