HDTVTEST: Sorry, but Horizon Forbidden West's Gorgeous Visuals are TAINTED by Distracting Picture Quality Bugs

PSA:

I wasn't experiencing this issue before and I just booted up the game, noticed something was off visually and I was suddenly experiencing the problem outlined in the OP.

First thing I did was check my TV settings and I realised I wasn't in game mode that I have the PS5 input to automatically switch to, it was in the TV's default "HDR AI" mode. I then switched it over to game mode and the problem disappeared. Video (hopefully it shows up correctly in this):

So to people experiencing this problem - check and double check your TV settings. Turn off everything and anything related to image processing then try again.

The HDR AI setting on my TV (Philips 65OLED805) has a ton of image processing, for example it has some AI stuff that detects various scene types and objects and then adjusts the brightness and tone mapping on the fly. That all works incredibly for movies/tv/sports but obviously for games where things are a lot more fast paced it can't keep up. I don't know why the combination of that TV setting along with this game is causing such bad issues like this (that mode on my TV has caused some weird visual issues if its on while gaming but nothing on this scale) but there is definitely a link between the TV settings and the HDR bug that people are experiencing.

for some reason and i have no clue why, my TV changed from GAME to Cinema on my C9 with this game playing. i set it back to game with in the first hour of playing and i havent had any of the issues

I'm not sure if this applies to me but I have a really great PC gaming monitor 37 inch which I typically play on. I decided to switch over to my 60 inch hdtv and within a few minutes of playing the experience was so jarring and there was too much happening on my screen. I'm not sure if it's because I'm older and my eyes are bad or I'm just not used to the difference in resolution but I literally could not focus on my character during a big battle scene so much so that I shut off the PS4 and went back to my 37 inch monitor.

One would think Vincent has a properly set TV though so there are some problems still (he tends to turn off any such processing).

I already had the chance to play the game (at last) and setting sharpness to 0 (or anywhere between 0 and 5 in fact) seems to have worked for me, no more of that annoying color shift when moving the camera. I'm playing on a Samsung Qled, sharpness was set to 10 and the issue was quite distracting. But to be honest this is not the first time I see such an issue (some games like God Of War do something similar when panning the camera if motion blur is on) and I saw no one complaining about it. 🤷‍♂️

Anyway the image quality of the game isn't great in Performance Mode. I can't even imagina what the problem might be but other games with the exact same resolution and reconstruction technique (Infamous SS, Ghost of Tsushima, GT Sports...) look sharp and great overall. And even in resolution mode, does anyone really think that the game looks on par with the first Horizon IQ wise? Because I don't, Forbidden West is noisier, with more visual artifacts, and bearing in mind that this game is native 4K and the first one is 4K CB (that is, half of native 4K) that's very weird. 2X the number of pixels and worse IQ? I didnt even think that was possible.

still for me focusing so much on graphic makes no sense

I SWEAR TO GOD ON MY LIFE

There is something wrong with the 30fps on my tv.

I dont know what it is. I have the xbr900h.

I can not play horizon at 30fps on it on my PS5. It has this stutter or something to it. Everyone is saying "30fps is fine in horizon. Youre just blind"

Its legit pissing me off, because on PS4 and my old tv, I used to play 30fps just fine. And I want to play at 30fps because horizon just looks so much better, but I cant. And I fucked around with my settings, but it always has this stutter that I just cant get rid of.......

/crying

IKR! Is it something like whenever you move the camera, your eyes just can't focus? Its a weird blur or something. As if it's fucking up my vision. It's fine when I am not moving the camera.
Playing on a c9 oled.

But this advice in the ot helped me a little bit-

Set motion blur and camera shake to zero. Then turn off the 'HDMI ultra deep color' setting on your TV (not sure what it's called in Sony tvs) and restart the TV. Then enable it and restart again. Finally, restart the PS5.

This helped me somewhat, though mainly waiting for the next patch as guerilla says they are aware of the issue and working on it.

Yeh you'd think so but I don't understand why the fuck my TV decided to switch itself out of game mode and in to it's default HDR mode when booting up this game. Definitely something odd going on.

You feel like your TV is being weird with Horizon 2? Well how about this for weird;

I boot up the game after watching VTs video to see if I get the colour desaturation thing and I did but its way way more subtle than in the video so I think I just didn't notice it before. I tend to figure things like that are caused by motion blur, CBR, etc ie temporal stuff and so I've grown used to change of brightness or colour on camera movement, it doesn't bother me unless it's really different from the static image.

The weird part was the image was insanely sharp and noisy and I thought it was something they did in the patch 1.5 but it was really over the top so I went and checked the Clarity section in my TV settings. Every thing was at my usual settings: 50/neutral sharpening, reality creation to Off (but even if you went to manual it was set to 0), but as I toggled through settings the extreme sharpness was gone and when I went back to Off it was like back to normal like when I played prior to 1.5 patch.

I've never heard of such a thing as a game/console being able to affect TV picture settings in that way, so I guess it must be a bug in my TV firmware but you saying it did weird things too made me wonder.

I've had issues with it having the wrong colour temperature recently and I have to toggle it to fix it but I thought that was an issue of a failing soundbar video passthrough, perhaps the soundbar (Also Sony) is somehow altering my picture settings via a proprietary Sony thing, fuck knows.

I had hoped the HDR would be better in 2 but its still got some peculiarities and is probably apparently an afterthought in terms of the rendering pipeline. Still looks amazing though so no big worries.

Is it me or the new patch make res mode a bit too soft now? The difference with perf mode is less now.

Not sure if like this, i kinda liked the over sharpened look.

Feel free to sharpen the image with your TV settings.

Native 4K should be sharp enough on a 4K-screen in my opinion without the use of extra sharpening.

I always leave sharpening to zero, anything else is artificial clarity\details.

Before it was a bit oversharpened, but not ugly to me, now is maybe a bit soft.

But it may be an extreme case of placebo on my part (i don't think so)

The default HDR is def not ideal, saw the following HDR settings for using HGIG and gaming on an LG C1 or CX OLED and they do make the game look so much better. Try this:
  • Brightness: - 2
  • Shadows: 0 (default)
  • Highlights: - 8
So much more resolved detail in the clouds.
Anyone got recommended settings for a Sony x90j led TV?

After the update my issue with 4K oled and hdr is less than before. I don’t get big headache now but still some artifacts are distracting

Why buy a PS5 then? The games up till now could all be done on a PS4, more are in fact, just with worse gfx. People put money on the table primarily to have better gfx.

I do wish that Vincent would go back to what he's actually trained to do, as his channel has unfortunately become more popular he's veered more and more from what he does so well in an attempt to chase the ever moving YouTube algorithm. This is something that ruins so many channels when they start having moderate success in terms of income, they very much lose what made them interesting and useful in the first place in the pursuit of maintaining their income. It's certainly not unique to this channel.
I do wish he would go back to talking about what he actually has expertise in, when he concentrated on panels it could be such an interesting/useful channel.
I've not watched it for what must be over a year now since he attempted to move away from his speciality and become more marketable.
His overly rehearsed "dad humour" would have felt dated in the '80s let alone now but that was OK, the fact that he celebrates that flaw was a part of what made him an interesting presenter in the past but only when it was combined the true content of his panel analysis.
The algorithm gets everyone in the end, i can think of a ton of youtubers who used to make fun of click bait, who now actively use those same tactics. Youtube is a sess pool of people “hoping to make it big” and often that drowns out the good stuff.

It's not a case of "hoping to make it big", in the case of Vincent he's already big. It's just that if you don't adhere to the algo gods you can't make any money on the platform. Unfortunately everyone needs to play by the rules, regardless of the size of their channel.

That said, it does grate on me, it comes across as begging.

This guy lol
He said the sharpness was wrong.
Guerrilha listened and tuned it down.

Now the game looks worst than before lll

It looks less sherpened, some people like it, some people don't.

To me it doesn't look quite as sharp as i expect from native 4k, more like native 1800p or fake4k.

A sharpening slider instead of what they did would have been much better.

Absolutely, the people on YouTube are no more than products and when it's time for something new they'll merely be left behind. The majority of the channels either actually become the algorithm which renders them completely impotent or they just get left behind when YouTube loses interest.
It's fantastic that making videos has been democratised but I do feel it's ridiculous how many people genuinely expect to make a living on YouTube, It's the lie that YouTube keeps on selling, "you really are good enough to make a living on here, just let us transform you into the nice tidy package that we can wrap up in advertising".
I use a third party subscription manager, I block advertising and information flowing back to YouTube so they can't even register a view when I watch videos. I don't see comments, view numbers, likes or dislikes, recommendations or links to anything else. I also use SponsorBlock and by the time I watch a video the video has already been filtered so in video advertising has already gone. I just refuse to feed the YouTube ecosystem in any way and supporting somebody who's videos you may like is merely fucking over other people who may be just as good or even better than the person you enjoy watching.

What’s the point of a PS5? And “next-gen”? Visuals are a huge part of VIDEO games, let’s face it. Going to all that trouble on the games graphics and having it tarnished seems ridiculous to me. They will obviously patch something, some people have more patience than others.

more power can be used for different things than pushing more polygons and better textures.
but as i said, if people care that much, they are doing something right.

Any advise please this is sending me bat shit! My LG65C8 has a peak brightness of 820 nits and I'm going by this table chart as a guide. Brightness 9, highlights -8 and shadows at 0. Will this be fairly accurate? 🤔

Only to a certain extent, given what the consoles are built for. Physics can probably be pushed harder on the gpu, AI calculations on the cpu, not much else.

There might be a workaround. Disable motion blur and turn down the camera sensitivity to minimum. It worked for me and made 30 fps playable.

I have a better fix than this. Close the TV and go outside for a breather. Come back next month when the patch is available later.

It's too bad about the drop in iq when this game is in 60fps. That patch a while back helped but only got it about halfway there. Weird for such a technically proficient game. I actually switched back and forth several times in my 40 hours. It's kind of nice just having two profiles to flip back and forth like that. I love all my little sliders on pc but performance/resolution toggles are a neat compromise.

Haven't seen the video, I feel the same about Control... Can't enjoy the game graphics with all the noise artifacts wherever some cool gfx or lighting is supposed to be

Didn't notice it and if I have to use a "real time wave form analysis tool" to see it I guess I'm lucky because I don't have it and don't use it.

On the other hand, I notice a camera stutter when I stop the camera after moving it. Like everything rendered just shifts back into its place slightly after being dislocated. It's weird, like I stop the camera turning but it seems as I move the stick slightly in the opposite direction for a split second (which I don't), but that's how it looks on-screen.

What if The Witcher 4 is 30fps? Or GTA6
Get ready for this - I don't care about either of these games XD

I just can't stand 30fps now that I have had almost consistent 60fps since PS5s launch. Its just not a thing Im willing to accept anymore, I also stopped watching SD content etc. Tech and expectations move on.

Lmfao. A console only player won't play 30 fps games anymore. If you really care about frame rate, PC is the only way to go. But console only players can't really do anything but take what comes in the package. Beggars can't be choosers.
