Could it have sold more if Bruce was still on board? Very likely
We would never know really, regardless its the fastest selling Sony published game in history, at this point you can only argue something else could have sold better but its debatable as The Last Of Us 2 now sets that mark...
lots of people didn't appreciate the narrative choice.
Thats nice, a lot also don't care based on its record sales.

We can argue "lots of people" don't like Call Of Duty, its irrelevant when its moving 30 mill. It simply has no relevance. If you want to talk about how you personally feel about the game sure, but it has nothing to do with what I posted as I kept that about its sales figures sir. I never debated how you feel or how others feel about it etc. They are free to feel that way and I never stated otherwise.. I'm simply addressing this odd belief it should have sold better desptie it already being the fastest selling Sony published game in history and that it should have surpassed The last Of Us 1, yet that game itself didn't do 20 million in 1 year.

Its why you want it to be a personal thing or "lots of people" and or "could have" yet provide little evidence to support how that actually proves it should be surpassing The Last Of Us 1 in a little over a year. Its expecting a record on top of a record in a shorter time frame lol

I think the fact that this game is so divisive amongst certain gamers is just music too both ND and Sony's ears, ND set out to tell a story that they knew would be met like this and to challenge people's preconceptions and for some it didn't work or they simply couldn't see past the alleged "wokeness" but for others and especially me, killing Joel and then having to play that bitch grated but how they turned me around and got me on her side and then eventually to turn on Ellie was just brilliant, even now people are arguing bloody sales figures like that means anything to actual creatives like ND, nah they're loving the controversy and constant bickering that their story has evoked in people and let's face it what other developer has ever created a game like TLOU2

Maybe music to Neal's ears because it elevates his status as an Auteur as he got to tell this story, inspired by the middle eastern conflict on both sides. But to Sony? Only if it increased sales. Not sure if that happened. Maybe once we have current sales numbers...

Pretty clear progressive-focused TLOU2 wasn't well-received by the market. Facts. It should have sold at least 10m...
What a disingenuous post to try and compare TLoU II’s 3-day sale numbers with the sales of other games that have been on the market for 5+ years and try to use that to draw any meaningful conclusion.

If you mean in terms of divisive opinions, craploads of them. Its not hard to create controversy, loads of shitty and amateur writers love being edgy in hopes the shock content will make up for their lack of skill.

If you read manga or watch anime, theres a chance you might have heard about a series called Akame ga Kill. Much like TLoU2, it loves killing main characters left and right, some even at the very beggining. Much like TLoU2 it also attempts to humanize the villains halfway through the story by showing things from their perspective (including some that were responsible for the death of previously killed "heros"). And much like TLoU2, opinions on it are extremely divisive.

Many people see the obvious flaws in that story and criticize it for those. Despite all attempts to pose itself as 'serious' and 'mature', it can't hide the fact its characters are extremely shallow, barely getting any proper development, and that the plot is completely braindead. Yet, despite these things that should've made this a bad manga/anime, it has loads of fans lauding it for being "mature" or "challenging", as well as dismissing any critics saying they just can't handle the grimness. Sounds familiar? It should, because this pattern is all too common, especially in amateur storytelling circles.

What a piece of shit reply. I took this information from Wikipedia. This was and still is the only available data. Go find new data, update Wikipedia and post a new comparison. And after that go fuck yourself.
Who gives a shit if its on wikipedia? Anyone can check on Google that those 4 million in sales were within the first 3 days of release. Those God of War numbers were revealed, what, a month ago and it released in 2018? You trying to draw any meaningful conclusion with such a huge difference in days on the market is just silly.

Then you doubled down and said you bet TLOU 2 didn’t outpace the first one. So TLOU 2 sold 4 million copies in 3 days. TLOU sold 7 million copies in 13 months. If you honestly believe that TLOU 2 sold 4 million copies in 3 days, and then did not sell another 3 million copies in the following 13 months, I’d say you are just in heavy denial of the success of the sequel.

TLOU2
7 days - 4.04M
45 days - 5.83M = +1.79M new players

Spider-Man
7 days - 4.33M
45 days - 7.86M = +3.53M new players

GOW
7 days - 3.38M
45 days - 6.23M = +2.85M new players

etc

I don’t expect it to match the pace with Spiderman. How about TLOU? Do you really think it didn’t outpace the first game with TLOU selling 7 million in 13 months?

I think it should have been a massive, phenomenal, unequivocal success. Millions of people that are not as passionate about the intricacies of this hobby bought it despite the negative voices outside of mainstream media. But there is a sizable chunk of people who were turned off. Heck even the "trolls" on metacritic were 150,000! I think that is a lot of negative voices (obviously not all of these were negative). And this could have been avoided under different circumstances. How much did it sell - as a sequel to the TLOU it should have outsold it by 20-30 percent just by the fact that it had a massive marketing campaign AND it had an established fan base after the first game. It probably matched or surpassed TLOU - we will know this one day - but it certainly missed the mark, in terms of financial success and public appeal, that it could have hit.

To me almost any artist worth their salt creates something polarizing. Some people look at Joel like Batman and therefore any sign that he is a villian in another person's world and karma caught up with him is insulting. Maybe if ND treated the franchise like this it would be more universally loved but it would have suffered as a result. It's not NDs fault that the series is not what some people thought it was.

I mean, didn’t it still go on to win the most game of the year awards of all time that year? And if I’m not mistaken, not just critic awards, but the reader’s choice was also a landslide for TLOU II? Most people would consider that a massive success I would think.

And this could have been avoided under different circumstances.
Such as, Naughty Dog not getting hacked and having the plot leaked? I don’t disagree there. Or are you suggesting a change in the plot direction that’s geared more towards mass market appeal?

How much did it sell - as a sequel to the TLOU it should have outsold it by 20-30 percent just by the fact that it had a massive marketing campaign AND it had an established fan base after the first game. We know it sold 4 million copies in its first 3 days. Then you provided numbers of a growth of +1.8 million new players in 45 days on the market.
It took TLOU 13 months to reach 7 million copies. I would be shocked if TLOU II is not outpacing it by that 20-30% you’re saying it should have. We will know when the sales get updated like you said.

But just saying it certainly missed the mark when we don’t know what the internal projections for the game were is you trying to present your opinion as fact.

I’m sure Sony was privy to the direction of the story long before it was released and knew it was going to be divisive. And I do think the leak definitely put a damper on the launch of the game. But even with only the 3 day sales numbers for now, all indicators are that it definitely outpaced the first game. Don’t forget it took a re-release remaster on the PS4 to get anywhere close to the likes of God of War or Uncharted 4. Also received post-launch DLC in Left Behind to renew some interest as well.

Say what you want but if they remake TLOU1 it will be ten times more competent than what they did with the GTA trilogy.

It will be absolutely spectacular. No doubt. I wonder if art style will be changed somewhat. For example modernized character models. Probably environment density will be improved as well.

As long as they focus on good gameplay as the first priority. I don't want somebody's agenda/politics rammed down my throat as part of my entertainment decisions. Hollywood has already forcibly gone down this route and it's been shown time and again that it has a negative impact on sales/overall perception. Like these companies need to quit with their heavy handedness.

Most aren’t against you tending to yourself, and want to help also - most people are good natured. I certainly do. It is the approach that we vary on.

I’m adamant the woke overreach is making things worse. It’s bombastic, creates division - oppressor vs oppressed. Inflammatory language such as white supremacy, racist - being flung around all too casually.

That's all cool, but I'm adamant that people wanting to ignore the bad things in our society are keeping matters worst. The word racist is over used. But the work "WOKE" is also WAAAAY overused. That also creates division. I'm sure me and you agree on 80% on this issue. The sad part is the last 20% is where the biggest division gets created. Where can a person like me and you agree to disagree on a topic like this and we both can feel good about ourselves?

If you aren't as saddened or annoyed by people throwing the word "WOKE" around every time any non white\cis-gender\male character(s) is spoken about on GAF, then I don't think we can ever see eye to eye. And the division continues.

yep, woke left identity politics are dividing the nation; I'm all for helping minorities and all that, but we're doing it at the expense of white people, demonizing them accusing them of white privilege, slave-owners, colonialists, etc

Like what Condolezza Rice said about Critical Race Theory, She completely denounced it. She's all about equality; empowering black people and make black people proud of who they are, but her problem is that we're doing it at the expense of white people, we're making them feel guilty. And I'm totally against that ( I'm a visible minority myself)

and this is the last post I will make in this topic, cuz It's too close to be political (or may be it's already so)

And this poster is the poster child (lol) to my point above. Thinking that helping minorities equals harming white people is silly. But I'm assuming that's the "REAL" issue here. I can imagine being white in America (for many) today is alot more frustrating than it was back in the 80s and 90s. Back when all the best Quarterbacks looked and played like Dan Marino and not Lamar Jackson. When the best basketball players like Michael Jordan never spoke about pro-black issues like a Lebron James.

Being straight and white in the 80s and earlier, you were never challenged mentally or emotionally about what you country did and was doing to different races in America. Back then you let a word like f*ggot fly out with no remorse. You never had to hear the "other side" express their thoughts and feelings. There was no recourse to being a jerk in public to "those" people.

People like KingGhidorah KingGhidorah doesn't even know what Critical Race Theory is. People like him just want to continue the lie and propaganda that America had told many of us in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. If telling the truth about America history makes white people feel bad, then so what! Is it really the citizens of America's responsibility to make white people constantly comfortable, if it means we need to keep the lie alive? I have WAY more faith in my white brothers and sisters that they all aren't afraid to hear and read about the truth of America's history and present. I thought at the end of the day, most of them can handle it quite well.

I think you are very ignorant and need to get around better people.

I think you are very ignorant and need friends that don't look just like you. Get out of your mom's basement for a few weeks and get outside. Find a woman that likes you and just hold her hand. Life is better that way.

You support Critical race history.
Explains a lot.
American history eh? How about WORLD history and who started what 1st?
I can counter your bs with simple HISTORIC facts, but you aren't worth the ban.

If you want some DM me.

To the next bs you spewed...
I told you that you were ignorant as the predictable response you gave of course isn't true and completely misses the mark.
You have no clue about me and who I am.

1. What isn't true?
2. You don't know what Critical Race Theory is.
3. Teaching world history is great. That doesn't mean we have to NOT teach the full history of America.......IN AMERICA!
4. Who did what first in some part of the world isn't the important part. The important part is to tell the full story of American history.
5. Smarten up man.

It doesn’t. It’s just info. I’m not a fan of woke stuff but let’s not start hyper analyzing everything. Plus they can make whatever they want. Just don’t buy it
I am likely to buy it if it's a good game.

They can use a person of any nationally, but the need to single out a person's nationally is 10 steps backwards and we have come to far for this type of stuff to still be happening.

If you are to blind to see it.. I don't know what to tell you.

You understand naughty dog hasnt publicly said anything about their next IP...the race talk is from the media not Naughty Dog

I don't think black people have any issue seeing asians, indians, latinos etc in their games as a playable character, likely would support it aswell.
especially considering blacks have had little issue playing as whites for all their lives.

it's really only a certain demographic that has an odd complaint that one or 2 games a generation has a black lead or otherwise. not a good look for that particular demographic.

and the notion that studios aren't mixed with a variety of nationalities outside of white, is simply unlikely. these are large teams, that i'd assume have quite a few other nationalities in them that rarely get to even see their race represented.

which again, shouldn't be a big deal.
why would this need a ban, this is pure facts. Is there some hidden message im not seeing?

I think all games should have mainly black characters. Whenever we see a white character, we need to rage that they are being sjws 😂

In all seriousness. Goddamn naughty dog take your goddamn sweet time with making games… y dont you.

Druckmann made a brief appearance at CES 2022 with a pre-recorded video. In it, Druckmann reflects upon Sony's live-action Uncharted adaptation and offers praise to how well he believes it marries faithful narrative beats from Uncharted's fortune-hunter franchise with a fresh spin for brand-new audiences. Much of Druckmann's time at CES 2022 revolves around this praise, though the Co-President ends off on a note that teases "multiple game projects in the works" from Naughty Dog.
