Anything but God of War please. SSM needs to branch out.
This is why new IPs, although indeed great, are a risk since the investment needs to be returned, and making them at the expense of existing popular franchises isn't necessarily a good thing. It's also why people are expecting a new Uncharted, God of War, or The Last of Us. You know they're going to come at some point. These titles carry recognition. This doesn't mean they're the only titles, but they're necessary to help prop up other new IP and bring in the money.
Uh, SCE's best and most important studio is Polyphony Digital. Never doubt Kaz.
I mentioned in the past that there will be a few 'blasts from the past' and Shadow of the Beast is just one of them. To be more specific, a PS1 title will return in digital form with a new iteration. It's one of the so called '30' projects that are upcoming. Basically, in answer to your question, they are already kind of doing what you're saying with two titles. Beyond that, we'll see but I don't know of any others at this point in time.Great great post, I enjoy reading it and I agree with everything you said. Especially this bolded part.
Let me ask you this. It relates to some of your post above. I was playing Jak 1 HD collection (played it back in the day on PS2 as well. Finished HD version as well and got platinum) and I was thinking how much would it cost to create Jak 1 today? Maybe 3-5 million usd? Or less maybe with better engines devs have today.
So how awesome would it be if Sony decided to create another Jak 1 like Jak (lets call it Jak 1.2)? But limit the budget to 4-5 million (PSN game?) and if ND can't make it, then find someone else. Of course have ND folks have an eye on the project.
Similar art, no drastic change that ND planned for Jak 4. I am sure if "JAK 1.2" was released today on PSN for let's say 19.99usd/eur old fanbase would be all over it. We would be happy. Sony would make profit AND IP would stay relevant.
Sony has so many of this older IPs that would I am sure do well if reimagined as PSN titles with "smaller" budgets. MediEvil OR JetMoto will never be 60 million dollar IPs, but for 4-5 million on PSN gamers would love it. And how much would those IPs have to sell? 500k to be profitable? or even less.
So to sum it up. Why Sony doesn't do something like this?I just remembered they are doing this with Shadow of the Beast but question stands.
Santa Monica Open World/Sandbox Game?
Please please please

I literally Banderas'd after reading that.
God of War is a nice template, the set pieces, the gore and the huge battles is appealing. They just need to revamp many things, add RPG elements, make the story more personal and appealing, drastically improve movement and platforming. I personally want a GoW game with Egyption Mythology. Have a new protagonist with a more appealing story. Make the new character more flexible, perhaps add some more Prince of Persia style platforming, perhaps make the Bosses more like puzzles and climb on them like Shadow of Collosus. Have more open environments like a massive dessert where you can grab onto a huge flying bosses like Shadow of Collosus. I want a combination of Zelda, Shadow of Collosus and GoW. I don't just want a copy and paste of the old GoW formula just with a new character and mythology, I want the gameoplay to be groundbreaking and change the formula up a bit.

any chance of spiritual successor of tomba? why is there no platformer that copy tomba structure.
How is that different from Earth???"I want to make something that feels instantly familiar yet completely different; something that feels like home on an alien planet with a nitrogen atmosphere," Barlog said. "As lame and 'PR' as this sounds, the landscape of console gaming is at a pretty freaking awesome point right now. The next generation is going be a chance to really stretch our legs from a design and creative thinking perspective."

Nitrogen is mostly a filler in our atmosphere. Carbon based life needs oxygen. Nitrogen is a theoretical alternative to carbon http://www.daviddarling.info/encyclopedia/N/nitrogen-based_life.htmlHow is that different from Earth???

This, I like how guerrilla games is making a new ip and not stuck making killzones and I hope these guys do the same
Would nitrogen based life need nitrogen to breathe? Life on Earth is carbon based but we breathe oxygen. And just because life on Earth is carbon-based you wouldn't say Earth has carbon atmosphere.Nitrogen is mostly a filler in our atmosphere. Carbon based life needs oxygen. Perhaps, but I suspect he wanted a greater degree of exoticism but chose the wrong element.I think he means an alien planet like Earth.

We also need nitrogen. It's one of the elements which are necessary for life. But it is possible to replace water with ammonia (NH3) as a solvent. Such system would have a lot more nitrogen, probably also in the atmosphere.Would nitrogen based life need nitrogen to breathe? Life on Earth is carbon based but we breathe oxygen. And just because life on Earth is carbon-based you wouldn't say Earth has carbon atmosphere.
He's a game designer, not a scientist. He read some scientific articles and tried to imagine how it'd translate into game design. Games aren't usually very realistic in terms of science nor need they be.Perhaps, but I suspect he wanted a greater degree of exoticism but chose the wrong element.
SSM needs new IP.
GoW is too milked and this point.
GoW1
GoW2
GoW:Chains of Olympus
GoW3
GoW: Ghost off Sparta
GoW:Ascession
That is 6 games from 2005. Almost new game a year and last 4 were in last 4-3 years.
the thing is SSM IS working on A NEW IP, we know this(Stigs team is working on a new IP since GOW3). However the real question is, what will GOWA team do next? They should make a new IP as well. Let GOW rest for 4 years at least.
But since Barlog is working on a new IP as well, I doubt SSM is working on 3 new IPs at the same time, it would be too much imo.I wish it was true
Maybe the Ascension team can work on Savage Starlight with Hennig's team @ Naughty Dog?
