Episode 1

Not bad. The animation's really good, but that's expected with BONES. I'm surprised how traditionally paced the first episode was though, given that this is only 13 episodes. Doesn't feel like much happened at all. It's kinda funny that in the last year or so there's been a number of anime taking advantage of the superhero boom. One Punch Man, Concrete Revolutio, My Hero Academia... I wonder if there'll just be more and more of this over the years now.

It's not surprising it didn't feel like much happened because this didn't even finish chapter 1

The Opening song is kind of terrible and I dont understand their need to dim it, there werent any explosions or anything I would think would give people an epileptic attack.

Anyway the most important thing was best characters in the OP! I thought Kaminari wouldnt make it since hes avoided in all the pre anime publicity but there he is in all his glory. I can't wait for his formal introduction.

Bakugou was probably my favorite character in the whole episode, I love his ultra confident personality and at least he talks to Midoriya and plays around with him as kids and still in the present day. His classroom line was harsh yet memorable and sadly kind of the only think Midoriya could really do to change his circumstances unless the power of science would do something about it.

It was everything I ever dreamed.

However, I'm actually surprised at how little it covered. I would have thought they would have tried to make it a bit farther with only a 13 episode series, but I guess I really will have to wait a fucking year for the
Sports Festival and on.

Right, I forgot to mention that earlier, but one other little thing I found pretty neat was how they focused on his feet the 2 times it was about being quirkless, or humans being born not equal.
One was in the manga too, but that really felt a bit weird and out of place, I think combining it with the voice overs made it a lot more interesting.

I think it's safe to say it's not going to end with just 13 episodes, it's just a question of when not if.
With that in mind them being able to cover so 'little' in one episode while still having perfect pacing makes me actually more excited. I think the manga is great, but it suffers from being too fast-paced more times then not. If Bones will be able to give scenes and events the breathing room they deserve it's going to really bring out the best of the source material, and so far that looks to be the case.

Dang I expected them to cover a little more in this episode but seeing it all animated finally is surreal. I hope Bones can sustain the great animation throughout, they are doing a good job so far.

I'm sure the pace will pick up now.

It's not perfect. It's overly messy at times on almost all fronts however there is an energy to the work that makes it very exciting and easy to overlook those flaws. A mini example would be the song during the OP at the point where it shows Baku and Deku together in that the guitars overwhelm the vocals to the point where the main melody becomes messy. Other cases would be elements like when Deku found out he's quirkless in that instead of just letting the VAs do their thing, the background music is blaring a bit too much. However there is a chaotic aspect to the show that makes it dynamic such as the homeroom scene with everybody using their powers and Baku going berserk destroying things. It's emulating comic books through and through, which I enjoy.
This isn't the best looking show I will see this year but it is a lot of fun, largely due to the direction and character animation. There is a comic book feel throughout the episode through things like the introduction panels, the setting, and the character animation. Horikoshi's style can be felt throughout the episode through the sketchy and thick line art and really is the visual oomph that this show is missing on all other fronts. As you can tell, I'm not impressed with the art direction as a whole as the background work is mediocre at best. As for the audio, I'm not overly impressed with Hayashi so far but there are still some good tracks in here. On the VA side, Nobuhiko Okamoto was the stand out so far as he nailed how much of a shit Baku is. Very much reminiscent of his Accelerator days.
As for the OP and ED, I love the OP and somewhat dislike the ED. The ED on the visual side is just Deku running and that's mostly it. It's extremely boring. The music itself is also somewhat forgettable. BONES is usually better than that on the theme side. The OP is significantly better. I really liked the character intros where they used one frame and then two frames for parts of the title. Very snappy stuff. The OP is just well edited with many mini quick cuts tied to the drum beats such as Deku's notebook count. The All Might punch barrage scene was fucking fantastic and gives me a lot of hope for later action sequences. I've long been in a fan of Porno Graffiti, since the OG FMA days, so I liked the song a lot.

Just finished the first episode. After spending the previous weekend reading the entire manga up to where it's at now, I was so hyped for this. Such a good first episode.

Glad that they did not try to fit chapter 1 in a single episode. Not only is it like 54 pages but it's dense as hell as well. The pace should pick up soon one everything is established.

Thanks GAF for hyping this up, it's been a long time since I picked an anime series to watch.

Can't wait for episode 2 :)

Man, I only read a bit of the manga, but seeing it animated reminded me of what a giant fucking dickbag Katsuki is in this series.

He gets kinda better. Sorta.

It was great. It's obvious now how BONES will pace the show and that's fine. While the manga moves along quickly, there's a lot of details throughout that give a lot of information so it doesn't feel bloated with unneeded chapters like other manga. So the fact the show is fleshing out those details more gives a great contrast with the manga.

I won't say it was an amazing first episode, but I'm intrigued by what's to come. Right now I'm most curious about this guy.

I can see myself using this gif a lot for prehype on gamingside, and the one where he discovers he's a normal for the disapointment afterwards.

My Hero Academia 1

Had to temper myself a bit going into this, knowing that not everything I like about MHA is going to happen in the span of twenty-two minutes. On the contrary, it's getting at things at a rate a bit slower than I expected, and just shy of where I began to see MHA move itself away from the pack. Probably a bad habit to get caught up on the rate that they're adapting, though, especially when there's really nothing especially glaring about how this episode was paced.

Still couldn't help but think a couple scenes could have stood to be cut down, or at least kind of demonstrated how different the pacing can feel when panels of a manga are more or less directly reinterpreted to animation as was more or less the case for the flashback.
Deku rewatching the video after being told he's Quirkless
stands out as something that feels like a half-minute too long, and a little too tinged with melodrama. Though the latter point is something you could hand to the source material as well.

But I think it gets the most important thing right, and that's that the show's admiration for superheroism, and its' enthusiasm to share that really shines through. It's easy to see what Midoriya finds so inspiring about heroes, and it gives everything about the show's energy (of which it has tons) a really infectious quality. While I think the flashback did ultimately drag a bit, kid Midoriya bouncing around over All Might struck a chord in me as just something so quintessentially what heroes are about. Not many series in my experience really capture how the idea can direcly inspire people within its' own fiction. It's something MHA just feels really good at.

Excited for what's to come, and what's here is executed with aplomb.

Interesting to see that Hayashi is composing for both this and Kiznaiver this season. Hope this is a sign to come that Sawano's out of fashion now. Could stand to trade up. :v

I haven't read any of the manga but that first episode sure showed promise, I'm definitely curious to see where it goes

I haven't been watching much anime lately, but I heard so many good things about this series that I decided to give it a chance. What a great first episode that was. The concept is simple but very cool, the protagonist is instantly likeable, the soundtrack gets you pumped, the animation is impressive... In for the whole season!

I find it odd that this a 13 epiosde anime but the first episode only coverd half a chapter, I do think it's good idea give the material time to breath insteading blowing through it like how I was expecting, It could of coverd a bit more.

+character designs are spot on
+voice actor so far are decent choices

-not sure why but the contrast drops in the opening when the good animation starts but goes back up when the scene ends, ruins the op.

-Music in the episode was kinda boring

The episode was good adaption of the material it coverd but it had me half bored due the music and the direction on the emotional scenes being not so interesting.

Most anime tend to have a weak start same for most shounen the start was half boring but I expect it come into it's own in a few episodes.
