Finally I could get the game!

I saw a lot of reviewers saying how SOR4 is a traditional as it gets, a blast from the past but this is not entirely true for people who didn't stop playing beat em ups since the Mega Drive/ Snes days. It is the same genre, sure, but a lot of new also.

There are so many smart decisions in gameplay! The specials risk-reward mechanic, toss-grab weapons, a lot of variety in the stages, huge diferences between the characters and how the score system entangles with combos and health itens.

One character I didn't expected to like so much is Floyd. I usually don't like to play with grabbers but he is very fun to play with. Love to use his Snes Batman-like double grab.

I'm glad they are buffing Axel. Since he is my favorite in the series, I decided to play as him for my first run. Playing with the others on hard is easier than playing Axel on normal! The dude is a difficulty level in itself!

The speed increase is a must. When I was fighting against Max and noticed Axel was slower than him I felt bad.

Floyd’s a lot of fun. Him and Adam have been my two most-used characters, though I got a nice rank boost on Skytrain by switching to Blaze…

Yeah, Adam and Floyd are the best characters in my opinion also. I like Cherry speed but she tosses the enemies too near her for my taste, it messes with the way I play. It is awesome there is this difference between the characters though! I need to play with her more to see if I can play her game.

Not even the mayor of Metro City convinced me to play as a grabber in brawlers, but I'm finding Floyd very fun. What I don't like about grab based characters is how slow they are, I don't like to stop punching to slowly walk until I can fight another character. But Floyd has a solution for this! We can pick enemies far away with his special, if we accept the potential cost in health! Awesome risk-reward.

His two grab is awesome also. The player needs to think if it is worth trying to maximize the damage picking two enemies or if it is best to hurt the enemy you already grabbed. Sometimes one birth in the hand worth two in the bush.

Great game!

Floyd's air special is huge also. It costs life so there's some risk, but you can jump kick, then air special, then jump kick and fly across almost the whole screen when you really need to move.

Been absolutely addicted to this game the past week. BK2 is still my favorite but aside from a few minor quirks I very much enjoy this. So sucked in I went and played through original 3 games again for like the billionth time.
Never seem to get tired of these ^ - ^
Yeah I can play the originals time and again and not get bored. I’m still having a blast. Blaze is my girl, I just seem to get in better with her move set even though Floyd feels easier.

I was interested to see how 2 holds up after enjoying 4 so much, and I was happy to find that I enjoy it just as much as before. I played as Blaze too, and do admit that I try to bounce enemies and do combos before realising "oh yeah, this isn't 4", but I liked the more leisurely pace of 2.

I feel compelled to update my character assessment.

I’ve been trying to get A-rank in every stage on Normal difficulty. I’m about half A, half B right now. Adam and Floyd are indeed top characters, but increasingly I’m relying on Blaze for two specific reasons: her completely free OTG and the hit box of her defensive special.

Let me talk about that OTG for a second. Blaze’s double-forward attack sends her into a somersault that can hit knocked down enemies off the ground (OTG) so you can keep a combo going even after a knockdown.

Blaze is not the only character with an OTG (and more OTGs are coming in the patch); but AFAIK she’s the only one with a free OTG that requires no health bar burn. This is insane: you can OTG for days to keep combos going and finish off enemies more quickly, with no life bar spend. The more I play the game the more this seems crazy to me. However, the devs have made no noise about removing it.

Her defensive special is also great because it his above as well as on both sides.

Every time this thread is bumped without the post "The patch is released" I leave disappointed.

I'm glad that people still want to talk ahout the game, though.

I'm having a shitload of fun with it in its current state. A patch will be nice but why not just enjoy it in the meantime? And each post might be another person finding out how awesome this game is. Also, this thread has given me tons of useful pointers in how to deal with different enemies so it's all good. In other news, I still absolutely fucking adore this game. Game of 2020 for me.

Don't get me wrong, the game is good. But I hit the game hard on release, did 40+ hours, and now I've done everything I want to do in its current form. Looking forward to buffed Axel and what seems to be a drastically different play style for Cherry.

Thanks MasterDerico MasterDerico , looking forward to it!

Glad you enjoyed it - honestly this is a game that just puts a big smile on my face. SOR4 and Mario Odyssey have basically been my therapy for the last couple of months of lockdown boredom. Both utterly brilliant games in their own ways, both old-school pure gameplay-focused proper games. Games make life suck less.

Gameplay is king, which is why I was so happy to enjoy SoR4. You can tell it's a worth entry to the series when, like Kazza Kazza , I went back to old games and tried combing the way you do in 4. It's such a natural progression for the series. Forget my mild impatience for a patch, if there's no DLC or SoR5 I'll be genuinely disappointed because I want more. I'd also like to see them tackle another retro series like Golden Axe.

Oh I'd absolutely love some more SOR - DLC or sequel is fine, it's a day-one purchase either way. Re Golden Axe - I had it on the Atari ST so maybe that didn't help but it seemed a decent port, but with the compromise to using one fire button it seemed rather that the game played itself in that the character picked the move to perform at the time you pressed the button (the only player agency was being able to push the joystick up while pressing fire to jump) - I've not played the console versions so maybe that's not such an issue in those games? It just seemed to me that it had a lower skill level, though I did enjoy the visuals and the setting.

I only played the original on Mega Drive (aside from a small try at sequels in the Sega collection on PS3), and you're largely right but that's why I think they could do the series some justice. Give the player more options with modern controllers like being able to choose the magic casting level (the original cast as high as possible) and let people choose their combos. There's room for some fun stuff to be done there.

Aside from the character videos is there a list somewhere of what they will be looking to add in the upcoming patch?
I think that's likely to come a lot closer to when the patch comes out. If they're still a month off then there's probably a fair amount that isn't set in stone yet.

I really tried to like SOR4 but Streets of Rage Remake v5 is better in many different ways.
The damage and hitbox in remake is far more satisfying as a starting and main example.

I have to disagree, sorr don't even play like the originals, and the community is toxic.

The remake is decent enough, and when we had nothing else it did a useful job, but now we have Streets Of Rage 4 which imo did a fantastic job of bringing the series forward, and hopefully provided the devs with a platform to push the genre forward.

Going back to this game is much harder than the first 3 for me. I find there's a rhythm and you need to be "with it" to do well, where as I can take years away from the first 3 and come back and play them OK this one I can take a couple weeks off and need to step down to easy/normal from mania difficulty.

My brother is experiencing the same, anyone else?

Not really a critique of the game though, it meaningfully moved the IP into 2020 -- the original three games are there for those who want to play them, not to say some of the many critiques in this thread (some of them my own) aren't valid.
