"Ghost of Tsushima" (Ghost of Tsushima) and "Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut" released by Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) It has been revealed that the total actual sales of Ghost of Tsushima in Japan has exceeded 1 million units. This was revealed in an interview with Jim Ryan, president and CEO of SIE, conducted by Famitsu.

Need a comparison versus the other Sony games

Obviously with the setting this game is more marketable in Asia so wouldn't be unexpected for it to do well

This just shows how irrelevant Famitsu numbers are. Did the game ever surpass 500k in there?
Lol you wish.

Already spouting nonsense even before confirming you don't even know that's the case or not. Just goes to show how much you know about Japan.

Here, this the most recent numbers from Famitsu that I have found about Tsushima's physical sales:

It did 385k before dissapearing the charts, over 3 years ago. And it did about 220k in the launch week. So its been 150 weeks ago. If you assume it did ~1k in average physically ever since then, you would have around 550k sales done physically, and 450k done digitally.

Nowhere close enough a split to justify games that are not showing up in the charts today to say that these games are compensating in the digital front, as more than 50% of Tsushima sales are physical.

Drop this narrative that Famitsu is unreliable, that's just embarassing. Sony is a company that wants your money, it doesn't love you as you love it.

Considering the setting, it does feel low. I expected an AAA game set in Japan and released on the PS4 to do more.

Taking nothing away from GoT as a very successful new IP, of course.
In terms of physical sales GoT is 9th best selling PS4 game in Japan. It definitely exceeded expectations
Their games don't sell in japan like that.

If nintendo would have made Gravity rush the exact same I would expect it to sell a million on the Switch.
The Switch has a big userbase but isn't magic. Wouldn't have had such an impact on Gravity Rush.

The last update we got we got was in March 2021 and it was at 440,000 on PS4 Obviously it would have sold more in physical copies since then, plus there was the Director's Cut.

A 50-60 percent digital ratio is roughly what we should expect.

Famitsu numbers showed us that GoT was thr most successful Sony game on PS4, so they definitely aren't irrelevant.
Thats strange. Its not cartoony and doesnt have underage looking characters. Why is it popular there?
Its a fun, quality game that was well marketed and set in Japan, pretty simple.

Hey mate can't you post the link to that last update? Does it show the other Sony titles? I don't doubt it's their most successful in that region but would like to see how the others compared at the time

Why wouldn’t ghost not sell in Japan? I’m American and like the historic Japanese games.

Need a comparison versus the other Sony games

Games published by Sony in Japan, PS4:
  1. Black Ops 4: 511,722 copies
  2. Minecraft: 504,559 copies
  3. Ghost of Tsuima: 457,094 copies
  4. Black Ops III: 403,054 copies
  5. Knack: 400,888 copies

PS5:
  1. Gran Turismo 7: 304,020 copies
  2. Horizon: Forbidden West: 151,755 copies
  3. Marvel Miles Morales: 66,238 copies
  4. Demon Souls: 58,661 copies
  5. God of War: Ragrok: 53,816 copies

I'm assuming the PS5 release plus digital helped Ghost reach 1M. It's definitely Sony's most successful game they have published since GT5.

Sorry, just saw your ridiculous commentary above.

Where are you getting 1K a week off the charts? Why would a game have such strong legs but would NEVER chart? Not even during boosts of people buying hardware. What's more stunning is that this 1K years later is going to be physical like there are just tens of thousands of copies of ghost of tsushima lining storefronts for years...

This guy has his whole world shattered by the fact that famitsu doesn't capture digital and unlike the Switch, Japanese consumers are probably buying more games in digital.

It just doesn't jive with your narrative that the PlayStation is dead in Japan.

You have to make a STRONG and absurd assumption about Ghost selling 1K copies a week for three years without EVER charting in order to even get to half your market sales.

Its huge sales considering japan market in 90% portable and big Nintendo simps

The average Japanese player when a game isn't by Nintendo or a mobile game about gambling for "rare 5 stars" underage waifus:

So yeah this is pretty good for Tsushima

Across PS4 and PS5 GoT was at 593,102 physical at the end of 2022. So rather than being absurd or ridiculous, he actually underestimated its physical sales (didn't take the PS5 version into account).

Keep in mind he didn't take into account the PS5 version rather the came up with a ridiculous statement that the game sold 1K copies a week with physical sales instead... So yes, his thought process is absurd.

Also that's not the total I'm getting from your source.

I don't think Famitsu is unreliable, but they don't seem to provide updated numbers once a game falls of the charts? Essentially they don't publish the sales numbers further down the line.

Point being, without Jim Ryan revealing, many would have thought the game sold sub 500k in Japan. Really Famitsu themselves should have provided updated numbers at certain milestones. Lets say every additional 100k so we have a better of how much a game sold.
