Mark Cerny reveals the M.2 SSD he bought for his PS5

There are already three or more other threads about PS5 SSD expansion drives. Why not put it in one of those? Since we like to consolidate things here, this would seem a good candidate, the exciting nature of SSD expansion notwithstanding.

This isn't GamePass. This is the PS5 SSD.

I think it's funny that it's the only argument that some people have.

I agree that we should wait for the update to be out before coming to any conclusions but I don't think installing the NVME will be as difficult as some say it is.

But we ain't. Just take a look through the "ssd beta" thread. We should be allowed to make fun of the "it's too hard"-guys in here - when it's obviously not.

But this whole war going on over "it's too hard" is peak retardation. One side is lashing out at another for pointing out the reality that removing the bottom cover and undoing two screws is more complex (not hard) than plugging in a memory card. For just about everyone here that's not too hard (but based on some posts I'm not 100% sure about that). But it's the same as the PS3 and PS4. I wouldn't trust the average PlayStation user to open up their system and replace the HDD (or know how to restore the OS in the case of the PS3 and PS4). The PS2 was really the only one that had a simple HDD upgrade.

Most people here take care of their systems.

Relax, this is just an ironic answer to tom warren

That is easier for the user, yes, it is. But It's supposed to be a one time thing, the removed media for Sony this generation is to be used for backup only, so the PS5 owner still have the option to plug a external drive using the USBs.
Microsoft's solution also have it's problems. The physical size will limit the maximum capacity and there's a tax. Here Sony finally avoided the mistake of insisting on a proprietary format and went with the market standard that will have more competition and lower prices.

You know it's even easier than replacing the HDD from a PS4 right?

Actually some people are calling the PS5s solution difficult because they are lashing out at the options PS5 owners will have.

This time you don't have to reload the OS.

It took me 24 hours to replace my HDD on my 320Gig slim PS3. Took 12 hours to copy the contents of the 320Gig HDD to a 500Gig external. Then another 12 hours to copy it back to the new 2Tb I installed.

Pretty much just plug it in. And thankfully there will be plenty of options on the market. I'm thinking of installing just a 500GB NVME into mine when I get it. Prices should drop considerably by the time that happens.

I’ve been reading a lot of these and I have to say that it’s not one side lashing out at the other for saying one is more complex (not hard) than the other.

Its literally had people claiming that it is too complex/hard/difficult for the average consumer.

I’m not diving back into that debate, however, I’m just pointing out that it isn’t about one being less complex than the other. The XBOX solution is easier. That’s the extent of it. The rest is something I am going to try to avoid.

Sony doesn't set the prices for NMVe SSDs.

Nor do they get a cut from any of these purchases. I'm actually surprised that Sony didn't partner with one of these SSD makers to release an official PS5 SSD. They're just leaving money on the table.

I suggested that was going to happen, people said it was crazy.

I guess those people never upgraded their PS4 HDD.

I don’t understand why people need extra memory on PS5 or Series X. But, i don't understand people who play a ton of games at a time.

I play a game, finish it and immediately remove it, as if I ever replay it, it will likely be months or years later and I'll just re-download it. There's just a few games, such as Rocket Leauge, that I feel the need to have installed all the time.

I tend to buy more than I finish. Bad habit I know.. bad practice overall… but…. I need the storage. Also a game like CoD if you keep all modes keep eating more and more space.

I don't play many games at once either, but my PS5 is for the whole family. Between the four of us we all play different games and storage runs out very quickly.

I guess that's a point. I stopped sharing my consoles. I buy mine and later, if requested, I'll buy one for the kids to share.

Right now, my kids will only play Minecraft, Roblox and Fortnite, so I'm not in a rush to buy them a PS5 or Series X - PS4, Xbox One, Switch and their iPad have them covered.

One thing we can't manage to share is Switch. Between the 5 members of our house, we have 6 Switches. A regular Switch for my media room, one for my 3 boys to share in their game room and 4 Switch Lites - one for each of us, excluding my wife who only watches when we play games together.

Now go all by this overpriced promoted piece of kit, Sony fans 🤣 Cerny will be laughing to the bank ..

Xbox Expansion Card :
-Proprietary format so no choice.
-Too expensive.
-Slow compared to the competition.

PS5 SSD Expansion :
-Standard format with plenty of choice.
-Price is right and will decrease faster with time.
-The fastest SSDs on the market.
-Usable on PC.

Who do you think is getting a good deal?

I’ve gotten used to moving games to my external after finishing them. I have around 300gb free at the moment. I’ll probably hold off until these drop in price or go on sale.

Taking a lid off a PS5 and undoing a couple screws is easier than assembling ikea furniture which average consumers seem to have no problem with.

The reality is that all this concern for the "average consumer" that installing an expansion SSD is too difficult is just team green being salty that PS5 has a clearly superior SSD expansion solution.

Took another look at it and it seems WD cant do proper exchange rates to CDN$. 1TB with heatsink should be $319 CDN and they list it for $365.

....nope

Is tax already included in the $365? In the US, the tax is calculated at checkout because each state has a different tax rate. So if the drive is $250 USD, we're paying $250 USD + whatever the state tax is.

I agree with them that the XSXs solution is easier and hot swappable but that's about the only advantage that it has. Everything else goes to the PS5s NVME expansion option.

I mentioned it earlier but im taking the option of installing a 500GB drive when I get my PS5. A huge cheap external is what I will use for storing games that I don't play often. Saves the hassle of having to wait for downloads or going through lengthy installs.

Probably not as its just the price shown when you switch different versions.

Or you could always install any other drive thats not licenced by Sony. Still isn't the same thing as a proprietary format like those Vita memory cards.
I wonder why Sony doing you a favour of giving your certified easy plug and play solution instead of the impossible to decipher mess of SD cards and the tons of vendors that had their alternative. The risk of buying the wrong card… nope in that case it was horrible and a reason to wish the system to fail for… 🤔.

Thankfully, due to PlayStation 5 being my secondary exclusives only console, I will never need any more storage space than what's already inside the console and even if it was my primary like Xbox Series X, I still wouldn't need any additional storage space. It's awesome not having a backlog and going from game to game and uninstalling them when they're 100% finished as that means I won't have this issue for either console for the entire duration of the generation.
