With the GTA 6 all but confirming that it is going to be a cross-gen game. It looks like we are heading into YEAR 3 with the most likely biggest selling game being available for PS4 and Xbone.

I can see cross-gen gaming still being a thing in year 5 at this rate.

EDIT:

Since some people are not too familiar with history, I am including some history from the PS2 release.

Plus everyone wants backward compatibility.

PS2 started slow. I was there, where you?

PS2 was released in 2000.

These 8 PS2 exclusive games were released in 2001. One year later.

When did GTA 6 get very much confirmed to be cross-gen?

Both the old and the current new leaks clearly show it being a cross gen game.

Remember, this is Rockstar. They made GTA 5, a PS3 game, look like a PS4 game.

So GTA6 on PS4 will look like a PS5 game.

This means that a GTA on current gen only such as a PS5, should look like a PS6 game.

And both leaks clearly just show an incremental upgrade from GTA5 and more in line with Read Dead 2.

Sony's obsession with prematurely launching the PS5... I mentioned previously that the idea is for it to be launched in 2021 or 2022.
What was MS's excuse then?

It's called $399/$499. This is what you get for that MSRP at the time. There was NOTHING massively more potent in that BOM in a '21/'22 APU either.

The I/O's in both were a major jumps for console gaming. Especially at the MSRP.

This is all just tech illiterate revisionism.

As for software:
If only there was a worldwide event that impacted everyone and delayed or scrambled pipelines for almost 2 years.... if only.

uh...

While I personally think it will be crossgen due to Take Two's greed, there was nothing in the leaks that indicated when the footage was taken in the dev cycle.

Let's at least wait for confirmation before pulling up to the doom cocaine trough.

I remember the PS1 demoing when I was in college. We could see the brilliance.

PS2 I saw it at a store and bought one immediately. Had a great time with that console, probably still the best time ever.

My apologies for calling you a novice earlier. I didn't know that you were such a veteran gamer.

I made edits to my posts.

Thank you for your service to the industry.

After watching star citizen vids I can almost agree. But I’m realising these console are not that powerful anyway. Even if they were not being ‘held back’ by last hen hardware what kind of jump are people expecting. We was only ever gonna get better resolutions and frame rates at best. A jump in geometric complexity. But none of the stuff that matters. Physics in games have takes a back seat for years. Level design has stagnated for the most part. GTA has not really shaken up its core mechanics since it’s inception. It’s just gotten prettier. I doubt they need to leave last gen behind for anything they are doing. At best GTA 6 will look as gold as the mods PC users being for the last few years. I’m sure it will look pretty, but people are kidding themselves if they tho it’s gonna reinvent the wheel. It will be more of the same with a bunch of new social commentary to parody. I’m sure it will be fun. But hardly gonna push anything outside of visuals. It could probably run on last gem consoles looking just like GT5 and people wouldn’t care.

Makes sense that they they would include lastgem console if only for the multiplayer money they will make. And XB1/ PS4 have done plenty of open work MP shooters already.

We seem to be on a "every other gen" trend in the 21st century, I never thought the PS3 and 360 were all that impressive an upgrade, some of the specific games were, but then some not so much, compare say RE5 to REmake and I always thought PS3 games were usually kinda muddy and blurry looking, not as impressive as what I expected, PS2/Xbox/GameCube held up very well when compared to the PS3/360 with rarely, like God of War 3, the difference being as "wow" as you'd hope.

Meanwhile the PS4 was a big upgrade, The Order 1886, which came out less than two years into the PS4's life cycle, still looks amazing to this day, a far bigger leap than from PS2 to PS3 imo, Arkham Knight still looks amazing to this day, both games are now close to a decade old, reminds me of how Max Payne 2 was still a jaw dropping looking game on PC in 2010.

Meanwhile Capcom's RE engine was a legit big upgrade over what they could do on PS2, RE7 was one of the first big "wow" moments of the 8th gen for me.

But now we're back to an incremental difference that's really not all that big, so we probably won't see a big leap again until the next gen.

And all these great games were released over the course of the PS5 generation within a similar timeframe, and through a global pandemic:

Plus Death Stranding, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Ghost of Tsushima, Spider-Man and Uncharted remasters.

IMO, it doesn't necessarily needs to be better graphics (as if this was the only thing that matters when talking about generational leap for most people), yes the GPU was much better this gen, but the main upgrade was the CPU (especially compare to the Jaguars), meaning we should of seen more complex gameplay element (such as more NPC characters, more physics effects, more complex game logic and AI), however this would require the devs to design the game with current gen CPU in mind, if they decide to backport the game to last gen, it wouldn't be possible (as CPU based calculation is less scalable when compared to GPU based). In this regard, I would suppose the overwhelming majority of cross-gen games were the culprits.

I can’t really blame them. There’s still no reason to run to the store to buy a PS5.

Nor Xbox. I agree.

Although the recent price decrease helps.

I honestly think both want to release a new gen console already, but people would bitch about it and developers can't stop with the PS4/XBox one shit.

Hardware-wise, maybe.

But find me a AAA PC, PS5 or XSX game that is on the same level gameplay-wise to TOTK, physics and all that.

Photorealism was once used to dictate which gen we were on, but from now on it's gameplay, AI and physics.
i know it's cool that totk did things you haven't seen in games before. but like this isn't a great way to judge generations. there's not a single game on the switch with as an expansive an open world as gta 5 - especially when it comes to multiplayer. and that was a ps3 game.

I get that Nintendo peeps love Nintendo. However, TOTK would be a budget release on PS5 if it was not a Zelda game.

It's just a fact.

To be honest; I would be happy if GTA 6 is cross-gen because that gives it a chance to run on my steam deck. I love the idea of big scalable open world games that I can play with all the graphical bells and whistles on my 4090 gaming pc and then do all the side mission stuff on a portable like I have been doing with Cyberpunk. I really hope GTA 6 is out on Steam for launch.

playstation 5 was released world-wide on november 19, 2020. so, we are actually heading into year 4. which, of course, is even worse...

i wouldn't go that far. but yeah... standards are just different for nintendo. respectfully :)
edit: although actually, thinking about it more. playstation tried to sell the last little big planet game and returnal for full price. so i think maybe this is not right.

It's the point that counts. It would not be considered a major release. Period.

Its about portability, PS5 and Series X would be dead on arrival if they had similar spec of Switch. If not for portability, Switch wouldn't fare much better compare to Wii U, its not about their IPs, as Wii U also had some of the best games (Mario Kart 8 being one).
