Final Fantasy XVI Previews are Dropping

Like I said before, it's not the same thing.

Doesn't have the same budget, narrativelly does different things, not all turn based battle systems are the same, etc.
Big budget does not mean the game will play better. I've found that for the most part AA budget games tend to be more engaging and fun then AAA budget games. Probably has something to do with vision and having a passion to make that vision a reality.

The ground lights up to show where powerful attacks will land, you have a few seconds to move to safety. Trials of Mana did this too, I think.
I think that a lot of games where bosses\enemies do area of effect attacks you have some sort of telling on where their attack is gonna land so you can avoid them...

I agree. But still, I would like a FF game with FF XVI graphics(or close enough) that was true to its roots.

But alas, probably a fool's dream at this point.

11+ hours of cinematics? Even if that's on top of the 35 hour playtime that seems excessive. I know modern ff has tons of cut scenes but that was one of my bigger complaints about ff7 remake.

After about 2/3s of that game I was getting pretty bored with them.
It's because the cutscenes in that games contained kingdom hearts level fanfiction changes to the original plot and they had to milk a 5 hours section into a 40 hours game.

Of course the pacing was dogshit.

The closest you are gonna get is probably Dragon Quest. The old RPG style has long set sail. Action games have made sure of that. The popularity of action combat is simply too strong to ignore.

Eh, that's not exactly true. There are plenty of games finding success, big success, being turn based, like Fire Emblem and Persona, without having nowhere near the brand name that FF has. Devs ignore the power of a good battle system has, specially in this day and age that gaming is more popular than ever.

But yeah, you are probably right. Doesn't mean I don't have to like it.

The reason you aren’t gonna get turn based games with this budget is the same reason midnight suns failed. The audience isn’t there for it
They didn't even tried with ff7, and instead we had that milking operation with an hybrid combat system that i hated.

The brand was strong enough to sell good even with turn based combat, you lose some of the new audience but you get some more from the old fans.

I'm not sure from the previews, but wondering - is this going to be the first mainline FF with graphic sex scenes and HD nudity or is it all just implied?

Fuck you and your 11+ hours of cinematics. Who wants this? Like folks can't both malign narrative heavy affairs from the "big studios" and then be okay with being sitting on your hands for 11 hours of non-interactivity. That's absurd and I sure as shit hope not accurate.

Watched the Skill Up preview and it's looking amazing IMO.
Combat seems fun and responsive, visuals are nice, voice acting and music is apparently superb and the story is a bit darker and less anime cringe (though still with melodrama). Personally I'm also a fan of it not being open world, and they said there's still relatively big areas (just not one massive open world). Also doggo companion.
35 hours main story sounds amazing too, might actually not be a bloat fest like 99% of JRPG's.

Day 0 for me. Most hyped game of the year.
The only part I'm still not sold on are the "Icon" fights. Seems like style over substance though if there's plenty of solid regular boss battles I don't necessarily think it's an issue.

An interesting tidbit from the Skill Up video is that Koji Fox told him that while the game was written in Japanese by a Japanese writer, he then translated it into English and personally oversaw the motion and lipsync capture sessions, which were done in English. They later had to make some adjustements to the Japanese scrip to fit with the lip sync. So it's a weird case of a game written in japanese but then the performance capture and lip sync is made in english.

35 hrs of game is long enough but 11 hrs of cinematic if all mandatory is a bit annoying, not enough to put me off though

Thank god! lol

I saw that Michael Christopher Fox name on the wiki and rolled my eyes hard. Don't want no baka gaijin influence on this games story or characters.

And yet FE Three Houses sold more than 4 million units, and that data is more than a year old.
3.82 Million, and the data isn't renewed because nobody is gonna buy it anymore.

These franchises don't have long legs.

That's not a lot for a franchise that has decades of time to prove itself and get more popular and on a system that has multiple 10 million plus sellers.

oh no 11 hours of cinematics out of a 35 hour game.... the horror....you'll be watching cutscenes for a fraction of the time you're actually playing the game...

One man's meat is another man's poison. I'm not a huge cinematics fan anyways, but there is no way i'm watching more than 11 hours in a GAME, no matter how big it is.

I am just going to be blunt; what, the, Fuck, YoshiP

When has JRPG, ever, been a derogatory term when aimed at the japanese developer community around 2005ish?! I have some ideas but these kneejerk assumptions are immediately rebuffed with frank ideas of you reap what you sow.

The power of butthurt.

It's not rational, but its the stuff that can give you drive and ambition. Don't take it too seriously either. Lots of game classics were made for similar irrational reasons.

Imagine when they drop the first real trailer of FFVII Rebirth this year running on UE5, showing Cid, Vincent etc... Could even drop before XVI releases at this rumoured PS Showcase. 🤯

so the combat looks amazing but like in the previews is said , there is very little option when it comes to exploration although they hope it was only in the area of the demo so they dont reveal to much

i really hope that is the case , as good as the combat is i dont want to just traverse a corridor from one boss to another
After XV, I want this to be as far from open-world as possible.

It's sad that FF has largely walked away from it's roots, but if it manages to be a great game on it's own right, I'll be there.

But honestly, I wish that Square made a sub-series that would contain the games true to the franchise's roots and had a similar budget.
Maybe it's just me, but I have always seen and moved fina fantasy because it's a game that I think keeps re-inventing itself.

The only true roots it has are its summons, magic, and item names, Currency name, Cid, and Wedge.

I think FF is always representative of the times and technology a the time each entry comes to market.

Anyways, I am there on day one, this would be my first $70 game worth buying for the year.. I am tempted to sell my PS5, just to buy another one when the game comes out so I can say I bought it for the game haha.
