When running the Prime95 test, it sits at 1.176 in load after about an hour of testing. Running fine and no crashing.

So if idle is 1.14v and load is 1.17v, you have too much LLC. Try Level 4. Adjust until the load vcore is just below idle.
You can also see that you have a big Vdrop of 0.08v! And a Vrise of 0.03v. You don't need to test this for an hour, just a minute to get the vcore reading.

Your going to need around 1.32v to get the load vcore near 1.24v since we know the Vdrop is 0.08v.

Thanks guys. One more question..

My CPU fan is throttling up and down pretty dramatically while it's coming out of low vcore and hitting max speeds, then shoots straight back down. This is pretty annoying. Sometimes when I'm playing a game I can hear the fan rev up quickly and return to quiet operation, literally as I'm attacking something in a video game and when I stop. Or it can happen shortly after I've played a game or done something CPU intensive and I'm trying to simply surf the web. If I'm just on the desktop and open Chrome, my fans shoot up loudly and fall back down.

I tried doing the auto fan adjustment in the BIOS which did help, but it's still very loud and distracting. Any ideas? Thanks again for the help.

You need to install the asus software then use fan xpert to increase the spin up and spin down times. Default is like 0.5seconds, I set it to 10 seconds to get rid of this effect.

Skylake temps spike all over the place compared to chips of the past, so it's a new problem.

Decided to get the X99 Deluxe II now when Intel releases the 6900K

Hope it is VR G2 ready with USB 3.1... but it has ASMedia chips.. so who knows... Oculus seem to hate them :(

Wow, if this fixes my problem.. well thanks either way but I'll be one happy guy. Nothing worse than raining down a few meteors on a pile of enemies only to have your CPU's fan going off like a buzzsaw in your ear, then instantly silence. It's almost like I prepare myself before every attack.. it's that sensitive (playing Grim Dawn).

I'm assuming it would be a good idea to default all settings in my BIOS before I install and run the software.

Nah just configure the fans in the software and you'll be fine. You can create the curves too or just used fixed speeds.

So I'm thinking about upgrading my PC and I could use some advice.

Right now I'm using an i5-4670K CPU, 16gb DDR3 and a GTX 770.

I was thinking about maybe buying a 1070 and a new CPU?

Would I see a noticeable difference if I would get a newer CPU on LGA1150 or is it actually worth it to buy a new board to get a 6600 CPU? I would also have to buy DDR4 at that point so that kinda sucks.

Basically what would be a good worthy upgrades I could do on my PC?

Thanks

A 6600K would be a very small upgrade and you would also need a z170 motherboard and DDR4 RAM. Not worth it in my opinion. Just get a 1070 in about a month or so. (or the 1080 if you can afford it/need it)

Would the bump from a 1070 to a 1080 be worth it considering the rest of my specs and the fact that I play on a 1080p screen? I assume that a 1070 would be plenty?

We'll have to wait for 1070 benchmarks. But it'll probably be close to 980 Ti performance, which is perfectly fine for 1080.

If you only play on 1080p nope, not worth paying 220$ more IMO. The 1070 will be more than enough. (unless you have a 144hz monitor and need that ~30% more performance but still)

Nope I don't.... Good old 1080p60 monitor.

All right, thanks for the help guys.

Sucks so much right now to have to play DOOM on medium with the Res scaling down to 90% to get a somewhat stable 60fps....bleh

Guys I'm using a z97 deluxe motherboard and have a 4770k cpu. I will be getting the 1080 when it drops. Do you think it's worth it to upgrade my motherboard at all?

Are you using a guide?

No, no point.

I'm checking videos and whatever I can find in google, but I'm still a bit concerned about the heating and power consume aspects. I only have a stock CPU fan so I've been planning on buying a new one (maybe water cooler given that were I live it gets pretty hoy in summer). Also I've a 650w psu, it's a Corsair bronze certified, would that sufice or should I get something bigger? again, any help or comments are appreciated

Any tips before I overclock my i5 3570k? First time overclocking and I would appreciate any help.

Use cpu-z to monitor cpu speed and voltage
Use realtemp to monitor cpu temps
Use prime 95 to stress test.

First set all of your settings manually in the bios with nothing on auto (or as few as possible). This will allow to you keep track of what changes and what doesn't.
Bump up your cpu speed by 200-300 mhz and run prime95 for 15 minutes to see if it crashes. If not, keep raising the cpu speed by 100 mhz until it does crash.
Increase your cpu voltage 2 notches and try again.
Repeat the process while keeping temps below what you are comfortable with (75C or 80C).
Once you get it to where you want it to be, let the stress test run for a longer period of time. Some people say 8 hours, some say just a few hours, I always run 24 hours but I wanna really be stable :)

edit: Just saw where you're using the stock heatsink. I would wait and get an aftermarket cooler before overclocking.

What cooler would you recommend for around 60-80 dollars? Does my PSU provide enough power?

I have an NZXT closed looper liquid cooler for the CPU with 2 fans on it. Do I plug those into the motherboard, or into the PWM fan hub that comes with my case?

Hyper 212's a budget-conscious giant block for a heatsink and is the default go-to for overclockers.

I've only used it, a Pallas low-profile cooler and a Titan something-or-other, but the 212 was the best of those.

Hey guys, does anyone have keyboard recommendations? I have never used a mechanical keyboard so I am not sure if its worth upgrading to one (or what type I would want/like if so)? I use my PC for work and gaming, so it gets some significant use. I prefer wired.

Yes, mechanical keyboards are superior if you are willing to spend the money. I have a Corsair K70 RGB with Cherry MX Brown switches and I love it.

If you can find a place where you can try different switches, that is a great way to see what your preference is.

Are ASRock motherboards considered reliable? It's been awhile since I did my last build and am not familiar with the brand?

Trying to pick a Z170 mATX board but not finding many that are well reviewed from the usual suspects like Asus & Gigabyte.

I had big problems with voltage being misreported with an Asrock board. But that was 3 years ago with a Z77 board, so I guess I should stop casting aspersions on them by now. My beef wasn't just that there was a problem...but that they admitted it but never fixed it. I am now an ASUS fanboy and every board I have used from them has been excellent.

So I'm thinking about upgrading my PC and I could use some advice.

I would say just go GPU.

If you don't upgrade that other stuff, a 1080 might not be a bad buy. You will be ready to move on to a high refresh monitor or a higher resolution when the time comes. Yes, it would be a bit much for a 1080p 60hz display...

Probably a bit of a silly question, but my PC is quite old so it can't connect to 5GHz wifi networks, and since I got a 5GHz router as a gift I kinda wanna fix that. What's the best way to remedy that? Can I buy an external adapter or should I replace some old internal part?

Can you good fellas recommend me a decent z170 board which is overclock friendly for £160/$200 mark please.....

I'm a bad fella, but I'll answer anyway.

z170 Boards in the 150-200 price segment are all fine. Just get something that suits your needs (onboard soundcard, Wi Fi or not, number of ports etc) from MSI, Asus or Gigabyte. But ASrock also seems to be okay... this time around.

I'm using the asus z170-A. It's nothing too special but it's a good board (if you don't need on board Wi Fi) for a reasonable price. My 6700k is running at 4.5ghz atm on this board. But I'm pretty sure I could go higher.

You can either buy an internal wi fi card or an usb wlan adapter. Both aren't too expansive (~30€).

Got some DDR3 ram to boost my 4670k I5 rig up by 16gb. It was pretty cheap so felt it was a good idea, especially if I get a good graphics card in the coming months. If I clock my CPU to the limit, will it last me a while longer? Or will a DDR 4 build be coming sooner than I think?

Not an easy decision. Depends mostly on the GPU you want to get.

I think if you have at least a 2600k, 3570k or 3770k and are able to overclock, there is no reason to be buying a new CPU/Mobo/RAM if planning to pair with a 1070/1080.

I think 2500k with massive overclock may still be ok but it's really at the limit now.

And I really think people with 2500k and 3570k CPUs who want to buy a 1070 or 1080 should start to upgrade. Even if their CPU is overclocked to 4.4 ghz, but granted it could be a bit different for the i7 equivalents.
I upgraded my 3570k (4.3ghz) and I noticed a huge boost in performance and I'm only on a gtx 980. But in the end it's a personal choice and people want to hear that their old stuff is still doing great.

I replaced my 2500k this year with a 6700k, it was definitely time. I might have held on a little longer if I had a 2600k.

But I was able to resell my 2500k, mobo and ram for half of what I paid for them 5 years ago. Crazy! Definitely one of the best PC purchases I've ever made.

Yeah, I was able to sell both my i5 2500K and i7 2600K, and a 1155 socket MBO, for a very good price. I didn't even ask much, I just let people bid. I guess since that era of hardware stuck around so long and was so popular, there's a lot of people looking to upgrade into that space, particularly if they already own the MBO and want a CPU that's unlocked.

The 1080 is really efficient. You'll be fine, assuming that's a decent PSU (I haven't looked up anything about it, but it probably is).

Is there any internet speed difference between going with an internal or an usb adapter? I ask because my hand is mildly injured right now so I'd rather avoid doing anything that involved opening up my pc for the next month or so, but if the internal one is a better solution I can live with that.

Tricky question as we still have no 1070 benchmarks. It might work, but you'll most probably need something around 500W to be able to achieve the boost clock speed in gpu heavy situations. But I'd stick to your 450W PSU (seems to be a good one) and just test it.

USB ports have a slower transfer speed compared to a hardware directly plugged onto the motherboard, also usb wifi antennas are worse. But if your PC isn't too far away from your router and if you don't buy the cheapest 8€ usb wifi adapter out there the differences shouldn't be big enough to make a difference for you.

If i manage to keep my 2600k@4.5hz+ 1080 GTX for 1440p gaming until the release of Cannonlake it would be insane. In one hand it's good for the wallet compared to the times where every year the gap between processor was big but well on the other hand it seems that the end of the road is near.

Any idea how much improvement Kaby lake will be for gaming versus skylake?

I've seen people say "5% at the very very best" in terms of performance. So i would not hold my breath except if you are still rocking an old CPU maybe you can wait a little more till the release of Kaby.

So any of you have any idea if the AMD Summit Ridge is going to compete with skylake/kaby ?

I don't see it being a problem. I had my 3770 at 4.2ghz, went to 6700 4.5ghz, my 3dmark scores were identical on the graphics and combined tests. Your 2600k at 4.5ghz should match/beat my 3770 at 4.2ghz. This was with a GTX 970 pushing an overclock that will beat factory oc'd 980s.

Ahh , I remember the years of me upgrading annually. Long may they be resigned to history!

With the 6700k in and not overclocked yet, I'm good on that score for another 4 years I think. My history is a Q6600, a 2500k and now a 6700k.

The only reason I might be tempted to ditch my 980ti after only 18 months would be if I go down the 4k route and fat Pascal with HBM is worthwhile for me.

I was considering getting a second 980ti when the firesales start as people upgrade for 1080s, but since I'd need a card, block and a new PSU (still ricking a Corsair HX520 from about a decade ago!), its a £500 spend that just isn't worth it for me.

I am thinking of jumping in PC gaming by building a new computer around the upcoming GTX1080. Parts I would like to keep from my current pc are:

Case: Bitfenix Prodigy (Micro Atx)
PSU: I have to check if its a 500 or 750 watts
HDDs: 1x256SSD, 1TB SATA

Which parts do you recommend I buy, keeping in mind that all fits inside the Prodigy, and there won't be any heat dissipation issues - thanks!

Cross post from mech keyboard thread

Please can someone help me find a mechanical keyboard from the UK that's wireless? I need about 8ft range.

I've seen this filco Majestouch MINILA Air 67, but I don't know where to buy it from :S

Also how heavy are these compared to your standard el cheapo keyboards? I plan to use it on my lap.

I've found this Varmilio VB87M:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272150622658 for £98

Yikes, 20k crept up before the 1080/1070 release. At least there is finally some excitement for new parts.
I really don't want to put up a new thread without updated builds, but have serious work deadlines this week so it has to wait until the weekend.

If anyone has input (already have a few notes down) please go ahead and PM/post in the next couple days.
