Resident Evil (Netflix series) teaser trailer revealed

I wholeheartedly agree, the show looks like a complete travesty. I'm not watching it, but I've watched plenty of reviews and snippets of it. That's enough. It literally looks and sounds like something that was originally made as its own series, but they knew it wouldn't stand on its own two feet. I mean, the dialogue is awful, the writing is fanfic level if that, it just seems like a bizarre throwaway. So they slapped Resident Evil onto it, and made some adjustments. A Resident Evil thing here, one there, etc. The name alone will make people watch it, unfortunately.

The real sad part are the people saying they liked it or really liked it. There's no hope for us, lmao.

I'm about to watch the last episode and all I'll say is....

There's lots of bad writing. A plot even in Episode 7 is literally WTF levels of nonsensical in terms of the lack of logic to make it happen. There are way too many pop culture references, many of the characters are badly written, etc. but...

I honestly can't say it's any worst than the Milla RE films. And I actually enjoyed those movies for their schlop and B-movie-ness, they're decent time-wasters. The only real differences between those and this are a more (visually) true-to-source Wesker casting and slightly better writing in the older films. And a couple lesbian kisses in this new one.

I do have eye damage, hence I use glasses.

But I don't suffer from severe brain concussion since I can see the difference.

Oh, how cute. Well the glasses might need a replacement.

Ethnicity is pretty important to lore I love.

To a point. I'm not so anal about it because when it comes to white characters or actors/actresses in works, you already have people who don't fit a character's absolute ethnic/cultural roots still playing said characters. Chris Hemsworth isn't Scandinavian, but he's playing Thor in Marvel movies. Mark Margolis isn't Mexican, but he plays Hector in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. If I were as anal about it as some of you, or if you were actually genuine about this type of stuff, you'd take up issue with that type of casting and so would I.

But you don't because even though you say it's about ethnicity, it's actually about optics and whatever you can take as passing off as resembling "close enough" to what is the source material, the ethnicity argument only gets brought up when there's too much a deviation. But by not actually enforcing that at a micro level, you just kind of perpetuate monolithic generalizing, ironically.

See, I don't necessarily have a completely anal viewpoint on it; ethnicity is important in casting up to the point where you can at least get someone who generally fits the look of the source material. Because if you go full anal and try getting people who 100% match the very specific ethnic backgrounds of certain characters, you're actually going to cut out a lot of "white" people from being able to play other certain "white" characters because I'm sure there'd be some folks upset with a Brit playing a German, or a German playing a Nord, etc.

OTOH, that doesn't necessarily matter with me, and unless a character's ethnic background is absolutely vital to their role in the story (such as a period piece), I can have some leniencies. Even in such a case where talking period pieces, I'm only particularly strict if it's a non-fictional work. Now don't take that to mean I'm saying we should get Constance Wu or Michael B. Jordan to play Napoleon; it just means if we're talking a pseudo-fictional story with Napoleon as a character in it, that's a pseudo period piece, I'm not so anal as to demand a French guy play Napoleon, or the French guy be short. He can be German, British, Italian, I don't care; those alone though won't mean they fit the aesthetic of Napoleon from a historical context so there's still that to take into account as well.

Which is why I saw you lumping in that 3rd girl in the Witcher post you made earlier a weird call-out, all things considered.

I'd also hate seeing a black lore character been played by a white guy. It goes both ways.

Okay, but I'm talking about the 3rd girl in the Witcher post you made lumping her in with the first two. Now, I don't know her ethnic background, she could be Latina, Middle Eastern, some sort of biracial black/white I don't know or even really care. I just know she looked pretty close aesthetically to the character she's meant to be playing, much closer than the first two, including down to skin tone.

Since the Witcher is a fictional story that's period-based (but not the same as being a period piece i.e based on actual real-world events in a real time period with real people), take into account what I just said earlier, and you can see I have a lot of leniency with her casting. And going by ratings and reviews, so do the vast majority of people watching the show 🤷‍♂️

So Netflix fucked up Witcher, Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, Resident Evil..anything else? Just add it to the pile.
Witcher is actually great. You can argue with the color change to the characters, but the character itself doesn't change. There one thing here and there that is not good, but even the games is not 1x1 to the books, so it's ok. Everything else is shit thou

@thread
Just finished, so let's put everything at it:
- pacing is fucking atrocious. Too many changes in scenes with the different timelines for no reason. Some stuff that could be rushed takes too long, some stuff that should take more time is rushed...
- 2022 basically has the best content because of Wesker. He is by far the best thing on it, and even has a plot twist that merges with the games. The girls stuff has dumb drama that doesn't really pay off - I know that is normal to have drama with teens, but it's not relevant in a Resident Evil show. Also, adult girls says that "that night" was when they separated from each other, but doesn't show... We need the next season to see they having a bigger fight?! Lazy writing
- 2036 bets more on the action stuff, which looks cool, but doesn't have real weight. You're presented with a character that is very distinct, aaaaaannnnnnd dead. Know how to kill, show. Also, Jade is too much overpower. Basically nothing happens to her. And too long for a "surprise show" of Billie that any person with less than 50 IQ could predict that
- some nods of the games like the background music, a typewriter in "a save room", secret passage, a puzzle... They're kinda great

The show really could be great. The overall story is actually nice and has Resident Evil justice on it. The problem is the bad writing, woke stuff and bad direction. You can't do five episodes that could easily be two at most. Character development is only relevant if helps the plot, not to follow themes. I hope Netflix listen to the fans of it - at least they fired a lot of woke people inside

When she jumped off that roof and landed on that car I knew the show was completely fucked.

There is blood way she survived like 14 years being such a dumb ass as she qas in that rabbit scene.

It's just stupid.

Why don't they just copy the games ....but we always say that kind of shit.

Makes the halo tv series look incredible by comparison.

Apart from the diverse casting and race swapping, how woke is this show?

Does it talk down to the audience? Does it find excuses to lecture us about racism in the west? Does it tell us how evil ypipol are?
One of the biggest themes to move the plot early on is animal activism and a character being vegan

I don't think any fan reception could even be taken seriously at this point the fanboyism regarding this series is never going to help in regards to any metrics because the way I see this any person that is a fanboy a properties like this generally seems to hate the very properties they're trying to tell people they like in the first place.

My friends and I always have a joke that the most hardcore Resident Evil fan hates every Resident Evil....

I'm so convinced at the ridiculous level of toxic hate regarding this mindset, I sincerely believe that if some of the fanfiction some of you guys were suggesting the show should have been about if it was actually about that you would just get another Fanboy arguing against some other Fanboys fanfiction.

In some of the Resident Evil groups I even jokingly copy and paste their own ideas into other threads just to watch them attacked the other person's idea and be like "leaked RE script" just to fucking prove some are not arguing for some logical or rational thing you're arguing for your own personal fan fiction in which the next fan will just attack anyway.....thus, I stopped caring about the views of religious zealot fanboys regarding series like this because the moment they just start trying to find any dumbass thing to cry about it's not feasible to take the view seriously any longer. Even I personally don't care for the RE films, but after so many years of this, I realize the source material is so fucking bad, its very, very hard to make a good RE title, as someone that plays the games quite a bit and reads all those files, it feels like its best fit for a novel or a book or something, then maybe a film or a show, so I get why they'd want to just do something new and use the series as a backdrop and even I suggested years ago that they just do that with like Outbreak or something.

Have a host of new characters, they are just dealing with the outbreak and be done with it. Zealots will cry over how Leon looks, the uniform looks, how he acts, what he says, nothing will be good enough with this fanfiction mindset, thus....just put a cast of new characters and move on lol

The fact that this show is ranked #1 on Netflix goes to show that RE zealots simply want fanfiction stuff, that has no relevance to if it will do good as a show or not. That must be separated and one must be able to remain objective regarding this shit, vs freaking out over every last button on some RPD uniform lol My sisters watched the show, they like it...my friends mom watched it.....she likes it, I don't know what to tell some of you as many seem to fall into this trap of "derrr I'm mad day didn't do da show like dis" and then start making it sound as if that is now the view of the majority. I've said this when Walking Dead FIRST came out.....you liking the fucking comic is irrelevant, you knowing that plot...irrelevant. NONE of that fucking shit will determine the show's success or failure or any of that shit and look at a decade later, this shit broke every major record for AMC. Not everything will fit the source material and as far as I'm considered, not everything needs to.

Will probably have some time later tomorrow to give some final thoughts on it after I finish the last 3 episodes or so.

edit. and the fact that anyone thinks The Witcher on Netflix failed or is ruined...the deep lolz. That show literally is up there with Stranger Things and Bridgerton in regards to viewership.

And I don't understand how you can defend this movie. Is this Playstation 1?

resident-evil-welcome-to-raccoon-city-2.jpg.webp

Again, WTF happened with Leon who is sleeping while a freackin horde is about to enter? Who gets fucking ridiculed by someone in prison, and that someone steals his gun!! W. T. F. How can you defend this seriously it is beyond my understanding.

Yeah, you mean like the games? Because let's be real here, RE has NEVER been incredible on the story side. It ranges from ok to complete nonsense.

Again, let's not pretend that RE is some kind of super smart, super well done story that takes itself 100% seriously:

Because Wesker Blade is here for about 2 minutes? So it's not really annoying while Leon is the fuckin hero of the last movie.

All in one this show is not specially good, but yeah it's the best live-action RE. And by a laaaaarge margin.
I defend the movie because at least tried to be a fair transposition of RE, though isn't exactly good. But compared this series? Goosh all the life the last movie. You literally scrutinize many details about the movie where I could agree (CGI, Lion character), but you give a free pass to the shitty scripting of the netflix show which become totally trash after the 4 episodes for unexplainable reasons because RE game hasn't ever had a good story? Forgive me but the series script was "fine" for me at the beginning, the hell it has to do the quality of RE game story with the trascendency of story in total garbage in the last part? And it's not just because Wesker Blade (though is the cherrypick of such moments) but the story is filled of absurdity, superficiality and contradictions in the last episodes which I can't describe without any major spoiler.

Tag, you're it.
Listen, I'm not saying the movie is perfect (far from it), but again - at least it TRIES to be Resident Evil. The Netflix show is not Resident Evil in any way, shape, or form. If I had to choose between a sequel to the film or another season of this shitshow (which is a very real decision that will be made in the coming months), I'd choose another movie 100x over, because at least the filmmakers would try to make a Resident Evil film instead of generic zombie show #1295.

Respecting or moving away from the games is not necessarily the criterion that will make a film or an RE series a success. The latest film seeks fidelity and fail miserably imo, there nothing to save.
The films with Milla Jovovich try, at least at the beginning, to follow the games a little. The first and the second remain not too bad even if a little ridiculous, and then it goes into shitshow in the other films.

So fidelity is not necessarily the deciding factor that will make a good or bad adaptation of RE, even if it is necessary to keep certain elements of course.
And not to mention that the games are not really shining with their writing, which can be VERY goofy too.

Read again my first reply:
"I found it not so atrocious" and "But the main problem of this series is its heroine who is as dumb as she is equipped with plot armor. From the moment she brought the zombie back on the boat you manage to predict EXACTLY the course of the episode. Honestly, how can she be so stupid. And this is the biggest example but there are many others. I hope she's dead (but I don't believe it, the plot armor deflected the bullet into her belly so that the evil twin didn't kill her)"

I wouldn't call that giving a free pass. And my conclusion is still the same: "In short, it's meh. At least we avoided the shitty level of the last movie."

Uh where I defending the movie. I just said it's better because the scripting of the Netflix series is so worse in the last part to prefer the movie. And in any case I liked the movie for almost 2/3 but not in the final part. Still I think it's a bit better than the Netflix series.
Oh another one who play with the semantic to show to own a superior opinion of the matter. Ignore list deserved.

Other than a certain teenage storyline in the Halo TV series, I thought it was pretty good even if it was non-canon. But this poop right here is just crap. And if it wasn't made for the fans of the games, why even call it Resident Evil. I guess for maybe the people that have watched the RE movies. Other than having zombies or whatever they're calling it and a character being Wesker in name only, what makes this an RE TV series.

It doesn't really follow any of the RE storylines or even come close to it.

Who are the people, and why, do they do this? There is zero justifiable cause. You could say money but how cheap is a licence to pump out this rot? It cant be cheap in itself..

Or is it?

This has to stop one day, surely.

As this is set YEARS or decades after the events of the first Racoon City getting nuked, and it's vacillating between two different time periods (before the global apocalypse and after), I'd say I like the adaptation.

That said... Frak young Jade Wesker! Everything bad that happened was her effing fault! Cute kid but DAAAAAAAAAAAANG is she a wet blanket and the dumbest idiot in the world! Her attitude was so dang hateful!

Young Billie was sweet at first but Jade's influence ruined her whole character! Adult Billie was straight up a conniving villain and I LOVED IT! But Young Jade was CRAP! Adult Jade was a maverick but her younger self was just... Poop!

Overall I liked it but I liked the future parts more. The teen versions were crap! They should have stuck to 2036 or whatever year it was. Not 2022.

That would explain why deaftourette likes it 🤣

Just now seeing this... I started my comment on page 3... Interesting.

I'm not watching the video because I can't hear right now. But why do you surmise that I like it?

And what was "woke" about it? I couldn't think of anything other than the 2 moms thing.

I agree with both outlets after finishing the show.

Very good and hype for season 2.

I've finished episode 6 of this and I can honestly say it's not as bad as some people are making it out to be. I've actually enjoyed it a lot more than some of the RE movies. Yes, it has some badly written characters and scripting and some scenes not make much sense but overall in the sea of Netflix TV shows this is far from the worst.

OK, I'm gonna tell my Mrs that ign and gamespot say its actually brilliant. So we will try again and finish the series but I just can not believe those reviews.

The lead is a fucking idiot that wouldn't last 5 minutes and unless it says she is some super hero injected with some shit there's no way...lol

I mean, wow I'm actually in shock it's getting good reviews from what I've seen.

At least their Transformers trilogy is great. Their Starscream actually sounds like Chris Latta.
I really don't understand how it's possible they didn't fuck it up. It's a fantastic nostalgia filled, acrion packed and lore respectable adaptations ever, not only on Netflix.
Then again, you literally can't race change the leads in this show and make them virtue signal veganism and non binary stuff, so lucky fans.

Gave it a shot but the first episode was really difficult to get through.

Felt like the protagonist should’ve died several times over in just that episode. Like, she’s hunted by a hoard right in the beginning, one gets hold of her and the rest just stop to stand in a circle and watch her fight that one zombie..

Very bad first episode imo, doubt I’ll continue.

Edit:
Oh and this scene it's another gem:

Parks And Recreation Reaction GIF

Is this an actual scene? Kinda feel bad for the actress that’ll have that shitshow on her resume forever.

100% confirmed I won’t continue watching after seeing that.. But I’ll gladly have some of whatever they’re smoking over at Netflix.

The laziest fucking thing about this shit pile is that once again zombies = apocalypse.

Why?

Why the same boring crap yet again?

There’s no real reason a zombie outbreak would lead to Armageddon. The games realise this, as does Shaun Of The Dead.

But these lazy fucking hacks with more money than sense just shit out the same old stuff, only with a high budget.

And there’s the real issue. Netflix have too much money and care too little for talent, and just want to churn out more and content to fill out their streaming platform. Just like Disney Plus, Prime Video, and the rest.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I'm not a fan of race changing the characters tbh, it's like are they trying to push an agenda.

I don't care if whatever race they started out to be but suddenly changing them to another race for the sake of "appealing" isn't good imo. It just adds confusion.

After the reception its getting, its looking like its going to get canceled similar to cowboy bebop. I'd be shocked if there will be a season 2. No sane person would green light the second season .

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
So Netflix fucked up Witcher, Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, Resident Evil..anything else? Just add it to the pile.
The Dragon's Dogma anime was... Something.

I mean, I had a bit of fun watching it because each chapter is just an excuse to have the Arisen fighting some monster from the game. But the anime itself had almost nothing to do with the game, and the CGI animation is something I'd like to ban from any animated series from now till the end of times. Shit sucks.

1 and a half ep in :
Jade is unsufferable, Billie not so much but maybe it is just she has it worst, getting beat up and all...
The bully angle had me flabbergasted, the loner girl who looks lesbian as fuck being in fact a goddam bully and a generally horrible human being is kinda hilarious. Even though it serves (i guess) to show Lance Wesker "ruthlessness" (the principal's office scene), it is weird to see this character, who is introduced being shunned by the others (which have been characterized as dummies - I think Jade says "cute but dumb", like the judgemental cunt she is, after introducing herself to the neighbros -) being a violent douchebag with school shooter vibes. It is not woke at all...

The animal activist storyline is a bit woke but in a 15 years old discovering activism way, not a full on antifa rethoric dumbness so it didn't bother me.
I guess it is that way the virus spread and if true it is a bit dumb but not more than a lot of other netflix shows and it is believable, as the girls are 15 year old white girls with white girls problems - metaphorically speaking -

The post apocalyptic scenes have a janky quality to them i kinda like, but i kinda liked Van Helsing too so it might be just my bad taste.

Tl ; dr :
Overall it can be enjoyable if you like post apocalyptic jank and teen drama.
There also is enough stupidity to have a good laugh, and judging by Ailynn Ailynn 's gif (spoiler alert :messenger_hushed:) there is plenty more to come !

Edit : i was only one and a half ep in not 2
