Halo Infinite Graphics Criticism Addressed by Dev; Game Features a New Acoustic Engine Leveraging XSX

Halo Infinite didn't exactly impress most fans with its gameplay showcase released this week, starting with the graphics, which many felt it wasn't 'next-gen enough'.

We had the chance to participate in a press Q&A yesterday, though, and 343 Industries Studio Head Chris Lee didn't shy away from addressing the hot topic. Lee also discussed the improvements made to the audio engine for Halo Infinite, which leverages the capabilities of the Xbox Series X hardware to provide a more immersive experience for the player.

Chris Lee: I think for the response on the graphics, the thing I hope is that folks get a chance to check out our 4K streaming assets, I think that really lets our game show itself in full fidelity. We are definitely still very much in development, we have some polishing and tuning that the team is working on to really bring the full potential of our experience to our fans later this year in Halo Infinite. We definitely are excited about the ambition of the title, of this open expansive campaign and we'll make sure that it's polished and ready to go when fans get their hands on it this Holiday.

The gameplay demo is a great example of how we're running on Xbox Series X, you'll be able to run at a solid 60 frames per second at up to 4K resolution. We're bringing the highest fidelity experience that we've ever created. We're able to do more than 10 times the processing power per pixel that we were able to do in Halo 5, which just allows us to create this experience that's unlike anything that we've had in Halo before. In Halo Infinite we've really harnessed a lot of advanced rendering techniques, but also the immense power of the Xbox Series X.

Music is also incredibly important to Halo and to our fans, and I'm really excited that after Curtis Schweitzer, a composer that we talked about last year at E3, we got to announce our second composer that's joining Curtis, Gareth Coker. Both Gareth and Curtis have been doing an incredible job and throughout the demo today you've been able to experience some of the music that Gareth has worked on. We also upgraded our audio engine to create a new acoustic system and leverage a lot of extra processing power and streaming power with the Xbox Series X to be able to really surround the player in a much more realistic audio experience.

https://wccftech.com/halo-infinite-...eatures-a-new-acoustic-engine-leveraging-xsx/

-------------------------------------
There you have it folks. Chris Lee said don't worry about the graphics, what you saw is basically how Series X runs, but upto 4K 60fps. So perhaps not native 4K all the time, dynamic rez seems to be confirmed. Don't worry about graphics, but we've got this improved sound though....People forget most of the games shown was on PC, so when Leadbetter said that he did pixel counts and all the games from MS conference runs at native 4K, people have to remember we don't exactly know the resolutions of the actual console box yet....Chris Lee has now clued us on the general rez of Series X in this title...
It's using dynamic resolution as well?

You start to notice a pattern after a while.
So what was the reason so many other companies turn to shit, back when it was all just white dudes working for them? This has nothing to do with any perceived decline by Bioware and 343i. This is just narrow-minded stupidity. The 2 best product managers/designers at our company are a Pakistani man and woman. If you aren't privy to the actual HR process at these companies, don't bother talking out of your ass. Talent isn't colored or gendered. With almost 8 billion people on the planet, there will be no shortage of talented female coders available to pick from.

Everyone says Halo Infinite looks like it plays like classic Halo. The graphics can probably be pegged on a combination of cross-compatibility and inadequate dev kits. There were very few XSX games that were displayed in anything resembling realtime graphics, which suggests that 343i is probably further along in development than all the other teams, if they actually have something playable. That's the real issue IMO.

Near the end of last week I said there's no way they delay this game. I'm less sure all of a sudden thanks to the highlighted part above. I see he followed it with references to polishing and tuning. Do devs consider polishing and tuning as still very much in development? I don't know, really I don't. I just assumed by this juncture development would be essentially over with just polishing and tuning left. Short of a very late Series X launch, this game should be on shelves in under 4 months from today. Possibly closer to 3 depending on when Series X actually launches.

You start to notice a pattern after a while.

They have 450 employees, and just got the women together for a womens day post. That's, what, 10% of the company? What's the pattern I was supposed to see? I'm not into artificially pumping diversity numbers at all but this woman make video game bad stuff is high up there in gamer cringe, you don't know that most of them don't love games as much as anyone here.

I think anyone blaming diversity for Halo's showing is missing the mark by a mile. Maybe 10 miles. Probably 100 miles.

My guess is that a distinct lack of diversity of thought caused this showing.

If a 1.8tf machine with a hairdryer CPU can do this:
There is no excuse for a machine with a 12tf gpu and a MUCH MORE powerful cpu to don't do anything close to that at 4k@60.
Ditch native 4k if you have to, reconstruction techniques have improved a lot this gen, we don't need native 4k for anything.

GoT:

30fps
1080p on base PS4
Small scale battles, I mean a max of no more than 10 or 15 enemies on screen at a time ever?
Little to no physics interactions
Virtually no explosions
Nearly entirely verticle, as in you will rarely if ever go from ground to somewhere high in a short amount of time
Entirely single player

Halo Infinite:

60fps
4k
Going by past entries will have highly varied environments, weapons, vehicles, and enemies.
Multiplayer wherein there be a potential (going off halo 5) 24 players causing massive amounts of choas, full physics for countless vehicles, parts, all weapons, etcetc, and tons of explosions and other things that cause framerate dips.
Hop in a shop and take off over the map in seconds

I mean cmon. Halo is big chaotic fun. Comparing visuals to a single player only game is somewhat ridiculous.

Battlefield 1 is 4k60 on the X1X.
What's the excuse now?

That all my comment meant to do was show why comparisons to different types of games is stupid. I don't see why there even needs to be an excuse. Halo Infinite will either be a good, fun game or it won't.

Funny part is he asks if he should do the 8 minute gameplay later if it's any better, but what he watched was the "good" trailer which appeared to have proper HDR mapping than the flat gameplay trailer.
Oh, I didn't know if there was a difference.... I know people have nostalgia for the franchise, I used to play a bit too but I was watching Chris Ray Gun and it was like he was seeing the greatest thing ever, he was on Sacred Symbols and he said the event was great and everything he wanted.

I don't understand it...... if GOW came out with a bad looking next gen game, Sony / SSM would get serious shit.

The casuals and non-informed gamers that make up most of the install base don't care or know about those differences about game types.
What they see is current gen games looking much better than what is supposed to be one of the biggest next-gen games. Just this year Sony released 2 games that look MUCH better, and we had RDR2, BF5 and others.
You don't sell the MOST POWERFUL console by showing something that seems to be running on a Wii U while the competition shows something much prettier running on a 7 year old console (not mention other games from MS 1st party that already look much better on current gen).

How disconnected from reality is 343? (and maybe MS)
How could they think that would be enough? Have they been locked away from the rest of the world for the past 3 years to not know what other studios have done? (even inside the same genre).

I'm not super into video stuff, but I think there is, my Thinkpad P1 has an HDR capable 500 nits screen and comparing this

to this

The bright spots appear to get eye searingly bright in the latter, where the former is very flat and muted. Which is why I'm guessing what happened is an HDR source was recorded in SDR.

And then further look at the gameplay demo converted to 1000 nits HDR on a capable screen, looks way better to me

The other graphics issues like pop in and textures still stand, but I think part of their problem was not doing the HDR workflow right for the gameplay which is why it looked so drab

I don't think the point is that women or -insert race- can't make good games. It's that the hiring practices are a reflection of the priorities of the company and hiring people based on their skin or plumbing doesn't have much to do with game development.

Damn, having Gareth Coker doing (some) of the music is probably the next best thing to having Marty reunite with Halo.

The worst part about all of this is that this the only Halo they're making. They didn't stop & think that a 7 year Halo as a live-game only works if you knock it out of the park first. If it's shit, then you're stuck with shit for a long time, further destroying Halo's brand value after it already suffered post-Bungie.
You DO REALIZE the game hasn't even released yet right broski??

Lol. Holy shit. You guys try way too hard.

i dont think posting a picture of women who likely had nothing to do with halo looking so fucking awful is not the right way to go about making your point. unless of course you know the inner workings of 343i and know of women engineers and artists who mucked this all up.

If you wanna find a scapegoat, we dont have to assume, we have plenty of info on who to blame.
- Don Matrick - Decided to make a shitty 1.3 tflops gpu with shitty ram to focus on tv.
- Phil Spencer - Decided not to make this a xsx exclusive.
- 343i lead designers - Decided to make a 60 fps open world game with realtime time of day on a 1.3 tflops gpu with these god awful jaguar cores. Sony studios had 50% more tflops and didnt even bother making 60 fps open world games on this their console.
- Phi Spencer again - Misled everyone on the internet saying that cross gen games wont be held back by the 1.3 tflops xbox one knowing exactly how bad this game looked for a next gen game.
- Xbox marketing - Decided to push for 4k 60 fps instead of 4kcb or 1440p 60 fps with all bells and whistles because you know native 4k sells apparently.

Preach!!!

Really reaching here. GoT looks better in every way, on a system with almost 1/3 the power, and yet it manages to do more simulation.

We have a full wind simulation, particle system integration, grass integration. Grass and foliage collision.

Heck, the explosions in Halo Infinite look to be some very low-quality stuff. They're basically throwing off a single-pixel light. Physics interactions, see above. Halo can't even animate the grass without a damn physics system. The particles seem to disappear on a per-frame basis. It looks like the entire thing is aggressively culled to hell and back. The foliage draw distance is quite possibly the same as in previous Halo games with no improvement.

No, just no. You do not get to claim "The Most Powerful Console Ever" and bring something that's claim to fame is that it runs at a high resolution, but looks worse in almost every other regard compared to a game on a 7 year-old system. I'm 100% certain the PS5 version of GoT is going to look far, far, better than Halo Infinite, and that will be a game ported, not something "created from the ground up for series X".

Let’s be real. Creating a new studio is all well and good but handing the biggest franchise on the platform over to a team without any history of achievement or prior big project win is a laughable notion a best. I’d say the performance of 343 thus far has been tragically and depressingly lacklustre. Let’s recap a bit of their history. Halo 4 was 4-6hrs of hot garbage; a game peppered with bad decisions and a fundamental misunderstanding of what makes Halo tick. I’ll never forget the utter disrespect shown when they retconned massive portions of the lore, undermining the previous entries in the worst possible way. Halo 5 was the same story; it did away with split screen and saw us share playtime with Locke; a character nobody gave a shit about. And how can we forget the travesty that was the MCC. It’s still to this day plagued with issues and was nigh on unplayable for months after release. Why reward such a team with one of the largest video game budgets in history to produce what we saw with Infinite? Think of the other projects that could of been green lighted with even a portion of that budget. It’s inconceivable to me that 343 could produce something so technically and visually disappointing with the advantages they have in regards to hardware access, development time and resource.

IMO, Microsoft should award teams that perform with the opportunity to work on the biggest franchises. Like Playground with Fable. Teams should earn the right to work on the big franchises. The model of new game after new game in a series by teams that don’t deliver is not working one bit. The metacritic scores make it clear. The lack of new IPs has almost killed the brand and a lot of people are tired playing the same series well past it’s sell by date. I’m a huge Halo and Xbox fan but Sony handle their studios with so much more care. Allow deserving teams to pursue projects of passion for years, I.e. Sucker Punch with Ghosts of Tsushima or Naughty Dog last time round with the original TLOU. 343 should of had to earn their way back after their previous letdowns via new smaller budget original IPs. Their unearned privilege within the umbrella of Microsoft game studios should be derided by everyone at this point.

Honestly, considering that the biggest gripes people had with the demo were the lighting, LOD and pop-in, and that the textures all seemed to be very high quality and very beautiful (even if the lighting made them look flat) I have to agree that there is a good chance that the finished game will look substantially better on XSX when it launches this November. Even if not, a ray tracing update is confirmed for XSX for post launch (probably a feature delayed because of Covid and everything happening in Seattle) will also almost certainly make everything look better as well.

From what I am aware of (and I could be totally off-base here, I have a few developer friends but they all work at smaller studios) the lighting and LOD optimizations are usually handled towards the end of development for consoles to ensure a perfect balance of graphics and performance

There's actually a ton of really low quality assets everywhere in the game... not sure what you're saying.

Games are a work of art.

The talent and craft is seen in every piece of detail.

Not all artists are equal. No matter what they are paid.

Now that MS is doing away with exclusives, MS should pay Sony a few hundred mil to have SSM or ND do a version of Halo. Can you imagine.

I mean yeah, 4 months away now. The clip was probably made for E3 or whatever event in April/May but for argument's sake let's say that the build is from early July. The game is very likely feature complete by now (or very close to it) meaning that the only things left are QA and bug fixing and console port optimizations (IE what settings are used, and customizing settings if needed). That would include things like LOD, texture quality, lighting effects, lighting detail and much more

Could you keep the sexist political crap out of the thread? They don't represent the whole company and it has no bearing on whether game is good or bad, get out your basement.
How is it sexist to point out that the studio has a "diversity and inclusion" policy? You have a bunch of people who were hired because of whatever else than their resume.

Obviously, we don't know if it had any actual effect on this specific project. But I think this is fair to ask ourselves if there are chances are that if the inclusion policy ran amok it ended up hurting the product (you don't just have to hire people from "marginalized" groups, you also NEED to promote them ASAP, you have to put their ideas above those of others and you need to affirm them all the way). This is the plan to eliminate unconscious biases, you can't just brush off criticism of this way of working, these people had a $500million budget!

You can't just take one side's politics and get upset when people react to it.

This is what happens when you drop any appearance of a merit based system.

That will make some level of differences (I assume the series X could eliminate the pop ins and handle better lighting effects).. but I suspect it will not make the game a looker.

Halo is doing their thing and reminding everyone that graphics don't matter.
Worst excuse ever!

The whole it's not about graphics it's about gameplay bullshit statement is getting a little old. We are in a time where AAA companies should be able to pull off both. We have the tech where its no longer a trade off. Please stop defending that crap.

We are talking about a game they are showcasing for Xbox Series X, Microsoft has jammed down everyone's throats about the most powerful console, such a beast! And this is what the result is. It's just a failure in development like many other Microsoft Exclusive titles over recent years.

I'm starting to think Microsoft does not understand games and gamers. They are sales people pushing products and services with a lot of empty promises, that's a fact, they have a proven track record of that!

This idea that they have 4 months if they release in end of November is off anyhow. They still have physical retail discs to manufacturer and ship around the world, given the current climate of covid19 shipping is slow as well plus they have a console to do the same with. Literally the console hardware/software will be locked in shortly, the game development has at best 2-3 months to finalise. Any other work will be day one patches for online connectivity and any physical retail hard copy versions of the gold game will be set in DVD stone.

They're out of time and behind. 5 fucking years. As a Halo fan I'm pretty pissed off from MCC to esports H5 to now this gameplay reveal. They had everything going for them, now they're way behind the 8 ball again. 500 staff and all the resources and access of Microsoft/Xbox/343. Ugh.

This game better play smooth as butter and as tasty as chocolate when it drops and hopefully they're just keeping everything under wraps. A large part of me knows better though and show does the 343 track record.

Correlation does not imply causation

You are assuming that HR doesn't take merit into account, only diversity, that a small number of "diversity" workers have big power to influence decisions based on their backgrounds and that those are the only reasons why quality can degrade. Yup, entirely reasonable.

I think none of this would've ever been brought up as criticism if they'd just delayed showing infinite. Like seriously, didn't anyone internally at MS not feel ok about revealing this gameplay? They could've put out a tweet a few weeks in advance mentioning "Hey fans, we know you're dying to see Halo Infinite but our teams are hard at work and feel the game isn't ready yet in the highest possible quality standards that fans have come to expect from us. We sincerely apologize for the delay, rest assured when we show you our game we will leave you impressed. Over and out" - 343 Studios

That only really works if they feel like it's going to look significantly better at launch. At some point, it's better just to show it and take your lumps, because the longer you wait, the higher people's expectations will be. And if they had delayed it, what XSX (representative) gameplay would they have to show off? It would have all been trailers for undated projects.

Sony delayed the Last Guardian until one gen later, when they finally were able to run it as it was originally envisioned. They released it not for money (because at this point they were never making the money back) but to keep a promise. Sometimes you notice the kind of priorities that a company has.

Same with Nintendo, who launched BotW on WiiU because they said they would. But they delayed it massively until they could deliver what was promised. Notice that Nintendo and Sony cared about keeping promises. Very different from Western companies.

Ah, I thought you were talking about delaying the announcement a bit. I didn't dealize you were saying they should delay the entire launch of the game until it was ready. I can see your point now.

Correlation does not imply causation

You are assuming that HR doesn't take merit into account, only diversity, that a small number of "diversity" workers have big power to influence decisions based on their backgrounds and that those are the only reasons why quality can degrade. Yup, entirely reasonable.

You're being about as reasonable as the arguments you're putting in my mouth.

As for correlation, once again, you are choosing to assume it has nothing to do with the cause. Other people are choosing to believe it might have something to do with it.

Casual gamers will buy Halo by the millions. If MP is fun they will also make tens of millions of dollars in additional revenue. I understand being upset the graphics aren't better, but people on here are acting like this is it for Xbox and Halo are hilarious. First Halo release in how long with a day one launch on steam? Launch title with massive brand recognition. We have also probably seen a fraction of a percent of the game, and have seen better looking footage already than what premiered.
