XSEED Finally announces Corpse Party for PSP PSN

Yep, this game is FULLY-VOICED, so dubbing it would've been monumentally time-consuming and expensive... and would've probably been pretty terrible, too, as there's a lot of screaming, crying and general emoting that would be VERY hard to duplicate without top-tier actors and a very long, very careful recording process.

The Japanese voices, on the other hand, are *amazing*. Seriously, this game's got some really astounding acting in it.

...Oh, also, hi again! This is Tom from XSEED. :) Any specific questions about Corpse Party I can answer, I will, so ask away. If I'm unable to comment for legal or contractual reasons or something, I'll say so... but I love talking about games I enjoy, and I enjoyed the hell out of Corpse Party!

I looked over that press release several times, and I may just be a poor reader but was there a release date listed anywhere? I also googled it and it didn't come up. An October release would be amaaaaaaaaaaaaazzzzzzziiiiiiiingg but who knows how far along the translation process it is...well actually, are you allowed to tell us how far into the translation Corpse Party is Mr. Wyrdwad?

Just noticed that the press release settles what was up with XSEED's "3D audio" tweet that some people took to mean a hint at Nazo Waku Yakata.
Oh snap. True.

The game's been fully translated (by me! Yaaay!), but the programming side of things looks like it may take a while yet, and then there's QA and mastering and such... so we really can't say how long it'll be until it's released. We'd love to do October so people could play the game over Halloween, but honestly, that might not be possible. Which would really suck (and cut into our sales for sure!), but... that's the way the cookie crumbles, you know?

I guess for now, just keep your fingers crossed for a pre-Halloween release... but prepare for the unfortunate eventuality of a post-Halloween release (accompanied by several formal apology bows from us).

Oh, and expect a post from me later with more info on what this game is and how it plays, as that seems to be a source of much confusion for a lot of you. I'd go into detail on it now, but I'm actually at work, and should probably get back to translating instead. ;)

Cool. Glad they're keeping the JP voices in. I heard the sounds and music were pretty much central to the gameplay and immersion, and I guess that would be hard to replicate with English VA (especially since it's completely fully voiced).

I heard that the load times were pretty bad in the original JP UMD release. Since this is downloadable-only, I assume they aren't nearly as bad as the UMD copy, right?

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLEASE TELL ME YOU ARE BRINGING OVER GRAND KNIGHTS HISTORY, IT'S OKAY IGNITION WONT STEAL IT THIS TIME LIKE MURAMASA, WE NEED IT SO BADLY, PLEASE JUST SAY SOMETHING.

Ahem. Now that that's out of the way, about how long is a typical path for the game supposed to be?

So uh... how does the game actually work? Any battle system to speak of? Do you solve puzzles? Is it a collection of quick-time events? Is it like a point-and-click game? Or more like lots of dialogue with some choices thrown in here and there?

Also, how scary is the game supposed to be? And exactly what is scary about it? I watched some videos on Youtube and I feel like the artistic style (and I guess the perspective as well) would lessen the horror for me personally. But would gladly be proven wrong, and I haven't actually played a horror game like this before so... :)

EDIT: Oh, and I love that it's being released on PSN, I only play PSP games on my PSP Go nowadays. :)

They finally revealed it. I'm not one of those filthy DD lovers, but I don't have a problem buying these release when it is the only way a publisher could get it out to the west.
No dub makes no difference to me.
I'll be looking forward to this.

I hope you'll be able to get it out before Halloween, but whenever it comes out I'll still buy it.
I'll also be looking forward to you posting more info, as the announcement trailer sold me on the game but I know very little about it.

Oooohhh translating something new already! Is it the big secret game you cannot reveal? ;)

Am I taking crazy pills? That trailer was horrible. Thats how you announce a game!?

I don't know what this game is and it's apparent history, so as an outsider I watched this trailer hoping to get a glimpse of what this game is. This trailer is so short and gives you almost zero information on what this game is about.

I can't even tell what genre this game is. I guess its a text adventure style of game but thats just a guess. So all they tell us is four kids die and they go to into detail about how they die and flash images of ghosts inbetween. Thats it.

I'm sorry but I love XSeed and all that they do for the gaming world bringing games over no one else would, but these kinda games need to show more what the games about. Quick one minute teasers will bore the casual audience and they might never look back.

Sorry for the rant, please continue in the celebration.

It's a pretty story-heavy game, and we don't have a proper English build yet, so all we can really do trailer-wise to give people an idea of what to expect from it is to show them a bit of the story, and give them a taste of the game's atmosphere.

If that trailer didn't intrigue you at all, though, then it's probably not a game you'd be very interested in. Its major selling points are its well-written story and intensely creepy atmosphere.

But I love these games type of games. I AM the target audience. Watching the first trailers for Phoenix Wright, Hotel Dusk, 999 and so forth I could instantly tell what the gameplay and story were going to be like.

This I have no idea. Is a decent 3 min trailer really that hard to ask for? Look I don't wanna put blind faith into something without a little info. I'm not going to get another Jake Hunter.

You speak as if this will be the last trailer we ever release, and there's no more information we ever plan on sharing! But this is practically just a teaser. It's designed to catch your attention, make you aware of the game's existence, and get you asking questions about it.

And in that sense, it seems like it succeeded quite admirably with you. ;)

So happy to have another crazy PSP game to add to my library. The trailer was suitably creepy, can't wait to play this!

Yes I suppose in an ironic sense that me talking about this teaser and how much I disliked it and how everyone else was excited for it inadvertently sparked interest into the game in the end.

I have come full circle GAF.

Edit: So this game is about murdering children?

See, I am not the only one.

No, its called a teaser. Also, if you are taking pills that you are not quite sure what they are, you should probably stop. But seriously, its a teaser. It's supposed to intrigue you into looking into the game more. I mean, fair enough if it turned you off to the game, but the game isn't coming out until at least Fall, so no rush.

Oh and thank you Mr. Wyrdwad for responding! I hope you guys meet the October date for Halloween goodness, but either way, Higurashi got me into Japanese horror and this looks right up my alley. Be looking forward to game play details and price.

Also, it is totally about EATING children not MURDERING them! JEEZE! Did you watch the trailer???

Not the only one who got that the game has a heavy focus on murdering children? Good, because it totally does! ;) Heheheheh...

Almost out of here. I'll post about this game in more detail soon. In the meantime, though, I'm just really glad to see so much interest in this game! Thanks for your support, everybody! :)

Sorry, but did you imply that the game will keep its original Japanese VA?

Heylas Tom! Excellent excellent choice, played the original, can't wait to see your translation.

Two questions that you probably can't comment on for contractual reasons but I'll ask them anyway!

1. Is your partnership with the original developers or 5.pb/mages(and I assume the original developers)?

2. Again great choice! curious out of all the many untranslated adventures games out there, what made you want to choose Corpse Party?

This is a good one to put out, very happy to see this as i've played the JP original and it's a good game.

Believe in XSEED. xD

They've confirmed it will. Too costly to do dubs for what will quite likely be an extremely niche title (& DD to boot) and the original VOs are so good that it would be hard to do them justice without a proper budget.

SpaceBridge: Yes, original Japanese VA all the way through.

And Finalfantasydog:

1. It's not a full-on partnership, but our point of contact for this game is actually 5pb. They've been working very closely with us so far, and they've been really great. We'd love to work with them again in the future.

2. Simply put, because we all liked it when we tried it. :) I'm actually kind of personally responsible for us working on Corpse Party, in a way, as I downloaded the Japanese demo of it on a whim, loved it, and bought the full game... then convinced our marketing guy to try it out, and HE loved it... so he convinced our president to try it out, and *HE* loved it... so we were all asked to play it for an hour or two and give feedback, and we *all* loved it! So we were like, what the hell... let's try to get the license! And get the license we did. :)

Anyway, if I can convince you guys to give me a rain-check on that game description for a day or two, I'd appreciate it, as I actually just got done describing the game in great detail for a written interview that might go up as early as tomorrow... and I don't want to screw over the interviewer, so I'd like to wait and see how much (if any) of my WALL OF TEXT gets posted. Then, I'll either just link you all to it, or post the full version here for your viewing pleasure (if it gets cut down or something).

That cool by you guys?

This was one of the first demos I downloaded for my new PSP (along with the Final Fantasy Type 0 demo) because it appears at the top of the Japan PSP PSN store...

Honestly I wasn't sure what it would be but I had heard of 5pb before of course and I'm willing to give anything a try.

However, I can't really tell if I'm just not the target audience or not understanding something but I can only express my feelings with picardwtfisthis.gif. I feel like if I comment negatively on this game I'm doing the same thing as the Japanese gamers who trash Western games...so I can only say I played it for a good 30 mins and didn't 'get it' at all. It seems basically like a horror sound novel with anime girls and some CG-ish cinematics, but the dance between making you feel uncomfortable and then shoving moe in your face right after must be something brewed up for a very specific gamer.

This sounds pretty cool as a reason for why it was picked.

It doesn't shove much moe in your face AFTER that first half-hour, actually. :) The intro is kind of designed to lull you into a false sense of security. After that point, it's all pretty much nonstop terror!

...I do think the moe character designs are intentional, though. It's like Higurashi no Naku Koro ni: make the characters really cute and innocent so that when horrible things happen to them it's even MORE disturbing (and when they DO horrible things, it's MAXIMUM disturbing!).

I don't think you can call Ryukishi's drawings cute! They are really expressive though.
