How the FUCK do devlopers keep getting away with visual downgrades? latest example, Forspoken

Give monolith soft the same hardware as PS5 and they would absolutely stomp the shit out of this luminous engine team.

2023 on PS5

2015 on Cemu

Yikes. Did they use the Slipspace Engine?

My guess is as long as devs keep announcing games long before they’re even close to being finished.

At least this game can get the "biggest disappoint of 2023" out of the way so we can get to the actual good games.

When games come out looking spectacular and they are difficult to run on low end-average hardware (which is what consoles are) then you hear cries of "unoptimised" from the rooftops.

Please understand, this is generation entitled.
The last time we had a visually spectacular game was RDR2. And that ran on 1.5TF consoles just fine. Demon's Souls also looks spectacular and runs great on PS5. As does Horizon. There is nothing entitled to mock games with extremely outdated visuals requiring top of the line hardware. We've seen countless devs already waste great performance on development shortcuts/incompetence. SeriesX/PS5 are absolutely not low-end hardware by any stretch either. With your mentality, games like Gotham Knights are a user issue, not dev one.

Game development. They want the game to look as amazing as they can, and sometimes the vision and performance of early builds can’t be maintained or optimized by the time the game ships, so adjustments have to be made.

This isn’t maliciously done at all, the reality is the game did look that good early in development, they had to make cuts to get it functional and running well by launch. Is what it is.

Frankly if anything they probably shouldn’t have shown it off that early, but we could say that about a lot of games these days.

why isn't this illegal?!!!!!!
how many times we gonna get fucked over like this before the sheep actually wake up?

OP I assume you're younger.

Today a lot of games look great, but us older gamers are forged in pessimism. Bullshots were a fucking epidemic 20 years ago, nothing like it is today. But we're still sour, so we're less likely to be disappointed like you.

Just like with the ESRB. It’s gotta be taken to court and it’s gotta hit their pocket books before they make any adjustments.

What I don’t like is, some trailers for Hogwarts and even Doom don’t tell you the Switch version will be downgraded. They just release one trailer. People like you and I know what you’re getting, but does the general public realize that it won’t look that good?

I think the industry runs off ignorance with this stuff or they want pity for being a game console developer. I’m not buying this game, but I do see everyone’s point. It’s kinda of a let down because that reveal trailer looked amazing. I’ll just look back on every single time this happened since the PS3/360 gen.

Bullshots were an epidemic since even before 20 years ago. And it was worse then as the bullshots were on the back of the box you were buying.

How they managed to get away with that, i still wonder.

Yes they've always been an issue, but I think they hit peak BS during the transition to the 3D era and a generation or three after. That was ROUGH.

luminous engine is ass.

Shame. Because there is a lot of potential there. They have spent so much money on this fucking engine... you think they should sunset it?
I mean, there comes a time and circumstance when these things should be, but, I dunno... I have seen a lot of impressive shit with this engine, yet... there are still many problems with games that use it as their backbone.

i think SE is going to sunset it, if forspoken performs badly in sales (which is very likely imo).

Probably... Been playing through FFXV Royal Edition and have been thoroughly impressed with the 4k presentation. Keeping at 60 FPS in all areas. It is an amazing looking game in a lot of places. But, that is with DLSS and not even 2.0, at that. Still.... I have a soft spot for this game.

I just checked to see what gaming engine it uses and apparently it's the same engine that Final fantasy 15 used.

So, at the end, the game is just an upscaled PS4 game.

Funnily enough, the gameplay footage from the reveal of FF15 back in 2013 actually looks better than Forspoken; in fact, that footage still looks better than most games today. It obviously didn’t run on real PS4 hardware, but you‘d think ten years later that level of fidelity should be easily achievable.

And does anyone remember the Agni’s Philosophy demo that Square showed back in 2012? That too looks better than almost anything out today:

That demo is from 11 years ago, before the PS4 was even announced, and looks better than anything Square has released since then. Back then people actually thought this would be the level of visual fidelity we could expect from PS4/XBoxOne lol.

I really wonder what hardware this was running on, or if they just completely lied about the "real time" part.

because looking at this, that PC they are using must have had at least a GTX 690, maybe even 2 running in SLI to get graphics like this working in real time back then...

Yup. Bullshots have been around since the first game system in the 70s. Back then magazine ads or back of the box art weren't even digital bullshots from an alpha build. They were fake renditions an artist drew at head office. At least back then electronics and gaming were in it's infancy, so expecting up to date professional processes was probably not realistic at the time with cardboard boxes and gaming offices with 12 people working there.

I have no idea why gaming gets such a free pass. Whether it's fake pics, alpha builds or "subject to change", they are given free reign to what they want where the final game can be totally different where no business or government authority cares.

If Kitchenaid promoted a new blender coming out later in the year and showed it in ads and the boxart had the same thing, I dont think Kitchenaid can put a disclaimer at the bottom in tiny font saying it's subjective what's inside the box (assuming they even do that at all).

So the box and ads shows a nice red blender with 5 buttons and 3 different modes. You open the box and get a green blender, 4 buttons and 2 modes. People would hold Kitchenaid accountable. And every store and Kitchenaid themselves would honour anyone refunding it.

In gaming, the studio would just claim "sorry bud, things change", and getting a refund depends if you can convince the brick & mortar store or e-store clerks to give you a refund. There's a chance they might say too bad you opened it. As a consumer, it's a catch 22 because you'd never know how good or bad it is without opening it and testing it yourself.

Damn I remember this. This one too:

To be fair though, the facial animation in Mortal Kombat 11 was impressive. A lot of particle effects in both too which has stood out to me in the Forspoken trailers. Curious to see how much they’ve toned it down in the final version

We should be even more disappointed that the industry I'd still doing this 20 years later.

Forspoken definitely has one of the biggest downgrades of all time. And for no apparent reason, because Horizon (cross gen game) looks better than Forspoken's PRE-RELEASE footage. And Forspoken is 100% next-gen only

WTF SlimySnake SlimySnake
I hope Square gets absolutely raked over the coals for this downgrade. I had hoped the days of Watch Dogs level downgrades were over. They won't though because gamers standards have dropped in terms of what they'll accept graphically and also because games journalism is worthless and never calls out publishers for anything.

Damn they went and turned it into a switch exclusive
You know, the shot of the trees reminded of those Zelda BOTW shots posted after the downgrade. I dont know if its the lack of selfshadowing on trees or poor Ambient Occlusion, but those distant trees stand out like a sore thumb like they did in zelda. At least zelda had great art style so stuff right in front of you looked good. I dont know what they have done to the IQ in Forspoken but it looks awful in every shot.

On the plus side, digital refunds seem to be doable in modern day. So gamers feeling burned should take advantage asap pending the e-store's return policy. As for disc gamers, good luck getting a refund at Gamestop or Walmart.

Unless gamers as a whole nail companies to the cross, things will never change. You'd think with day one reviews and tons of streamers talking about new games, people would just wait till they get home from work or school, check out all the info and then decide to buy it the next day.

Instead, you got people still doing preorders a year out. Even weirder since digital copies dont run out and gamers are around 75% digital now. So it's not like the disc era where maybe a hot selling game is sold out at Best Buy down the street when someone checks on the way home.

The industry has a such a strong marketing arm to it amping up gamer hype, they can afford to do this. If the game bombs, it makes no difference because all the game studio has to do is release another bullshot trailer for their other new game and the cycle repeats.

Sure, the picture ooks like ass but I shouldn't you guys at least wait until the game is released before you're popping veins left and right? I mean, when there's a proper comparison between platforms etc.

It's one picture. Not that I'm doubting it could very well look this bad, but anyway?

Edit: Never mind, didn't realize there's a demo!

there's a playable demo that just got a new update even... it's very easy to get a first impression of the game with that thing out

It’s all kinds of daft to hold on to an announcement trailer as the definitive way the final product was going to look. They released a demo showing you how the final game would look.

You’d really only have a logical claim of ‘downgrade’ and false advertisement if the final game looked worse than the demo.

Heck, the announcement trailer has text right there at the bottom saying it was work in progress and things could change.

The game was vastly downgraded and it looks bad but not sonic/pokemon bad:

I think it looks like a mid\low ps4 AAA game in slightly higher res than 1080p, still disgraceful for a nextgen only game.
Not gonna lie sometimes ff15 kinda looked better...

Do you always have to have things spelled out to you?

I meant that it won't get a good response from regular people who are just looking for a good time playing a decent video game, and won't hurl praise at it just because it features a black female lead or whatever. Because it's pretty much guaranteed that those loons at Kotaku and other websites like that are going to prop it up just by that virtue alone, regardless of whether the game is good or not.
It's never enough for the woke cult

I sincerely doubt the pc version is gonna look even close to the reveal tbh, and i have a monster pc, not a fox and the grape situation.
Yep. Just like with witcher 3 and watch dogs and every cross gen game ever released, no dev is going to maintain two different versions of the game. They will downgrade both with minor changes that can be scaled back and forth like foliage and draw distance. Actual lighting and visual fidelity will be downgraded for PC.

The only hope i have for the PC version is due to them not sending out PC review copies so they must be either trying to hide an even worse performing PC Version or hiding it so that it doesn’t make the ps5 version look bad.

Lmao. I cant believe this is even an argument. Tell me the PS5 is your first console without telling me PS5 is your first console.

Are you trying to argue developers haven't been prioritizing 30fps over 60fps in order to have better visuals in their games over higher framerate?
How do you explain hfw looking 2 gens ahead of this and still having higher framerate and resolution?? (Like way higher)

There is too much difference for being only a matter of 30vs60.

What you say is true but it clearly doesn't fully apply here, the problem is at the core.

Final release has removed at least 75% of the geometry seen in the initial bullshot trailers. The distance trees are just flat plane billboards, there's nothing to even shadow.
