I think they were just like, nah we'll put out this thing our die hard fans are going to love it... And then shit just hit the roof

Nintendo probably ordered 100,000 in total and expected them to sit on store shelves for a year. In this case I really don't think they anticipated the demand based on the number of other types of Retro sold.

Yeah, probably so. Man, that was crazy. For at least a month we got 5-10 people calling in every day asking about it. And we're a fairly small Walmart, too.

I hope they know that manufacturing insanely low amounts like that for Switch would be absolutely ridiculous, though.

Why wouldn't they just anticipate demand and make enough so that we don't have a Wii or Amiibo situation? Seems to be the most reasonable situation to me.

Because sometimes it's hard to gauge demand for a product. Did you really expect Nintendo to be able to anticipate that the wii would have far more demand than any console in history? They went from the GC which was a disaster to absolutely dwarfing the sales of the PS2.

That plus you can't always just ramp up production. Sure pre orders will give them an idea of what to expect but launch is 2 months away. There is only so much they can ramp up production. After what happened with the wii U and 3DS it's easy to see why they're cautious.

So what is everyone watching the presentation on?

Tablet?
Wii-U Youtube App?
PS4 Twitch App?
PC?
Phone?

I'm supposed to be going on Holiday tomorrow with the missus, and as much as she knows we both want to see it, we need to sleep to get 2 trains so I'll be using my phone with earbuds on the sneak while I'm in bed. Shhh.

I'm just on PC at work with Youtube up. I'm trying to decide if I wanna watch someone on Twitch stream it on my phone, but I'm thinking not. It'll be easier to talk with you guys and watch it on the PC.

Dude, were you even around when the Wii first launched in the United States? It's common knowledge that there were shortages months after launch. I would know because I could n't secure a system until January and that was with me checking my Gamestop every single Friday when the shipments came in. And no, I did not live in a rural area.

I'm not misinformed.

I worked retail in 2006. I know all about the Wii situation. I know all about receiving 50+ units at a time and every single one of them selling to customers within an hour. I know all about the NPD numbers showing the Wii crushing the other consoles in sales almost every month for four straight years.

The ideas that Nintendo created artificial shortages of that console or didn't respond to increased demand are so incredibly nonsensical, I don't even know what else to say.

Just because there were shortages doesn't make what he said incorrect.

Also would make no sense from a revenue standpoint... Stockholders would never let them get away with that

you missed the point that he was making. he wasn't refuting the fact that there were shortages. there were. he was bringing up how many consoles Nintendo produced, lending credence to the fact that the shortages were not artificial and Nintendo actually had a shit ton of Wii's out in the wild they just sold like crazy.

Can't believe it, just a couple hours to go... I'm sure I'll either be completely blown away by the sheer volume of awesomeness or totally devastated! Maybe I should start drinking now? ×-×

There was no situation with the Wii Nintendo was making them as fast and shipping them out as fast as they could demand was just on another level compared to any other console in history.

I have a hard time believing Nintendo couldn't get more Wii units to market. Yes, it was a hot seller but they have a history of underestimating demand. Wii, amiibo, NES classic...All I was trying to say is that I hope they anticipate demand for Switch and make enough so I am not running all over the city trying to secure a console months after launch.

So whats the chances of walking into Nintendo World tomorrow anytime and preordering, is this a case of lining up overnight, if so Im not even going to bother to head over.

Yup. It literally does them no favors. They make a majority of their money on software, so the more consoles they have out there, the better for them. Coming off of the Wii U, I'm not surprised at any tentativeness they might have as far as initial production numbers go.

But how is that proof of artificial shortages? Sounds to me that if they produced more Wii consoles at launch than any previous console in history, it is just proof of a wildly popular product.

Now if someone has proof that there was a warehouse pull of the things and they were purposely drip feeding them out, that would be proof. But nothing like that has ever come out. All signs point to Nintendo producing them as fast as they could be not meeting demand.

The only thing they could have done was open (or contract with) another factory but that takes time. And I think everyone was surprised the thing sold so well for so long. Remember they were coming off the GameCube with this one.

I do not think you are misinformed. Your experience is valid. But there is often more going on than just what we can see from store shelves.

Hey I never posted here except for my fabulous drawing a couple of minutes ago.

What I want from the Switch ?
Hmm...

- No region lock, and I will believe it only when they say it.
- Games, lot of games, or more realistically a bunch of games.
- A good handling of Nintendo (and video games in general) legacy through VC.

The console seems powerful enough to provide nice looking graphics, the hybrid nature of the thing could be an answer to the droughts, things are looking cool, don't do an epic fail on some side things like online infrastructure or account Nintendo !

Well to be fair, the West Coast port strike had a lot to do with the amiibo shortages in the beginning.

I never said the shortages were artificial I just said I hope they make enough this time so that it's not a hassle to buy one. Nintendo has a history of underestimating demand and I don't want them to do that with Switch because I want to buy it, just like I wanted to buy NES classic but can't give them my money.

My local gamestop was unable to confirm allocation or whether or not they were taking preorders. I may try the other one in the town to see.

The Wii and NES Classic situations are very different and cannot really be compared. The Wii, like Switch, is a flagship product, so if demand is high, Nintendo will respond accordingly. The NES Classic was a neat little novelty for the holiday season that no retailer believed in until it was too late. It's a very low priority item for Nintendo.
