This is the most poor and barebones start of a new-generation

I see this is OP's first new console generation.

Those were year 2 games. The PS2 launched in 2000.

Lol yeah I'm betting a lot of the people that think those were launch titles weren't around in 2000 when that console launched. The PS2 launch wasn't great either. SSX was it really. Timesplitters was possibly a launch title too I think?

In some ways yes(launch lineup)in others it is better(BC and Load times). I'm getting both consoles at launch and am super excited about Demon's Souls, Spiderman, Gears 5 MP at 120fps, The Medium, finishing Ghost of Tshushima, Valhalla, Cyberpunk, WD: Legion, etc.

I don't know, I can see it because of the exclusive games but they make up for it with Backwards compatibility, 120fps, load times, Game Pass, etc.

PS5 is the only one with true next gen games playable only on next gen hardware. Not many to be honest, but at least there are some.
I dont count Switch as a next gen machine 😉

Neither launch is amazing, but at least PS5 has a few first party games which I feel definitely gives it the edge. Sure, there’s the third party games for XSX, but PS5 has those as well. You know things are bad when you have to hype up backwards compatibility games and Gamepass which is available for XBOX One right NOW for your next generation console.

Nah.

Series X got all the Xbox 360 games I can finally play without them looking and running like shit.
That'll tide me over for a while.

completely agree with OP; Both consoles have underwhelming launch in my opinion, remake of DS doesnt excite me (I have played ds on ps3 and didn’t like it), spiderman MM - as gameplay looks similar to the PS4 game I am not excited either, tried to force myself to finish Spider-Man on my PS4 pro but it is not game for me, outside of these games there are no other AAA games at launch on ps5, re. Xbsex there isn’t anything even mentioning for launch. I think both consoles will start to deliver late next year but launch is not impressive.

Exactly zero games on that list were available when PS2 launched, not just in Japan but anywhere in the world.

PS2 launch in Australia (latest territory to receive it): 30 November 2000
  • Ace Combat 04: September 2001
  • Dark Alliance: December 2001
  • Devil May Cry: August 2001
  • Final Fantasy X: July 2001
  • GT3 A-Spec: April 2001
  • GTA 3: October 2001
  • Ico: September 2001
  • Jack and Daxter: December 2001
  • MGS 2: November 2001
  • Silent Hill 2: September 2001

This is an actual list of PS2 launch games. And mind you, this was for the US launch in October 2000, but PS2 had been available in Japan since March. The overwhelming majority is mediocre with a couple of actual hits, like Tekken and SSX.

I'm a huge PS2 lover, but holy shit those rose-tinted glasses really make people blind sometimes.

Compared to these, the PS5 launch lineup is way above. I mean, there might have been more in the past, but for the most part, it was all trash.

You are not a Souls fan.

Most Playstation fans are.

Also, Spiderman MM and replaying games like TLU2 and Ghost of Tsushima on PS5 will be glorious. So most PS fans are fine with it.

Really? Didn't they sell like 5 million copies or less of the last game? 5 out of 100 millions owners is hardly "most", its 5%.

I was very excited like on year ago. But over time, my excitement declined hard. Now I guess I'll wait for the PS5 Pro.

Spider-man and DS look very good and I'd love to play them. But that's not enough for me atm.

One hour tech demo, remake, full-price DLC, and a character nobody gives a shit about.
So a remake has less entertainment value than any other game now?
Do you buy games because of what they are (tech demos, sequels, original IPs, remakes, remasters, whatever) or TO FUCKING PLAY THEM?
There is probably more dev work in that remake than in some reskins that keep being sold as new games (fifas, nbas, etc).

I'm buying the ps5 for Demon's Souls, and Astro Bot and Sackboy are extras.
Compared to Ps4 where there wasn't a single launch game that interested me, this launch is 300% better!

For some gamers in some platforms maybe. We all know the overwhelming majority of gamers play on a single platform, or preferred platform - which is why this sentiment is common place for some. We should be quite honest about that instead of spreading the pessimism around.

Definitely not for future PS5 owners.

Demon Souls Remake
Spider-man Miles Morales
Destruction All Stars
Sackboy's Big Adventure
Returnal
Horizon Forbidden West
Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart
Kena Bridge of Spirits
Godfall
God of War: Ragnarok
Stray
Little Devil Inside
Deathloop
Ghostwire Tokyo
Final Fantasy XVI

All of that in some fashion exclusive to the PS5 platform for Year 1. That's a monster 12 months + change. Like I always say.... if your preferred platform ain't delivering.... you have the choice to switch. Eat it, man up, and simply do it.

The 3 biggest titles on this list by far (gow, ratchet, horizon) may not even be out in the next year (2021 release date means likely the end of the year, if not slip to 2022)

I will have both systems so I'm happy either way, but let's not pretend by the end of 2021 perhaps into 2022 that xbox won't also have good list of exclusive aaa games, even if they haven't been announced yet.

I've been asking this same questions to Sony fanboys and the question needs to be asked again after DA was moved to Feb today.

Why are they claiming this is the best launch in history? Demons Souls is the ONLYYYYYYY exclusive? What Microsoft has done is terrible for launch as well, but wtf is with the disparity in hate? They both have terrible launch lineups.

Did you see the list of games for launch?
Did you see the list of games you get to play of you sign up for PS+ ?

If you don't think any of these games are interesting, well, sorry for you. Maybe PS5 is not for you.

I still have flashbacks of playing Genji Days of the blade on PS3.

Maybe I'm just old but I've seen much more barebone launches.

I think it all falls down to taste and what you consider worthwhile playing.

I strongly disagree.

Spiderman, Demon's Souls, AC Valhalla, Ratchet, Horizon 2, Ragnarok, GT7, Cyberpunk and whatever the hell else we're getting next year is way better than last gen.

Do you even remember how awful fall 2013 and 2014 were? You had mediocre games like Shadow of Mordor and Dragon Age winning GOTY.

And sorry but Shadow Fall and Knack were both trash. Demon's Souls alone is better.

I think gamers need to accept the fact that the times are changing, and something that was viable 10, 20, 30 years ago simply doesn't cut it anymore, and we will no longer see transitions when one generation of hardware is being left behind overnight and all the focus is all of a sudden shifted onto the new platforms, rather, we will see seamless transitions like we see on PC, where two generations coexist with each other for quit some time, and it's only up to you if you're fine with 1080p, 30 FPS, or do you want to experience the same games at 4K, 60FPS, RT, HDR, fast loadings, and what's not.

Honestly, I really enjoyed Dragon Age:Inquisition..... At first I found it even better than WItcher 3, because I had a hard time getting into it. I never played 1 or 2 before and didn't know anything from the books, so it was all kinda "Why should I care...". Glad I didn't gave up on it, though.

I'll be getting Demon Souls, Sackboy, Miles Morales, and NBA2k21 whenever Sony Asia gets its act together. Maybe Godfall, if it ends up being good. I've seen far worse launches.

Launch quality is completely subjective, as launch libraries are always limited, and if you don't like any of the games on offer, then it's not going to be good for you.

Demons souls, spiderman, sackboy and astrobot. That's a pretty fucking great launch compared to others. Plus the announced 2021 lineup is pretty crazy for PS5.

Series xs is quite lackluster tho.

The only unexciting part of next gen for me it's how shit the PSN web store is now, they fucked up the little that they have fixed and shoved all my legacy software in the darkest corner possible so i won't notice when they finally decide to pull the licenses.

What a bunch of wankers the new management at playstation turned out to be, i hope WWS don't suffer much because of it.

On the launch of the XB1, the best game I had to play was CoD: Ghosts.

Sorry but as an Xbox player mainly, I really don’t care for your stance on BC. For me it’s a major selling point. I still play current gen games and i’d be pissed if I was artificially locked out because “new gen”. Even Sony followed Xbox’s lead on BC and made it possible for PS4 games 😂

it’s like buying a new GPU for me and I’m happy because I build my own PC’s too. I laugh at the people spreading concern as if games are suddenly not being made anymore.

My advice to Xbox devs, give your studios as much time as humanly possible to make the best games possible. I can wait.

Not even close.

Ps2 with fantavision, kessen and fucking xsquad or ps3\ps4\xone were much worse.

At least we have demons and cyberpunk, just these 2 games crush any launch line up in the last 15 years most probably.

Yeah, neither console has a great launch (although PS5 is better). The enhanced games for launch are nice, but other then 3rd party line ups the only thing PS5 has is Demon Souls and Spiderman MM (which are both day 1 for me and I am pumped for them both). Sackboy as well, but I'm still on the fence for that one.

Microsoft has massively dropped the ball though, I'm just rather puzzled they didn't have Microsoft Flight Simulator and Minecraft RT as day one games. Flight Simulator has been out for a while, and the Series X/S both have the chops to run the game well. If the Xbox One generation is holding it back then they should just release the Series versions first and have the One versions come out later. Minecraft RT is even more puzzling, they demoed the game in a more than playable state more than half a year ago. 1080p-1440p on the X at 30FPS should be doable, even the S should be able to do 720p-900p at 30FPS. Also, before anyone lols at 720p, Minecraft RT is fully pathtraced, that shit is the most demanding RT showcase at the moment.

Without being a blind fan of either company, you can tell this is the less exciting new-generation in like.... a very long while?

Yeah, Xbox fans will tell you they've got the most powerful console with GamePass with 200 games and backward compatibility through 3 generations making the console launch with thousand of enhanced games day 1. While PlayStation fans will tell you they've got a remake and an expansion pack.

So, this is the start of next-gen? A remake/remaster of a 2 gen old game, an expansion (also available in PS4), and a bunch of backward compatible games? That's it?

No big new IP AAA from any of the two companies? Heck, not even a AAA new entry on existing franchises either with Halo Infinite delay.

Also, all this talking about the big jump in power and none made a proper game at least to showcase the graphical leap?

AND, NOT ONLY THAT, but also, not a single big multi game from the big gaming companies either.

No new next-gen only EA games.

No new next-gen only Activision games.

No new next-gen only Ubisoft games.

And the list goes on and on.

Be it because COVID. Because companies are afraid to leave last gen playerbase numbers. Because there's almost zero innovation. Because.... etc. Whatever the reason, this is the most poor and barebones new-gen.

You are correct.

It's astonishing how many gamers in online gaming communities don't seem to be bothered by this but it's the most lackluster next-gen I remember, possibly ever.

Barely any games, absolutely no true next-gen game, not only at launch, but even later as the only next-geen looking footage is from Unrea Engine 5, a tech demo running a 1440p.

Both consoles are underpowered and PS5 is super big and ugly.

All the talk has been about SSDs and Backward compatibility because there is literally nothing else to talk about! Even ray-tracing is not providing a big changes because those RT cores are not enough!

It's so sad, personally I am not buying new hardware until they release some serious next-gen games, most hardcore gamers could buy the new consoles anyway at launch but what about casuals that are 90% of the market?

Mario 64 alone dumps on every single game that ever launched ever since for any other console. You can't compare, this was a huge jump for video games.

Hard agree, no question. Doesn't change the fact that the console had next to nothing else for the first year or so.

See, the only thing I find astonishing is that there are so many people upset about the launch games.

Neither manufacturer is blowing us away, but I have a back catalogue a mile long which in theory is now improved. Those games, remade on next-gen devices, would play barely any differently and, at a basic level, wouldn't look a mile different either.

Mix this in with the fact I've never seen a convincing description of what next gen actually is, and it's obvious what people are really doing is asking for developers to artificially block games from PS4/Xbox One just so it can be claimed as next-gen. For reference of the effect this has, go ahead and look at all the Miles Morales posts before it was confirmed to be cross-gen.

Games just aren't going to get that 2d to 3d leap ever again. Upgrades are iterative. That means almost by definition that the leap isn't so big it can't also be supported on older hardware.

I'm buying both consoles because I have a list a mile long of games to play on them. If there wasn't a single new release for the first 18 months, I still wouldn't run out of new games to play.

Maybe there are people out there who have extremely crap taste in games and can only get excited by half a dozen a year. Maybe they play everything they want to play immediately when it comes out. I just don't see that being the majority.

Disagree for PS5

We have Demon Souls, Godfall, Destruction All Stars, Sackboy and Spiderman Miles Morales

Thats more than enough for me for launch game

I actually think that’s a pretty good launch lineup for the PS2. A lot of variety up there and some good games imo. There are more fighting games at launch in there then we’ll probably see the entire next generation sadly.

I don't think it's too bad. Let me preface this by admitting that I'm not getting either the PS5 nor XsX at launch.

The backward compatibility / large digital libraries will help tide a lot of people over in the transition. People will go back to revisit the old games that are thrown on the PS+/XBLG bin and will play the holiday hotness. Cyberpunk2077 is gonna be a pretty big game this year. I don't see why that wouldn't tide people over for a month or two.

Every generation launch, even if very few games where available, even if the launch games where not great, they where all next gen games.
This generation is playing old generation titles and launching with last generation compatible titles.
Halo Infinite got delayed, but even that is an old gen title.
