The dude at Futureshit opened up a brand new Magic and let me play with it a bit (are they allowed to do that???)... I want so bad. It feels perfect in my hand, I like the look, even with the "older" UI, i love it's Google'ness. But yeah... the dude was upfront with "expect to pay close to $100 a month after taxes/fees if you want basic shit like voicemail/caller id/texting"... WAY too rich for my blood :)
My bill is about $80 / mo after taxes. 600 anytime minutes, unlimited night and weekend, free roaming, voicemail, call waiting, etc., and the G1 unlimited text and data package. Not bad I say.

I can see it now.

"Cool phone, what is it?"
"Its a Mytouch 3g"
"You want me to touch what?"

Blerg. The packaging looks hip though. I'm tempted to jump to Tmobile for it.

As stated, remember it could be worse. Could have been the myPhone.:lol

Considering the included dataplan, your bill's not too bad, El Papa.

Oh okay, anyway, can someone answer me, why my HTC Magic keep popping up with the following message:

"Sorry!
The process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
"

This message keepsp popping up everytime I turn on the phone today, and it'll keep popping up. What's the problem? And how do I solve this?

I can't even seem to log into my Google account now, with my password.

Whoa I need to go to Futureshop to check it out then. Rogers store refuses to open one up for me for demo :( As for the plan price, the one they recommend is a $35 data plan that has voicemail, caller display, unlimited text messages (I think), 500Mb of data. That would be on top of my My5 plan (~$20), so that comes to roughly $60 after tax. Still very expensive though...

Anyone can answer this?
Should I go back to the store with it?
Or restor to factory level?

Have you hacked it at all? Regardless, you can always resort to a factory reset (but you'll have to resync all your data and reload your apps)

just do a factory reset. and if you still have that happening, return it. must be a bad build or some shit.

btw you haven't flashed it yet right?

Yeah, are you running the Rogers stock rom or did you flash the Hero rom? What you describe was happening to me alot with Hero, so I just flashed the Rogers rom, hasn't happened to me yet.

edit: I really like the Rogers rom. It's got the speed of 1.5 plus the HTC goodies I love like the HTC dailer, white on black texting, icons, PDF viewer, HTC keyboard, camera, camcorder, etc.

Pachimari

I don't even know how to flash as I bought the phone 2 days ago, so it's not flashed with any other ROM at all. =)

Anyway, I seem to have solved the problem, having changed the carrier from '3' to 'Telia' so it was the same as my SIM card.

Now that we're talking about flashing, anyone care to let me know?

So yeah, the Magic/Ion's gonna be called the MyTouch3G (bleh!). Black, White and Merlot.

Check 'em out here: http://www.engadgetmobile.com/photos/t-mobile-mytouch-3g-box-art-comes-out-to-play/

The black version has matching black keys!!

mytouch-3g-550x246.jpg

Now I'm torn between white and black. :/

And yeah, 5/18 manufacturing but August sales date sounds out of whack. I think they'll announced in a week or two that it'll go on sale early/mid-July.

I'd love if it goes on sale this month. But I'm considering just getting a G1 from craigslist if it doesn't and be done with it x__x

I'm going to upgrade my phone this summer for tmobile and I don't know if I want the myTouch or the Touch pro2. The main thing that is keeping me from the touch pro is that it runs windows mobile and I'm not sure if I want that. It looks dead sexy. I kind of want a physical keyboard since my current phone doesn't have one. I guess we will see what happens. What are some of your experiences with Android and windows mobile?

Can you tell me about the plan you got with the phone and how much it is ? Also, I'll appreciate any additional tibits you have about this phone specific to the Rogers service. I want to know if all the Android features are safely in this phone and not messed up by Rogers !

When I got the phone they had to change my voice plan. I'm currently on the $25 100+50 minutes (w/double minutes for a total of 250), the $15 messaging plan (there is a $20 one but mine is okay for what I use), and most importantly the $30 6GB data plan (important, as I like using my phone alot). The phone itself was $235 after activation on a three-year term ($199 Device Price + $35 Activation) and they gave me a $50 mail-in-rebate (which is why they market it as $149). I know they are pushing the $45 "Mega-Time Plan" but you only get 500MB of data with that one.

I haven't notice any problems with the phone. It synced with my Google account no problem, and customizing was easy to do. The only one issue I have is with the Market, but this is a problem that is not restricted to Rogers (long threads in other forums and Google help on this one). As for the "Rogers Specific Apps" (if you can call them that), they are just bookmarks to Rogers websites that launch in the browser (easily hidden). That seems to be the only bit of Rogers messing with the phone (oh, and Exchange support, like anyone uses that ;) ).

I warn you, it may induce jealousy in owners of other phones.

Exchange support is built in by HTC. You're phone looks really sexay, I almost envy but I need a hard keyboard. :)

So are are $60 a month plus SAF/911 + taxes? Do you have caller id, etc.? I am trying to justify myself spending that much on a phone every month :p

$15 messaging pack has Caller ID/Rogers Whocalled, 2500 text/1000 Pic+Video, Enhanced Voicemail.

$25 voice plan has 250 minutes + Unlimited evening and weekends.

$30 data plan has 6GB of data (which, without the promo, would have only gotten me about 1GB for that much).

Rogers is a company of thieves, but Bell/Telus are even crappier from my experiences.

So, comparatively, the $30 voice (Individual 300) + $25 data (unlimited web + 400 messages) is a good deal?

Also, apparently you can only lock yourself down for one year if you want? I know the price on the device would be higher but did anyone do this for T-Mobile and the G1?

Wow you must use their data plan extensively then if you need 6GB of data per month (lol porno, really ? I would have figured people would rather watch that stuff at home with HD monitors or something) The one I'm looking at is:
$20 voice plan + $35 data plan with value pack features such as text messaging, caller ID and voicemail (but only 500MB data per month)... I don't use the phone too extensively anyways so this sounds like my plan, which is still damn expensive.

I had a look at the magic in store today (I'm in au) but the lack of 3.5mm headphone jack is a real killer for me. I think I'm going to hold out for the samsung i7500. The magic did look and feel fantastic tho

That's understandable. A friend of mine has the same requirement, but also doesn't like using software keyboards, so he's waiting for a new Android smart phone with hardware keyboard.

The i7500 should be available soon. At least it will be here (June 15). I guess we need a thread for it soon :D

I just got a used k850i for $50 CDN with everything and I'm ecstatic LOL! I guess I'm a phone n00b.

I'm trying to hold off from using any smartphones until I graduate in a year at the earliest. I know if I get one now I'll be so poor!

Congrats on your purchases. I enjoy reading these threads because it's amazing how far phone tech. has come, especially with all the iPhone contenders!!

He said promo, not porno.

That Magic looks sexy as hell, but I'm probably going to hold out for something that has a slide-out keyboard, but DOESN'T have a "chin" like the G1.

I was bummed out that the G1 doesn't have 3.5mm jack, then I got this:

Jabra BT3030
Jabra_BT3030_2.jpg

It's basically a Bluetooth remote that you plug your earphones / headphones into. It's got a mic built in. Sound is pretty good. You can wear it like a dog tag or put it in your pocket.

yeah I had thought about that...... the samsung also has larger storage in it as well, which is pushing me in that general direction :)

can anyone with a magic confirm that the screen rotates when you turn the unit? I've read conflicting reports about that online

I can confirm it. Already showed proof a few pages back too. It should work with every Android phone.

thanks. Awesome, I had read on other forums that some peoples phone weren't tilting on the home screen, which is concerning for them
The home screen doesn't change orientation when you turn the phone and it doesn't need to. It will work with applications, settings etc., though.

I tried to weasel with the Rogers store guys into giving me a Magic with the $45 "mega plan" with SAF+911 fees included in the $45 but they wouldn't budge. I remember the good old days where Telus and Rogers fucking FOUGHT for your business. They used to buy out your contract with the other, offer crazy deals (remember $50 unlimited local calling?)... *sigh* now they best they could do was offer me 100 text messages a month to switch to Rogers from Telus.

TmoNews is reporting it should be out before the month is over. Sounds about right if you consider the box art already has leaked.

Can't wait to get it. Anybody have any experience with InvisibleShield?

And Skittleguy, how bad are the fingerprints on your black Magic?

The home screen auto rotate and fancy rotation animation are already part of the OS, just not enabled in the phones that are out. When dude in the video opens the app drawer, you can see an app called "Spare Parts" that enables the animations, plus a few other cool options. You can also download Spare Parts from Android Market. I have it on my G1, the fancy rotation animation gets annoying after a while.

Some roms that are out have the home auto rotate enabled.

Supposedly Zagg sucks, so I had Gadget Guard on mine. It was pretty cool not having to worry about scratching my phone, I could throw it in my bag with my keys, ect. I took if off last week because the moron that did the application at the mall did a horrible job and it started peeling on the edges.

That's a cool application, thanks for the tip. I can see the animation getting annoying, though.

The edges are supposedly always problem cases. I'll have to be careful when I apply mine.

That Samsung seems unnecessary bulbous.

Also, I wish they'd made the screen bigger.

I've had the G1 since launch (and am using it for this reply with great ease, thanks to ckohler). Before I got it, I was excited about the trackball as another option for interface, mostly drawing on Blackberry experience. However, the touch screen is so good and the GUI is so well-formatted for it (thanks to the high standard set by Apple) that it's a step backward to use the ball or any cursor system available.

From now on, companies should devote more space on the face of the phone for the screen, with just a minimal alottment for the hard keys.

Unless it has really, really good internal specs.

There is a way to gain adb shell root access using with a modified stock rom for the Magic on Rogers!

Now, I have the awesome boot screen :D
