Can people please understand that Switch 2 WON'T be more powerful than Steam Deck?!

I'm in the Switch thread and Gaffers seem to be convinced that somehow the Switch 2 will be more powerful than a Steam Deck! Some people are saying it'll be like a PS5 in power!

THE HELL IS ACTUALLY GOING ON AT GAF!

Why don't people REMEMBER that Nintendo do not chase the graphics race? Why was it only one person in that thread who literally spoke some sense about this?

Nintendo tried to do that game with the GC. It failed. Done. They no longer do it. Gaf needs to remember this and STOP DRINKING THE NINTENDO COOL AID WTFFF!

Look just LOOK at the history of Nintendo! IT'S EASY TO SEE!

We will get something MAYBE at a little under PS4 level MAYBE.

CAN GAF PLEASE SEE SENSE!

THANK YOU!

None of you nor your uncles work at Nintendo. So they know the same as you know: nothing.

It being more powerful than Steam Deck is plausable depending on time of release.

As powerful as PS5/XSX though? On a portable form factor? That's gotta be a no from me dawg.

Even if that was possible, at what cost? Realistically, Nintendo consoles tend to sell at a lower cost than competition. As much as I would love Nintendo to be back in the power race, I think that ship has sailed ever since the Wii and Switch got successful without ever being at the forefront of graphics.

We don't know if it's a semi-portable device like the Switch built from ageing off the shelf stuff, for all we know they might have contracted AMD to develop a custom SoC for a new bleeding edge console. Back in the power game! Just like in the SNES, N64 and GC days.

It's possible.

Of course it won't, it'll have specs that are years away from even being close to state-of-art like the current Switch.

Who is saying this exactly?

I find it highly doubtful there’s a large contingent of people believing it’ll be a portable PS5. Around a Steam Deck’s power seems very likely. Also you said in the other thread the Switch is PS3-level which is also false, so maybe turn the caps lock off.

No I said the Switch 2 would be. I said the 360 is more like the OG Switch at a major push.

The first Switch released 4 years after the PS4 and was more powerful than both the XBOX360 and PS3.
As I expect the Switch 2 to release around 2024, that is 4 years after the PS5, it should/could be more powerful than the PS4.

Since it's Nvidia and DLSS will probably be part of the package, that could lead to some interesting results in real life conditions.

The bear of bad news
It's definitely going to have a more modern chip set. Some form of Nvidia's DLSS tech. It probably won't have the same brute force though.

That's what I expect anyhow. Not that it really matters much anyway, most of the games on it will be first party or indie just like this gen.

Checked that thread and no one was saying Switch 2 would be equivilient to the PS5

If the switch launches in 2024 and doesn't at least match the deck then that's an embarrassment. It's not a matter of chasing graphics. It's a matter of the games not looking and running like wrinkly ass.

I was wondering where you ran off to darkangel(man I really wanted a movie to tie things up for that show).
What's most important is that Steam Deck 2 can run Switch 2 games. - better than the Switch 2..
Maybe if you buy the $649 version of the steam deck 2.
The first Switch released 4 years after the PS4 and was more powerful than both the XBOX360 and PS3.

Yeah, after mulling it over it is could/should be more powerful than the ps4. It will have been nearly 11 years since the ps4 came out if were going with the switch 2 coming out in 2024 so creating a switch 2 with that power or stronger should be possible.
I expect it to be more powerful than steam deck.
Depends on the steam deck. Maybe the weakest version, that is a $399 and runs from a teraflop up to 1.6 teraflops.

It won't matter even if it's more powerful. It will be short lived. Valve has the advantage in that they can upgrade their hardware more frequently because it's essentially a small pc. It does little to affect other steam deck owners unlike Switch that needs fixed hardware and custom versions of everything They could literally launch a 2x more powerful steam deck immediately after confirming the Switch 2 specs that will last for years, then upgrade it again halfway through the Switch 2s lifespan. Lol. No way in well Valve allows Switch 2 to be on the market as a more powerful handheld.

I think this time Nintendo has some incentive for more powerful hardware, if they get into the Steam Deck ballpark it would guarantee them pretty much every third-party port as those games will be released for the Series S as well for the entire gen.

The ideal Switch 2 would have just enough power to get decent ports of third-party games even if it it has to use reconstruction to get to 1080p. The technology is there for them to provide a good experience (DLSS, FSR, VRR, etc) with a decent power consumption and good price point.

I don't think this is the time for Nintendo to go crazy with hardware but you never know. The Steam Deck isn't like a crazy target or anything for a portable coming out maybe 2 years from now.

I'm pretty sure steam will always have a more powerful portable console since they have multiple price power and price ranges for the steam deck.

do not tempt fate do not contrain Wonder Woman's thighs do not do not
Nvidia Tegra Orin is a 4TFLOP chip.
Adapting it to be for "gaming" could lead to some higher performance.
But I really wouldnt expect too much over that realistically.

It is Ampere based though so DLSS/DLDSR are all on the table.

Its not like the PS4Pro has shit graphics so.......
Sign me the fuck up.
In 2024.

EDIT:
Shit I just realized I must fall into the delusional camp who thinks the Switch 2 will be above 2TFLOPs?
Damn.

Why wouldn't they understand it?
Nintendo consoles are easy to follow math.
Take the last gen console, subtract 3 years = Nintendo new console tech!

DenchDeckard

Moderated wildly
It will be as powerful or slightly more powerful than a steam deck but will use DLSS and it will be awesome to see Nintendo games harnessing that kind of power.

If we are lucky it may be close to series s in performance but using some trickery to get there, dlss etc.
