I love this site for two reasons: it is really awesome to have a place to check all (or at least most) of GOTY awards from the years and I really appreciate all the word the owner do to keep the tracking updated.

Said that I'm opening a thread to discuss this year (2019) race to the overall GOTY:

  • Death Stranding- 90
    • Media Outlets: 57 | Readers' Choice: 33
  • Resident Evil 2- 79
    • Media Outlets: 52 | Readers' Choice: 27
  • Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice- 62
    • Media Outlets: 51 | Readers' Choice: 11
  • Control - 29
    • Media Outlets: 28 | Readers' Choice: 1
  • Disco Elysium - 15
  • The Outer Worlds - 10
  • Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order - 9
  • Outer Wilds - 9
  • Fire Emblem: Three Houses - 8
  • Devil May Cry 5 - 6
  • Metro Exodus - 5
  • Untitled Goose Game - 5
  • A Plague Tale: Innocence - 4
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare - 4
  • Astral Chain - 2
  • Days Gone - 2
  • Gears 5 - 2
  • Judgment - 2
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 for PC - 2
  • Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield - 2
  • Super Mario Maker 2 - 2
  • Assetto Corsa Competizione - 1
  • Baba Is You - 1
  • Borderlands 3 - 1
  • FIFA 20 - 1
  • Luigi's Mansion 3 - 1
  • Monster Hunter World: Iceborne - 1
  • Spirit Hunter: NG - 1
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - 1
  • Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair - 1
  • 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim - 1

You can see others years winners in the blog too.

What do you think about this year GOTY choices? The awards are about 10% of all of them (it will reach about 400 awards across the world).

To be fair the battle was being only between Death Stranding and Control until yesterday but surprising today Sekiro received 3 GOTY awards that put it at second place tied with Control.
We have 3 big candidates now.

PS. I wanted to share some love to Disco Elysium that received just 1 award up to now... it is really incredible.

Quite surprised to see Sekiro up there. By all accounts it was a bit more difficult than previous Souls games and we all know how the media fares with game difficulty...

I would say the actual enemies and bosses are much tougher but in my opinion it’s much more forgiving when it comes to its death penalty. You never lose skill point you already earned, you only lose one in progress, you will lose money but the game gives enough money bag that never have worry about money and the biggest one is Dragonrot, NPC get sick when you die too many times but they never will die from it and you can cure all them with Dragon's Blood Droplet which not only easy to find but also very cheap to buy.

I know difficulty in Souls games is subjective, but Sekiro was one of the easiest Souls games IMO. Tons of mobility, stealth for free kills, and being able to nearly spam the parry made for an easy first playthrough. There were no bosses I was stuck on for like 40+ tries, days, or weeks at a time like in Bloodborne or DS.

Report me for console warring (Xbot, Xbro etc.)
If DS ends up leading it would mean that Sony is the first publisher since at least 2003 with a back to back overall GOTY.
Highly impressive

Control is showing a strong position at the awards. It could take the lead if it receives more people support.

After Uncharted 4 and GoW, I didn't expected Death Stranding to be the probable 3rd Goty from Sony in the same gen. Anyway, my expectations are for next year with TLoU 2 and Ghost ot Tsushima.

Control is my GOTY and I didn't even finish it :p. Its gorgeous with RTX on even if I had to play it at 1080p to keep it above 60fps. PUBG on PS4 takes up 90% of my gaming time though, so maybe it should be my GOTY again.

Is there a away to see how many hours you have spent playing a game on PS4? I bet I am close to 500 hours on PUBG ps4.

In the save some games have how much you played but that depends on Devs of course and if you go back to a old save you back to that time too... it is just how much you played to finish the game and not count the retries lol

Ahh, lame. PUBG is multiplayer so it likely wont have anything. With steam it tells you on the launcher how long you have played a game.

If the game tracks that itself it will have but the save feature only works in single player games... well campaign games because coop campaign works too.

I need to pick up Control, but it doesn’t seem to want to drop in price and my backlog is pretty big.

For me, stand outs have been RE2, Sekiro, Modern Warfare, Yooka Laylee 2, Jedi Fallen Order and Zelda Links Awakening.

LTTP games were Spiderman, as I only got around to it a few months back.

Spyro wasn’t this year was it? Because that was awesome too.

And let’s not forget FFVII, because fuck it that can win EVERY year for me.

Can’t believe control has 8 lol, though it’s tough to choose GOTY this year as all choices aren’t up to par as GOTY, would be so much easier to make a top 20 most disappointing list this year.

There is a lot of GOTY content this year.

Sekiro and Control not having any reader's picks for GOTY is interesting. I'll be curious to see how this list stacks up with the GAF poll.

Also, God bless whoever maintains this website. I'm always impressed by it every year.

I'm happy to see From Software get some credit. They always have this "small talk" about their difficulty and frankly they created a very enjoyable genre. The term soulslike gets thrown around and to me From Software has not been recognized for their amazing games. As a From Software fan, its better to hear about the game than hear about what others think about the game. The criticism is of course there, but its so annoying if you're a die hard fan. Its like saying a task is too hard because you don't want to put in the effort. No offense.

I'm not shocked Devil May Cry 5 didn't make the list. I think they made a game that needed DLC. I felt like I was playing the vanilla version and the updates weren't that thrilling. I really liked it, but it really needed the DLC playable character. Death Stranding was very enjoyable, but I almost feel like Sekiro needed the praise. It was a satisfying game to me. Same with Resident Evil 2. I also feel like Resident Evil 2 came out and it was excellent. It just came out with all its bells and whistles. I honestly feel like fans played it so much that it was kinda put back on the shelf and everyone moved on. I don't think that's a bad thing, but it definitely wasn't talked about (same with DMC5) after a month or two of release. 2019 was a great year in my opinion.

I almost bought Control, but I really want to wait till its $20 or less. I'm just not feeling it. It looked cool, but it was more of a visual thing for me (like a action game type of Rez).

I should buy Sekiro, I just don't have time for Souls-like games any more. It's just an hour of getting frustrated every couple of days.

Haven't seen this one added on that blog yet but it seems like it would count

The Review Geek GOTY: A Plague Tale: Innocence

If Death Stranding walks away with the most it would mean Sony had the biggest winner 3 out of the past 4 years. It would 5 in the past 11. No one else comes close to that. No to mention the other years where they usually had a runner up like in 2017 or had 1 or more games winning GOTY awards. Pretty incredible.

Sony is the Oscar bait of video game publishers, that's all it really says.
