Brad, Vinny, and Alex all leaving Giant Bomb

Dan Rykert did a half decent job at filling the massive hole left from Ryans passing. When he left it has slowly bled out. GB used to be so fucking fun man. I was a loyal follower since gamespot days and only stopped listening to the pod when ben and abby joined and managed to ruin both coasts.

It hurt when I cancelled my sub a year or so ago. Wish the best for Brad, Vinny and Jeff. Alex can go fuck himself lol.

You can see it in Jeff's eyes, he knows this is the end.

Some months ago a guy on Twitter told Gerstman that he thinks he is sick of games and it shows on GiantBomb. Jeff and some others attacked it, but honestly, it's probably true, it's been easy to see if you compare how he was early on with GiantBomb/GameSpot and how he is now. He barely plays new games at all, he got nothing to say about the industry or games anymore cause he's barely follows it. I remember some of those game of the year shows, he had barely touched any of the games, and if he did, he only played it a little bit. You just can't be disconnected from the industry like that when you are supposed to be a journalist.

I enjoyed their launch extravaganzas for the respective consoles. Always good marathons and they always (used to, at least) tell it like it is.

When Kyle Bosman left EZA it was the same thing, just not interesting anymore.

We still don't know why he did as Covid hit before he could move on to a project and has been back a few times since

Oh man this is wild news. Also kind of wild that Jeff Bakalar just joined a few weeks ago, and now this? That's gotta suck for him.

It's sad, while it hasn't been my favorite podcast in a good long while, I did still enjoy Beastcast.

The writing was on the wall. GB never leaned into the pivot post-sale and post-covid. At the time, it was business as usual while the fringes faded away.

This looks like the start of a reinvent which is probably their smartest move. Just need to wait until Jeff's contractual obligations expire before he joins whiskeymedia2.0

One can dream this is the case. If they do it. I hope it’s just the old dudes/similar dudes. I dont need an abby or ben ruining the laid back fun vibes.

Good. To be honest, those guys all need fresh starts because their content was getting more stale and detached by the day — especially the stone faces during E3 keynotes. At times, it was abysmal.

I think they’re all much better off with new ventures, at this point.

Like a lot of people, Giant Bomb was a huge part of my gaming diet for years. I really loved them, and they sounded like a bunch of friends - of which I was somehow included - talking about games, the way people used to before social media took over and everything became a grift.

But, they lost their way after Ryan Davis died. Abby and Ben were hideous hires who added absolutely nothing to the show, and they dismissed any criticism of Abby as gamergators swarming her, rather than acknowledging that they'd fucked up, she knew absolutely nothing about games, and she was there to the detriment of everyone around her.

The point at which I left them behind was the GOTY deliberation where Abby essentially forced 'Dream Daddy' into the top 10, based on absolutely fuck all other than her repeated claims that it was 'very good' and 'cohesive'. It was a run of the mill VN - the idea that it was a better game than Nier Automata is utterly laughable. But, Giant Bomb went along with it as though this was entirely fine and normal. For me, it shattered my trust in them - if they aren't willing to defend gaming as an art form, and were willing to capitulate that quickly to clear nonsense, why bother with them at all? This was all compounded by Gerstman's ridiculous statements on Kingdom Come: Deliverance - claiming that they were not reviewing it because 'the audience isn't interested' was so transparently a piece of ass-covering to defend whatever it was in them that needed to uphold the Klepek/Walker political position that was already infecting the rest of games media.

But, really, the thing that killed them slowly is the thing that is killing all of criticism. The idea that people should be paid for their 'opinions' is a dying model. Ultimately, if you're not invested in the personalities of these people, who gives a shit what any of them think? Is Brad Shoemaker REALLY more qualified to declare a game 'good' than anyone else? We aren't living in an age where opinions are at a premium, and they are offered by eminent experts in their fields - Kael and Ebert in cinema, for example. Opinions are now a dime a dozen, coming at you from every direction. What makes THESE opinions worth anything? Nothing. That's what.

So, they leaned into the 'personality' stuff. And, they've certainly got huge traction by building an audience around the people, rather than the opinions. But, that's not journalism. That's social media. And in a media environment that is saturated with people desperate to be social media stars through Youtube or Twitch, Giant Bomb's act became stale and increasingly irrelevant.

I like Gerstman quite a bit, despite his ludicrous buffoonery over the years. My hope is that if GB continues, or he builds something new out of the wreckage, he's able to capture some of that economy of expertise - rather than just opinion for the sake of it - and returns to actual journalism, rather than pursuing social media cred, and ass pats from his woke buddies in the San Francisco gaming industry. But, I have my doubts that it will happen.

They did make my drive to work infinitely better back in the day though, so I have to thank them for that.

Sad news. I let my sub lapse this past January. Their content quality and quantity had really taken a nose dive the past two years so it isn't surprising. With "everyone" leaving at once, it feels like they probably have a new venture in the works. Or maybe they just fulfilled their contractual obligation and are taking a break until Jeff fulfills his. Best of luck to them.

Jeff Bakalar didn't technically join GB but got a role that meant he was more closely aligned to their gaming division (content development and strategy).

I mean, are there real journalists anymore?
do people really go to websites to read reviews?
I just see a load of twitch streams and people who scroll down to see a score, meta critic and open critic of people who have been given codes and it’s all hollow really...

...I might be On a bit of a downer.

Sad news but ultimately good news. I've been listening to some 2010 Bombcasts recently and they used to be SO GOOD, but Giant Bomb has been a husk of itself for several years now and badly needed putting out of its misery.

I hope Brad, Vinny and Alex find a safe harbour somewhere.

People don't want real journalists now.

Real journalists say things you don't want to hear. They cover things you're not interested in. They report on the opinions of many players in a given story - some with opinions that you will agree with, others with opinions that you will find abhorrent and immoral. They are slow, and methodical, and their reporting isn't always sexy, or funny, or even entertaining. They build stories one piece at a time, and often contradict themselves as new information emerges. And, they aren't the center of the story - they are the teller, and are not players on the stage.

Most of all though, real journalists cost money. They cost YOU money. And, no. Not Patreon sub money, or Twitch donations, or whatever forms of digital panhandling we've all convinced ourselves are now acceptable. Real journalists require you to buy magazines, or newspapers, and to watch broadcasts with advertising. They require funding and investment from their audience.

So, no. There are no real journalists anymore. They are in the box in your dad's garage along with music that you pay for, movies that you see in cinemas, and people who are famous because of their talent and not their personalities.

Interesting that the last Official Playstation Magazine was published the same week Giant Bomb imploded though.

Is this the end of an era?

Jeff's probably known this is the end since the acquisition. He just has contractual and professional obligations to uphold.

I don't really think it's fair to say Jeff is sick of games either. It's really, really hard to watch something you've poured a chunk of your life into fall apart and die a slow death. Sprinkle in a somewhat recent marriage and having kids, his priorities in life had to change. The cherry on top is the pandemic in the mist of trying to keep the ship afloat long enough so that all of his friends can escape. Lack of excitement for video games is probably pretty low on the list of things for his current disposition.

I don't think Jeff has ever handled criticism particularly well, but I guess I can understand with how unfounded a lot of that criticism can be.

It must be almost impossible to generate interest in their site with so much youtube videogame content out there. I used to watch and listen to them years ago but if I want video content I just find someone who is playing the game I like and watch some of their videos, the quality that is produced is equal to what giant bomb produced.
To be honest, I kind of lost interest when Vinny moved out east and Ryan died. I hope they are leaving for something better though, I don’t wish for people being forced out of a job.

I'll sub to Jeff on twitch playing old games and cleaning out his garage.

As I found out myself with my football career, sooner or later you just age out of shit. Gaming is a young mans passion. I'm 45 now myself and my gaming time is a fraction of what it was now I have a wife and family of my own. What we are seeing is the first wave of videogame podcasters age out.

They did great making a career out of there passion, and there stature and resume in the gaming industry will stand them in good stead I'm sure.

I'm not really talking about the current moment, I can understand he got a lot on his plate right now, but more during the last few years. He was great back in the days, but he seems to spend his days playing retro games from the 1920s and I rarely ever do I hear him talking about current games beyond the odd comment here and there. I remember they talked about Death Stranding and he didn't bother trying it, and thinking man, if you are a journalist aren't you sort of obligated to at least try it? to stay informed? there are tons of games like that where he doesn't give a shit. It seems like he stopped having an interest beyond casual years ago, and it's reflected on the site. You can visit GiantBomb without really knowing it's a game site, it's really strange, no wonder they struggle to get a new audience.

"I've spent a lot of the last year thinking about what's next for Giant Bomb and most of those roads lead to a full-on rethink of what it means to be a Website About Video Games in 2021. While I certainly would have loved to solve these challenges with my longtime friends and coworkers by my side, it just wasn't meant to be. I wish Vinny, Alex, and Brad the best. Meanwhile, we have a pretty exciting opportunity to broaden our horizons, rethink every facet of our operation, and get to a place where we're truly able to build that bomb all over again... or die trying."

"There is a collective vision for what the future of Giant Bomb is and it involves both familiar and new faces. We're already in talks with creators so that we can begin the next chapter. We're fully aware that this marks a big change and we're using this as an opportunity to rethink what this site is. It's a chance to introduce new personalities from different backgrounds and explore categories and topics that we never have before."

GB been dead for about 2 years now.
The content was amazing up until 2015. After abby and ben came in, it all went to shit. Drew left etc. Dan was amazing to fill in Ryan void but Abby destroyed him
They even got sjw crazy and were banning people for whatever. me including and I've been subbed since day1

I wonder why. Did Jeff really turned into a terrible person? or covid?

GB used to be 100% of my online game coverage back in the day, no one could touch them. It's too bad they lost their passion after Ryan and showed us all their embarrassing political side.

I'll watch Vinny's next thing but honestly the rest of the crew are a bit of a downer to me now.

Sarcasm?

Or one of those tiktok trends : "say you haven't been paying attention for the last 2 years without saying you haven't been paying attention for the last 2 years."

Vinny is the best, Brad is okay, Alex can live in a cardboard box for all I care.

Not that the site was going downhill, that was obvious. But that those three would be gone this quick without warning is surprising yes.

That's what makes Jeff so good to me though. Maybe because I'm in my 40s too but no one else out there is playing dig dug who has the knowledge and reference that Jeff does. Plus it's inhuman to expect every one to play every major release when games are so big now. When death stranding released there were literally a hundred thousand people covering the game. Only Jeff was playing california games on the C64.

Cause he had other people covering it and think he thought it was a Kojima arse Kojima game (not in necessarily bad way) but if you think it's a badly edited game then you are probably less likely to play it for fun.

Uh. There is an entire industry of retro gamers playing 8bit games from classic computers. Retro Asylum on Youtube, Kim Justice, Retro Gamer magazine, The 8bit Guy, Sprite Castle, 8bit Show and Tell.. frankly, there are people who are infinitely more knowledgeable out there producing extremely interesting stuff about the classic era. I'm roughly the same age, and I'm a classic 8bit collector, so I can tell you that if you're looking for that kind of stuff, there's a huge amount of it out there. If anything, Jeff Gerstman is one of the least interesting retro content creators.

I mean, look at stuff like this:

It was the easy go to during the basement days and when they were sold to CBS but after Ryan passed it was always on the decline. Jeff is pretty smart, but shown being stuck in your ways and relying on boring old game talk wore itself out. Also, praise for burning down cities and harming people maybe not a good idear.
