I don’t give a shit what you think of Valhala and what it means for Ragnarok. If you think they took a shit on GOW then you are illiterate to the point of not even understanding what was happening in GOW18.

If you think the garbage he wrote is remotely true let’s just leave it at that. Everybody is entitled to look like an idiot.
If you dont give a shit, dont bother replying with nonsense. no one cares about your ramblings.

There's someone here who is embarrassing himself, kiddo. And it ain't me.

Well I could write some absurd shit like you’re out of touch, clearly a pussy boy, who had an absent father who maybe at best told you your mother was a slut, but I’ll just file this one under “guy who spends too much time in angry guy internet and has fucked up his YouTube algo beyond salvation”.

It takes a reall repressed closeted individual to believe Kratos didn’t solve almost every problem in Ragnarok with his fists.

I haven't played FFXVI or TOTK yet so my opinion probably doesn't count when it comes to these four, but even without playing those two the worst writing has to be between Starfield and GOW: Ragnarok. I loved GOW 2018, 2nd favorite SIE game of the PS4 gen behind Ghost of Tsushima. Ragnarok is no GOW 2018. Story does not keep me interested, and it's all over the place. It's more like a high school drama than a story about actual powerful gods. The other part is that the world feels more lifeless than any previous GOW, like the environments don't add anything to the story. I haven't finished the game, because I find myself not having enough interest to go back. The story has no pull for me, and the gameplay is good but not addictive at all, so I guess I'll finish it when I get around to it.

I love Bethesda games, loved Skyrim and Fallout 3, actually really enjoyed Fallout 4 even with the terrible response system. Starfield is a ton of fun for me despite it's story, but that's no excuse for the terrible writing. I legitimately hate two of the companion partners and their whiny characters (Sarah and Sam), and the backgound stories of all of them have gaping holes, are completely silly, or are completely unrealistic. I don't buy any of their stories, and would not be sad to see any of them die off. They are so unrealistic that there is no emotional connection at all. The main story has promise, and some of the questlines are good, but so many are just silly or ridiculous. There is also no edge to the game. Neon is a city with an addictive drug that everyone raves about, it's supposed to have a seedy underbelly due to this. But where are the drug addicts? Where is the seedy side? Everything is so sanitized and sterile. Interestingly the best part is the environmental storytelling. Some of the locations have stories built in that have to do with why they were abandoned, and some of these are incredibly well done. I just wish those types of stories persisted throughout the whole world.

Haven't played Starfield or Spider Man.

Out of the other 3 it's probably Zelda for me. Just like BOTW I found the plot boring and uninspired, I also didn't like how they found an excuse for most of the important events to take place in the past....again.
There's not much in terms of memorable characters or story moments in Tears of the Kingdom IMO.
"OMG the 40th character saw Zelda do something evil...I wonder if it's the real one?!?!?!?!?".

Gow was decent though I didn't like their take on Thor. Atreus is still annoying and they made Kratos so tame he is just kinda boring now.
FFXVI was was amazing for the first two thirds, then they throw it all away for another cookie cutter JRPG plot.

I only played the demo of ffxvi but I can safely say its that.

I'm playing through Ragnarok again and I actually don't mind it, there are a few schizophrenic moments though where characters don't transition between being angry and calm.

Spiderman isn't too bad. Kraven is great, but again the in-your-face over the top wokeness kills parts of the game.

Speaking about this though, Gotham Knights surprised me with such a solid campaign.

Starfield - mmhmmmm, I can't think the writing particularly bothered me, more the character transitions - same issue as Ragnarok in parts.

Not played TOTK yet, and probabl6ly won't. But from what I played of BOTW it seemed to mainly be typical jrpg style dialogue?

Your leap of logic is like me saying well, since you wrote what you wrote you’re clearly an incel who courts underage girls and fantasize about beating women.

It’s an absurd leap yes? Because that’s what his post is, just in reverse.

I didn’t write that, I just did an absurd leap of logic like you did. And in the leap of logic, I wrote your father called your mother a slut, but apparently you read father, I’m a male, therefore I’m your father figure and I’m calling your mother a slut?

But apparently you can’t even interpret such basic text, what a surprise.

Exactly. Thank you. It is fucking insufferable. Whiny, preachy, ball-less garbage by woke imbeciles, and it utterly ruined any enjoyment I had out of it. Same as Spiderman 2. I don't give a fuck about their shitty undergraduate politics, I just want to kill things.

That it has support here just blows my mind.
Honestly aside from that one fucking scene where MJ and Peter have a therapy session while beating the shit out of each other, it was not preachy despite being insanely woke throughout. And at the end of that scene, the woman admitted she was wrong and apologized to Peter. I was fucking shocked to see something like that come out of Insomniac.

Aside from that, characters like Harry, Kraven and even Peter with the symbiote suit were well written. They were consistent with their comic counterparts and the woke stuff only mainly affected the side quests. Miles is useless, but not annoying like the little shit Atreus.

It's 2023 and all I am asking for is for my characters to not be preachy. Its poor writing in ANY medium.

ToTk surprised me with the story. I legit had the same complaints about BOTW's story being boring and uninspired but the flashbacks with zelda going back into the past and then all those epic war scenes were way better than any zelda game ive played. I am a sucker for time travel so when the flying dragon turned out to be zelda, i was like holy shit thats awesome. the ending is also very memorable with you fighting alongside the zelda dragon then saving her in a dive. great setpiece and you dont get that if they dont setup the zelda sacrifice in the flasbacks. the main story i agree isnt that great but those 12 flashbacks were awesome.

I hardly remember any writing in Zelda, and that's a good thing. The writing in FF16 was actually decent, though the story was meh. Didn't play the others.

Starfield and GoW: Ragnarok for me. Starfield got to a point where it was so hard to pay attention for me. It barely held onto my attention. Ragnarok's was pretty bad too, it felt worse than the previous game.

That's your response? You were caught in a lie, and your response is 'durrrr ask your therapist lol'?

Reminder - this is all because I have an opinion of a video game that you don't share.

Uh it’s write there “I could write some absurd shit like(…)” get it?

Write there. Get it? No? It’s write there.

I haven't played SP2 but I think Starfield takes the cake for me, though it's pretty close. Zelda has some words in it, I guess. I don't really feel strongly about it one way or another.
GoW Ragnarok though, that was something else. Felt like I was watching a Marvel movie half the time. Some godawful dialogue in there, felt like a huge stepback from the original. Though strangely enough, there were moments where I felt that the writing was good again. My immediate thought was that the more important and bigger scenes were handled by someone without purple hair while the rest was made by..purple hair. Unfortunately, the same seems to have happened to SP2 from what I've seen other people say about it.
FF16 started out strong and then took a nosedive for me when the main big bad arrived. I still liked it because Clive is such an amazing character that carried the entire game on his back for me. I just felt like I had already experienced the same story executed much better before like in, say, FF14.

But Starfield? Oh man. It is incredibly boring, to the point it puts you to sleep. The big twist is a kick in the balls. The characters have 0 personality and all of them talk too much, they need a thousand words to say something that could be said in 5. Never have I skipped dialogue so often in a video game ever, as I'm the type of persion that really likes to dig deep and listen to what these characters have to say. Not here. Doesn't matter if its a faction quest or the main quest, it all bored me to tears.

I think it's the ridiculous decision to not have your character utter the lines on screen. Some of the 'evil' options are legit hilarious and couldve made for a very mass effect like experience but you never see your character speak. its so stupid and every single line falls flat.

I still dont think the main quests or the faction quests were as poorly written as gow. The side characters are awful but I chose not to engage with them. I have no idea what happened here. its really shoddy writing. this is not how you do romance or befriend people. i wouldnt be surprised if chatgpt wrote those companion dilogue trees because the rest of the game is fine. boring, but not offensively bad.

unfortunately, i'm afraid you're asking just a bit too much. it's become obvious that a number of writers no longer know how to (or dare to?) write, you know, 'dialogue'. so, yeah, what we're left with is a whole lot of moralizing. &, if it feels off, it's because this isn't the way we, over the course of our daily lives, actually communicate with each other...

my personal suggestion to game writers? read a few elmore leonard novels. if nothing else, you'll enjoy yourself...

Yeah the "twist" at the end with Zelda and the dragon was indeed pretty cool. So I stand corrected in that there was some good story bits.
Overall though I still think the story was pretty weak. The flashbacks are decent for Zelda standards but are nothing special beyond that, and I think the cool parts (like when Ganondorf shows up with his army) would have been more impactful if they didn't take place generations ago from when you are playing as Link.

If I have to hear about the imprisoning war one more time… all other games on this list have stories that have some kind of genuinely interesting dynamic/drama/character. Totk is the only answer in terms of “worst writing”

FF16 does not belong in this list. It started out strong and turned into JRPG fate trash towards the end, but like you said the characters were the highlight and remained strong all the way till the end. Clive and Jill are easily the best couple on screen in years. Both immensely likeable despite carrying a lot of trauma. Note to Neil Druckman, you dont have to make your characters a cunt just to show PTSD. Clive, Jill, and even Dion show resolve, grit and the ability to grow from their past trauma instead of letting it envelop them like Abby and Ellie. Maybe thats the story Neil was trying to tell, but it fell flat for me whereas it was refreshing to see these larger than life characters consistently try to do the right and honorable thing.

P.S Any game with Sid, the best side character this year, should not even be included in a poll like this. He was charming, charismatic, pragmatic, witty, and honorable like a fucking game of thrones character. He carried the first half of the game. Hell, even the villains aside from the main baddie were excellent. Its just that last act with fantasy fate of the world crap that lets the story down but WORST writing? come on.

Starfield main story is extremely boring, but the sidequest are great, while FFXVI main story is awesome, but most side quests are boring.

GoW Ragnarok was cool, Atreus was annoying, but that was it.

I didn't play Zelda and Spider 2 and I don't plan on doing it, since I don't like Nintendo games and super heroes stuff. So...

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch?
I'll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I've been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I'm the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You're fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that's just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. I have read several screenwriting handbooks and preachiness along with monologues is heavily discouraged because no one talks like this in real life. these guys probably dont have any writing backgrounds or have forgotten screenwriting 101.

the spiderman and mj fight is probably the worst example of this ive seen. but the rest of the game is well written. the cutscene immediately following that fight is also very concise and redeems MJ as she finally takes accountability for her actions. So it was very odd to see them write that trash during the actual fight. my guess is that the writers knew that a woman apologizing would probably not look good to era members so they had peter apologize to her while she ranted about sacrificing her career for Peter during the actual fight.
