No, I am serious. It may be the highest grossing, but I wanna know what the most expensive year for costs was. Just for perspective.

Because why not? Domestic grosses and reported production budgets for every film released in at least 1500 theatres at its peak this year (plus Manchester and La La Land). Totals and averages are at the bottom.

						TOTAL $9.789B $7.907B
						AVERAGE $72M $58M

585 additional films released in 1 to 1499 venues accounted for another $419M combined. A very small handful of these (a dozen maybe? will receive wide releases next year)

The remaining $900M+ came from 2015 films (over $460M from The Force Awakens and The Revenant alone).

Speaking of rewatching Civil War, last night was the first time I've seen it since theatre. I actually thought it was even better on a rewatch. Damn good film imo

But that's a deal that was struck well before the movie deal.

Right. The 2011 deal pretty much gave Disney/Marvel full control and profits from the merchandise (movie or not). It also gave Sony full profits from the movies AND a fee that Disney had to pay Sony (3.5% per movie with a hard cap every 10 years).

The contract was definitely amended, but we don't know if the above was changed. Feige said it was a one time thing, but there are rumors that it was up to 3 solo and 3 ensemble movies. No one knows the exact details and we'll probably only know for sure if Disney is actually getting royalties from the spiderman movie after they release their FY17 or Q3 17 financials.

Who is the idiot that approved the $110M budget for Divergent?
Vinny.

That was just a joke. I might have started it.

Oh, I'm sure it started as a joke. But there's a whole little crew of rugrats around here who actually believe shit like that, and they scurry back to their own private boards and spinoff forums and gossip about the shit like it's real.

It's kinda fuckin' insane, really.

Here's 2015 for comparison to my 2016 post above. Again, I stuck to the Top 100, plus all films that saw a release in at least 1500 theatres during 2015 (or early 2016 for awards films).

A couple exceptions: I cut Monkey Kingdom, because it was a nature doc, and Disney doesn't post budgets for those sorts of things. I also couldn't find a budget for Strange Magic.

Average budgets are well within rounding error/studio lying between the two years. 2015 has the advantage of having full runs for all of its December releases. I would expect the 2016 domestic box office average to end up in the high 70Ms by the time we get through awards season.

EDIT: Also, the Force Awakens bumped up the average gross of the other 130 films above by about $6.7M.

Oh, god. I've made Kswiss go full chart. I have broken him.

I need more light!

Haha.

Those are the only two years I am going to do. If I was better at writing scripts, it would be interesting to data mine and auto-format every year off BOM, but I'm not doing any more by hand.

Spectre's budget is ridiculous. I'm aware there were severe script problems, but if that's the number they're publicly disclosing, I can't imagine how much it actually costs.

Tomorrowland's budget also unfortunately explains why Disney's live action department isn't venturing out of the fairy tale remake category anymore.

I spent a few minutes playing around with those production budget numbers.

Between 2015 and 2016, I found the budgets for 264 films that released in at least 1500 theatres domestically (nearly all of them, except for Strange Magic and some awards hopefuls releasing in January).

Here's how the budget's break down

Code:
Budget Category Number of films in category
Under $10M 32
$10M-24M 65
$25M-49M 68
$50M-99M 45
$100M-149M 24
$150M-199M 22
$200M and up 8
------------------------------------------------------------
TOTAL 264 films (released in 1500+ venues)
MEAN PROD. BUDGET	$57M
MEDIAN PROD. BUDGET	$35M

It's funny how it feels like all Hollywood makes are $150M+ blockbusters when those only made up 11% of the wide releases over the past two years.

I'll buy Bronson a backyard wrestling league in Boise and let him tweet all the action to his 8 followers.

Looking at the timeline right now, Bronson is standing in a snowy field. What is the context? Does he live there? Is he waiting for a UFO? I mean come on

Yesss. More stats. I need more light!

I'm taking a stand--BronsonLee is an OK dude. He's like the Anthony Mackie of this thread. Nobody is running out to give him a starring role, but does well enough playing the friend or colleague, your second fiddle roles.

Bronson is the best friend in every romantic comedy.

Just there to make the star look better.

God daaaaamn.

Bronson, bruh let out that inner Alpha. Its time to take a stand

180 million on Tarzan still blows my mind. If I'm reading those charts correctly, it was bad, but it wasn't too bad. Was it a runaway budget or was that actually planned from the start?
