What are your biggest gaming hardware mispurchases

SmokedMeat

Hori Real Arcade Pro 3 arcade stick. Modded with Seimitsu buttons and ball top. Rarely used it, and should really sell it.

Xbox One: I was on the verge of building a PC, and was researching it all to death. Wound up getting cold feet, and just figured I’d stick to consoles - and so I bought an Xbox One. I was never really happy with it, and once it was announced that they were putting all their games on PC I sold it, and built my first PC.

That’s really it for me.

Hold onto your panties
Nintendo DS and Mario 64.

Absolutely unplayable with the stylus.
Likewise, although I don't remember using the stylus much for it. My gripe was the texture filtering and I still had my N64 with the original.

Others I regret buying: My first PS3. It's one of 2 consoles in my lifetime that I bought 1-year after launch (my rep is to only purchase 4-5 years after launch). I was completely unaware at the time it didn't have the BC emulator and had sold my PS2 a few weeks prior. The library of games at launch were not my forte either. I sold it a few months later. Twist: I've purchased the Slim and Super Slim since and like it slightly better.

I've purchased/sold/repurchased Wii's. The first I bought at a Gamestop and never opened (sold after a few weeks). The second was the black model and sold it for the OG w/ the GC emu and control inputs.

The xbox one because it was flaming garbage. I haven't really used my series X much since beating GOTG in 2021 so that too but not really.

1. Pokemon Mini. What a stupid handheld
2. GeForce 2 Hercules 3D Prophet GTS Pro. Back in the day, the minimum of additional power didn´t change that much
3. Game & Watch Mario Bros. What a stupid handheld.
4. C64 Joystick Quickshot 2, when I could have a Competition Pro
5. Wii Fit / Ring Fit Adventure

32X - having been so invested with my Genesis and Sega CD, I thought this would be an awesome way to bring all the arcade 2D brawlers and fighters into the home. Sold it under an year later and bought a PS 1.
Xbox One S digital - only bought this to play the titles of that gen that were not available for PC. Played maybe 10 hours on it.
Console X Max - got curious about it, it is absolute dog shit, my Shield TV runs every emulator better.

I think I've owned 3 fight sticks since ps3/360 era. Still have one, those were all dumb purchases as I never used any of them but a couple hours.
Xbox One S - then MS announced every title would be on PC. Oh and I bought an arcade stick for that piece of shit to play Killer Instinct. So I had 4 sticks total. Almost a grand down the drain in just fight sticks.

A big regret I have for selling something is my Fanatec wheel setup a couple years ago.

I've made plenty of bad purchases in just games, but no point listing them all. Shit happens.

Still have these if anyone's interested >.>

HOLY SHIT! I forgot about this thing. I have exactly 2 movies for it. King Kong and Transformers. YEA I'm changing my post to this.

I remember my justification for HD DVD over blu-ray at the time was "HD DVD is self explanatory! A normal consumer will see an HD DVD and a blu-ray on the shelf, and will immediately understand that HD DVD is the high definition version of a DVD, but will have no idea what blu-ray means!"

I still think it was sound logic, but obviously it didn't pan out that way :messenger_grinning_smiling:.

None really. I knew what I was getting to even if didn't get to use some of the consoles I have bought. For example, I loved my PSP and Vita as they helped my flying anxiety on a few trips, but in the end I probably played both for less than 100 hours.

Haha, I did a lot of research and a lot of smarter people than me rightfully predicted that Blu-ray will prevail so I went with it.

I remember a lot of arguments were about porn. I might be mistaken, but I vaguely remember something about porn being released on HD DVD and not Blu-ray so a lot of people thought HD DVD will win.

PSVR1 after Sony abandoned it.
PS3 Logitech racing wheels that aren't supported on PS4/PS5.
Wireless Turtle Beach headset isn't supported on PS4/PS5.

All caused by decisions from Sony to end compatibility for devices from their previous console. I am so incredibly happy on PC now that I genuinely thank them for giving me the incentive to switch.

Nintendo Switch, I just let my girlfriend have it really. I've played a few games, but now PC emulation is BETTER than the actual Switch it's better to just avoid the machine altogether.

I just went and checked. It's not reds, it's blue.
I find it so annoying to use.

Ah that makes sense then. These things are very much personal preference, you should try out red and browns if you get the chance, you can get sample kits for not too much money and then decide which one you like best in terms of feel and sound.

I'm holding out on PSVR2 because of this. However I bought a ton of games and got a lot of fun out of psvr1. But Yea the Abandonment issue and the money I already spent is now a total waste.
Waiting to see Quest 3 and whatever Apple does.

Game Boy Advance, that i pretty much just used to play Advance Wars, then the GBA SP came out and i sold it to buy the new model, and kept just playing the same game. Ended up selling it realising that most Nintendo 1st party games are just not for me.

I tried using the trick of putting some o-rings on the caps. It did help a bit, but not enough for my liking. I really prefer something more silent.
Most mechanical keyboards have another issue. Where I live almost all use an US layout. This means that writing some words in Portuguese becomes a bit complicated, because of some symbols.
There is also a period of adaptation, as some keys are not in the same place.

Played it maybe twice. Was too much of a hassle to set up and play. I was young and easily swayed by the wow factor. I ended up selling it for way more than I bought for, so it's all good.

Xbox elite Series 2 controller. Already sent it in for warranty replacement, got the replacement back, and I still prefer some of my other controllers over it. Wish I could get my money back

Wii U probably. I didn't hate it, but I also never used it. But I had a great time playing Zombie U on it.

I had a PS4 for a little while but sold it because I wasn't really interested in the exclusives and I felt dumb paying for two online subscriptions between that and my Xbox. Also all my friends were on Xbox so I did all my multiplayer stuff on there.

Unlike a lot of people I really enjoyed the Kinect. Dance central was really fun at parties. I had fun with Gunstringer.

I bought this leg strap for the Switch version of Wii Sports not realizing it only really worked for one game in the collection. So maybe that's my biggest regret. What a scam.

Edit: I don't know why I remembered this, but when I was younger I remember visiting my cousin and seeing that he had a Game.COM when it first came out. He grew up in a family that didn't have a lot of money and I was shocked that he had it. Not because I thought it was cool but because it was obviously trash and he used up all his points with his parents to get something so dumb. Couldn't believe it.

I don´t think I ever regretted purchasing console hardware. Even if I sold and gave away some due to not being my thing, I managed to squeeze a couple of good hours out of it so we are all good. One example would be the Nintendo Wii. I fell for the hype because all my friends raved on about it and bought one. Discovered very quickly that motion control and the games wasn´t what I wanted, but I played Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime Corruption and that rail shooter Resident Evil, and I had a lot of fun with those games before I gave the console away to my nephew.

Build a custom one. That way you can use your preferred switches, keycaps, layout, etc.

Playstation VR 1. Thought I was looking through a milk bottle. Played it for about a week and sold it. Also the original Xbox One. I wish I just waited for the One S. That's how it should have launched.

I think I've enjoyed everything I've ever purchased on some level and I've owned pretty much everything released in North America since 1986 with the exception of 3D0, Neo Geo and some of the more esoteric devices. But all of the mainline platforms to be sure. I actually love the Jaguar, but only for Tempest 2000 and Defender 2000. I can see a lot of people being disappointed with it.

Nintendo has been the one to let me down most often. N64 was the only console I ever sold. It felt like every game I played aside from Mario 64 was 24 frames per second of Vaseline-coated gameplay. And PS1 just captivated me at the time so I had blinders on. Wii was fun for a minute but the platform quickly devolved into shovelware madness. I enjoyed Wii U when they made good use of the tablet controller but mostly it made me wonder why I bought it.

Playstation 5. After playing Cyberpunk on it (the PS4 Covid lockdown street density version), Spider-Man and somethinge else, it went dormant for about 6 months. Then the controller developed stick drift for no logical reason. Finally, the PS store didn't have regional prices so every game was $70 US plus Mexico's IVA and digital game tax. Ended up being like $90 per game while I could get the same thing on PC for half the price or lower.

Sold it on ebay but some Fed Ex delivery guy from Tijuana stole it during its journey. Good riddance.

pentium 4 cpu
didnt know much about gaming bottlenecks at the time.
had an amd cpu, and thought maybe a p4 could help a lot in games.
saved my money and switched to the p4.
all in all, very small difference in performance.

sega CD & 32X
bought it ~10 years ago because i never had them as a kid.
annoying setup.
barely any good games.
sega cd disc access sucks... mortal kombat 2 has to pause to load a special move in the middle of a match.
never play it.... but probably still wont sell it.

xbox one x
bought it because RDR was too blurry on ps4 pro for my tastes.
sold it after a year.

hated the menus.
2 controllers had issues and had to be replaced.
controller analog sticks were loud as hell.
console developed a weird whine before i sold it.
the couple x360 games i wanted to play on it werent compatible.
rare replay sucked.
tried and tried but couldnt find any games i wanted to buy for it (that i couldnt get on PC).

ended up not even liking RDR that much, ha.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
A tie between Wii U and PS4.

Wii U because I grew annoyed over the systems couldnt decide if it was a stationary or a handheld machine, and PS4 because I mainly bought it for TLOU. Not a bad system, its just not worth buying a system for one game.

In hindsight... Atari Jaguar, lol. As a kid I loved it, because of Alien Vs Predator, DOOM, and Wolfenstein 3D. But as an adult, wtf was I thinking? Lol. I didn't have a PC at the time, so it explains a lot considering those were some of the best console ports of DOOM & Wolfenstein.

Runner-up probably Wii U.

Steam controller and steam link - utterly pointless.

Nintendo 3DS - trying to re-create the magic of getting an Advance or DS - it failed.

PS Vita - just too fiddly - the thumbsticks were appaling.
