Hunky Nostradamus
World War One Centenary - BBC

Featuring four years of programming and events spanning 2014-2018 – echoing the timeframe of the war – the World War One Centenary on the BBC will be unique in scale and breadth - it is the biggest and most ambitious pan-BBC project ever commissioned with more than 2,500 hours of programming already planned across television, radio and online and across our international, national and local services.

Internationally BBC World Service and BBC World News will reflect the very different ways in which the war is remembered and commemorated around the world and will be both staging special debates and delving into individual stories.

"In trying to reach many different audiences, we are commissioning programming that will connect young people with the war beyond what they perhaps studied at school. With over 130 specially commissioned programmes and around 2,500 hours of programming, the BBC will be shining a spotlight on the First World War across all of our services. What we offer over the coming four years will be much more than a chronological historical record. We are setting out to broaden people's understanding of the war and to commemorate and remember those who died. Through documentaries, drama, news coverage, children’s programmes and arts and performance, we will tell well-known stories from fresh perspectives and original stories so far untold." said Adrian Van Klaveren, Controller, World War One Centenary

The Assets - ABC

The Assets is an eight-part miniseries based on the real life events of CIA counter-intelligence officer Sandy Grimes. 1985 serves as the backdrop to the final showdown of the Cold War when Sandy and her partner Jeanne Vertefeuille vowed to find the mole that would turn out to be the most notorious traitor in US History, Aldrich Ames. Sandy is in a race against time to save the Soviet intelligence officers from being caught and killed. Living her own double life at home, this beautiful wife and mother vowed to stop at nothing until she uncovered the truth. The Assets will look inside the true, personal stories of the conclusion of the Cold War as told by the keepers of the nation’s secrets: the CIA.

Growing Up Fisher - NBC

TYY5Nmr.jpg

It's not every family that's brought closer together by divorce, but then again, the Fishers aren't exactly typical. Take Mel Fisher, for example. Whether it's chopping down trees, showing his daughter how to drive or playing football with his son, he's never let the fact that he's blind slow him down.

Then there's Joyce Fisher, possibly the only mom in Pasadena to smoke a pipe. For her, divorce is like a second coming of age, a chance to be the teen she never was. Just ask '80s-obsessed teenage daughter Katie, whose clothes Joyce is always borrowing (that is, when she's not tagging along with Katie to the mall).

At the center of all this is Henry, the Fisher's 11-year-old son. Having always been his dad's eyes, ears and wingman, Henry's less than thrilled when Mel shows up with Elvis, a guide dog... which is also how Henry learns about the pending divorce. Awkward.

While reluctant of the changes this "big ball of fur" would bring, it's through the adult Henry's voice-over that we find out his parent's split would "allow all of us to finally discover... who we needed to be."

Set in Bob Mortimer’s home, every episode of House Of Fools sees Bob frustrated by his uninvited lodgers, visitors and guests who constantly fill his house. Led by Vic - Beef, Bosh and Julie knit together each week to wreak havoc on Bob.

Vic Reeves is the long term and mostly unwanted guest in Bob’s house, always treating the place like his own, with little regard for Bob’s wishes. Living alongside them is Bob’s Norwegian son, Erik, who has absolutely no time at all for his ‘moron’ father and next door is Julie, who lives in a haze of imagined fantasies. Adding to the chaos is a constant stream of unwelcome visitors to Vic and Bob’s flat. Amongst them is Beef a lady-obsessed lothario, not to be confused with Bosh, a Geordie ex-con, who has designs on moving in as well.

Just as Vic and Bob bent the rules of the panel show format, House Of Fools does the same to the studio sitcom. House Of Fools is half an hour of unadulterated Reeves & Mortimer, anarchic japes, unimaginable props and impossible situations.

Penny Dreadful is a frightening psychological thriller that weaves together these classic horror origin stories into a new adult drama.

The series stars Eva Green, Josh Hartnett and Timothy Dalton and was created and written by Oscar nominee John Logan (Gladiator, The Aviator, Hugo and Skyfall)

When Maggie discovers that her husband is having an online affair with a muscular German woman, Emma gives up her burgeoning business career in China to stay in their hometown and help Maggie raise her baby. Despite their differences – Emma is brash, bold, and assertive while Maggie is grounded, rational, and safe – the women complement each other the way only best friends can, by facing the challenges of their past, present and future--together.

Reckless - CBS

RqEkGd8.jpg

Reckless is a sultry legal drama set in Charleston, S.C., where a gorgeous Yankee litigator and a charming Southern attorney must hide their intense mutual attraction as a police sex scandal threatens to tear the city apart. Jamie Sawyer is enviously cool, confident and armed with south-side-of-Chicago street-smarts as she takes on the good ol’ boys in the South. Her handsome courtroom rival, Roy Rayder, a divorced father of two, embodies the Old South and is the newly minted City Attorney, thanks to his influential former father-in-law, Dec Fortnum.

When disgraced cop Lee Anne Marcus hires Jamie to represent her in a lawsuit against the police department, Jamie and Roy discover that Lee Anne is at the epicenter of a sinister case with dire implications for the members of the Charleston P.D. Heading that department is Deputy Chief Holland Knox, a family man who radiates integrity. Working under him are Terry McCandless , a cocky and corrupt detective and Preston Cruz, Jamie’s well-respected boyfriend who might not be all that he appears. Helping Jamie is her confidante and paralegal, Vi, an expert at digging up case-winning information. As Jamie and Roy spar in and out of the courtroom, dark secrets simmer behind every door and threaten to tarnish the genteel facade of seductive Charleston.

Salem - WGN

St. George - FX

OYNIInH.jpg

The multi-camera ensemble comedy revolves around the chaotic life of a recently divorced working class Mexican-American turned successful entrepreneur. In the sitcom, Lopez will portray a man who struggles to balance his demanding ex-wife, his 11-year-old son, his overbearing mother who just moved in, and his uncle, as well as his new role as a philanthropist “giving back” by teaching history once a week at a night school.

FX has given an initial 10-episode order to the project and if it meets pre-set ratings thresholds over the 10-episode run, the network will trigger an additional 90-episode pickup the way it did last year on Anger Management.

Surviving Jack - Fox

Surviving Jack is a new comedy based on best-selling author Justin Halpern’s autobiographical book, “I Suck at Girls.” Set in 1990s Southern California, the ensemble series is about a man becoming a dad, as his son is becoming a man, in a time before “coming of age” was something you could Google.

In a tented field hospital on the coast of France, a team of doctors, nurses and women volunteers work together to heal the bodies and souls of men wounded in the trenches. The hospital is a frontier: between the battlefield and home front, but also between the old rules, hierarchies, class distinctions and a new way of thinking.

The Divide - WE tv

PCH537d.jpg

From AMC Studios comes WE tv's first scripted series - The Divide.

The Divide is an exploration of personal morality and how all people – especially ambitious people – struggle with the shades of gray found in the absence of a simple, ordered moral universe. The show probes how truth coexists in the modern justice system alongside ambition, ethics, politics and race.

As an impassioned case worker with The Innocence Initiative, Christine Rosa delves into the case of a death-row inmate she believes was wrongly convicted of a young family’s heinous murder 11 years earlier. She chases down new evidence in a search for the truth and confronts an equally passionate district attorney, Adam Page, whose view of justice is colored by shades of gray.

Throughout the journey, Christine and Adam’s pasts resurface as they are faced with the question of one man’s guilt or innocence intertwined with their own personal histories.

The Legacy - BBC4

The Danish series (airing on DR as Arvingerne) is a modern family portrait – a depiction of the 68 generation and their children … that examines what it means to be a family in a time when traditional patterns of family life have undergone radical change.

The Musketeers - BBC One/BBC America

The Musketeers is set on the streets of seventeenth century Paris, where law and order is more an idea than reality. More than King Louis XIII’s personal bodyguards, Athos, Aramis and Porthos stand resolutely for social justice, for honor, for valor, for love – and for the thrill of it. Luke Pasqualino will star as D’Artagnan alongside Musketeers Tom Burke as Athos, Santiago Cabrera as Aramis and Howard Charles as Porthos. Together they are a crack-team of highly trained soldiers.

The Night Shift - NBC

r3JjxPW.jpg

At San Antonio Memorial, those who work the 7pm – 7am shift are a special breed. Welcome to the night shift, where every day is a fight between the heroic efforts of saving lives and the hard truths of running a hospital. After a grueling tour of duty in Afghanistan, adrenaline junkie TC Callahan became accustomed to combat, but he could have never guessed that his toughest battles would be fought right here at home. TC and his irreverent team of late night docs know how to let off steam with the casual prank or two, but when lives are at stake, they are all business.

Unfortunately, the night shift is now under new management, and boss Michael Ragosa is more interested in cutting costs than helping people. But TC has never met a rule he couldn't break, or a person he won't stand up to. And it's clear that not even Jordan, TC's ex-girlfriend and now Ragosa's second in charge, has a chance at keeping him in line. If Ragosa wants a war... he'll get one.

The Red Road - Sundance

The Red Road is a hard-hitting drama that revolves around a local cop struggling to keep his family together while simultaneously policing two clashing communities: the small town where he grew up and the neighboring mountains, home of a Native American tribe. After a terrible tragedy and coverup occurs involving the cop’s wife, an unholy alliance is forged between the cop and Phillip Kopus, a dangerous member of the tribe that will come back to haunt all involved.

The Smoke - Sky 1

The Smoke is a high octane, emotionally gripping, funny, and occasionally outrageous ensemble drama about what it's really like to be a firefighter in Britain today. And it's tough trying to be a hero in a world that dismisses and disregards heroes. But whatever White Watch might go through, they are never beaten down, and they are always able to fall back on one another. As irreverent and emotionally charged as it is thrilling, you'll never before have seen a show about firefighters quite like The Smoke.

Those Who Kill - A&E

Those Who Kill" is based on a popular Danish crime series format inspired by the bestselling work of author Elsebeth Egholm. The series centers on Catherine Jensen (Chloë Sevigny), a freshly minted and incredibly smart police detective who tracks down serial killers. Jensen is also attempting to come to terms with her past by continuing to investigate her stepfather, who she suspects may be a serial killer, and her brother who went missing as a sixteen-year-old. Jensen enlists the help of Thomas Schaffer (James D'Arcy), a forensic psychiatrist, to help her get into the minds of serial killers, all the while luring Schaffer into her own personal investigation. Both characters possess a deep psychological understanding that connects them to the killers' victims and to the killers themselves.

For their first lesson, Danny takes the guys to an event hosted by his sister, Leslie, who is a single mom with dating difficulties of her own. At first, Danny's advice seems to pay off big-time: the shy guy talks to a girl, the no-filter dude learns it's never okay to ask a woman when she's due(!) and his nebbish roommate, Justin, goes home with a mystery woman. It's not until the next day that they figure out it was Danny's sister, Leslie! Talk about a bunch who just can't get lucky!

Awesome thread.

Planning to check out the following new shows assuming decent impressions:

True Detective
Klondike
Chozen
The Spoils of Babylon
Helix
Black Sails
Fargo
New Worlds
Penny Dreadful
The Musketeers
The Red Road
Turn

As usual, the big networks offer nothing of interest. Thank goodness for pay cable and more adventurous, smaller stations.

If Black Sails and True Detective are hits, I consider this to be a solid season for new shows. Big bonus points if AMC can Turn their game around (oh, yes, yes I did).

Great thread. Glad to see British shows in there too - saves me a job! I didn't know Brit Marling was doing a comedy for Channel 4. Very interesting...

What's the early word on The Assets? Of the bunch it sounds the most interesting to me. That said this whole list sounds generally more intriguing than what came out in the Summer/Autumn.

The early start to this year is very light on shows I am interested in. Nothing really until that Pirate show on Starz. Cancelling all my premium subscriptions until then.

Cool stuff I edited down what I am going to be watching. It is still a huge list but I can't watch as much TV as I used to.

BTW, when is The Americans coming back?

This poster pulses with an appeal so broad the typical restraints of our societies fall by the wayside.
Jenna Elfman in another likely failed NBC family comedy? And the guy from Whitney back as a lead in another NBC comedy? Yeesh.

I'll definitely be watching and doing the thread for The Americans. Just forgot to include it (and a couple other things) on my watch list. So much good tv!

Justified and Banshee are at the top of my list. Might take a gander at True Detective too.

Those are the only new series that jumped out as possibly good to me, and that's still with a lot of apprehension. Black Sails looks cool too but not cool enough to pay for Starz.

I guess I'll mostly be waiting to see if anything gets a lot of good buzz.

Great thread.

I'd list everything I plan on watching but it would be an embarrassingly huge amount of stuff. There isn't a single night that doesn't have at least one show I'm interested in and some nights (Sundays as usual, Tuesdays, and Fridays surprisingly) are going to be majorly overloaded.

In RatskyWatsky's posting order. I'll bold the few I really care about.

- Burning Love is still on? I thought E just wrapped up the second season? Did they say they're going to air the third?

Community, definitely. So hyped.

Still watching The Michael J Fox show, but I can't honestly recommend it.

Bob's Burgers is legitimately great. I want to compare it to (past) Simpsons greatness while emphasizing that it's its own thing, it's not a Simpsons ripoff.

Might as well finish out the string on Agents of SHIELD. So not hyped about this show any more, neither as a Marvel cinematic universe show (esp with its insane idea that superhuman powers are unlikely months after an alien invasion + rogue Norse god decimated NYC and was fought off by a giant green monster and Thor and a man in a flying mech suit) nor as a Whedon-esque show.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine was nearly my favorite comedy of the fall, and definitely favorite new comedy.

New Girl has been meh this whole season; the writing has been subpar and the acting has mostly descended to the level of the writing.

Mindy Project -- well, I hear it's gotten better. I've been more of a regular viewer since they picked up Adam Pally.

Trophy Wife has been really good.

Intelligence -- I might go for this at some point just to see what spy action on TV looks like now. Trailer looks like cheesy fun.

100 Days of Summer sounds super bad just because of what it is. A Bravo reality show? Hell no. I'm already cringing at the thought of Andy Cohen talking to these people.

Cougar Town - yay, it's back! CT is great. If you aren't watching it because of the name, get over it. They dropped the initial premise like five episodes into the first season. Now it's a hang-out sitcom, and it's loads of fun.

I'm watching Modern Family off and on these days.

Parks and Recreation is still really solid.

Raising Hope has played out its first half-season without Greg Garcia pretty well, actually. I'm still watching this regularly and liking it a lot.

Enlisted -- will tune in just for residual love for Cougar Town (was created by CT co-creator Kevin Biegel).

Helix. -- this is the new RDM show, right?

House of Lies -- I gave up on this a while ago, but the improv special House of Lies Live was so great I might get back in.

How I Met Your Mother -- why not.

Suburgatory -- I enjoyed it, I don't mind the upcoming cast changes. I will say it's been so long I almost wondered if it got cancelled and I had just forgotten.

Party Down South -- not gonna watch it anyways, but I'm annoyed this will mess up my future web searches for "Party Down".

Jerks with Cameras -- not my cup of tea necessarily, but might tune in once or twice out of friend (acquaintance) loyalty, as in I kinda sorta know someone working on this.

Hitrecord on TV! -- maybe. Who doesn't love JGL and an online community?

Broad City - oh hell yes. Did y'all know the pilot's available on Comedy Central's website? Go watch it now. It's great.

Is Rake supposed to be any good? The Fox ads I saw over the holidays were a mess.

Might hate-watch Mixology (nothing against it per se, just hate that ABC killed Happy Endings for this) at some point in the future when I can batch a few eps together. The trailer isn't good.

The Americans -- I'm really not much for dramas, but this one really grabbed me. Will definitely watch.

Hannibal - got good reviews and Bryan Fuller still has a lifetime pass. But I never did get into the first season; maybe I should catch up.

Resurrection - promo looked good and I'm a sucker for the premise.

Whose Line is it Anyway? -- at this point I'm only tuning in if the guest improviser is someone I want to watch.

Inside Amy Schumer -- had a good first season, I'd watch the second season.

Orphan Black -- I really need to catch up on this; it sounds like something I'd like.

I'm not rooting against David Walton or NBC's About a Boy, but I've never found Walton that funny either. =/

Babylon - I have a crush on Brit Marling.

Bad Teacher - man, doesn't seem like CBS has a lot of faith in this show. I want to watch for Ari Graynor and showrunner Hilary Winston (wrote on a few shows I liked, and more importantly I liked her book.)

Playing House -- BFFs was terrific, and I hope this is basically BFFs with a tweaked premise. Gotta love that one of the official trailer on YouTube is titled "Best Friends"... BTW, the view counts on their YT videos are gruesomely low. I think I'm gonna start panicking right now.

Surviving Jack gets an episode or two just for Bill Lawrence. Same with Undateable. (man, he has had a fantastic year this year, getting Ground Floor on as well as these two. Speaking of which, I've been watching Ground Floor. It's probably the most tolerable new multicam in years.)

Veep. Great season 1, great season 2, will probably still be great.

Hadn't even heard of Space Dandy till just now, but that's an automatic pickup just for Shinichiro Watanabe.

I might watch The 7.39.

Crisis -- wait wait wait, Hollywood greenlit two DC hostage-taking dramas in one year? And they even cast two actors often confused for each other in the two? FANTASTIC.

The Night Shift has a hilariously bad promo poster but I kinda want to spite-watch it just because of how good Nick Kroll's performance was in the Childrens Hospital episode "The Night Shift". Actually, that whole episode was great.

BTW, I think your post also missed mentioning Rick and Morty. I saw the premiere on Youtube and liked it.

(I'm so sorry this post went on so long.)

Ratsky, you saucy little minx. I love your TV threads so much. Cheers!

But I can't even think about this right now, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much to process. I'll hammer it out this weekend.

It took some riots to get this thread started but there it is.
Good job Ratsky!

Gonna go over the OP to create a list later. Not picking up too much new shows. Want to catch up on some older stuff.

For the shows statring/continuing in January:
- Sherlock
- Justified
- Shameless
- Supernatural

February:
- Hannibal
- Vikings

March:
- Suits

April:
- Game Of Thrones

Been a while since I had so many TV shows to look forward to. I did a Hannibal marathon last week with season 1, which was the first time I watched it, and I was pleasantly suprised. I'm happy to see that the 2nd season is starting up next month!
