Recoup? They OWN ABK. ABK value went anywhere. Do you really think they donate money to ABK?
Thu bought the shares, they now own the shares but don’t have the money anymore. I think you’re the one that doesn’t understand. They need to now make a “return on investment” and the only way that’s going to happen in any sort of realistic timeframe is by going 3rd party.

Fail Spencer can't stay on. I mean, he was in it for personal glory as per leaked emails. He wanted to purchase Nintendo for his own career moment to be that guy.

Instead he is seemingly forced to go multiplatform with his grand scheme.

He failed.

This is a major win for Jim Ryan. Can’t imagine the pressure of strategists everywhere going on about releasing first party day one on PS+ and PC because of the “threat” of gamepass.

Ryan clearly never believed subscription services were the future for big profit in gaming. Microsoft bet all eggs on a system that players appear to not have that much interest on. The ones that do like it on Xbox then ended up not buying new games at full price, completely fucking up profit from the production of Microsoft first party titles.

Microsoft loses, Sony wins, and Jim Ryan becomes a legend.

The issue is the Xbox fans, nobody seems to want to explain to them how this move will benefit them in any way, shape, or form. How do you explain to the loyal fans who spent alot of $ on an Xbox console to play Xbox exclusives, that those exclusives are no longer a thing, when many of those gamers now feel like they wasted $500 on Series X or $300 on a Series S now that those games are no longer exclusive? Money they now feel would have been better spent on PC or PS5. How do you justify a move which seems like it will actually hurt the chances of 3rd party developers porting to Xbox consoles in the future, when Xbox is already the platform most in need of ports (no exclusives means less hardware sales, less hardware sales means smaller playerbase, smaller playerbase means higher difficulty of seeing a return on investment on your port to Xbox)? How do you soothe those who feel cheated and burned by Microsoft due to this move?

Is Xbox going to use the money from this multiplatform move to buy hardware success next gen, either through more acquisitions (perhaps) or hatting 3rd party exclusives (doubtful)? Will they use this multiplat money to pay 3rd party developers to port to Xbox consoles (doubtful)? Or are Microsoft and gamers on other platforms really the only ones who benefit from this move, while your own loyal fanbase gets the shaft?

That's because it won't benefit Xbox fans.

Upon thinking this through further, this is probably their way of being allowed to buy up more giant publishers.

“We will put games on every system, so let us buy TAKE 2, EA, Ubi,”
Microsoft higher ups probably don’t understand the need to limit their profits to their own box. Specially when they have the least market share.

Google doesn’t limit their services to just android, cause iPhone is just too big a piece of the pie. By not limiting Xbox as Playstation’s competitor rather than Google’s PlayStore, and Apple‘s App Store... gives the ability to purchase more marketshare as you state.

Microsoft can be more successful by releasing all games on Playstation, but giving Xbox first dips (aka the COD model), they be harder to match of they buy more third party publishers. This isn’t a L, as people think. Only thing this really hurts is green rats.

It should take pressure off their studios and allow them to make better games, since they will have a much bigger audience now and can be more successful commercially

So it’s not accurate to say it won’t benefit Xbox fans. It benefits all fans

But the delusional fanboys that care more about winning the console war they never had a chance in hell of winning will somehow be butthurt because their tiny walled garden is open now

NO!

We PlayStation fans will not let that happen. Phil Spencer is amazing and must stay. We'll protest otherwise and win by sheer majority. 😛 #Phil4Life

As you stated, they will buy more publishers. Ubisoft would be a easy buy. Playstation will get all games. But Xbox players will get first dips. What does first dips mean? Beta test games, get multiplayer maps first, exclusive DLC, etc. Since they games will release in more platforms they will have bigger budgets as well. Sure “Fanboys” might get upset about this. But the mass market will just care they have access to COD, Elder Scrolls, Minecraft, Assassin’d Creed, etc 2 months ahead by “beta” preorder.

Microsoft will still push customers towards Xbox because that’s how they keep 100% of the profits to their games. There is a future where Microsoft makes more money out of Playstation than Sony themselves if they buy enough publishers.

Do you think they will get past the hurdles of more major acquisitions like ea, ubi etc? Is this soft pivot to third party a cover to try to make regulators less likely to block new acquisitions?

lol they are not gonna buy ANYTHING until they get out of this ROI mess first, and that can take years. Even smaller studios would likely be off the table at this point, let alone big publishers.

It’s a different Story for Sony and Nintendo, which doesn’t have another platform and if they would sell at PC they will get less money compared to selling on their own platform, but Microsoft does not have this problem.

It is precisely the same problem when you are talking about Valve taking a 30% cut. So far as MS Game Studios titles on Steam go, they are effectively a third party publisher on their own operating system.

I'm surprised there has been zero murmurering about a potential Valve acquisition. They would immediately starting keeping all of the sales revenue on the umpteem development teams they now own, and it could be a bargaining chip for more favorable terms when publishing their content on PlayStation.

They have a financial crater the size of $90bn. They are mercilessly nuking the hardware, re-defining the whole software strategy and laying-off half of PlayStation Studios headcount in a single day.

Yeh, sure bud, they gonna buy Ubisoft next (they legally can't do anything to Ubisoft for 15 years tho, including investments).

So we're just believing baseless rumors now?
People literally datamined PS5 support from recent Hi-Fi Rush update, the info about Xbox going 3rd party was corroborated by Tow Warren (de-facto MS' semi-official mouthpiece) and some of you are still in denial phase, wow.

Until it's official then I can't believe. It doesn't make any sense for it to be real.

It actually does make a lot of sense. That's why so many of us have tried to warn that this will happen. The writing was on the wall.

And these aren't just rumors. Microsoft's CEO Tim Stuart already confirmed this back in November 2023. Everybody just chose to ignore what he said because they didn't want to accept it.
