Yep. You can read along the thread, the subject was covered before.

For example, you can legally import thru' Amazon, with 100% taxes we'll pay about R$2000, half of what is being proposed by Sony Brazil.

That's why it's so ridiculous.

Sorry, misread the thread, I thought most were talking about illegal importation. Never mind.

Sony think that there is demand and think people will buy it at that price anyway. Stop the conspiracy theories of MS being evil and bribing politics so they add extra tax on Sony's toys. Of Sony being a special company that doesn't know how to take advantage of the loopholes in the taxing laws as evil MS surely knows and does.

The PS Vita is not being taxed as much as the PS4 is. Why is that??

Well, to be fair, portables have a different IPI (industrialized goods tax) than portables (20%, instead of 50% for consoles). But I still agree with all you said before. Goverment and taxes are only part of the story.

FYI, almost every hardcore gamer in brazil don't even pass in the front of oficial shop, everything is from the gray market, for exemple gamers in São Paulo buy at St. Efigênia, half price or less than the oficial price and a I do this since SNES days

Maybe it's a joke announcement or Sony's PR stunt?

This can't be real if Xbone is half the price there, it makes no sense.

Has Sony confirmed it??

It's not a PR stunt. That makes no sense.

It's the official price.

What's the official price for PS3 and PS Vita over there?

Considering the PS Vita launched recently (2012) and its price is roughly half of PS4 price now, we could estimate what would be a reasonable price for PS4.

It still smells fishy, it's borderline unbelievable they managed to make PS4 more expensive than the bone.

So now it seems Sony is done preparing an excuse:
Obrigado a todos vocês que compartilharam seus comentários sobre o alto preço do PS4 no Brasil. Nós também estamos frustrados com o preço de $4.000 reais, e em breve vamos poder mostrar as razões. Obrigado pela sua paixão e fiquem ligados para mais informações.
We thank all of those who shared their comments about the high price of the PS4 in Brazil. We too are frustrated with the R$4000 price tag, and will soon show you the reason. Thank you for your passion and stay tuned for more information.

Please be gullible.

This new post was made by the Latin America General Manager, while the price announcement was made by the Brazil GM.

Maybe (ok, of course it did) shit critical hitted the fan and the higher-ups felt the need to show up. I`ll try to be optimistic.

Can't wait to see the bullshit excuse that Sony will "announce".Actually... Why make an announcement of this?

"Hey guys we have a good reason for this price but we can't tell you right now, kthx bye." - wtf Sony.

Next week should bring an interesting announcement that changes a couple of perspectives on this subject. (Sorry about the teasing. Can't really say anything more than this.)

Now I just wonder how Stanley will "explain" the reasons behind this pricing.

This is probably an amalgamation of different issues.

As mentioned earlier, Brazilian taxes are absurd. You can't apply the Individual Import taxes (60% or 100%, depends who is sending you the stuff - another individual or a company, and the region you live in) to a company - they pay different taxes, with a bunch of deciding factors that we're not aware of.

There's the fact that videogames fall into the gambling taxes bracket (computers do not, for instance).

But tax alone can't be the culprit here. It probably has to do with lack of actual stock and the fact that Sony Brasil knows that everybody will buy the illegally imported one anyway, so instead of charging 2899 or whatever is the actual cost of the machine, they just said "fuck it" and put it at 4k.

There's people that will buy it at that price, and the people that are going to buy the illegally imported ones would never buy the officially released one, as they could never get the official price down enough to match an illegal imported unit, that doesn't pay taxes at all.

Well said. And there has been a history of this from Brazil trade polices. The retail companies in Brazil will need their cut in order to make profits in that environment. Eventually Sony will subsidize the cost but not at launch.

It seems they have a press conference next Thursday in SP?

You're so wrong it is sad. The economy isn't booming(it looked like it would for a brief moment to those who were unfamiliar with our reality), you need to update your facts.

If we need something(and we do) it is to become more competitive and to do so we need a simplified tax system and way less taxes, less government intervention in the economy(right now it controls gas prices, exchange rates, most of the credit available, it actively promotes monopolies in various sectors and so on) not mention many other reforms.

All that isn't going to happen, the protests you might have seen on TV were asking for more government intervention(it started specifically with the demand for the government to freeze public transportation tickets and as of late it has been dominated by public workers demanding more privileges), we are clearly going the wrong way.

In the last 10 years we've manage to destroy most of the structural pillars left by the previous administration (inflation targets, the law of fiscal responsibility and a floating exchange rate), we are just living a long summer.

About we taking "your" jobs, you can't pick and choose the effects a globalized economy will have, you can't both have your cake and eat it too (a PS4 costs 399$ for a reason). Plus Brazil isn't India or China, you're not exporting\losing that many jobs to us(we are not so competitive, the things we produce are expensive as well).

I wish there was a way to give you an thumbs up! :)

Aww, c'mon man, not even a hint? Good news or bad news?
Is it related to the new factory in Manaus?

Wish we could have good news about this.

There is no excuse when I can import it from Amazon LEGALLY and pay half the price they are charging here.

Let's be honest here: why would you buy anything in a regular store?

Good question. Now how much of the profit margin agreement is related to the retail stores in Brazil that want a cut of that profit on launch day? Or do you think Sony should pay for your local business profit by essentially dropping the price to $99 US? We already know that many Brazilian consumers will bypass the middleman and just import the PS4. At least until Sony drops the price and/or subsidizes the PS4 just for Brazil.

Sony is still losing money on every PS4 built. Not as much as the $600 to $900 ratio as the PS3 (which explains the late 2010 release in Brazil the last time). So are you still on this "Sony is greedy" kick when it seems to have to do with your countries tariff/trade law and local business agreements? The social class imbalance and business agreements are a matrix in your country. It gives me a headache.

I've heard some people say they're going to buy the XBone because of this, even tough they were going to buy it from Paraguay in the first place. Just out of spite.

This is really unfortunate and Sony doesn't know that even if they do change the price eventually, the longer this drags on, the worst it looks on their part.

Just curious, how much does the Wii U cost in Brazil?

It's good news, yeah.

They do. A couple of other companies will hold one that day too.

Nintendo hasn't released the Wii U officially here.

With this gaining some traction, I can imagine a scenario where Sony intervenes with whatever the fuck Sony Brasil is doing to avoid damaging the brand.

We'll see.

Below is some historical PS2 and PS3 pricing in Brazil. Here's a little history...

"In November 2009 Sony released the PlayStation 2 in Brazil for US $461, and now nine months later Sony brings the PlayStation 3 to the country, with a launch price of around US $1,130."

...and last generation Sony subsidized some of the import cost.

"According to Anderson Gracias, division manager of Sony PlayStation Brazil, the original price (PS3) was to be 2,499 Brazil Reais, or $1,408. In order to stay competitive with the Xbox 360, which sells for R $999 to R $1,599 in the country, Sony is subsidizing part of the cost...Believe it or not, that is actually $278 less than originally planned from Sony Style stores for the South American country."

What's funny is that this story comes out every generation as if it's some breaking story.

Just look on Wikipedia for the PS3 launch. Ever think there's a reason the $600 US PS3 was never released in 2006 in Brazil?? Think about it. It would have cost the price of a small car! That's why it was release in 11 August 2010 in Brazil.

We seek to understand the price of R $ 3,999 of the PlayStation 4 -- Taxes are a big problem, but there are other factors that make the price of the console is high (Translated)

Heitor de Paola | 10/17/2013 19:49:37 - Updated at 10/18/2013 12:07:10

The PlayStation 4 is expensive , so nobody discusses. And we know about the tax burden of our country makes many products have a higher value here, showing a large discrepancy even when compared to our neighboring countries . Even so, when Sony said that 60% to 70% of the price of their next console is due to fees, many shook her head, not believing that the change could be so.

However, there are more factors focusing on the whole operation required to bring the PlayStation 4 to the country, which would explain the high value of the console. If we take into account only the taxes, as explained by tax lawyer Fernando Vaisman, the account no battery. According to calculations Vaisman, the total load would be 138%. This percentage, applied to the value of $ 399 charged on the console in the U.S. (which already has the profit of the shopkeeper there) would take the total to just over £ 2000, out of £ 4000 announced by Sony.

Except that there are many other values, or difficult to compute or that are not released by the companies, which add up and significantly increase the final price. "Without knowing the resale margin'll never know what the total tax burden," Vaisman said, making it clear that your calculation is an approximation based on the taxes that we can apply to the type of product into which game consoles fit.

What ordinarily is not taken into account are the costs of operation and logistics, in addition there are various, they are also more expensive in Brazil than in other countries. "There's freight to the country, the cost of transport and storage, which are larger than that of neighboring countries such as Chile and Argentina," said Philip Quintas, customs broker. Second Thursdays, the reason given by Sony that up to 70% of £ 4000 are derived from fees, is plausible.

There are also income from tenants Brazilian (whose exact value is not released for consoles, but is less than about 30% of gross profit for games) and the fact that the PlayStation 4 is now ready to come to Brazil. Quintas said that if a product is brought here until 70% done, it is considered as pieces and parts, which reduces the tax levied on him. The assistance of Sony told us that the console will come to Brazil already mounted, making the rates are even higher (any product that comes 80% complete is considered ready).

Another type of cost that usually do not consider is that caused by the difficulties involved in logistics. "I doubt anyone knows all of taxation law in Brazil," said Francisco Zavascki also tax lawyer. According Zavascki, the very complication and bureaucracy of our tax area make logistics costs increase. Exemplifies "a study showed that the Swedish automaker needed two people to operate in the sector tax. A automaker of the same company in Brazil, requires 200 people in the area."

After application of all taxes that are in incididos tax imposed (or cascade), Farm estimates that we consider almost 200% tax on the original price. After that there is the application of the ICMS, which varies from state to state and is paid on top of the price has changed by other taxes, and profit from tenants. Added to this the current high price of the dollar and the beiramos £ 4000 announced by Sony.

In 2010, before the start of production of the Xbox 360 in Brazil , Microsoft was able to reduce the price of its console (R $ 1,249 to R $ 999 in arcade model) and leave it below the amount charged at the time by PlayStation 3, both of which had equivalent prices in the U.S.. This was possible because, according to Guilherme Camargo, former marketing manager for Xbox Brazil, in an interview with Gizmodo , there was a global subsidization of Microsoft that the Xbox 360 sold in the Brazilian market at a reduced cost. When questioned, both Sony and Microsoft declined to comment on whether such a subsidy exists for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
