When will western devs realize that femininity sells?

Are we ever going to see femininity back in western games?

I live in Osaka now after living 10 years in Tokyo and yes there are attractive, slim, beautiful women. The thing with Japanese women is, you never know what is under the hood (makeup). Sometimes when I see idols without makeup, I am starting to think that today anyone can become an idol with the right makeup. Many of these idols cannot even really sing.
100%, makeup is getting scarily good.

"The argument had been going on for about half an hour before I finally pulled one of the framed Ratchet and Clank posters down from the wall, put it in front of both leads, and told them to look at the damn thing and tell me how much Ratchet looked like a human man.

The argument largely petered out after that point, with all parties leaving incredibly frustrated, and myself leaving the company a few weeks later.

So.

Fellow men in gamedev.

This is an example of one of the VERY SMALL THINGS that build up over time to make life miserable for women and marginalized people in our industry.

Something as simple as putting titties on a space rat can harm people.

It breaks people's trust when you allow things like this to happen unchallenged. If you don't push back against tiny little things, like giving Rivet tits, you're essentially saying those things don't matter."

To people that dislike current western trends, what would be an ideal looking video game protagonist in the next woman-fronted video game?

Just keep your conceptual image suggestions SFW, especially the porn stars.

Well it's not just men who prefer more feminine characters, girls like feminine looking characters too.
You dont see too many TV or movie fans say they want to watch ugly fat dudes or frumpy women. They sure love kick ass characters, slick fit guys and dolled up actresses who have perfect hair and make up in tornado scenes.

But turn to gaming, and you got a weird trend of gamers and studio employees dumbing down characters into the most sexless looks and personality ever.

Well, nobody ever said Hollywood and video games were the same breed..... even though video game workers think their games belong in Hollywood. lol

My take away from that tall story is why have Rivet at all then. Ratchet isn't a male as such, no need to shoe horn a female version in there. Cancel the character, meeting finished. Oh and none of that happened, just an attention seeker on Twitter.

I also don't buy the story. I kinda doubt they would have floated a design with any more that a little bump suggesting breasts. I could see this guy complaining about one of the concepts for a month on slack and spinning this yarn after leaving.

and keep in mind it's not just one person but nearly the entire site sharing this sentiment.
Open your eyes. It’s not just this site, it’s the entire world, pop culture, fashion and beauty industry.

Out in the real world women want to have an hourglass figure and likes to fix their hair and use makeup to highlight their facial beauty and spend lots of money on clothes that makes them beautiful. Etc.

And out in the real world young women literally go to the gym to build a booty now, then gladly show their progress on Instagram by posing in weird body twisting poses that highlight their curves.

This is the western world outside of gaming.

What some western gaming devs are doing is trying to go against all this. Could be because they don’t want to piss off angry groups of people on the internet who don’t like this focus on beauty and specific body traits. Or it could be because they just don’t like those beauty trends themselves. Nobody knows because you can’t ask this and expect a honest answer.

I’ve seen a couple body trends come and go during my life time. More will come no doubt. Right now we’re clearly in the booty era, I’d say it started with J.Lo and went into overdrive with the Kardashians. It’s kinda morphing into hourglass forms I think, a classic from the past. Back in the 80s to probably 2000 we were in the busty era, through Page 3 models and Pamela Anderson. Maybe the next one is slim and curveless, we’ll see. Gaming won’t drive this change no matter what some angry Twitter mobs are thinking.

It would be nice to have drop dead gorgeous girls in games again instead of creatures that took their face to a hydraulic press or look like a refrigerator.

Ugly just isn't attractive. Sorry.

But it's not just the appearance that matters it's about the character's personality too and if it's shallow or too much focus on a single trait a person has then it isn't very attractive as an entity.

I think the world at large knows what human female beauty looks like. It's just that a ugly subset of people are unwilling to put in the work or are unable to attain that level of beauty themselves that they become resentful and full of envy and want to tear these people down. But it really comes down to self-loathing and insecurity with oneself. That self-destructive behavior isn't good for anyone.

At least Nintendo has me covered in the cute girl department. >:Y

Inflation, war and poverty will do the trick. Trust me. Give it a couple years. When they're forced to get their priorities straight by the circumstances, they'll make what people want or go bankrupt.
Right now devs can’t have a curvy main character because they know certain Twitter personas will attack them and hurt their PR.
Only way to do it is by using side characters, minority groups.
Insomniac knows what’s up, they’re in full control playing their instrument masterfully to this new tune 😏

I dont understand well the point of the argument in the topic, but The videogames are full of clichés.

I dont see a problem with that. People everywhere looks For guys/girls/roles that inspire them.

They are free to Buy/Chose whatever looking The Main character is.

Kratos in GoW 2018, to be honest i think it was sexualizated. I saw a lot of Twitter comments about how sexy he looked. Was it wrong on the developers For chosing that look?

Lara Croft Reboot is The female example of a normal looking girl that inspires. However she has been sexualizated.

To me, whats wrong is to force people into a world The way they selfishly want.

The Last of Us series was ruined For this point of view. It was just not necesary to impose this narrative.

Now, i would be Open for a diverse way of look this topic, but give each kind of player what they want.

I don't understand. The Witcher has plenty of them; there's A Plague Tale, Horizon, Mirror's Edge, Praey for the Gods, Kena, Tomb Raider, Life is Strange True Colors, Deathloop (antagonist), Dishornored 2, Hellblade, Assassin's Creed, Uncharted, Wolfenstein Young Blood, Far Cry series, Syberia, Cyberpunk, Dragon Age etc etc

and countless other games with good looking female NPCs or character creation

Just because a game isn't riddled with perfect looking anime faces on every corner like in JRPGs doesn't mean there's no more in Western games.

I don't know how many dead horses OP has to beat with a stick to realize there are 100s of threads that moan about this regularly.

I have never bought a game because of sexualized pixels. I do not get off on virtual characters, and I never have. I have certainly avoided buying games because I would be too embarrassed to own them based on character design, and I've given others passes and looked past it.

People didn't get attached to Aeris because of her 20 polygons in the 90s; they got attached to her personality, tragedy, and her music.

It's all about balance, my friends. :messenger_relieved:

No gamer, whether they be male or female (or one of them dear inbetweeners!), should feel physically lacking when compared to them dirty sexy pixels!

It's only a matter of time before all male game heroes look like this! :messenger_heart:✨

I think the bigger issue is if it's forcing an agenda or not. Different artists have different styles. Just like music, it's all about getting the aesthetic and tone for what the project is trying to convey.

The lack of good looking women never stopped me from buying a game, some of my goty had mediocre looking women as protagonists even, but i would lie saying that i don't prefer to look a beatiful protagonist with a good ass compared to something ugly, it's the human nature, nobody goes to the movie theater to see an action movie where the girl is a landwhale.

I think you care too much about sexy women and too little about enjoying your games for other purposes.

Rest easy. Women still exist in games. Not all of them are going to have the same body type, so learn to move past this need to make all of them look the way you want.
Can’t enjoy a game when the woman is ugly as fuck . She is in my face all the time during the gameplay . How the fuck am I supposed to play ? Did u see the dude in Control ? Shit was disturbing I couldn’t play the game.

Anyone who says who cares in this thread is either fugly or blind to not see this ugly trend happening in the west.

I am liking the fact they for the most part fail in terms of sales . They either act right and fire these poisonous people in their team or bankruptcy. Either way I am happy.
