David Jaffe sets Twitter on fire after calling Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom “bland and old looking”

The game is fun but the visuals do leave a lot to be desired even by switch standards. And the performance.....if often seems to dip into the ~15-20 FPS range especially when you're making use of the powers. I could understand ignoring the visuals but the performance absolutely should be criticized.

Seems like fair criticism to me. He's praising certain aspects and criticizing others, it's not like he's shitting all over the game.

Nintendo has been at least a generation and a half behind in terms of hardware for multiple generations now and it clearly shows.

Pretty much the reason why the $70 price tag is too much for me, never mind the other $60 Switch games that never go down in price, like ever. I'm not spending that much money on games that look like they belong in the 360/PS3 generation. At least through emulation you can enjoy these games at high resolutions and framerates.

I saw a trailer for TotK in my local IMAX theater the other day, and even the trailer itself was a stuttering mess.

I does work though. It worked with BoTW, everybody praised the artstyle at the time.

Wind Waker is small in comparison, not only in size but in the variety of atmosphere it can offer. You could not capture the subtelty of all the systemic and real time effects of BoTW/TotK with something as extreme as the cel shading of Wind Waker. It does look better for the eye but it's very one dimensional and rough.

Nonsense.

You need to play other cell-shaded games. There is nothing at all in BOTW or TOTK that wouldn't or couldn't look 100m times better fully cell shaded.

For what it runs on it`s actually pretty great.
Ofc compared to what stationary actually decent hardware can and has put out.......

Did it though...
Palette choices are way better in WW tho. You could bump the colours in emulator in 1 click for BOTW and it will look MUCH more livelier.

TOTK could've solve this problem with simple filters via settings (a lot of games are actually adapting this approach), but I guess nobody cared.

The game industry is starved of insiders brave enough to publicly have opinions with any criticism of the industry, rather than criticism of "gamers", although Jaffe doesn't have to worry about PR any more.

Man I'm having so much trouble deciding what "side of history" @davidjaffe is on?! Is he "part of the problem" or "part of the solution"? Can you be both?

Can you link the jokes? Was he just repeating a Patrice O'Neal joke or was this original material? Was it a flattering joke about giant penises? I can't condemn a man based on your word alone, sir.

The joke was that a bad pc port / glitch was the only way to get black people in the game. I stopped supporting him after that as he's clearly willing to flirt with any audience that will give him attention.

The clip is on twitter somewhere.

It's not like Nintendo is releasing it on a PS5 or Series X

Considering the Switch is a tablet from 2017, it looks fucking amazing. Plus there are all the dynamic systems on top of that.

We really should stop giving Jaffe a platform.

We keep mentioning "the director of God of War" as if it wasnt a game released in 2005

Much has changed in the industry since then, and his opinion now is as valuable as any other.

Specially now that he is saying time and time again controversial stuff for clout

Windwaker on GameCube and the hd version on the wii u looked better.
It doesn't. Stop the hyperbole. TOTK has 10x the amount of stuff going on screen.
Being port of a Wii U game? Doubt. Nintendo just didn't care to change/improve the visuals.
It runs like absolute dogshit on the Wii U and not particularly well on Switch. BOTW is still one of the best-looking Switch games out there along with Xenoblade Chronicles 3. That piece of crap tablet has nothing more to offer. You can count better looking games on one hand or not at all even.

Windwaker on the WiiU with its fully cell-shaded graphics looks way better.
And it’s also like 1/8 of the size and 1/5000 the systems/physics complexity.

I don’t really get it. Would you rather they cut the physics stuff and make the world smaller just to get WW HD visuals?

Mind you people would still be complaining about the visuals anyway, even if it looked way better than that. The best looking game on Switch will always be a bad looking game compared to what’s on the competitions platform.

a game from 2005 that at the time wasn't even close in quality to the best of its genre either btw.

let's not forget that DMC3 and Ninja Gaiden Black were already out.

Maybe it's telling something about the gameplay and/or overall game quality if people don't give a shit about graphics.

You have to adjust your mindset that you're playing a PS3 game based on its image quality and render distance. Personally, I'm playing games to this day that look way older and worse. I don't care that much in those instances because other aspects of the games are ace. And I'm saying that as someone who usually uses RT and values good IQ and AA in video games and I do think TotK would be still a better game if shadows wouldn't flicker like they wanted me to have a seizure.

However, I do think it's worth pointing out in a review. But it's also telling, one way or another, if they don't. It's not always "because Nintendo/Zelda" though.

I guess the screenshot is not how it looks on average, but afair BoTW did not look like a stunner to me either. Reminded me very much of Morrowind, a sort of ancient game.
Newer handheld games shoud be at least be able to look like Killzone Mercenary, a ten year old game which still looks quite good on a handheld screen, with of course a very different engine goal.
I might also just not dig the art style. For some reason Proteus is a game I did not even like, but immediately thought an action adventure like Zelda with this style could work pretty well. Maybe go towards whatever 11-11 memories retold did, even did too much, and the picturesque look could be great, even on Switch.

He's not wrong.

I just entered the first chasm and the game is straight up ugly there, even by Switch standards.

Still a great game so far.

Why are you looking up in the sky? Go to any town and the level of detail is worse than windwaker. The shimmering is literally the worst ive ever seen with lines going across like the textures are in constant motion. It is arguably the worst looking game ive ever seen.

I dont really care if the game cant handle it an acceptable level of fidelity. i appreciate the physics implementation and I hope more games do it, but we arent talking about gameplay here. The game simply looks unacceptable 99% of the time. Screenshots dont show the constant shimmering.

Huge part of the reason why I went with emulation despite owning a Switch and pre-ordering a physical copy. All my screens are 4K(ish) and low res/no af/no aa with shimmering is just... ooof. I would argue that TOTK IQ is bad even for 1080p screens, really.

Chasms are straight-up ugly tho even with fidelity injections on PC, oh well. But the game is still crazy fun.

I have a 3080 with a 11700k and I thought about it, but my friend with the 2080 said the fps is just 10 so I said fuck it and bought the game.

Are you saying there is shimmering even at 4k? How does it run on your PC? What are your specs?

Is this the same guy that got lost 5 minutes into Metroid Dread?

I could easily say that the opposite is true for certain games - technical achievements like Horizon and Ragnarok get inflated scores because reviewers ignore the boring ass gameplay since the graphics are so good.

There is a very slight shimmering, but overall abuser of IQ is laughably lowres textures in some areas.

R7 5800x/RTX 3080/32gb ram. Runs totally fine with 4K/30 (60 is broken) with better shadows/no FSR/higher internal res on Ryujinx with Vulkan.

Yuzu with Vulkan in 1080p is working wonderfully on my laptop in 1x (1080p). 4800H/RTX 2060/16gb of ram.

in Germany we call these "Grafikblender" (graphics blinders), they try to blind the player with their graphics to distract from the mundane gamedesign

I like the visuals just fine. But I also play 20+ year old games on the regular, it's just not top concern for me. Switch is my favorite console in -years- and I don't mind it being "underpowered" one bit.

Jaffe is totally inconsistent on this point

He gets upset when everyone gets hyped for AAA

Gets angry when people don’t care about visuals for a pretty expansive and experimental game

TotK is surprising me technically. Getting this to run on switch hardware is no joke, and I’m impressed with how scalable the engine is

EverydayBeast

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
Zelda games have entertained good realistic graphics before (twilight princess) it’s not Zelda it’s the hardware a piece of info everyone knows.

He's not wrong. But I'll take interesting world interactivity and simulation > great looking but ultimately 'window dressing' visuals, any day of the week.

I honestly wouldn't know. I haven't played it yet.

From how you sound it doesn't seem good though.

No fucking class. Even if I agree with him, it’s bad form for people in the industry, or at least formerly worked in it, to shit on other’s work like that.

But it sure is based.

It's on crap hardware what does he expect? If it were on the ps5 and looked like it does he'd have a point. That's like complaining that an accord isn't as fast as a Cadillac CT4 Blackwing. I mean they're both cars right?

You'd think the creator of drawn to death would understand art styles. Jaffe just tries to make headlines to grow his bashing greatness youtube channel.
If he didn't bash a great game I'd be surprised. Just cause he forgot how to, doesn't mean he should bash others work.

He's no longer in the industry. He's retired from making games. He likes being a youtube personality.

This isnt Neil Druckmann shitting on Zelda's graphics. He's merely asking reviewers whose job it is to critique games to actually critique the graphics which are atrocious. You honestly have to play this game on a big screen to see just how bad this looks.

Ah! CLEARLY a critial comment about the underrepresented in gaming. Sounds like you didn't get it or don't support "people of color"! You wouldn't last a day on Era, buddy.

This is a conversation that happens all the time...Nintendo's big prestige titles are graded on a curve (has to be the "best") but that doesn't mean the games aren't good. He's allowed to have his opinion.
