PlayStation Says It Was a MLB's Decision to Put MLB The Show 21 on Xbox GamePass at Launch

It's funny. It's like this new dick measuring contest to show how much money they have. I, for all intents and purposes where my gaming habit is concerned, can get whatever I want when I want. Game Pass allows me to save more money while at the same time getting and playing whatever I want when I want. That's a good thing. But I almost enjoy seeing the hostility people have towards the success of Game Pass. "Glorified rental service" lmao.
I cant wait for Sony to release their bumped up PS Now v2 tier, and see their reactions.

Everyone knows Sony is going to do something more aggressive to the current PS Now service. Just a matter of when and what and how much.

Sony’s answer to game pass, specifically day one third party game pass, should be threaten to delist the game from the PlayStation store like they did cyberpunk and not allow it be published on PlayStation, meanwhile send out messages telling their audience not to buy games that are day one on game pass. I’m serious. These publishers want to give their game away to people who never cared about it to begin with but PlayStation gamers have to pay? Call these publishers bluff and watch them fall in line.

Oh sure, I will love to see Playstation chasing its partners away and tell them to go Xbox/PC and possibly Switch too.

I mean... just let the MLB choose whatever developer they want.

Put the Sony team to make something else.

This isn’t as easy a thing to do as you might think.

The staff at SDS have worked on this for years - they don’t want to see their work thrown in the garbage because of corporate politics.

I actually think Sony would be better off offering to sell the rights, the code base and the studio to a multiplat publisher - EA, 2K, someone suggested Konami - and let the staff choose how they want to proceed. They can go with the studio or transfer to another Sony studio. Create a new San Diego office if necessary.

Writing code and creating content isn’t like making burgers - each object is the creation of someone and not everyone is prepared to just see it destroyed after years of effort.

What makes you think they aren’t?

MLB did the deal but their contract with Sony includes a revenue split much the same as it will for mtx income post launch.
Where did you read that there's a revenue split ?

I don’t get why everyone is making this into a big deal.

Game pass is a paid rental service, it’s not like this game is free on Xbox. Also for those true baseball fans, they were most likely going to pay the $60-$70 to own the game anyway.

This is MLB the show, not God of War or Last of us .....😆

Spiderman video game license with Marvel still. So im hoping MS drops that big cash infront of Disney and then force Sony to let Spiderman go multiplatform and then in GP. Now ofc PS fanboys will say that will never happen but they say it will never happen for many things and then that happens lol.

Now after this any non Sony ip can go anywhere. Power of dollar is very Strong.

Sony owns movie rights to Spiderman. Part of the deal with marvel was to create exclusive games on their platform in exchange for mcu movies

No official source has ever said this. And we have seen Spiderman appear in games since then on other systems like ultimate alliance 3.

yes, spiderman is on other systems. but sony owns all movie rights to spiderman. It's a no-brainer marvel gave them that deal.

I didn’t read it anywhere... where did you read there isn’t one? Ok so we got that out of the way, let’s return to using our brains and considering what is a normal relationship between publisher and developer.

The relationship between a publisher and dev studio is clear. The publisher gets a cut - 30% usually but MLB isn’t a really publisher in this case so I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s less.

Let’s remember here, Sony are the market leaders for AAA gaming. MLB are the franchise holders for a stagnating pro sport that is losing market share to NFL and NBA - they’ve got very close to no experience compared to Sony in this market. Which do you think is going to be better at setting up a video game publisher/developer relationship?

There is never a case where a publisher takes 100% of revenue for a product.

Oh and there’s mtx which Sony also get a split on.

Oh and then there’s the fact Sony is doing the marketing and promotion of the product on Xbox.

MLB aren’t in a position to do anything without Sony’s approval.

"as part of the goal for this year’s game, MLB decided to bring the franchise to more players and baseball fans."

Why not put it on PS+ then?

Sony is trying to make money with their stuff (and is succeeding).

MS is losing money right now with these deals hoping to sting their customers at some point in the future.

So that’s why this happens.

Having said that I think Sony should happily bank MS’s cash and then give this game either on PS+ or play at home. MS has paid for it, the mtx bump alone would be worth it for Sony I suspect.

Major Leagues Baseball trying to give leverage to Xbox just because Xbox is American brand ( well tbh Sony is partly now ) and ignoring Sony San Diego Studio contribution of making AAA baseball game

Without Sony San Diego all you got left is shitty RBI baseball

Shame on you major league

Sony should’ve countered and send the game straight to PS+ smh!

Sports games are obsolete after a year, these games should be the ones people only play on GamePass.
And made no money off the game? Yeah good business plan

MLB is the publisher. As people have hinted, Sony got squat from MS.

This Gamepass controversy has given this game the most successful PR campaign ever in the history of baseball games. Millions will play it day 1 just to see what all the fuss is about. Me included! 👌

It’s really one of the best sports simulations available. Of course that doesn’t help if you don’t like baseball in the first place! In fact it probably makes it worse because this isn’t an arcade version of baseball.

Oh and it can be a tough game to get good at - it’s timing and coordination for batting and at the higher levels it’s just as frustrating as the real thing. Expect a lot of At Bats to just end up as groundouts, fly outs or just strike outs. That’s the price of playing a sim - it reflects all the great parts but all the boring parts too...

But it’s definitely worth a look. It’s usually got great graphics too but this year supporting a lot more platforms and at the beginning of a gen I don’t think it’ll be much of graphical boost over last gen.

Harding-Rolls believes Microsoft paid a steep fee for MLB The Show 21 to sweeten the deal for MLB and Sony.

A swing and a miss for you lol
No miss for me at all. More like a HR.

I've been saying from the beginning Sony got paid big to do multiplat. And if Harding-Rolls is right, I was right too the whole time.

It's other people who think since MLB is the publisher working with MS, Sony got the short end of the stick where MLB hoarded all the MS money.

There's gamers out there who think MLB iron fisted Sony so much, Sony was forced to do a multiplat, had no say in GP, and got nothing extra in return because Sony is so desperate to keep the license.

Right there in the article you didn’t read.
Yeah I read it, it doesn’t say they paid substantial sum. It’s says even if they did it would be worth it. All in the wording

the strange thing is, the time Sony was developing the game on multi platforms, they kept quiet or never tried to make a deal?

only when shit hits the fan, they put out such weak statement?
at least keep it of GP to equal the playing field.

imo losing MLB in this manner is embarrassing, but what's worrying is sony's non-reply or response. they just sat on it and did nothing then or now. 🤷‍♀️

Is it still beneficial for Sony to hold the rights to MLB, rather than allowing anyone to license? In other words, is the money SONY makes off GamePass/Xbox worth it? How did SONY sign a contract where MLB dictates what consoles the licensed product will be released on? Dumb legal counsel?

I think it was a license renewal condition: either you develop an Xbox version too or we do not give you the license period.

If Sony make money off the game does it matter? Sony wanted to keep the rights so the conditions were met. It isn’t a bad deal for Sony. They knew what they were getting into and they know what money they will make

Totally.

It doesn't even matter if Sony got a ton of money to do multiplat or were forced to do it for free. None of us know the details and never will.

Either way, they agreed to do Xbox.

So it shows regardless of the contractual extremes, they green lit it at Sony HQ since it was still worth doing.
