Valve wants Game Pass on Steam

dude, maybe if they took your money and used it for dedicated servers, but you pay to host your own games on machines with low end cpus and bad internet

Xbox live always sucked, maybe they do dedicated next gen servers now, but I doubt it.
uhhh what? But plenty games have dedicated servers?

It would be great.
I'm currently subscribed to Game Pass, testing my first 1$ month, and... it's really not perfect.
It's cool to have access to many games like this, but a lot of the games are in different / inferior versions than the "normal" versions on Steam / Gog etc.

We tried Wolfenstein Youngblood with a friend to try it in Coop, and the game doesn't offer any fullscreen option, it's only windowed / borderless, I was scared when I saw this in the options, and I was right, it's a stuttery mess that feels like 35 fps even when you can hold a steady 60, and there was nothing I could do to try improving it since the game pass games are UWP apps that are completely locked.

Another thing, more personal this time, but I also tried We Happy Few, for about 2 hours, and I liked it so much that I felt bad playing it on Game Pass and not Steam, because when I like a game, I prefer having my stats and all on Steam, so in the end I ended up buying it on Steam...
My experience with Game Pass was more like, broken version of games, or testing games and see if I want to buy them lol

Sounds like no matter what, you're a PC gamer at heart and have a strong preference for Steam stats. If you're forcing yourself to buy the Steam version even though the GP version you played is good, not sure what else MS can do for you to stick with the service.

Of course they want it Microsoft would lose a shit ton of money and valve makes a shit ton of money. The 30% cut makes it unfeasible unless pc gamers want to pay ultimate prices to line lord gabens pockets.

And you've hit the jackpot with that. I think that is the main purpose of GamePass: try the game and if you like it, you can buy it with a discount. If you don't like the game, you don't buy it.

The main benefit of that model is that you don't rely on forums like these, nor the specialist press, but your own taste and criteria to choose which games to buy. Why would you blindly buy a US$60 game when you can try it first and then decide if you want to keep it?

After the horrible experience that was gamepass on the windows store, this seems like the obvious answer. Getting it on steam could really turn the tides for many PC gamers. But they'd have to work out a pretty sweet deal. All the costs gamepass has plus 30% from steam just wouldn't work.
theres nothing wrong with the microsoft store, or the gamepass app. 99% of the people who have problems fuck around with windows update, or try to apply registry tweaks to disable telemetry, change folder permissions or some other unsactioned tweaks that break the os. of course nobody will ever admit it.
the microsoft store and gamepass are just frontends to download from windows update. if you're successfully taking windows updates, then you are successfully downloading games.

Everything is set up for this. Even all of EA's games are on Steam as well now (and EA offer their sub there).

Hope they can find an agreement for this to happen.

I haven't done absolutely anything to windows or the registry or whatever else, but the store and its games are still broken for me half of the time to the point I stopped using it. I guess I'm probably just not admitting my hax?

Well, that's the topic of this thread, game pass being on steam could be that something they could do, if that's even possible.

But also like I said, a lot of games aren't identical to their regular versions, We Happy Few ran worse on the game pass version than the Steam version, it also had an issue where it was constantly showing the controller icons instead of keyboard and mouse and I had to complete disconnect the controller to have the keyboard and mouse UI, while I don't need to do that on the steam version, it switches in real time. It's often little difference like this, or performance issues, or multiplayer not being crossplay with steam and therefore being quite dead etc... The experience isn't optimal in its current state for various reasons.

I would love for this to happen, but it would be half-assed and still require for you to have the MS app and the EA Desktop app all opened.

Microsoft would love to acquire Steam, to dominate PC market.

However, Gamepass on Steam is also interesting idea.

"Dude", I don't even subscribe Gamepass. It doesn't change that you are speaking nonsense.
The games on Gamepass are directly downloaded on your hardware, not played remotely.

Gamepass through Steam could be interesting, especially if all games are still distributed through Steam and have their own pages and everything. You'd have far more people's eyes on different games, more people to leave user reviews, more people to create content and populate servers, etc, all at greater convenience to the users compared to the usual Gamepass process.

You would still have Microsoft titles needing to be installed via windows store Unless all their titles are all 100% in steam database. If that's the case then it's possible to do, but the question would MS want to?

Yeah they do that over 100 million players userbase right there.
I think it has more to do with them wanting to move gamers to UWP than they wanting to do business with gaming at all... one of the things preventing their UWP domination is gaming and XGP gives them an oportunity there to make people migrate

Gaben doesn't care, he will sell Steam to MS in the near future!
I suspect there may be more truth to this than people think. It's a very good fit and MS would open the purse wide. I don't agree about it being soon though, but I think this is going to happen eventually. I could see regulators looking very hard at this as quite a few companies would definitely oppose this.

Gaben is ex Microsoft and he is not getting any younger.

I don't know if this is true, but he offered the concept of the online store to MS prior to releasing Steam... So it would be logical in some way.

Obviously, if this was to go forward it wouldn't please everyone, but it seems logical, at the very least some deep connection will happen if they go through with the GamePass thing.

Cool if both parties are happy with it. Not a PC gamer, but I know the Windows store is kind of shit. Should bring a lot of fresh blood into the program.

Makes no sense to me to add Game Pass to Steam when Valve could just roll their own Game Pass style sub service since it has the better catalogue...

It‘s like people saying Game Pass should be on PSN, which makes no sense cause Sony can just do their own sub service (which they have with PS Now).

Also the 30% talk... you know, Valve can give you special deals on that and lower the cut they take...
