Can’t Git Gud

Oh wow. Looks so good now. I wonder what they did.
I don’t like the game but that was one of the problems. I was totally fine playing in 4k mode but even it shimmered a lot.

So wtf. Why did it take them so long. I wasted my first play through

More proof that buying games day 1 is for suckers.

This comes as a big surprise to me, I didn't expect Guerrilla to completely fix the issue, to be honest. And after 13 patches it was clear that fixing the shimmering wasn't as simple as doing some minor tweaking to resolution or AA, there was clearly something else going on there.

It's too late for me since I've already finished the game and I won't be playing it again anytime soon but I'm happy that they finally fixed it.

Huge difference. Disabling most of the foliage sway in performance mode is a good trade-off. The whole screen does still go slightly darker when I move the camera, I thought they will address that as well but the overall picture quality is so much better.

I think I'll play some more this weekend as I left the game with tons of side content unfinished.

I'm ready for the DLC :) after this and Elden Ring I need a shorter game that's not so intense. Gonna Platinum UC4 using cheats for unlimited ammo!

Well i've finished Elden ring some time ago and after a few weeks of cooldown i'm looking for the next big AAA to play... :messenger_beaming: perfect !

Testing out the performance mode on my PS5 now and it looks significantly better, cannot notice any shimmering.

EDIT : Holy shit, this looks way better.

EDIT 2 : I'm losing my shit over how good this game looks, just wow!!!

This is why I hardly ever play games at launch. Wait a few months and you get a much better experience.

I bought it day 1 and was waiting for that patch...
Now they tell me they gonna add a 40 Fps mode? Jesus...I guess I have to wait another few weeks :D

as i previously said, 40 fps mode is a simple 1/3 vsync toggle on 120 hz screens. its not rocket science, unlike some people would have you believe, to the extent that claiming only studios like "imsomniac" can deliver 40 fps modes or something

I wish DF reached out to GG for some answers, but I don't think they will.
it is simple, their TAA only used 1 previous frame for anti aliasing. normally, other AAA games use all frames rendered in a second to give temporal anti aliasing its juice. this was always known. go check out horizon zero dawn, you will notice its not quite aggresive with its TAA. lots of jaggies and shimmers, but a sharp representation overall.

GG wanted a sharp, clean look on their games, now they've backed out. I'm sure game became noticably blurrier with more frames to feed to TAA.

TAA is practically =
less frames you feed it, more shimmer and sharper, clean image quality
more frames you feed it, minimal shimmer and aliasing, but blurrier, muddy image quality

edit: maybe they also bundled an aggresive sharpening filter. waiting for review vids

At the time it was a safe bet to buy the game day one, no one knew we were going to get a crappy 60 FPS mode. GG are up there with Sony's best first party studios, all of which have delivered on the technical quality of their games.

It will make me a little more cautious in the future but regardless games like GOW Ragnarok are day one purchase for me.

Outside of Rockstar games most open world games can only wish to release in the state this game first released tbh.

Agreed, certain visual implementations like the 60 FPS mode and other bugs needed more time in the oven, but it was still a very well rounded game. I brought the first week and I played through its entirety without any issues.

Certain posters tried claiming it was because of hardware limitations, but this fix proves sometimes it's more about developer time and workload.

For people who say that hdr is improved, do you have the vanilla settings or the one who everyone used when the game launched with kinda shitty hdr?

Thanks Digital Foundry for the input !
Yeah thanks to Dictator dickhead who already downplayed such patch in the era forum lol. He said it's just a sharpening filter. This guy is fucking moron every time talking about something relative to Sony. Hope Jhon make a video update about it and not him. Anyway I can finally buy it. Day one is confirmed again as a mistake and not worth it.

This looks absolutely insane now in Performance Mode. I'm in the State of Play area and there's a shit ton of wind and moving foliage all over the place and volumetric fog everywhere. HDR also got improved. Image is much cleaner but also sharper.. just a wonderful update.
If Battaglia really said it's just a sharpening filter that's the dumbest and most blatantly false shit i've ever heard.

However i think one thing they had to tone down in order to achieve this are clouds. They are as sharp as ever but they don't look volumetric anymore.. but it may be the area i'm in.

Edit---

Nah, was just a TOD thing. Clouds are the same.

New useless trophies again... *urgh*
Play through the whole game 1 more time... riiiigggghhhhhtttt.

These replay game trophies for these huge games is just the devs making fun of people who like trophies.

Agreed.

Jokes aside with Dicktator, it's substantial improvement, the shimmering hasn't just gone, the image looks a lot cleaner and sharper overall, to attribute this improvement to a mere sharpening filter sounds wrong.

Not just that, HDR is better (also in the SDR presentation, highlights are no longer clipping) and the most awful aspect of Performance Mode, the only real issue i had with it, is completely GONE now. I'm referring to those obvious and hideous drastic resolution drops in certain areas and cutscenes. Now the ones i checked look absolutely perfect, same IQ everywhere.

Not sure what the hell Guerrilla have done, but saying this Patch is a night a day difference may be an understatement.

Did they also remove the sway in Fidelity mode? That's pretty rough looking at the videos the world looks pretty stagnant by comparison. Didn't really notice it much while playing earlier but in the video comparison its a massive difference.

They didn't remove the sway, nor in Performance Mode nor Fidelity, as when there's wind foliage go absolutely crazy.
I remember reading they changed things in this regard, but long before this patch in an attempt to reduce shimmering.

What?! 😳

You"re just joking, right? Please tell me you're joking.

Edit----

Oh, shit! You weren't joking... 🤦‍♂️

Thats why you cant take them seriously. They are no experts. They dont know anything. Just garbage talking. Like most Gaming Journalists.
I played 2 hours now, and its more then just a sharpening. Maybe its jus DRS, i dont know. Whatever they done, its heavily noticeable.

Just started NG+. I played the game in performance mode, because while the shimmering was certainly noticeable and distracting, I still kind of tuned out of it after a while. The added responsiveness made up for it. But now - zero issues WRT image quality, it looks incredible. I don't know how Guerrilla pulled it off, but my hat's off to them.

I'm not following. How/where is the game more blurry with the new TAA implementation? The game is the cleanest its ever looked. Can you give example?

Too bad I Platinumed it just a couple of weeks ago, I’ll have to wait for the DLC to try it out extensively.

Shit. Literally just finished this game a week back, after putting near 100 hours into it, and getting the platinum. Need a break from it now, so won't be returning any time soon.
