My thoughts are that this isn't right for a controller that's $200.

However;
1. Since the shell is the same and you're adding additional hardware maybe they couldn't fit a bigger battery.
2. It's a Pro Controller, majority of Pro audience will use it wired anyway to reduce input latency.

“The DualSense Edge wireless controller’s operating time is moderately shorter than the original DualSense wireless controller because we’ve included many more features within the same form factor and ergonomic design as the original DualSense controller. We wanted to strike a good balance between wireless operating time and delivering robust, high-performance features. Additionally, the longer USB braided cable is also great for competitive players who prefer playing with a wired connection to avoid wireless interference – this option preserves battery life.” said PlayStation to The Verge.

Some YouTuber needs to test that "braided cable" theory.

Are batteries pretty linear in their length of time?

So if the newer battery is about 33% smaller, the game time will be 33% shorter?

I don't think using it wired even does reduce latency (which is already very low wirelessly).

Probably had to make space for the locking mechanism for the sticks.

This is true, I wouldn't be surprised if Wireless is exactly the same if not faster but people will assume wired = better even though we see wireless Mice out there being used competitively and a preferred choice. Personally, I would use it wireless most of the time so the battery being smaller is a bummer as I have long ass gaming sessions. But at least there is a wire long enough so, it is what it is.

Whew, I pre-ordered this thing as soon as it went live to do so, but cancelled a few weeks ago because I just felt like it wouldn't be up to snuff, wow am I glad I did.

I'm a controller collecting fiend, and the price wasn't a factor for me, but a ~33% smaller battery for a "premium" product is just insulting.

Def won't be getting one then, Battery life is my biggest complaint with my PS5.. I feel like I have to charge it every other day and my Xbox controllers seems to last me over a month before I need to pop them out and recharge.

Holy god.

The ds5 one lasts JUST long enough now but I anticipate having to replace the batteries in 2 more years when they get annoyingly shy of full capacity.

disgusting!

Greed on another level being displayed by Sony here.

Hope it bombs. But sadly we have a LOT of sheep out there who are willing to buy anything that is new and shiny.

Funnily enough the new one looks about the size of 2 AAs... I have 2 2400 mAh LADDA batteries that have lasted about 30 hours of game time in my Series pad.

I wasn't going to get one anyway, but dear lord they do not give a single shit about battery life.

I wish the clowns that proposed the battery-sucking "feature" that is the touchpad were never born.

This controller screams "poorly designed".
Hey, we have less room for a battery if we keep the same form factor of the Dualsense...ok, just use a smaller battery. Should we make it removable? Nah. Should we contract out a company to produce us a battery that fits our form factor without sacrificing the mah? Nah.

Hey, we use trash bargain bin analog sticks, should we use the superior Hall Sensing modules? Nah, just make them removable so we can make our customers replace them for 500x the cost we can source them for.

And they're charging how much for this thing? Highway robbery.

So, if they would have used the same battery as the standard DS5, would the battery life have been moderately better, or the same as a regular DS5?

Hmm....I wonder.

Calling people sheep because some of us are willing to pay for the other features is pretty harsh

Not all of us are super concerned over the battery and personally I am happy to give battery life up for the added features on this controller

It strikes a great balance for some of us
