Cos its a huge drop of compared to the original

TLOU I aprox +20 mill copies

TLOU II aprox +10 mill copies

An estimate 50% drop judging by those numbers so they rather not talk about it, not something to be proud of/brag about.

Anyway congrats to GoT
This makes no sense.

It took 6+ years for TLOU to hit 20 million copies sold, so how is it a huge drop?

PlayStation 5 - Over 20 million units sold
PlayStation 4 - Over 119 million units sold

Sony must be disappointed with the huge drop.
Like i said if you want to go with the 'what if' scenario in the future for part II numbers just go ahead im not that interested

tlou part 2 actually released on ps4 in Feb 2020 when theres already plenty ps4 around in large quantity and now also available on ps5 so theres that

It was released in June 2020. TLOU was bundled for years with PS4 consoles. There's a reason why it only took TLOU 2 16 days to surpass TLOU Remaster in revenue in the US.

You're the one trying to compare the current sales figures of 2 games that released 7 years apart. If you wanted to make an argument that made sense you could have at least compared the sales figures of the games for the first 2 years after they released.

yea so.....I don't know if you know this or not, but.....The Last Of Us 1 didn't move 20 million units in 2 years bud.

I know the conversation will goes down to this so my advice for you then is to wait for tlou 2 numbers after 6 year release just like tlou 1 does ( since everyone here seems bitter and keep bring that up as an excuse for tlou 1 doing better)

One game having bigger numbers after 7 years compared to one after 2 years isn't an excuse lol. We're just pointing out the argument you're making of comparing the total sales numbers of both games is a dumb one and makes no sense.

Thats not an excuse, that is how time works sir.

The amount of desperation regarding this game is insane. This might be one of the oddest comparisons I've seen in a long time, thats like telling us Activision must not be proud of those COD sales being 10 million at launch, I mean the last one move 30 million (proceeds to fucking ignore HOW LONG IT WAS ON SALE FOR)

Thats a fuck ton of logic to ignore my guy. Using this odd shit, it would be like saying 100% factually GTAVI will fail, it will NOT move 150 million units at launch, so I mean failz yoloz. SO bud, you know what the fuck you tried to get away with regarding that Fisher Price Math logic you had going on there lol The fact that The Last Of Us 2 has moved half those units in a fraction of that time is insane and all this before a port on PS5, before a remaster on PC etc

GTAVI to move at the same speed as The Last Of Us 2 vs 1, it would be like moving 82 million units in 2 years and you telling us "not something to be proud of" Air...use yo hands when you do the math and don't be scared if people look at you lol

No one needs to wait. I told you that it only took 16 days for TLOU 2 to surpass TLOU Remaster in revenue in the US.

It even surpassed Uncharted 4 in the US in just 16 days.

Sony doesn't generate revenue if the game is being bundled with consoles and it's selling at MSRP. This is not the same as the Horizon PS5 bundle because that's selling above the standard MSRP.

The point is, the total amount of units sold can be very misleading.

No one is disputing those numbers, we are questioning why you are saying "not something to be proud of/brag about.".

So I don't know how selling 10 million in 2 years is bad for The Last Of Us 2, when that is faster then the sales of The Last Of Us 1. I don't think Sony was expecting 20 million in 1 year or some weird shit like that, I don't see any history of ANY Sony game moving 20 million in 1 or 2 years.

Spiderman, God Of War etc all took YEARS to move those units.

So tried your best to force some narrative that its "not something to be proud of/brag about." yet don't have any examples to argue its a normal thing. Even Ghost Of Tsushima, being alt almost 10 million is huge for them, but shit using your logic "not something to be proud of/brag about" I mean, its not 20 million in 1 month right bro?

shame really /s

"Yeah cos comparing a new game with a remaster is a fair comparison ffs"

yea cos comparing 2 years and 7 years was fair? Wow bud. The hurt is real on you on this one. ffs

ok then we shall revisit tlou 2 numbers again in 2026 ( just like 6 year as tlou)

I mean sure, but thats the fair thing to do. No different then Ghost Of Tsushima 2 or something. We wouldn't just start off the bat comparing sales of something just released or a year or 2 on the market. That makes literally no sense and for something to have half the sales in less then half the time and to pretend its some horrible thing makes no fucking sense.

Why wouldn't I? The majority of TLOU 1 sold the majority of its copies on the PS4.

You were just better off saying, "I stand corrected" instead of just trying to defend your point.
Tlou 1 release on PS3 ( install base aprox 80 mill) ported to ps4

Tlou 2 release on ps4 ( instal base aprox 110 mill) ported to ps5

You guys majority of videogame sales are during it first year the wait for 6 years to get a fair comparison are really dragging it

Tlou 2 should be doing better based on bigger install base and better name recognition from its first game but it didnt

The Last Of Us series simply isn't "majority of videogame" though. It would be like saying you know that GTA VI is a flop based on the first year sales, cos you know, "majority of videogame sales are during it first year" lol

The Last Of Us 1 sold most of its units on PS4 in terms of the remaster, being on PS3 the year prior was irrelevant cause you are ignoring the 80 million base was moving on to PS4. You need to factor an active base, not simply all 80 million

The Last Of Us 2 could not be in a situation where you are saying "should be doing better", cause the first fucking game didn't move MOST OF ITS UNITS in 1 fucking year, where did you get this weird information?

The generalization on game sales doesn't fit something like The Last Of Us 2, just like it couldn't fit 1. You can't ask for a fucking metric to bash 2, that you don't want hold to 1. Using your logic The Last Of Us 1 is a flop.

So you just sound fucking triggered that nothing you are saying fits and this game moved 10 million units in a fraction of the time that the first game did.

Be like saying GTA V moved majority of its units in its first year.....

This reminds me again that some people have such an infantile perspective on how this industry works.

"They rather not talk about those numbers cause it's not something to be proud of" Yeah that's why they specifically mentioned the sales of TLOU 2 just a few weeks ago, right? They don't compare TLOU 1 to TLOU 2 because one of those had a rerelease and has been out for much longer. This should be obvious to anyone.

GOT isn't the biggest offender of these sins, that probably belongs to Skyrim. Hell, it's not even Sony's biggest offender of those sins. I made it through the first Island and did all the content on it so it held my attention longer than most open world games that are cut from the same cloth.

Recently playing Skyrim EE.

It's map isn't littered with icons, there are no activities to complete either.

You need to walk to every landmark before it shows on your map.

And every noteworthy location is visible from afar, making you curious what's in there.

Also it's much more involved role playing game. Makes you choose at every step whether you wanna help, hinder, steal or kill whoever you are dealing with.

I guess it's been long time since you played it.

You're making no sense.

It was announced that The Last of Us sold 20 million units in 2022

PS4 install base 110 million
PS3 install base 85 million

The Last of Us sold 7 million copies on the PS3.
The Last of Us Remaster sold around 13 million copies on the PS4

This means The Last of Us sold 20 million copies with a much bigger install base than The Last of Us Part II. You can't ignore the fact that The Last of Us had more than 15 different bundles.

You just killed your own argument in your post. lol

Yup.

Its about active install base. Its why we would start seeing some PS5 games outsell PS4 games even with PS4 having a larger install base, doesn't mean it has a larger active base of users, many gamers might hold off from buying a game simply to play it on a new system in a better resolution.

For all we know many people wanted The Last Of Us 1, saw it was coming to PS4 and just waited. I'm sure many did the same with Ghost and The Last Of Us 2. I'm literarily doing that with several games that I can play on PS4, that I'll just wait till I have a PS5 to buy or something. Regardless, nothing they are saying makes any sense.

Generally most games indeed sell most of their units during that first year, The Last Of Us, GTA, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, God Of War and many are ARE NOT general releases and should never fucking be used as any example to tell us what the fuck is normal or not with sales. Be like saying most of GTA V's sales happened on PS3 and 360 during its first year lol I mean come on bro, PS3 had 80 millz /s

Air be like "GTA VI should be moving around 80 to 90 million during its launch, that is normal as game sales sell most during dem first yearz"

There is a compass on your HUD leading you by the nose. TES was dumbed down when they started developing it for consoles. Morrowind didn't give you an in-game map and made you navigate by using quest text and in game landmarks. It also had a fast travel system that was lore appropriate (only between major cities using the Silt Striders). If you think Skyrim is an involved role playing game I don't think you have much experience with the genre.

Bethesda doesn't want you to get lost in their games anymore and that's a shame. One of my favorite memories in Morrowind was a quest that gave you incorrect directions. My guess is that was unintentional but it lead me down a path to another random adventure. It's the journey, not the destination and that tenant has seemingly gone by the wayside in most open world games.

Great game overall...and deserved...I got pretty bored towards the end and have no interest in the DLC but for that kind of open world game I would much prefer to play it over a ubisoft Valhalla etc.

Looking forward to what Sucker Punch do next.

Much deserved, loved it enough to get the plat trophy. PlayStation creates killer, new IP every single gen and they reap the rewards, can't wait to see what the PlayStation Studios family has cooking for us next.

Compass marker is all you get in Skyrim. You have to work and talk to PPL to even get the quests, that you can track later with a compass.

Calling it more guided than latest Ubi style games that adds 100s of icons on map with you just climbing a tower is hilarious.

Not comparing it with Morrowind, that type of game is a bit extreme in terms of player freedom.

I love going back to the game for its atmosphere. Its the most calming game I have ever played. I love just riding from one end of the map to the other. I only whish you could turn of enemy encounters all together.

Does anyone know what happens when you clear the game 100%? Are still mongols running around at every corner?

lol its a design thing and I get why they'd do that with those other titles. To be fair, you can get lost in those games and clearly choose to ignore those maps as an option exist to simply ignore it, they simply want the player to have the focus on getting to the right place to experience those quest. They likely want someone spending their time on a quest and having fun vs "where do I go now".

Being lost can be fun, don't get me wrong I love their games, but it can also be a boring experience to someone and lead to frustration.

So fun for us, but that is a type of fun we easily can apply, but to others that might be a boring experience to them.

So I do like that wind thing in Ghost guides you in a way that doesn't always have you looking at a map, but its design is the same reason why Elder Scrolls is the way it is. They want you headed towards the fun.

I didn't call it a Ubisoft style game. I said it's guilty of the sin of not wanting you to get lost or miss content. You can call Morrowind extreme. I'd say it's pretty clunky by even Bethesda standards which is saying something but TES has been simplified and streamlined for the masses. And if you like that, there is nothing wrong with it.

Ghost of Tsushima is the more successful game of the two:
-GoT had a far higher average selling price compared to TLOU II.
-GoT had an immensely lower head count (and hence, development budget) compared to TLOU II.
-GoT is a new IP, whereas TLOU II was a sequel to a +20 million seller.
-TLOU II is probably at about 10.5m as of now and it's likely reaching the product's EOL sooner rather than later (thanks to the already aggressive price reductions taking place), however, once GoT receives the same aggressive price promotions that TLOU II received, it will more than likely outsell TLOU II even on that (mostly useless) metric.

With it being on PS+ Extra I doubt it'll sell more than another 1M max in the next year(s). Most of Sony's 1st party games will get a hit in sales going forward with the introduction of "wait until it's on PS+" mentality.

I get why they'd do it too. They want to appeal to a larger audience. I also can appreciate people not wanting to get lost or to have access to fast travel systems that let you go anywhere at anytime but in the back of my mind I'm always going to ask why you are playing an open world in the first place.

Also, due to lack of quest text, I think it would be really difficult to be successful in Skyrim without the markers. I've heard similar comments about the Witcher 3 and while you can turn off quest markers in that game, quest descriptions are designed to let you be successful in that matter.

Games set in that time period with maps and everyone being an expert cartographer drive me nuts.

I think they should add quest text to expand on lore and give even better context.

That way you could skip on quest markers if needed.

Maybe a Twitter movement could help Bethesda see the light?

That would be preferable but Skyrim was really barebones in that regard. It's a design choice and the games are so big they need to make decision. Games are expensive to make so they are going to cast as wide of net as possible even if it leaves old curmudgeons like me behind.

but in the back of my mind I'm always going to ask why you are playing an open world in the first place.

Cause the want the feeling of playing in that world, not the real frustrations of getting lost and wasting time.

Its like watching a show and an episode airs where the character is lost, its not saying you WANT to get lost, its saying you are watching cause them being lost is part of the story, will lead to something etc.

In a video game, this is completely different. Of course getting lost can lead to some amazing find, but it can also lead to absolutely not a damn thing being found and a waste of time...ie BOTW lol So gamers want the freedom of exploring that world, but with purpose and would rather hear those quest and KNOW something is worth it for the time spent, then walk miles to some forest only to find not a damn thing is going on there lol

So the markers in Skyrim are to help guide you to where those moments start, not always how or where they are going to end. When worlds start to get that massive, they can't just hope someone finds that area and gets the best quest.

Its better to allow that freedom to the player.

Turn off those markers and fuck around and find out

Turn on the markers and let it guide you to the funz. I feel it all leads to the same thing anyway, but I do get what you mean with someone naturally finding those areas or coming across something on their own with no help, but allow the player to choose that.

But it's clearly not because of the consoles specifically because both Morrowind and Oblivion were designed with consoles in mind. The increasing focus on more accessible games has been happening for years and it's happened regardless of platforms. Just take a look at classic WoW vs WoW now. WoW in 2004 only had quest markers and you had to figure out everything else by the quest text.

Now look at WoW now: Your map shows you every quest location and also shows you exactly where you need to go. A game that has never even touched a console.

It's a fine line between exploring and being aimless. I rarely explored in Morrowind just to explore. I was always intending to do something to progress a questline but I sure did get distracted and lost a lot. vaibhavpisal vaibhavpisal 's suggestion would be the best of both worlds.

It's funny you mention BOTW as it has towers and quest markers. One of the best side quests in the game just referenced a river, a cardinal and a cave. I loved that game but mostly for the traversal and sandbox elements. A lot of the rewards you found along the way were pretty meaningless but I'd still rank it with the likes of Morrowind, GTAIII/SA, SOTC and Just Cause 2 as my favorite open world games.
