So many of you worried about cooling, yet Sony has been a premier consumer electronics company for longer than the vast majority of us have been alive. Come on, guys. They know what they're doing.
Compare to the Xbox, which always seems to have a massive external power brick somehow.

Sony is so premier consumer electronic company, that if not PlayStation, they would probably be down long time ago. Their notebooks division is dead, TVs are falling behind competition, Phone sales are disaster.
Compare X1X with PS4Pro, or X1S with PS4 slim. Sony's engineering is falling behind for long time already and if you don't know X1S, X1X and XSX all have internal power supply.

Really don't like it, if I'm being honest. I generally don't like 'bendy' or plasticy-looking designs when it comes to my electronics.

I once agreed and worshiped Sony design. 80s/90s/00s they were king. Those days have passed. Sony isn't what it was. MS has surpassed them in design, not just for consoles. Also, own a PS4 pro, sign they didn't know what they were doing.

Actually, as for not knowing what they were doing, Cerny went out of his way to state that they did indeed know what they were doing and did it anyway. He then goes out of his way to state this time will be different. Time will definitely tell. I mean, with that design, the cooling better be amazing.

This. It is what it is, no point losing sleep over the design.
I just hope that pretentious design comes with the rumored over-engineered cooling solution... because if this thing also sounds like a jet engine then... RIP.

Futuristic for sure but I think it’ll grow on people after a while, when they released the DualSense I thought it looked quite controversial and not a Sony design as it was bold, but now it looks amazing.
I think same will happen with the console, would be interesting to know who designed this, back in 2013 Andrew house was on stage with the designer in e3, wonder if he did this or they asked someone who designs skyscrapers in Dubai this time around

I get it. PS5 design is bold. Might warm on it but don't think it'll age well (think n64, bold in own time but now dated) Not sure if what I want in console shape. Like xbox tower look, never seen that before in console. Industrial look not as eyecatching but timeless. Also will fit nicely in home space.And MS did by doing exactly the same
I know people have different tastes.....
MS does other stuff too. Like Surface. Very sleek. MS use to be run by software engineers with no style but lots has changed over years.

I can’t say I like it. The ‘antenas’ and the blue light are pretty bad. Not a fan of the color scheme either but seeing they went nuts already I would almost welcome a more colorful version.
I have to say tho I loved the XSex design and after seeing the PS5 I love it less, as in borderline too bland.

It looks out of fashion, generic low cost, electronic device, badly balanced and very tiring to even look at.
Reminds me of some "futuristic" looking comercials about detergents and soap from the 2000's and 2010's aimed at housewives.
Definitely the Xsex looks better. It actually looks innovative, cool and stylish. The oposite of the PS5.

I don't mind it. I think it'll hit different when we see it in person. On the screen it looks much bigger than it probably is. I think some of the games they showed look great, but they were kind of nebulous on release date stuff. This thing is supposed to be super backward compatible too, right? The fact I can crack open my old collection without having to hook up an old PS is a really good sell.

It is not backwards compatible except for some selected PS4 titles (they say most of PS4 games will work)

This new PS is huge, cooling solution is said to be aces. It looks stylish and great and should be whisper quiet with all that great tech inside. No way you are packing a 16 thread chip, high end GPU at insane clocks and a 3D audio chip and who knows what else for a PS4 Slim like factor. Maybe when these chips make it to 3nm.

I've been puzzled about this myself. I have a launch PS4 in immaculate condition and it's pretty quiet even when the fans occasionally spin up.
Is it climate? Dust? Smoking? Luck?
I mean, I've played the shit out of it for almost 7 years now. The only issue I've had is the thumbsticks wearing down.

It would be much better in black, but even then it is not that great. But I am more concerned with the performance of the unit in regards to noise and heat. I assume they made it that large because of the heat it produces, but with that said we don't know how efficient the cooling solution is. I have a Pro which gets loud but not as loud as others I have heard, but I don't want a brand new next gen console sounding like it is about to take flight because it is being pushed by a game.

Absolutely, I bought both PS4 and PRO at their launches. Consoles still run like a dream. It's the only gen I've not opened one of my PS systems to check it out or clean it. I don't even cover it for dust like I did prior consoles. They are just sitting there taking all the dust, I dust the top of it occasionally, that's it. At odd occasions the fans ramp up, most times when I'm not even playing anything really. I think this maybe some cleaning measure or some auto maintenance feature that PS4 has. Most of the time whilst I've been gaming, I don't hear a thing. I guess you may hear the fan if your job is to put your ear next to it instead of playing the game....

At the end of the day it doesn't matter what it looks like. It's aesthetics, someone will always be disappointed. Only things that matters is "does it play the best games?"....

Ugliest console in my lifetime honestly. I don’t what Jim Ryan was saying when he said it would fit in nice in most living spaces. That thing will stand out like a sore thumb. I don’t care how consoles look after the first week anyways. Seems like something ppl would’ve loved back in day for the ps2 or OG Xbox. I feel most people don’t want that fake futuristic look nowadays

I dunno what to think about that design. Leave it to the Japanese to come up with something like that! I think it is a bold move on their part, but whether is is a smart or not remains to be seen. Is it a case of form following function? If it is, I must confess, I don't see it. I do not see the shape as hideous, but it does look odd. If it is 100% functional, no hidden ports or buttons to locate, runs cool and quiet, then okay I can dig it.

That thing will look fire on my living room. Size may be a bit of a problem but we'll see in the tear down the full dimensions so.
