God of War Ragnarök | New Trailer - State of Play | PS4, PS5

Meh the trailer is kinda lame. At least I'm not feeling much watching a trailer like this.
Bom Dia Hello GIF

I don't think it's a coincidence this took 5 years to make and the previous one only 4, even thought they were rebuilding their engine and rebooting an entire franchise.

I still think we're getting something like TLOU2: Something huge happening halfway through the game, a huge twist and then the game hits its 2nd act. Not sure if Atreus will be a playbable character during half of the game, not sure if Zeus is the middle game boss and we get the hammer, whatever it is, it'll be glorious. There's no way this game isn't going to be a fucking trip.

Kratos IS god of war! There's no way they'll kill him off. Retire him? Maybe, but they won't straight up kill him off. I also can't see atreus carrying the gameplay.

Rdr2 was garbage lol

Horrible to play gameplay wise
Horrible, cumbersome, annoying, frustrating and at times infuriating to play, yes.

But in terms of world design, setpieces, story and that amazing fucking protagonist, it is simply an astounding achievement. It's a shame that the game makes every single act of playing it such a chore because there is a great game behind all the ridiculous control issues. Starting from chapter 3 onwards, it has some of the best missions I've played in a game. Setpiece after setpiece. It was like playing a Naughty Dog game.

I hated myself for it, but had to give it my GOTY over GOW. And I played GOW for 200-300 hours that year.

Just didn’t find the other stuff compelling along with the sloggy gameplay

A few things I wanted to say seeing the recent discussions on here.

People seem to think Odin will be the big bad powerhouse of the game, I think it’ll be more interesting that. I see Odin as the “Joker” of the game, playing games and tricks on the characters rather than outright brute forcing them like his son Thor.

Secondly the idea that Atreus will some how replace Kratos or that Kratos will sacrifice himself for Atreus, I’m not going to speculate on the story elements too much but the idea of Atreus replacing Kratos in future games is laughable and also really shit, Kratos is the main character of this series and it just wouldn’t work without him.

Last trailer felt so fucking spoilery that if they really showed like 5% of the game surprises, this thing is gonna be gigantic.

Jesus i hope for like a 50 hours campaign without even considering all the side content.

So did I. I hated RDR1 and despise the story in GTAV so after the slow first 10 hours, I went to Bestbuy to trade it in. I sat in my car in the BB parking lot for two minutes and then drove back. The only thing kept me from returning it that day was that the story took itself seriously unlike GTAV and RDR1. I gave it another shot and I am glad I did. A thrill ride starting from midway through chapter 3 (around 15-20 hours) all the way till the end.

If they ever patch a 60 fps mode, give it another shot. Especially if you like Westerns. Its the best western story since Unforgiven. Dare I say even better. As a Solid Snake fan, I hate to admit it but Arthur Morgan is the best protaganoist in the history of video games. You have no idea how good the story gets.

It sucks that Rockstar went out of their way to make the game feel like a chore to play because the combat actually gets really good half way through as you long some of the better weapons and Dead Eye upgrades. The setpieces keep things fresh. The animations are godly. I wonder how many people quit in Chapter 2 because of the controls and slow pacing.

I liked the first half way more.

Second half majority of mission were mowing down dudes like a shooting gallery and chapter 5 was like a kick in the balls.

Why else would we play as atreus for half the game? Where is kratos if not dead? Maybe trapped somewhere?
The trailer could me misleading...but Atreus talking about protecting Kratos, Kratos blindly trusting his son in every step and saying he doesn't need protection could lead to a twist like that. Maybe even with a time skip to a more grown up Atreus? There's so many they could do, that's what makes these 2 months of wait a slog, lmao.

I trust SSM, whatever they do, i'm sure it'll be glorious.

It didn't feel spoilerish to me. Without context, I'm left thinking what the hell is going on from one cut to the next. I'm sure there's also some misdirection planted in there as well.

2018 never felt like a chore to play which i very much appreciated so if it's 50hrs of engaging content then I'm here for it.

One thing to consider too, SSM and ND are very good at putting out trailers, and having absolutely nothing line up theory wise from said trailers :pie_roffles:

If not spoilery story wise because you lack context, it was kinda spoilery with enemies, locations, bosses, fantastical creatures like that big jelly fish, the badass scene with thor, the scene with the moon and the wolves etc, some of them looked like very important parts of the game, like BIG moments...

I feel like they showed a lot of cool scene that i would have saved for when the game was in my hands, but if they have like 50+ of these moments in a span of 40-50 hours then i guess it is ok to spoiler a couple of them to hype people.

I dont watch the final trailers for these games for this very reason. They spoil everything. I was watching the stream and just looked away when i realized it was going to be a collection of all setpieces and best story moments instead of one big gameplay demo.

They did a good job not spoiling everything for the first game so hopefully this isnt everything but from the snippets i saw, they showed a lot of setpieces and boss fights. More than there were in the first game.

Same.

I kinda regret watching this one.

"i think what gets me about this trailer is that people are excited and i just keep going like...that's just the beginning. You have no idea."

I know GAF doesn't like her since she's a hot woman that has a job, but since she's working on SSM she might know a bit more than we do.

And people that worked on the game say the same thing on twitter. This trailer is "nothing". So saying they spoil everything is weird. What story beat was spoiled? "Kratos will fight Thor"?You knew that since the last game ended. Even after the trailer we have no idea what's happening.

Not me. I love this woman and would let her give me AIDS. Yolo.

That said, I am not saying they spoiled everything, im saying Final Trailers of movies/games typically spoil everything which is why I dont watch them. Kojima is really bad at this. He literally spoiled the ending scenes of both MGSV and death stranding in the final trailers.

Hell, I even said they didnt spoil everything in the GOW 2018 trailers.

Exactly; the idea that SSM who is very anal about leaks, would voluntarily spoil large portion of a game with a trailer is weird idea to me. Ragnarok will undoubtedly be full of epic moments, so when time comes to market the game, what other choice do they have when damn near every scene can be classified as epic lol. They have to show something. It's a good complaint to receive as a developer i guess.

Side note, it was pretty cool to learn that Alanah was ranked top 1% writer in her country when she was younger. It's a shame certain type of garbage people try to delegitamize her qualifications as a writer/developer and it all comes down to their misogynistic views let's be honest.

People wonder why games take so long to make - because you are spending hours researching a fucking wolf for a single cutscene.

The trailer was great visually but writing in videogames is still thrash tier. Shame.

You're unsarastically complaining about this? This sort of attention to detail is the reason why I don't mind paying a premium for top quality games.

Trash writing? God of War? Yeah, you're a 🤡

still better writing than multi-billionaire rings of power serial tbh.

Also, thank god we have studios that poor money and time on these details, we have what? 1 maybe 2 games a year of this level?

Nope. Come GOTY time, folks will see that having an actual compelling story pushes games over the top. The story and characters in GOW will give it the edge over ER

Doesn't matter if it wins or not, God of War is my favorite franchise and it won't take anything away, but we need to set expectations.

Maybe in overall GOTY voting, but looking at VGAs Overwatch won over Uncharted 4, Sekiro won over Death Stranding and BOTW won over Horizon.

I think it will be neck and neck like 2018 when GOW went up against RDR2 and essentially split the awards.
There is nothing inherently special about Elden Ring.

It's just the same game which you've played for the past decade in an open world format.
And yet it got an insanely high metacritic and everyone treated like a second coming.

I find it absolutely hilarious that big franchises going open world just makes everyone lose their minds. Even though they end up suffering from the same open world jank, pacing and bloat as Ubisoft games everyone despises so much. BOTW and now Elden Ring getting ALL TIME GOAT praise is insane to me because i think both games are far worse in quality compared to their predecessors. Zelda lacks the dungeons and Elden Rings lacks the tight, focused and memorable design that made Bloodborne, DS and DS3 so great. It literally felt like an open world DS2 to me which is probably the worst insult I can level at the game.

I am not being edgy or controversial when I say that i have played better Ubisoft open world games than BOTW and Elden Rings. I wonder if these people have actually played Ubisoft, Sony and EA open world games because there is no way these games top some of the open world gems Sony and even Ubisoft have put out over the last couple of decades.

Open world allows developers to artificially pad the length of the game with useless shit and bloat.

I wouldn't mind open world as much if there wasn't so many useless fetch quests or item hunting or repetitive activities. Spiderman is notably bad in this regard. So much recycled garbage exists in that game.

I'm playing Cyberpunk 2077 at the moment and I'm enjoying it but it's all rather overwhelming. Who actually has time to complete the hundreds of activities in this game, unless this is a game designed to be played over a 6 month period?

Lot of people in this thread are coping so hard. Did I just witness some dude telling others to keep their positive opinions on this trailer in check? Get the fuck out of here.

Looks incredible. Bought a PS4 pro just for the first game and have never regretted it. And I'm about to order a PS5 for this one (unless it comes to PC idk?).
😂 Yep and he DM'd me because of my empathy reaction lol. I told him why people are hyped and they should be hyped after seeing this trailer. The game will be epic

Feel the same way about Elden Ring ...it suffers greatly from being open world and I'm not sure that what it brings to the table images up for it. 90% of the time I'm just wandering around killing trash mob enemies. DS, BB, and Sekiro were pretty much perfect in their combination of linearity and branching paths.

Which Ubisoft games though are better than Botw/Elden Ring? I don't know if I'd go that far ...actually? That was a good one. Origins? Was good until I realized how shallow some of its systems are ..

Origins, Unity, Far Cry 3, AC2, Brotherhood and Black Flags are all great open world titles. I wouldnt put their combat systems above Elden Rings, but as far as open world games go, they had all had a great open world that felt rewarding to explore. Combat was arcadey but way more fun than the basic combat in BOTW. Not to mention your weapons didnt break. Some of the games actually had a great story. Even in games that didnt have a good story, it was better than the non-existent stories in BOTW and Elden Rings.

But when it comes to the open world, what matters is how engaging it is, and BOTW just bored me to death. There is so little to do, its astonishing. Why the shrine puzzles werent used in the open world is beyond me. Thats why you have the open world so you can design stuff in it. Not in an underground bunker with balls and elevators that have nothing to do with the open world outside. Elden Rings is a better designed world but 90% of the time you are just killing trash mobs. How is that different from Horizon or Days Gone or Far Cry 3? Better combat system but its the same structure.

I just loved exploring Paris, Egypt, Carribean Islands, Rome and Venice. Those setting are phenomenal. In Unity, they had these hidden puzzles that were tied to various different historical locations in and around paris. I got insanely addicted to them because for the first time ever, every building in the open world felt like it had a purpose. Took me almost 30 hours to do all the puzzles and I felt like I had a PHD in Paris History, but it felt far more rewarding than of the puzzles in BOTW which were undoubtedly better designed but ultimately felt like tech demos divorced from the actual open world.

That’s pretty edgy

BOTW and Elden Ring succeed with the open world because they make it compelling, interesting, surprising, and rewarding to explore

Ubisoft design has none of that

Couldnt disagree more on rewarding. 90% of the time i opened a chest in Elden Ring or BOTW, it gave me an item i never ended up using.

Id rather the game give me currency and skill points I can use to deck out my Pirate ship with cannons and harpoons, or restore Rome to its former glory by renovating historical landmarks, or a way better upgrade system that doesnt force you to play the game for 30 hours before you can start to upgrade your character properly.

Sony gets it. Thats why they copied Ubisoft for their open world games rather than BOTW or whatever Elden Ring is trying to do. Zelda and Souls are simply not meant to be played for 100s of hours in one playthrough. Every level and every dungeon HAS to be rewarding because its much harder than ubisoft but because they had to spread out their rewards, they ended up dilluting the rewards and thus the sense of achievement.

As for whether they are more compelling,. interesting or surprising, if you found them that then great. I wont argue. I was thoroughly bored by both worlds. And mostly annoyed by Zelda's because of its constant rain, and survival mechanics.
