PlayStation welcomes Housemarque to the family

Naah, they've mainly done PS games and the deal between Housemarque and Sony was initially made in 2020. Sony doesn't shock the industry with it's purchases - it's really up to each studio to perform, to get acquired. The only way to shock the industry, is to buy multiplatform IP-holders - make them exclusive and call it innovative.
That was what I was wanting with the whole shock the industry move. Buying a multiplatform ip holding studio would be nice but they wouldn't even have to do that much to shock me. Just hire a director to make a first party studio to make similar games of the company he was from. You get more games and more studios so no one should really complain since you won't be making a multiplatform ip exclusive.

Xbox fans can relax anyway. Nothing is being taken away from their line up here.

It’s an ethical acquisition. Unlike some other acquisitions.
I think these are necessary defensive moves to secure their already established partners.

Tencent, Amazon, and MS are going on a acquisition offensive to 'build'/purchase content for their services. Sony are doing it to not lose/drop quality in their already established ones.

Oh nooo more consolidation ! /s
Oh please this shit wouldn't be happening if other companies didn't go crazy on buying sprees but yes consolidation is bad.

I'm not a fan of roguelikes. I do like the setting and lore of Returnal. I'd like to see a sequel that follows the arcade gameplay of Returnal but has a more expansive map using the metroidvania gameplay loop. For then roguelike and high score fans they can have arenas or randomised areas within the games map or seperate mode.

So I hope we get a metroidvania Returnal game sequel.

This is another acquisition that makes sense. Housemarque's most successful games, like Insomniac before them, have been PS exclusives. If that means being given the opportunity to work on other games such as Returnal, then I'm all for it.

But Sony has been buying studios since forever. Who’s fault was it those times? All ears.

Congratulations, HouseMarque. Love their games. Hopefully, now they will have the financial stability to make even better and bigger games.

P.S. Hermen takes a lot of shit, even from PlayStation fans, but my boy started this acquisition conversation with HouseMarque within 6 months of him getting his job. Something that Shawn and Yoshida apparently never did. The acquisition was delayed by Returnal's development and COVID. Throw some love to Hermen Hulst while you are celebrating this new addition to the PlayStation Studios family.

I don’t think MS would be interested in a studio like Housemarque as it doesn’t come with any valuable IP. I believe MS is on a content purchase mission to fill gamepass, not so much a raw talent push.

Sony wants talent to foster their internal IP building prowess. Different approaches.

Nope, they've released several games on the Xbox platform.

But it's no loss if you're a multiplatform gamer.
The last time Housemarque released a game (Angry Birds) on Xbox was in 2011, that was funded by Activision. Same in 2011 with Outland, funded by Ubisoft. They haven't released their own game on an Xbox console before.

Next bluepoint.
Id love to see Kojima join.
Hopefully more big studios with established IP’s don’t get bought out by MS, Playstation or Nintendo.

If more get bought out by MS, then I hope Playstation buys Sega lol

When they were entering the matket with the PS sure. It was "their" fault. Today though there are hostile acquisitions from the new services push for Google, Amazon, MS, Tencent, and as we see here Sony are buying their close partner companies to prevent somebody else grabbing them. That's what consolidation is. It's like an arms race.

Looks like PS Japan leaked Bluepoint joining too:

Its not a leak when its straight from the company.

i kind of hope all this buying slows down. eventually we're going to be left with Microsoft/sony/ubisoft/EA/2k/activisionblizz and that's it as far as AAA devs.

Sony buys studios they've worked with for a long time. Key there is "Sony buys studios", they don't buy publishers or big IPs. These studios Sony buys, well guess what, Sony already owned the IPs they worked on.

You must be doing trials for the mental olympics, these false equivalences are very telling.

I'm not sure about that, some of their previous purchases didn't really own well established IPs at the time of purchase.

Obsidian Games, Compulsion Games,
I would even say Ninja Theory didn't have an IP that was that well established.

A hostile acquisition is when the company is bought against their wishes. That has not happened in a long time, if ever.

Because Sony wouldn’t have bought Bethesda if they could 😂. Man you guys are something else.

Don’t blame MS because all they could afford was to money hat Todd for Starfield timed exclusivity.

Buying big studios requires big investments, something Sony doesn’t have the capacity to do like MS.

Nice, I like Housemarque and it's great they have stability now. Good devs. I don't think Returnal quite hit the spot but it was solid and by no means bad/mediocre. It will be good to see what they can produce next working alongside the other first parties which seems to really help a studio up their quality.

MS is spending more money on console warring than anyone and still in third place. Sony is being smart with its purchases.

So it's not just the false equivalencies, you really are a smooth brain. I'll get out of your way, post that drivel at will my boy, don't let anybody ever stop you.
