Resident Evil VII needs more love - Spoilers inside!

Wasn't that dated for Spring at one point? I don't mind it coming out in Oct. or something if it is of decent length and creepy.

There were files on the RE7 disc that seemed to paint it as Resident Evil 7 X Call of Duty, so all bets are off.

They did say the were nearly content complete for the original release date, so hopefully this delay means Uncharted: The Lost Legacy levels of content bloat.

And Mercenaries! They'd have enough characters.

A stand-alone expansion rather than just a straight DLC could be really cool depending on its quality. Hopefully it resurfaces sooner rather than later.

That's apparently what the second DLC is. More of an expansion that's set in a new area and such. Though not stand alone

I'm just glad it lived up to one of the best game reveals of all time.

I just want more of it. I sort of feel like they should have had the 'Banned Footage' DLC as part of the base game to beef up the experience, especially as it's tied closely to the core game narratively, even if it meant charging for the 'Not a Hero' DLC that should be coming.

I think you're going to have a tough time selling any full-price game that's just an 8-10 story mode, regardless of quality. A secondary mode, which has been Mercenaries for Resident Evil games, is a must I think.

really, really love resident evil 7, but, yeah, this's dead on: the stuff that they're charging extra for should've been free, & vice versa. especially mercenaries - not into it myself, but it's pretty much an expected staple at this point, & should've been included...

Yeah seriously, that is probably my biggest issue with the game, was a lack of a side mode or such, least one that isn't locked behind DLC.

I had to stop after that dinner scene, my heart couldn't take the suspense, even with the lights on. Games where I know people are chasing me (like Alien: Isolation) scare the absolute shit out of me ):

Its quite good, still in my top 10 so far, but I did have some issues with it.

Wasn't fond of where the story ended up going, and Ethan and Mia are kind of bland characters. The game also has a noticeable decrease in quality after
defeating Marguerite and getting the sample
.

I could take or leave the first person view. It was probably there to push VR and it seemed like it accomplished that task well but I played it normally and found it still had decent atmosphere and whatnot, but nothing that wouldn't have worked in traditional third person or fixed camera.

In terms of structure and design, the game also felt like REmake on training wheels at times, what with the Baker Estate being pretty small, re use of puzzles, and very minimal enemy variety. As far as fighting goo monsters in a survival horror-esque environment goes, Prey did it better.

lol you literally never started the game
I loved the game. Wish it had a raid/mercenaries mode.

Ok it's not quite the same but fun little diversion

It's a shame the final 1/4th of the game sucked so much, because the first 3/4 are better than anything that has been released this year.

Pretty much how I feel. What it does right it does so so well, and I wish I could rank it higher in the series than I do because it's so close to being what I want for the series. But it feels like they progressively ran out of time or money or both because the farther you get into the game the level design becomes worse, the environments become less visually interesting, the Bakers vanish, and the really poor enemy variety stands out like a sore thumb.

But it's still GOTY for me thus far, but it's gonna have a tough time competing with Evil Within 2 I imagine which, based on the first game and what we've seen from trailers, likely walk circles around RE7's weak spots.

Back to the good stuff tho:
-The atmosphere, like OP mentioned is one of the best in the series. I'm a huge sucker for the dilapidated, grungy, rural gothic aesthetic that this game and RE4's village has, and many areas of this game were artistically composed much like the gorgeous backgrounds of REmake. It looked so good and to do so at 60fps was really impressive.

-I loved the small scale of the game. It felt isolated and intimate. You get a really strong sense of place, and the Baker home had an incredibly strong identity in every single room.

-the combat is pretty great. It's a great usage of the FPS perspective with precision aiming while replicating a lot of the claustrophobia and careful positioning that's present in the classic games. The block is a nice addition as well.

-The boss fights are some of the absolute best in the series. They're intense, creative, full of personality, have a ton of details and choice in them, and have a cinematic feel without stripping the player of agency. It's just a shame there are so few.

-The Bakers are great. Very amusing antagonists, especially Jack. They almost make up for how tired the molded are.

-It's probably the scariest game in the series. RE has never been particularly scary, but I was just playing some of my madhouse run today and I still get unsettled just walking around the house despite knowing what's coming (bar a few madhouse remixes).

I happened to finish the game today. Took my time with it. I talked a lot of trash before based on the marketing and demo and found some of that didn't pan out in the final game. Still found it was an uneven package.

Was happy to feel some of the Resident evil vibe in parts. However the atmosphere stayed too Saw-ish and generic psychological horror for my tastes. I prefer the b movie sci-fi monster-on-the-loose horror style of the originals.

I love the first person view and was in awe in several areas of the game. The engine is really interesting, sometimes it's like you're playing something prerendered and sometimes you have really flat and low res stuff right in front of your face. The engine doesn't handle foliage or day lit scenes well at all.

On the flip side, the game doesn't give you the tools to handle up close combat in first person. Its unwieldy, cumbersome and frustrating. I never once felt like it was my fault when I died, it felt like the game was constantly cheating me. It desperately needed a dodge and stamina system to balance the small areas, slow movement and barrage of close encounters.

No need to mention the enemies other than I did not have the positive reaction to the Bakers and their "stalker" gameplay that others seem to have had. In my opinion, the game again does not have the necessary mechanics to facilitate hiding or evading causing those portions to feel cheap and pace killing. The level design doesn't even seem built for it because so many areas are closed off and the hallways are tiny... If they spot you they move faster then you... you can't look behind you or dodge or peek around corners or throw things to make sounds.... I just.. don't get how people liked those parts of the game.

Finally, while everyone keeps saying it's a return to form it felt very Resident Evil-lite to me. The puzzles are easy and the game is linear throughout even after opening most of the Baker estate. There's never more than one place to go or one puzzle to solve at a time. So while several rooms connect most of the backtracking is to pick up extra supplies or weapons. The estate also seemed very small by Resident Evil labrynth standards. You usually pick up a special item and immediately use it to open the next area a room or two away... Meanwhile, the puzzles basically solve themselves. Only Lucases trap had me pause for a moment.

But I'll give them props for giving it the best shot in a long time. Wish they'd take another wack at that style (minus anything resembling stalker gameplay). I feel first person is a perfect fit for this series with a few tweaks.

I don't have the time to respond to all of your thoughts on the game but I thought this was the most interesting paragraph. Your suggestions or expectations (dodging, peeking, hiding, subverting) didn't come across to me as things that needed to be in the game at all. Running from Daddy Baker wasn't really ever about hiding. There were actually a lot of loops in the parts with him where you could lose him and the game expected you to take action around him, not necessarily wait for him to go away. It's never a sneaking mission. It's an encounter. What was really interesting to me about your thoughts vs my experience is that I was so happy you weren't expected to hide or subvert the Bakers! I'm really tired of that in horror games. Being forced to deal with them was the most fun part of the game for me.

I really hope they refine the style of game. I adore RE7, and hope that they return to this format again, even with its issues.

I really need this game's equivalent to RE2.

still my game of the year so far by a mile, shame most of the dlc has been shit so far. That poker one, gross.

So is the next dlc included in the season pass being pushed even further out after the free chris one?

Quality over quantity I'd say. For me Resident Evil 6 lasted about 5 hours longer than it needed to, it really overstayed its welcome by the end and because of that I enjoyed it less than if they had trimmed the fat, but game world size and game length are selling points now which is a shame.

Fantastic return of a series that had gone to action packed shits previously. I really enjoyed RE7. I liked the more gun happy ship levels too, they gave a nice change of pace.

A fantastic return, and I hope RE8 turns out similar.

RE7 is fantastic. Only real downsides is the flashback on the ship where it goes all action shooter, but beyond that there's not much wrong with it. Easily the best RE since 4.

I should be doing a video about it once this giant Super Mario 64/Banjo Kazooie one is done.

Pretty much my most pleasant surprise this year - genuinely loved every aspect of it.

The game has some really decent intentional comedic bits which I really appreciated.

And I sort of love that Ethan is a complete dick who just shrugs of pretty much all the crazy shit that goes down. The mold enemies didn't do it for me though.

I like the ship segment in theory, but it overstayed it's welcome.

I throughly enjoyed the first half. The second half was good, just not up the high standard of the first.

The son's section was very on rails and not as interesting for me, the boat section was eh.

I, like in most of these games, had been conserving ammo like crazy. I like the feeling of carelessly unloading everything I had worked to conserve in the last act. But this game in a way stole that experience by letting me go on a shooting rampage for free as a different character right before I would get a chance to. It's probably an unreasonable complaint, but there it is.

Another thing I like are the tapes. Even if they're optional, I feel those are essential to the story. Especially the Happy Birthday tape, where Lucas shows his sadistic little game. That ending though... damn.

Man, this was a really great game.

I think shortly after you kill Marguerite, it begins dropping in terms of quality.

Especially the boat section, along with when you're in the mines.

To go back, though, up until the point I mentioned, it's really fucking stellar.

Easily one of the most overrated games this generation, and I don't think it would be remembered as fondly within the coming years, if anything, this game needs a critical analysis. I really don't know how does it get so much praise when it hardly has any redeeming factors.

I would rather get an action oriented RE with fun gameplay, rather than have a midoicre RE with "horror" elements, the horror segments of RE4 were much more atmospheric and thematically more powerful compared to what was in 7 and that was an action focused game.

Thankfully TEW is there to satisfy my needs, and hopefully REV 3 will have a higher budget with the same direction as REV 2.

The game definitely fell flat when it moved away from the mansion. The atmosphere in there was awesome. Now, I generally dislike hide & seek type gameplay in modern horror games, but it was well presented in RE7. I loved the mix between campy and 'scary,' I never felt like I was forced to feel scared and it was really well designed. Just the later sections of the game lost all the charm. I think it would've been much better if they kept it all within the mansion and focus the story in there. If they kept the source of the disease within the house and let you uncover what happened through exploration, puzzles, looking into the past via videotapes etc. Could've been amazing.

Phenomenal game, I really hope they take their time and try to make "the RE2" of the RE7 style for the next one. I loved almost everything about it, the sound design especially; it was nauseatingly scary to try and play it with headphones on because it sounded like there was shit just constantly following you around the house. I just wish there was more enemy variety, since you basically fight two enemies with slight variants the entire game, the mine part was just kind of boring, and the ship got frustrating with its level design after a while. Other than that, great fun.

As soon as you leave the first area it begins a quite hard tumble downhill as soon as you reach the ship.

Those first few hours are great though.

It's a good game and a decent entry in the series but man, once you get to the barn, the game kinda lost me.

I noticed it's dip in subsequent playthroughs.

Not a popular opinion, but I think for all it's flaws, TEW had better highs.

I'm not too keen on the "being chased" and first-person shift, but it's still a good game and I commend Capcom for trying something difffrent. I'm mostly glad they stopped devolving the franchise into action games. I didn't mind RE5, but I was pretty annoyed by the direction RE4 took things.

The RE2 remake is what I'm most looking forward to, if it still exists... I just hope it's faithful like the original's remake. I prefer static cameras and the general flow the older games had.

SWEDISH PERFECTION
I completely loved the game. Found it a bit clumsy in intense situations where you had to move around quickly (as I do with most first person games admittedly)... and well, the game kind of changes pace towards the end, but I enjoyed that part as well. Still, the first area was amazing and I would love to see more of that. I hope they stick to the first person perspective in the future and let it evolve (without turning too much into an action game).

Didn't feel like a Resident Evil game to me, the first person perspective and no recognizable character just didn't quite do it for me, despite it being a solid chunk of code.

I vastly prefer every other RE to 7. I hope they go back to 3rd person with the next instalment, otherwise I'm not even gonna bother, I've had my fill of first person corridor horrors.

still waiting for news on Not a Hero ... :(
Yup

I'm absolutely dying to play more of this game, I already played through the main campaign about 10 times lol

Hell, thread is tempting me to do another run tonight

Only downside of this game are the forced walking sections and the unskippable cutscenes, outside of that it's almost perfect

Loved it. I haven't bought the previous two DLCs though. I'm waiting for the last two pieces of DLC before I jump back in.

underrated masterpiece, it's the best survival horror game in more than a decade

the most Resident evil game since Resident evil Cod Veronica

too bad when people see videos of the game they will think it's like those shitty cheap horror games like outlast and that kind of trash, but if they play it, they will know how amazing RE7 is, it's a true RE game

but since the sales are low, i don't think RE8 will be like RE7, thanks to the fans of RE6, Resident evil will die again after it's revival with RE7

They made an engine specialising in VR and have a ton of assets from RE7, and Capcom overall plans to release sequels to major franchises on a 2.5-3 year basis. They're not abandoning the RE7 style just because the RE6 remaster did well and RE7 slightly underperformed.

It's hands down the best RE game since Code Veronica and is my game of this generation. It's basically the 1st game with a new setting and in FPS and also the most terrifying game I've played in years .

It's a masterpiece

Best Resident Evil game since REmake. Such an amazing game. I wish I got to experience it in VR, but even without VR it's still a treat.

The best parts of this game was without the molded. The guest house, the Baker residence, the swamp house with old lady Baker. I missed zombies, but the Baker mutation was a good twist. One of the best Resident Evils.

I think the molded would've been more scary in less doses. I miss the zombies and I think they would've been terrifying in the smaller setting.

That said the baker family was well done and are some of the best villians in recent history.

Oh yeah, forgot the enemy variety wich was really lacking

Regular zombies would've been a nice addition as well in the later game areas (or just for merccs mode)

i want to love this game so much. i did love it.

then i got to the first section with the
molded
and i just do not have the fucking ammo or i guess skill to get by them
