People with fringe opinions can't understand why a lot of people like something they hate. Go figure. Seems like a worthy winner, given how the events of the game rustled jimmies so hard. I still think AC deserved the win for its impact on socio-political events during the pandemic, but TLOU2 definitely made people feel some kind of way about its story. A good story isn't just one that goes the way you want it to. I didn't play the game, but wasn't under the impression that the story was bad. Just that it took an unexpected turn, and forced gamers to come to terms with a moral conundrum.

The Rise of Skywalker had all the feel good fanservice that delivered desired outcomes, but it wasn't a good story by any stretch of the imagination. Sometimes, diverting expectations can be a good thing, even if it thrusts you into the position of following the story arc of someone you now despise, in order to fully appreciate some of the decisions said character had to make earlier on. This is one of the few PS4 games I would consider playing when I get a PS5, as I never got a chance to finish the first game, so never developed the same close attachment some gamers had developed.

Ghosts did win. It won the only thing that matters, which is popular fan vote. With the way the industry is today, it's not a surprise TLOU2 won, despite being mixed reviewed vs. Ghosts, which received universal praise.
False.

GoT had way more mixed reviews than TLOU2.

The GOTY according to 95 outlets with maybe at least half of them infested with woke twitter people, go figure.

Ars Technica
Easy Allies
Engadget
Entertainment Weekly
Gamespot
Giantbomb
The Hollywood Reporter
Kinda Funny
What's Good Games
LA Times
Newsweek
Polygon
The Verge
Venturebeat
Vice
Touch Arcade
Wired

And that's only from the US. Such a perfect GOTY in 2020 I guess.
What's being woke got to do with thinking the game was the best of the year?
I'm not woke,lol.....I'm 47 years old and pretty conservative thinking when compared to all those reviewers.

I believe all these TLOU2 did best than others games.
Narrative is pretty good... which other game this year had better narrative?
Audio is perfection and a huge part of the gameplay.
Abby performance really shined in the game.
Accessibility has a big focus something that 99% of the games don't even care.
The GOTY need to be the best in it own genre category.

I would believe your personal opinion more than these outlets though, that's the thing. Large parts of them are a fucking joke in games department news and reviews. Getting in season with 2020 climate sure does wonders.

I'd have given best Action/Adventure to Ghost of Tsushima just to let it have that recognition....as a going on an adventure type experience I thought it was better than TLoU II.....but I agree with all those other award wins....game was best of the year on many levels for me.

3rd person action games get most of the rewards all the time. Considering that it's basically Sony's specialty - they win all the time basically.
Regarding TLOU2 it was bound to win - from the point of view if the game - aside questionable parts - it is a good game with emotion, story driven narrative - just what critics love - but not my cup of tea.

I understand that way of thinking but it feels weird.
You give GOTY to game A but the genre best game to game B never sounded reasonable (a lot of awards shows did that).

The GOTY game should at least win the genre award to be GOTY imo.

Imagine a RPG being the GOTY but losing the best RPG award.

I've never experienced so much emotion from a single game. Glad it won. I know when I replay it I'll be stopping after Ellie releases all the prisoners. I won't be able to proceed further than that.

Right now, I want a Part 3 on the PS5, but to serve as the closing chapter for the series.

And, of course, Ellie as the central character, with some more flashbacks of Joel if possible.

Yea,you're not wrong,lol.
If TLoU II does fit the Action/Adventure genre then it should win that award too....I'm just going off my own experiences with the games...GOT felt like a grand adventure to me,more so than TLoU II.

Yeap... in your case GoT should win both for GOTY and the genre award.
I don't think they have a separated genre award for action and adventure... maybe that is a issue.

I think that's why more people could actually finish the game, I mean full able people lol. Totally finished the game with cheats.
Honestly if they're gonna put "accessibility" like that, might as well just do it like Nier Automata did and allow the game to play itself. At least it looks cool.

Truly redefines the term "Interactive Movies". Maybe in Part 3 we only need a button press to get to the ending.

Congrats to ND.

I personally didn't enjoy the game as much as I thought I would (and it wasn't for a lack of hype either, only $60 release I bought this year), and for me it was a big disappointment. But at least on a technical level it was really amazing

I actually think that's still better than story driven games with shoved-in mechanics that not only aren't fun but also directly contradict the story.

Ellie: *Murders countless of people and dogs in the most violent and gory ways possible* -> "Totally fine, let me flirt with my girlfriend a bit"

Also Ellie: *Beats some random dudete in a cutscene with a pipe* -> "Literally can't stop shaking, i got ptsd"

Best Innovation in Accessibility

what is that about?
Game offers alot of accessibility options, for ppl that might have disabilities. Thers a colorblind mode that changes the color of the game for example, and alot of options that make the shooting gameplay much more easy like auto target.

One of the ones i used was the ability to change subtites size and color, or add the character name in front of the subtitles. I hate when console games think im playing in front of a monitor and come with micro subtibles that are impossible to read.

I don't even understand what comments like this are saying should you just be in a constant state of shock and sorrow over the things she has to do? Or does she ever get to have a normal life.

Just strange that she decided that specific moment to be shocked at her actions, and not when when she smashed-in the head of three guys right before or exploded that girl and her dog with a pipe bomb.
I guess its the old video game ultimatum where whatever happens outside cutscenes doesn't count.

No I am not saying everything, but all of those full 10s with reviews and stuff like that. It was obviously same with GTA IV, hell even Cyberpunk it's really weird at it's scores. With bugs and all of that shit involved.

Truly just a nitpick. Plenty of games, good ones included, suffer from similar problems.
However this is such a common and talked about issue when discussing storytelling in videogames, that i sure would expect this "Game of the year" and "Best narrative" awarded game to have addressed properly.

Well, if we were to talk about the true problem with this game, that would be that Druckmann has no fucking clue how people work. Twitter is probably his best reference for human behavior.

I don't know maybe you should tell me what you think should have won best narrative or whatever of the year then, ill have fun picking it to pieces

The Only goty that matters is the one given by audiences.

Yet, does anyone expected a different outcome?

For narrative, can't say for sure since i haven't really seen the story of all the other nominees.
But I can already tell that a title like 13 Sentinels has much more well-developed story-line. Hades could also be an interesting pick, not because of the story itself but because of how it managed to properly merge storytelling with such a "gamey" genre like rogue-like, quite impressive feat as far a narrative in games go.

Deserved. Maybe the best game on the last-gen. I'm glad it won GOTY and many other awards. I would have maybe given the best performance award to Ashley Johnson instead of Laura Baley but they were both great.

GoT had way more mixed reviews than TLOU2.

You should be embarrassed for running to Metacritic to say it isn't mixed reviewed, when this game is easily one of the most divisive of its time. Some people love it (you clearly like riding Neil's dick), while others don't. Hell, check this thread and how voting is nearly 50/50 lol

The fact you chose to act like it was a "gotcha moment" shows how insecure you are about your experience. TLOU2 fanboys might just be gaming's Rick and Morty fanbase at this point. I have respect for those who liked it and enjoyed it, but being this obnoxious over one title is saddening.

...despite being mixed reviewed...

You said it not me lol
It is plain false.

Reviewers were not mixed.

GoT you said is universal appraised had 15 mixed reviews.

We haven’t seen anything like Last of Us it’s a deadly combination of action and drama winning game of the year during COVID.

Not a hater as TLoU2 is my personal game of the year. Was engrossed from beginning to end.... but honestly GOTY 2020 should go to Animal Crossing because of how the population took to it during the worst lockdown period of COVID. It truly helped to define this year in games, IMO.
