Horizon: Forbidden West | Gameplay Reveal Trailer

Just watched it on my OLED. It's a great looking cross-gen game. Especially beautiful underwater, fits the art style perfectly. Gameplay also looked dope, not sure how much of that elephant fight was scripted though.
I don’t see how this won’t win GOTY if it releases this year lol
Just like last time, it will probably get cockblocked by Zelda.

Genuinely surprised at the reaction to the graphics on here. It looks good but it still looks like a crossgen title. Demon's Souls looked better than this imo and had a higher frame rate. The general art style of the game is what's making everyone excited I guess. The overly accentuated god rays and saturated colors really pop compared to Demon's Souls. Gonna be crazy what they'll be able to do on a fully next gen title.
I can see the technical prowess of Demon Souls and the flaws in HFW but think this looks better. It’s just the kind of aesthetic I prefer overall.

Personally I was pleasantly surprised as I had no expectation from it. GG are pretty good in gfx though so I am not sure why some guys are disappointed :pie_confused: If this is not good enough then in coming months I think there is going to be more disappointed.

I think this bodes well for the future as well because this game was being in development for some 3yrs at least. So may be some years from now we can expect this sort of gfx to be the norm ?

And Demon Souls. Probably more impressive games than the first year of last Generation

Agreed. tbh, the start of this gen as just as many as last gens start lol

Killzone SF, Knack, Drive Club is pretty much just like having a Demon Souls, Ratchet, Returnal and Horizon, but I feel this one is better by last gen. I don't care for Killzone like I used to so I'd like Demon Souls better and Ratchet as an IP murders Knack and no waaaaay is something like InFamous Second Son touching a Horizon title.

So I feel they are similar, but this start is better. People just got them rose tinted glasses on lol

Z Zghia lol, well it is an RPG. I think some limit or over drive or special system fits this IP a lot.

This is due to the limitations of a deferred renderer. Most games attach a light source to the character that is totally separate from the scene. In short, we need to get away from deferred rendering and embrace full on forward rendering.

Oh no, It doesn't matter how advanced rendering tech gets we are gonna have unrealistically placed hero lights, until the end of time even in realistic games, indoor and outdoor. Since it looks pretty.

totally possible but I’d be shocked if botw2 makes it this year

Yes? Not even live action movies light based on the direction of the sun. CGI is filled with 3 point lighting aka rim lighting.
Yes that is true - in indoor areas.

Outdoor sunlight has a much larger luminous value and will dwarf local light rigs so they are normally turned off. You can get rim lighting on skin/fur from just a directional light source in film because those materials actually implement the full BDRF equations for hair/skin - games do not - accept in cinematics (where you see Aloy's hair being lit correctly along with all other objects in the scene). However, even in cinematics, you lose directionality of the light source when objects are in shadow because of the GI light probes.

Here is a video of HZD showing that the lighting matches the scene lighting. Some of her hair strands have a glossy color to them to at least give the hair shape while in shadow (= constant color), her armor is reflecting an environment cube (also constant color) but her skin falls victim to the GI light probes. AO tries to save it a little bit but not nearly enough.

It might have been a decision to do this so that you can see more contrast in her hair with the specular highlight (which isn't computed in GI light probe computation) and upper body where you avoid your entire BRDF from being crushed to constant ambient term * texture color. As I said, it'll probably be changed in the final release so no need to argue over it.

Do we know that HFW will make it this year? I'm team 2022 and I feel kinda vindicated since we still don't have a release date.
I feel like Sony is gonna be cautious after so many delays for other games to announce things.

Doesn’t mean it’ll be 2022 I would t read too much into the lack of an announcement at this point. August is when I’d start wondering really.

I am team 2021

I think the reason they haven’t had a release date is simply because it’s a little too soon to announce it.

For projects like this you have a pretty rigorous set of milestones but things happen. They don’t want a CDPR fiasco on their hands.

so we will probably get a date here in a few months if it’s ready for this year. By September

I'd also like to know this.

Does anyone know if Guerilla said anything?

I also believe this.

I also believe this.

they have another 6 months of development to ship by December

what they showed looked pretty polished already, which is why I think it’s probably still coming out this year.

I think the goal is October but they don’t want the embarrassment of a last minute delay, so that gives them a little wiggle room to just announce the date closer to launch when they ate confident they can meet that target

The only thing I don't like is climbling is still tied to specific points, it's not free, but at least the gameplay seems more vertical this time.

Looks ok. About what I would expect in first year. I will get it as it won't release on pc for a year?
I don't like bow targeting small robot parts like in the first one but it's the game

I think it's either a November release or an early 2022 release.

If I had to pick one, I will go with the early 2022 release. Hopefully, Sony has a summer showcase soon but I don't think they will, either way, they need a big game for the fall. So unless the big game for the fall will be TLOU Collection, it has to be Horizon. But IDK they may just not release anything in the fall, who knows. I think it is up in here.

The weak points are great imo! Otherwise they would be bullet/arrow sponges. No traps shown though. I hope they haven’t removed those, best things about the original.

Looks really impressive sans the 30fps.

The first one was nearly there for me. I couldn’t believe the graphics even on base PS4 and the combat was really cool but I found myself bored long before the end so never finished it. If they can make use of the open world and actually put stuff worth doing in it I’ll probably be there day one.

Agreed. I also wonder if this is Jim Ryan Sony manifesting itself again. Keep things mysterious, steal any Xbox thunder when the time is right.

I still think that Sony is worried about trying to counter Halo.

The game looks stunning imo, especially the parts that were under the water. I love how colorful it is!

It seemed very linear in the footage they showed though. Not that I mind, I usually prefer linear games with some semi-open areas. The BotW-style glider was also a nice surprise. I hope you can jump of off high places and just glide down into the jungle etc. That'd be awesome.

Looks like a solid sequel.

Vegetation, apart from the ones to hide, not properly reacting (again) to player is the most disappointing for me. I continue not understanding how Zelda BOTW on Switch has better physics than Horizon 2 in PS5.

So much more stuff to process at this level of detail.

Teardown has better destruction physics than any AAA shooter. Meanwhile that new RTX demo that just has a marble rolling around doesn't even run properly on a 3090.

Looks like Horizon, all right. The combat still looks boring but the graphics are pretty good for a cross'gen.

I think the first one is a borefest, hope this one is different.

Posted this in the State of Play thread but posting it here as well. Gameplay looks good but still needs lot of improvement:

* Many places Aloy and environment don't mix organically. Feels as if Aloy is separate from the environment and is not fitting well with the objects around.
* Way too colorful in some scenes. Felt like Immortal Fenyx Rising in some places.
* Melee combat still feels bad and clunky.
* Hitboxes are horrible. In the mammoth fight Aloy just went through several objects without showing any impact or knock back.
* Taking control of machines still feels like simple. The device connect and hacking system should feel more attached rather than how it is now. The animation needs to show proper physical contact and wires/tentacles plugging in the machine system to hack.
* Still the climbing system seems based on contact points rather than free climb like in BotW and Genshin Impact. Grapple hook system should give some freedom but need to see more of it. Glider seems nice.
* Bow as main weapon was a given but they should put some other better melee weapon along with the spear. We should be able to craft different weapons (melee/ranged) from machine parts rather than just use them temporarily during fights.

Absolutely spectacular looking game.

I honestly think this looks better than Ratchet, so how in the name of fuck they're running this on PS4 is beyond me. I'm seriously starting to wonder if they've just built two separate worlds lol.

I know this is a much bigger team, but honestly it shits all over Demon's Souls and Returnal. I feel vindicated for never being that impressed with DS now: THIS is the sort of crazy stuff I was expecting from next gen, and now I just can't wait to see more.

I have no idea why Sony chooses to showcase that terrible 1080p YouTube compressed video. It destroys the experience.
Are you watching on your phone? If you are, make sure to use the YouTube app. The quality is much better through the app than through your browser.

I don't understand people who keep saying combat is boring in HZD. You get variety of machines that can be taken down in different ways. Every game lets you shoot something or has meele button that you smash and parry attacks. It's like saying Call of Duty is boring because you only shoot people or Dark Souls is boring because you have to parry and smash meele button to progress. Every game has some game loop that is hidden behind story and art direction. HZD has great story and art direction and it's gameplay was quite refreshing for its time. If it wasn't Sony exclusive, maybe some so called critics would have had different opinion.

After Last of Us 2, have understood one thing, if there are some people moaning about something frivolous and not true stuff, then probably that game is great and worth trying.

This does indeed look pretty flippin' spectacular. You have to wonder how Nice Guy Phil feels knowing he's going to have to make one of those cringe-worthy "Sony's got a great product" comments to the press, so it doesn't look like he's butthurt over not having anything this visually spectacular on Series X.

More than willing to walk all this back if MS's first party delivers the goods in 2023 and beyond, but I don't see how they hold a candle (at least visually) to 1st party Sony titles.
What kind of reaction to a gameplay reveal is this? You immediately bring up Phil Spencer and the visual quality of games on Series X (ones you haven't seen yet 🙄). Is this because you weren't as impressed as you're making out? If bringing up the competition is your first thought that's a little worrying don't you think?
